Beynd the Terractta Army
ON MY FIRST TRIP t Xi’an in 2002, I came t see what everyne cmes here t see: the Terractta Army. But like many grup turs t China, the trip had an itinerary (行程) that was perfunctry — a checklist f must-sees that frequently left me wndering whether there was mre t see. With this gal, I flew t China again in Nvember.
The weather was mild when I arrived, ideal fr surveying Xi’an frm the beautifully restred City Wall. I rented a bike and spent mre than an hur cvering the nearly flat nine-mile circle, eye-t-eye with rftps n ne side and mdern twers n the ther.
I spent the late afternn riding the city’s mdern subway t ther sites: the Bell Twer and the Drum Twer. A blck away, the Drum Twer is a kind f gateway t the Muslim Quarter. The next mrning, a lcal driver picked me up and tk me t Hua Shan, abut 120 kilmeters east f Xi’an. By the time we reached a cable car statin fr the ride t the tp, the rcky walls surrunding the building were displaying a dusting f snw, Hua Shan’s first f the seasn.
I learned abut the Plank Walk n my previus visit. Turists climbed alng the cliffs, tightly hlding nt heavy metal chains that lined the riskier sectins.
I didn’t have time n my previus trip. On this visit, the lng West Peak cable car rute rse int mrning cluds, dwn int a valley and back up, eventually arriving at a statin cvered in snw and ice. Lacking glves, the hat r the scarf, I made my way int a frzen wnderland.
I cvered a gd bit f Hua Shan’s trails this time, ascending three f the five peaks. But when I arrived at the Plank Walk, it was clsed fr the day. Still, the lng day here was rewarding, with smiling faces sptted everywhere f peple happy t be explring China’s magnificent scenery n a mre micr level.
