It was a wnderful and sunny day. I, alng with my family, stayed in a beautiful, huge beach huse, staring ut at the cean. But rather than enjying myself, I felt like I had hit a buttn.
I mved my eyes t the grund directly belw where I std, where there was a shrt blacktp driveway and a few garbage cans. Mike walked here, and I asked him, "What d yu think wuld happen if I jumped right nw?" He lked dwn. "I think yu'd be kay," he said. "Yu'd prbably just break yur legs. If yu aimed fr the trash cans, they might break yur fall." Brken legs sunded pretty gd t me, right then. It wuld mean I wuldn't be able t d much—including wrk—fr a few days.
Clearly, I had made a mistake in switching jbs within my cmpany a few mnths earlier, and nw I had t get myself ut f the mess I'd created. I made it knwn that I wasn't happy, that it wasn't wrking ut, and that I needed t get back t my ld grup ding what I knw and lve and d best, which is editing and writing.
But all rutes were blcked, and my health was suffering, s my nly chice was t leave. After I decide that, the stne in my heart was getting lighter.
The next day, June 6, smething unexpected happened. Seemingly ut f the blue, I gt an email that said I had a green light t mve back t my ld grup. Just like that.
I didn't have t quit. I didn't have t d anything but hug my gd frtune and feel grateful that things had basically wrked ut in my favr. Nw that my mind is free f the stress and anxiety I'd been dealing with fr the last few mnths, I think I'll be writing here mre.

Abut half a billin peple depend n the ecsystems created and sustained by crals. And with climate change threatening cral's survival, marine scientist Enric Sala had a gal that might have seemed impssible.
"We wanted t get int a time machine, g back hundreds f years and actually see a cral reef like they used t be everywhere, befre we started expliting them and plluting them and killing them all ver the wrld," Sala said.
The gal was made pssible during an expeditin Sala led in 2009. The team traveled t a crner f the Suth Pacific Ocean, t see if the vibrant reefs there held any clues that culd help them understand hw t bring damaged reefs in ther parts f the cean back t health.
"The bttm was cvered by thriving(茂盛的) cral. Vivid clrs surrunded me—purples, reds, ranges, yellws and greens. It was s beautiful," Sala said.
His team presented their findings t fficials in the island cuntry f Kiribati. The gvernment tk steps t prtect the waters frm fishing and ther human activity. But between 2015 and 2016, recrd levels f cean warming damaged half the cral reefs the team had been studying.
After hearing that news, they lst hpe fr the health f cral reefs. Last year, they went in fr anther dive. Despite the reprted cnditins, the reef had smehw restred itself, filled with life and clr nce mre. Sala and his team were verjyed. This is smething that Sala says can be wed t tw key factrs.
The first is, thankfully, half f the crals didn't die. Despite the rise in temperatures, there were enugh surviving crals left behind t help reprduce the reefs. The secnd was the Kiribati gvernment's decisin t fully prtect thse waters.
