Given the buzz it’s created, there’s a gd chance yu’ve heard abut ChatGPT. It’s an interactive chatbt pwered by machine learning. The technlgy has basically devured the entire Internet, reading the cllective wrks f humanity and learning patterns in language that it can recreate. All yu have t d is give it a prmpt (提示), and ChatGPT can d an endless array f things: write a stry in a particular style, answer a questin, explain a cncept, cmpse an email—write a cllege essay-and it will spit ut cherent, seemingly human—written text in secnds. The technlgy is bth awesme and terrifying.
22-year-ld Edward Tian is wrking feverishly n a new app t cmbat misuse f ChatGPT.
Over the last cuple years, Tian has been studying an AI system called GPT-3, a predecessr t ChatGPT that was less user-friendly and largely inaccessible t the general public because it was behind a paywall. As part f his studies this fall semester, Tian researched hw t detect text written by the AI system while wrking at Princetn’s Natural Language Prcessing Lab.
Then, as the semester was cming t a clse, OpenAI, the cmpany behind GPT-3 and ther AI tls, released ChatGPT t the public fr free. Fr the millins f peple arund the wrld wh have used it since, interacting with the technlgy has been like getting a peek int the future; a future that nt t lng ag wuld have seemed like science fictin.
Fr many users f the new technlgy, wnderment quickly turned t alarm. Hw-many jbs will this kill? Will this empwer nefarius (恶意的) actrs and further crrupt ur public discurse (公共话语)? Hw will this disrupt ur educatin system? What is the pint f learning t write essays at schl when AI-which is expected t get expnentially better in the near future-can d that fr us?
Tian had an idea. What if he applied what he had learned at schl ver the last cuple years t help the public identify whether smething has been written by a machine?
Tian already had the knw-hw and even the sftware n his laptp t create such a prgram. Irnically, this sftware, called GitHub C-Pilt, is pwered by GPT-3. With its assistance, Tian was able t create a new app within three days. It’s a testament t the pwer f this technlgy t make us mre prductive.
On January 2nd, Tian released his app GPTZer. It basically uses ChatGPT against itself, checking whether “there’s zer invlvement r a lt f invlvement” f the AI system in creating a given text.
When Tian went t bed that night, he didn’t expect much fr his app. When he wke up, his phne had blwn up. He saw cuntless texts and DMs frm jurnalists, principals, teachers, yu name it, frm places as far away as France and Switzerland. His app, which is hsted by a free platfrm, became s ppular it crashed. Excited by the ppularity and purpse f his app, the hsting platfrm has since granted Tian the resurces needed t scale the app’s services t a mass audience.
    43. Which f the fllwing statements is TRUE abut GPT-3?
    A. It’s designed and researched by Edward Tian in Princetn University
    B. Nt many rdinary peple have used it because it is nt free.

Psychlgical science is full f interesting tpics, many f which tell a cherent picture f human nature, but sme f which create seemingly cntradictry stries. A case in pint is the tricky, and misunderstd, verlap between strength-based science and the research n narcissism (自恋).
There is nw cnvincing evidence t shw that narcissism is n the rise, especially in ur yuth. Sme researchers have gne s far as t say that it is ccurring in epidemic prprtins, with abut 25% f yung peple shwing symptms f narcissism. The inflated eg f Generatin Me is reflected in reality TV, celebrity wrship, ut-f-cntrl cnsumerism and materialism…perhaps even a new type f president.
We are crrect t be cncerned abut this phenmenn but ur fear that all kids are ptential narcissists has caused an unhelpful cunter-reactin t appraches that seek t make ur children and teens feel gd abut themselves.
In my wn research n strength-based parenting it is cmmn fr peple t wrngly label this apprach as a recipe fr narcissism. Their argument seems t be that a child wh knws their strengths will autmatically view themselves as better than everyne else. It is argued that the self-assurance that cmes with identifying and using their psitive qualities will make a child arrgant, selfish and uncaring. Genuine cnfidence abut ne's strengths is categrized as ver-cnfidence; desirable self-knwledge is branded as excessive self-admiratin.
Why des this ccur? It's partly because mre is knwn abut narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychlgy has largely stayed within the limit f academic jurnals r has been applied nly within certain cntexts such as the wrkplace, research n narcissism has made its way int the mass media and int ur cllective cnsciusness. The New Yrk Times nted that narcissism is a favred "g-t" tpic and that peple everywhere are diagnsing thers with it.
The fear that a strength-based apprach will cause narcissism als ccurs because we unknwingly fall prey t binary (非此即彼) thinking. We mistakenly believe that ne cannt be bth cnfident and humble. We fcus n Dnald Trump and Kim Kardashian rather than Mahatma Gandhi and Mther Teresa. There's n way that Gandhi and Mther Teresa culd have achieved what they did withut cnfidence in their strengths, and yet they are bth pillars f mdesty and selflessness.
When we assume that strength-fcus is the same as a self-fcus, We fail t entertain the idea that peple wh knw their strengths are, actually, mre likely t be pr-scial and fcus n helping thers.
It's tempting t cnclude that every yung persn is at risk f becming a narcissist but I'd like t stand up fr the thusands f yung kids I have wrked with wh are caring, thughtful and humble — even when they use their strengths.
    47. Why teenagers' strengths are ften mistaken fr narcissism?
    A. Strengths psychlgy is less accessible t the general public.
    B. Academic jurnals and mass media reprt mre n narcissism.
    C. There is a lack f strengths in ur cllective cnsciusness.
    D. Numbers f peple are diagnsed with narcissism by dctrs.
    48. The authr mentins Gandhi and Teresa in paragraph 6 t shw that________.
    A. they are bth victims f binary thinking
    B. ne can be bth mdest and sure f himself
    C. cnfidence is quite imprtant fr celebrities
    D. public figures unknwingly fall prey t narcissism
    49. What's the authr's attitude twards yung kids' strength-based appraches?
    A. Skeptical.
    B. Favrable.
    C. Neutral.

I viewed almst everything in a negative way, and I figured I had t experience smething that wuld make me appreciate things that I had.
I vlunteered at the nursing hme fr a year where my neighbr vlunteered. I brught snacks, cffee and games fr the elderly patients, talked t them while sharing snacks, and played games like chess and checkers with them. Because they were Kreans, they ften had truble cmmunicating with the helpers wh were hired t help them. I smetimes translated things fr them and ffered t be their translatr whenever they needed help.
By vlunteering at the nursing hme, I changed a lt. I realized hw lucky I am t speak bth Krean and English and that I shuld help ther peple learn Krean as well. I had learned many life lessns thrugh vlunteering. By helping thers, I felt needed in sciety. Nt nly did it enhance my cnfidence, but it als allwed thers t benefit frm it.
Vlunteering is a great pprtunity t imprve neself, thers, and the whle sciety. S if yu ever have the chance, vlunteer! It's smething yu wn't regret!
