In order to welcome us, my grandma just caught a duck and cut off the duck’s head. I felt very scared about this scene. After that, eating meat would remind me of the poor duck. I ate less and less meat, until I didn’t eat meat at all when I was twelve years old.
M: I get it. To be honest, I have the same feeling. I will feel sick once I think of the picture in my mind. What did your family think about your decision?
W: Well, my parents weren’t used to it at first. It took them three weeks to accept my diet habit. It wasn’t easy for Mom who had to cook different meals for me. It would make her tired easily.

In the live-streaming (直播) channel of Yang Weiyun, no singing or dancing is performed nor are products sold. Yang teaches pinyin, reading and writing, something that has been most familiar to her for the past 50 years. The difference is her students are mostly adults.
The 73-year-old comes from Huainan city of Anhui province and is an experienced educator. She had been a Chinese teacher in an elementary school for 50 years. In retirement, Yang also wanted to do something meaningful. The rise of short video platforms gave her the idea of continuing her education attempt through live-streaming online. The retiree opened her live-streaming account in May 2021 and offered free pinyin courses designed for kindergarten pupils about to attend primary schools. However, she gradually learned among her viewers there are a lot of illiterate (文盲) adults.
Yang said she found many illiterate adults develop a sense of lack of confidence. They are afraid to go to new places, worried that they couldn’t teach their children or read their boss’s instructions. So, she added targeted content to meet their needs. “Many illiterate adults didn’t have the chance to go to school when they were young. They are the ones in urgent need of becoming literate. I wanted to give them a new starting point,” Yang said.
According to the seventh national census (人口普查) carried out last year, there are 38 million illiterate adults in China. Yang’s live-streaming channel offers an easy and private way for those who want to overcome adult illiteracy.
Yang said students learning through her live-streaming channel each have their own demands. So she always prepares her classes carefully after concluding a live-streaming session. She has tried her best to figure out what ways the students can learn and remember better, and her biggest wish now is to see these students graduate from her classes.
24. What’s Yang’s original purpose when she attempted teaching online?
A. To teach retired adults Chinese.
B. To spread Chinese character culture.
C. To teach kids before primary school.
D. To sell products in her live-streaming channel.
25. Why does Yang’s live-streaming class become a hit among adults?
A. She was an experienced and respectable teacher.
B. Many people believe her classes are beneficial for their children.
C. Her class is vivid and lively with singing or dancing performance.
D. Many illiterate adults can learn Chinese in an easy and private way in her class.
26 Which of the following can best describe Yang?
A. Devoted and helpful. B. Caring and brave.
C. Warm-hearted and strict. D. Persistent and honest.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

根据第四段中“Yang’s live-streaming channel offers an easy and private way for those who want to overcome adult illiteracy.(Yang直播频道为那些想要克服成人文盲的人提供了一种简单而私密的方式)”可知,Yang的直播在不识字的成年人中走红,是因为许多不识字的成年人可以在她的课堂上以一种简单而私密的方式学习汉语,故选D。
根据第二段中“She had been a Chinese teacher in an elementary school for 50 years. In retirement, Yang also wanted to do something meaningful.(她在一所小学当了50年的语文老师。退休后,Yang也想做一些有意义的事情)”及第四段中“Yang’s live-streaming channel offers an easy and private way for those who want to overcome adult illiteracy.(Yang的直播频道为那些想要克服成人文盲的人提供了一种简单而私密的方式)”可知,Yang献身于教育事业,退休后用直播的方式帮助不识字的成年人学习汉语,故选A。

C
There has been a very serious decline(下降) in the numbers of shallow-water fish as a result of overfishing. People still want to eat fish, so the fishing industry must look at other sources, especially the deep waters of the Atlantic. This has resulted in a sharp decline in the numbers of many of the species caught.
Protective measures will have to be put into effect if these deep-sea fish are to survive. Research on five such species shows that numbers have reduced by between 87 percent and 98 percent. This puts them on the list of “extremely endangered”. Many species could well disappear completely if the present trend continues. These are species that have been swimming in our oceans for hundreds of millions of years.
The problem is stressed by the fact that the decline in numbers happened in less than twenty years. Deep-sea fish take a long time to reproduce and normally live for many years. Unfortunately, their reproduction rate is very low. The average size of such fish also declined, with one species showing a 57 percent decline in average size. This is of typical concern, as large fish tend to produce more descendants than small ones.
None of these facts has been taken into consideration by the fishing industry. The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding(快速繁殖) fish like sardine and herring. It is like killing elephants as if they reproduced at the same rate as rabbits.
The damage done by overfishing goes beyond the sea environment. Millions of people make a living in the fishing industry. Billions of people rely on fish for protein. Measures must be taken to not only preserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security.
28. Why did people start fishing for deep-sea fish?
A. Because deep sea fish tastes better.
B. Because there are not enough fish to eat in the shallow sea.
C. Because technological development makes it easier to catch deep-sea fish.
D. Because water pollution in shallow sea areas is serious.
29. According to paragraph 3, what serious results have been caused by the fishing of deep-sea fish?
A. There are deep-sea fish species that are completely extinct.
B. Deep-sea fish have lost their ability to reproduce.
C. Deep-sea fish reproduce more slowly.
D. The size of deep-sea fish has decreased.
30. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. The fishing industry catches deep-sea fish in a ruinous way.
B. Elephants reproduce at the same rate as rabbits.
C. Sardine and herring are also endangered like deep-sea fish.
D. Elephants are being killed in large numbers.
31. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Fast-breeding fish do not need protection.
B. The decline in deep-sea fish has occurred in the last 20 years.
C. The results of overfishing should be taken seriously.
D. The destruction of the deep-sea environment does not affect human life.
B 29. D 30. A 31. C

第一段提到“There has been a very serious decline (下降) in the numbers of shallow-water fish as a result of overfishing. People still want to eat fish, so the fishing industry must look at other sources, especially the deep waters of the Atlantic. This has resulted in a sharp decline in the numbers of many of the species caught.”(由于过度捕捞,浅水鱼类的数量已经严重下降。
第三段第二句提到“Deep-sea fish take a long time to reproduce and normally live for many years. Unfortunately, their reproduction rate is very low. The average size of such fish also declined, with one species showing a 57 percent decline in average size. ”(深海鱼类需要很长时间才能繁殖,通常可以活很多年。不幸的是,它们的繁殖率非常低。这些鱼的平均尺寸也在下降,其中一个物种的平均尺寸下降了57%。)深海鱼需要很长时间繁殖,且繁殖率很低,对深海鱼的过度捕捞使得深海鱼的尺寸也在下降。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。第四段提到“The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding(快速繁殖) fish like sardine and herring. It is like killing elephants as if they reproduced at the same rate as rabbits.”(深海鱼类被当作沙丁鱼和鲱鱼等快速繁殖的鱼类来捕捞。 故选A。
第二第三段讲述了深海鱼类因为过度捕捞而面临的严重的后果,最后一段提到“The damage done by overfishing goes beyond the sea environment. Millions of people make a living in the fishing industry. Billions of people rely on fish for protein. Measures must be taken to not only preserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security. ”(过度捕捞造成的破坏超出了海洋环境。数以百万计的人以捕鱼业为生。数十亿人依靠鱼类获取蛋白质。必须采取措施,不仅要保护生态系统,还要维持生计和确保粮食安全。)由此判断,目前人们面临的问题是,不仅要保证人们的生计、食物同时还要保证生态系统的稳定,因此过度捕捞的问题一定要严肃对待。故选C。
D
Even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence, it’s time to pay attention to ChatGPT, because this one is a big deal. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can accomplish.
ChatGPT is built on top of the OpenAI GPT-3 family of large language models. It lets you type in natural-language prompts and then offers conversational replies. It remembers the thread of your dialogue, using previous questions and answers to inform its next responses. It finds relevant information in its oceans of training data, and changes that into plausible-sounding(貌似有理的) paragraphs of text.
You can ask it countless questions and often will get an answer that’s useful. For example, you can ask it encyclopedia questions like, “Explain Newton’s laws(定律) of motion.” You can tell it, “Write me a poem.” and when it does, say, “Now make it more exciting.” You can ask it to write a computer program that’ll show you all the different ways you can arrange the letters of a word.
A few days after its launch, more than 1 million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS analyst Lloyd Walmsley estimated in February 2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in January, accomplishing in 2 months what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two and a half years.
Many people fear that ChatGPT might help students cheat better. But as with many other technology developments, it’s not a simple black-and-white situation. Decades ago, students could copy encyclopedia entries and use calculators, and more recently, they’ve been able to use search engines and Wikipedia. ChatGPT offers new abilities for everything from helping with research to doing your homework for you absolutely.
Dustin York, an associate professor of communication at Maryville University, hopes educators will learn to use ChatGPT as a tool and realize it can help students think critically.
“Educators thought that Google, Wikipedia, and the Internet itself would ruin education, but they did not.” York said, “what worries me most are educators who may actively try to discourage the acknowledgment of AI like ChatGPT. It is a tool, not a villain(恶棍).”
32. What is ChatGPT?
A. A search engine system. B. A homework query system.
C. A navigation system. D. An intelligent chat system.
33. Which function of ChatGPT is Not mentioned in this passage?
A. Chatting by voice. B. Explaining the meaning of something.
C. Creative writing. D. Computer programming.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards ChatGPT in this article?
A. Negative. B. Objective.
C. Supportive. D. Not mentioned in the article.
35 What is Not true about the content of this article?
A. ChatGPT can help students with their homework.
B. ChatGPT reduces students’ ability to think.
C. Some educators consider AI technology harmful to education.
D. You can get a useful answer to almost any question in ChatGPT.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones(荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. ____37____ Containing this urge(冲动) for long may increase the risk of diseases and worsen the emotion.
Some doctors say that expressing anger can be dangerous as well. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
____38____ The first step they advise is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “____39____ Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
And another good way to deal with anger, as doctors add, is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. ____40____
A. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
B. After all, laughter is the most effective cure for bad emotions.
C. It’s not wise to express anger violently either.
D. They advise you to escape from the reality for a while.
E. Do not express your anger while angry.
F. People may cope with their anger in various ways.
G. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.
F 37. A 38. G 39. E 40. B
文章第一句提到“Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.”(医生说,愤怒是一种极具破坏性的情绪。 后文提到“Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Some burst with anger, screaming and yelling, or even throwing and smashing things. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.”(有些人以冷静合理的方式公开表达愤怒。有些人勃然大怒,大喊大叫,甚至扔东西砸东西。但也有人把愤怒藏在心里。他们不能或不愿表达它。这被称为抑制愤怒。)根据首段第一句可知愤怒带给人身体的破坏性,后文则提到了不同人处理生气的不同方式。说明生气是一种正常的情感,处理方式可能会导致其具有破坏性。F项“People may cope with their anger in various ways.”(人们可能用不同的方式来处理他们的愤怒。)
前文提到“They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.”(它们会加速心率,升高血压,或使糖进入血液等。) A项“In general the person feels excited and ready to act.”(一般来说,人会感到兴奋,准备采取行动。) 故选A。
后文提到“The first step they advise is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. ”(他们建议的第一步是承认你生气了,并认识到愤怒的真正原因,然后决定这个原因是否严重到足以让你生气。)由此判断可知这些是医生给出的如何正确处理生气的解决方案。G项“Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.”(医生说,解决办法是学习如何处理愤怒。)
后文提到“Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”(等到你的愤怒冷却下来,你能够冷静而合理地表达自己。) E项“Do not express your anger while angry.”(生气的时候不要表达)该项符合文意。故选E。
前文提到“And another good way to deal with anger, as doctors add, is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. ”(医生补充说,另一个处理愤怒的好方法是在让你生气的情况下找到幽默。)由此判断可知幽默会带来笑声,欢笑比生气健康得多。B项“After all, laughter is the most effective cure for bad emotions.”(毕竟,笑是治疗坏情绪最有效的方法。)

The house was flooded by the fresh aroma (香味) as Jack’s mom took the cookies out of the oven (烤箱). Jack stood by the kitchen table watching as his mouth watered for the fresh cookies. ‘‘You’ll get some cookies after dinner, Jack. You just have to wait till then,” Mom said before cleaning up the kitchen and leaving the room for the hotel where she worked as a clerk in the front desk.
It had been quite some time before Mom made cookies two months ago. She was always busy working, with little time to accompany her kids. Jack knew that the right thing to do would be listen to his mom, but he felt very attracted by the cookies. So when Mom left the kitchen and walked out of the door, he removed the cover from the cookie box and thought, “Mom won’t know if I just take one.” Then he took a deep breath, picked up a cookie and snacked on it, enjoying every last bit.
“Maybe if I take just one more, Mom won’t find out,” he said to himself as he took another one. “Does it matter if I eat one more? OK, just one more. Just one more,” he repeated to himself and took yet another cookie from the box. Then he simply could not stop eating, and kept taking cookies one after another from the box till only one cookie was left. As he realized what he had done, he gasped in panic. “What shall I tell my mom?” Jack stayed in his room, thinking about how to escape this situation.
Soon it was dark. Mom returned home to have dinner with him and his sister Mabel, who just came back from their neighbour’s home. As everyone finished their food, Mom went to fetch the cookies, but to her surprise, there was only one cookie left in the box! “Oh, my God! Where are the cookies?” she asked.

So Jack gathered the courage to go to Mom’s bedroom.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible Version
Hearing Mom’s words, Jack was nervous with his face pale. “It must have been Mabel. I saw her around the kitchen,” Jack lied, blaming his little sister. Hearing this, Mabel was shocked, with her mouth open and eyes widening. She denied, but Mom didn’t scold them and sent them to bed instead. The rest of the night Jack felt regretful for what he had done, tossing and turning in bed, and finally he decided to tell Mom the truth and say sorry to Mabel.
So Jack gathered the courage to go to Mom’s bedroom. “Sorry, Mom. I ate the cookies, not Mabel,” he hung his head in shame. Mom hugged him, saying in a gentle voice, “I had known all along, but I wanted you to have the courage to tell the truth.” Jack then realized that he shouldn’t give in to greed or blame his mistake on others. “I’m proud that you came to me with the truth,” appreciated Mom. Only then did Jack learn that being honest and responsible wasn’t that hard after all.
