(2022秋·江苏扬州·八年级统考期中)The next day was also cold and grey. Nobody talked much during breakfast. Mrs March was pale and tired. The girls tried to hide their tears.
Then Mr Brooke arrived with the carriage and it was time for Mrs March to leave. She kissed her daughter one by one and said, “Keep busy, my dears, and never lose hope!”

“Meg, look after your sisters. If you need help, ask Hannah or Mr Laurence. Jo, be patient and cheerful, and write to me often. Beth and Amy, help with the housework.”
“Yes, Mother! Don’t worry!”

(2022秋·江苏盐城·八年级统考期中)Hello, my name is Jimmy. One day my eighth grade friend said that he was taking the school Geography Bee (比赛) written test the next day. Something in his tone told me that he was not looking forward to the bee. I could not understand! It sounded like a lot of fun to me.
All day, I found myself wishing I was in middle school, so I could take part in the geography bee. During my lunch break I walked up to my social studies teacher’s classroom and asked her if I could take part in the bee for middle school. But she did hesitate (犹豫) a bit because I was too young, just a primary school pupil. I told her that I really loved to learn about our earth, its rivers, mountains, all the human cultures on it. She was still not sure but finally said, “Yes.” I jumped at once!
That next morning I was going to be in the school bee as a participant and learn things I was really interested in. I was not nervous one bit, instead just very excited to be doing something I really loved. We had four written rounds—two on the United States and two on the world. I did surprisingly well and placed on the top ten, beating some of the strong seventh and eighth graders. I lost in the oral(口语) round the next day, but won my teacher’s attention. I came home and looked up the answers to the questions that I and other students lost on.
I placed second in my school the following year, but more importantly, I realized that I really loved geography and enjoyed the time I spent learning it. I may have lost that first bee, but I won the world; a love for that world; love to explore that world—one country, one mountain, one river, one landform at a time; and that is certainly the biggest win for me truly!

A.It made him more interested in geography.
B.He was very sorry to lose the geography bee.
C.He placed second in the speaking round the next day.
D.It made him get to know it was hard to learn geography well.

(2022秋·江苏连云港·八年级连云港市新海实验中学校考期中)When I was in the seventh grade, I had problems behaving. My heart was in the right place, but I couldn’t always follow the rules. I played many tricks on my schoolmates. Once, I even pulled a girl’s hair on the school bus to get her attention. As a result, I was repeatedly sent to the office of the principal(校长).
Although I hated going there, I did not hate the principal, Mr. Ratcliff.
Mr. Ratcliff was a kind, elderly man. When he spanked(打屁股) me for putting some ants into a classmate’s pencil box, it didn’t hurt at all, but it did hurt my feelings. I thought so much of him and moments like that seemed to prove I was hopelessly bad.
When I got called to Mr. Ratcliff’s office for the sixth time, I had no idea what I had done. I felt disappointed as I walked down there. I went into his office, sat down, and looked at the floor. Then he said the last thing I expected to hear, “Kevin, I’ve heard you’ve been behaving really well lately. I want you to know how proud I am of you, and I just called you down to my office to give you a peppermint(薄荷糖).”
“Really?” I was surprised.
“Yes. Now you can take that peppermint and go back to class.”
I carried the peppermint with me as if it was a gold coin. When I got into my classroom, I bragged(吹嘘) to my classmates about my turn around, excitedly. I wasn’t so bad after all.
Mr. Ratcliff was really kind. He made me realize that I was just a kid who had problems with behavior. He bought some peppermints and took the time to notice me when I got something—anything right. “But I don’t really know the rules,” said Angela nervously. “Well, let’s practice shooting (射门)! All you have to do is to score a goal (进球) to get a point,” suggested Lily. “OK! Let’s go and put our new sports clothes on!” answered May.
Peter chose two large sticks as goalposts (球门柱). Then, looking important, he said, “Since I’m the only boy here, I’ll be the goalkeeper (守门员). Let’s start!”
Angela was the first to shoot. She ran up to the ball and…oops! She fell over without even kicking the ball! Everyone started laughing. Lily was next. was joining the class. “Her name is Luz,” said Mrs. Ferrara. “She is from the Lakeland School. She is interested in maths and music.”
Luz walked into our classroom on Monday morning. She was using a folding cane(折叠杖). I think she used it to make sure her feet would not knock into things. Mrs. Ferrara gave her a seat in the front of the room. Her desk was far from the window. Maybe the bright light near the window made trouble for her.
Some of the children wanted to help Luz get in line for lunch. She refused quietly: “Thanks, but I don’t need help.” Jose tried to help her walk downstairs to lunch, but again she answered, “Thank you, I don’t need help.”
I introduced myself at lunch. “Hi, Luz, I am Sasha, and I came from Russia last year.” She replied softly, “Hi, Sasha. I was born in California, but my parents came from Mexico. ”
Luz seemed to keep away from us. I thought she looked a little sad. One day, I dared to ask. “Why are you sad, Luz?”She looked at me and didn’t say anything for a moment. Then she said, “I miss my friends in my old school. They knew me already. They knew what I could do. They knew when I needed help and when I didn’t.”
In October, things began to get better. It was time for chorus (合唱队) to begin practicing. Luz and I both joined. Luz had a great voice! When clubs were announced, Luz chose Math Club. She was a math whiz! Soon Luz was helping others in the class who had difficulty with math. Luz looked happier now. She talked more.
