He wuld find perfectly gd wd, r a windw still wrapped in plastic frm the factry. “Yu can’t wrap yur mind arund hw wasteful America is until yu run a waste cmpany,” he says
There is a slid envirnmental case fr repurpsing, r upcycling. “When peple call, I say we dn’t chip, grind, melt.” “Carsn ntes. Recycling, hwever nble, still takes energy. “Why melt smething dwn, if it still has value?” he asks. An ld il-field pipe might be melted dwn and turned int a car bumper, but it still takes a fair amunt f pwer t finish the transfrmatin. Why nt put it straight up and turn it int a fence pst n a farm? The nly cst is transprt.
Carsn recently pened tw new warehuses (仓库), bringing the ttal t six. “Crpratins(企业) are,” he says, “becming increasingly fcused n sustainability, s we’re upping (使升级) ur capabilities.” Yu never knw when the next 20,000-kilgram spl f 10-centimeter-thick rpe might cme alng, r where it might g.

Frm the rar f a crwd t the quiet f a library, sund and silence might seem like plar ppsites. Hwever, accrding t a new research, ur brains perceive them in the same way. Silence may nt be a sund, but scientists say we can truly hear it.
In this new study, researchers examined hw peple experience silence using well-knwn auditry illusins (错觉). The illusins are meant t test the perceptin f nise, but fr the study, the team adapted them t measure peple’s respnse t silence, instead.
“If yu can get the same illusins with silences as yu get with sunds, then that may be bvius that we literally hear silence after all.” Chaz Firestne, a c-authr f the study and cgnitive scientist at Jhns Hpkins University, says in a statement.
In the study, participants were tricked by these “silence illusins” in a similar way t hw peple are typically fled by the sund versins f the experiments.
The researchers prepared seven experiments and tested them n 1,000 study participants. In ne experiment, researchers played a recrding that sunded like backgrund nise in a crwded place. In the first half f the recrding, the backgrund nise was interrupted by tw separate perids f silence. In the secnd half, ne cntinuus perid f silence was inserted (嵌入). Researchers asked participants which silence felt lnger- the cmbinatin f the first tw perids f silence, r the secnd uninterrupted ne. Mst participants thught the cntinuus silence was lnger, but it was actually the same length as the tw shrter silences cmbined.
These results were cnsistent with previus research that examined auditry illusins, which used tw separate sunds and ne cntinuus sund. With that illusin, peple als perceived the cntinuus sund as lnger than the tw separate nes tgether.
Similar findings acrss the seven experiments suggested that humans experience silence and sund in much the same way: They can distrt (扭曲) ur perceptin f time.
    28. Why did researchers use auditry illusins in the new study?
    A. T help peple perceive sunds.
    B. T test peple’s adaptability t nise.
    C. T measure hw peple respnd t silence.
    D. T remind peple t be quiet in the library.
    29. What can we infer frm paragraph 5?
    A. Illusins f silence fl peple’s brains.
    B. The three perids f silence are f the same length.
    C. Sund is usually difficult fr peple t perceive.
    D. Participants chse a recrding and played it.
    30. Where is this text mst likely frm?
    A. A diary. B. A jurnal. C. A nvel. D. A guidebk.
    31. What is the best title fr the text?
    A. We can truly hear silence like a sund.
    B. Sund and silence are actually the same.
    C. Auditry illusins affect ur perceptin ability.
    D. Our brain has the ability t perceive sund and silence.

The backfire effect is a very strng, psychlgical aspect in all f ur minds. Due t this effect, whenever yu are faced with infrmatin and facts that cntradict smething yu believe, instead f changing yur view r frming a new pinin, yur riginal beliefs will ften be strengthened. Yn will believe in yur previusly frmed pinin even mre vigrusly (坚定地), despite seeing hard prf.
Fr example, remember that classmate yu frmed an pinin abut t fast? And even thugh everything they did suggested therwise, yu didn’t want t believe yu were wrng abut them, s yu cnvinced yurself that yu weren’t wrng.
Yu fund reasns, dwelt n minr things, and ignred the facts that cntradicted yur pinin. With all f this struggle, yu believed that yur pinin didn’t have t change. The huge amunt f thught yu gave it nly strengthened yur riginal pinin abut yur classmate.

The Internet revlutin has prvided the ability t argue with peple acrss the glbe, even if yu’ve never met them. Heated arguments yu might have witnessed (r participated in) n the Internet between tw peple ging back and frth abut a very emtinal issue will usually end in very raised tempers and n cnclusins. This is because each side is really just strengthening the ther side’s riginal pinin.
In my pinin, it is critically imprtant t be aware f the backfire effect, because f hw much it helps us grw. We can change and learn much faster if we allw ur ideas f the wrld t be flexible, and nt be s certain that ur beliefs are superir.
    32. What will peple mst prbably d under the influence f the backfire effect?
    A. Accept cntradictry infrmatinB. Cme up with new ideas
    C. Stick t previus beliefsD. Ntice slid evidence
    33. Hw can peple deal with arguments better when nticing the backfire effect?
    A. By inspiring thers t dubt their wn belief.
    B. By bravely prviding the fact ppsed by thers.
    C. By remving the influence f the backfire effect.
    D. By becming aware f the lgic f the arguments.
    34. Why d heated arguments n the Internet tend t end in vain?
    A. They are nt discussed by peple face t face.
    B. They are strengthening the ppnents’ initial pinin.
    C. They are t debatable fr peple t draw cnclusins.
    D. They are nly between tw peple.
    35. What des the authr suggest readers d with the backfire effect?
    A. Ask fr help frm ther peple if necessary.
    B. Imprve the flexibility f their schedule.
    C. Learn frm ther peple as quickly as pssible.
    D. Avid abslutely believing their views are better than thers.
