Have you ever taken a look at a few lovely chickens and desired to touch and kiss them? Apparently, for some the urge is hard to resist. However, according to an updated warning by the Centers for Disease Control(CDC), doing so could spread dangerous-maybe even life-threatening -Salmonella(沙门菌). So no matter how irresistible those little feathered birds may seem, avoid giving them a kiss.
This isn't the first time the CDC has warned against getting your poultry(家禽)fresh. Back in 2018 Halloween, they advised against dressing the birds up for fear of spreading Salmonella. Then again, in May this year, with 474 cases reported, another warning was issued. According to interviews with 271 of those affected, 77 percent had been in contact with poultry before getting sick.
"Backyard poultry, like chicken and ducks, can carry Salmonella bacteria even if they look healthy and clean," writes the CDC. "These bacteria can easily spread to anything in the areas where the poultry live. You can get sick from touching your poultry or anything in their environment and then touching your mouth or food, and swallowing Salmonella bacteria."
Most people who come into contact with the Salmonella bacteria will experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Children are particularly affected—one in three sick people are below the age of five—intelligible given their weaker immune(免疫)systems and natural love for the birds.
The CDC recommends that parents shouldn't let little children touch chicks, ducks, or other backyard poultry and make sure that if they do, they should wash their hands thoroughly afterward. Likewise, adults are instructed to do the same after touching backyard poultry and their eggs should be cleaned, stored, and cooked correctly to avoid the infection of Salmonella.
This might be easier said than done-for many people, backyard chickens are beloved-but if you really love them, stop physical displays of affection in case you wind up with eggs on your face. It turns out to be a bit of harm.
24. Why does CDC repeatedly warn people not to kiss chickens?
A. To protect the poultry. B. To show love to chickens.
C. To get rid of Salmonella. D. To stay safe from danger.
25. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By showing statistics.
C. By making comparison. D. By interviewing victims.
26. What does the underlined word "intelligible" mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Understandable. B. Irresistible. C. Disapproval. D. Controversial.
27. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Stress the importance of affection. B. Add more background information.
C. Provide some advice for the readers. D. Summarize the theme of the passage.
C
Recently I read an article written by Edan Lepucki and titled "Don't Play With Your Kids. Seriously." It makes a case for parents consciously withdrawing from their children ’s playtime until those children are able to play independently all the time.
According to Edan Lepucki, there are two main reasons. One is that it allows the child time and space to delve into wonderful imaginary worlds that he or she is not able to enter in quite the same way if a parent is present.
The second reason is that it gives parents a break. With everything else we do on a daily basis—feeding, cleaning, disciplining, educating, transporting, and more—it's simply too much to be expected to entertain our kids actively, as well. Lepucki describes a sense of exhaustion to which I can relate. "The constant quarrelling was so exhausting that my husband and I didn't have the energy to play the way my son preferred. After I scolded him, I felt guilty and frustrated".
Adopting a no-play approach changed everything, improving both the relationship with her son and her own mental wellbeing, and it has done the same for me, with my own three children.
I have another reason for choosing this approach: It builds greater independence in children. Children play differently when adults are present. They tend to rely on adults to solve conflicts, whereas when they're on their own, they have no choice but to rise to the occasion and deal with any issue.
Lenore Skenazy, the author of "Free Range Kids", told me that when adults are present, kids act like kids, but when adults leave, kids become adults. She said, "If there's an adult there, they will take over. So adults need to step back."
Take this as your excuse to stop playing with your kids. Know that it' s perfectly OK to say no, to admit you need a break, and to encourage your children to play without you. Then sit back and observe the clever, imaginative little humans you've created at play. It's a most satisfying feeling.
28. What does the underlined part "delve into" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Develop. B. Change. C. Explore. D. Preserve.
29. How does Lepucki benefit from her parenting style?
A. Her relaxing time is increased. B. She becomes more independent.
C. She makes more adult friends. D. Her physical health has improved.
30. Why is Lenore Skenazy mentioned?
A. To prove kids' poor independence. B. To provide evidence for an opinion.
C. To show kids' changeable character. D. To explain parents' bad effect on kids.
31. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. It Provides Us with Many Benefits to Play Alone
B. Parents Should Help Develop Kids' Independence
C. Refusal Can Create a Harmonious Family Atmosphere
D. It Won't Hurt Your Kids If You Stop Playing with Them
D
We’ve all been there-accidently distanced a new co-worker with a bad joke, or failed to impress the new boss with our first task. You might have been off your game because of a recent failure, but your new co-workers are likely to think that your poor performance is one of your basic characteristics. However, it’s not impossible to change how others view you.
Your co-workers may have built up a certain impression of you-that you’re not leadership material because you’re too quiet, for example. You can’t expect to overturn that thinking with small actions. You need to do something unexpected. If you’ve made them think you’re quiet and never speak up, it won’t be enough to talk once in a meeting. Instead, make a point of being the first person to speak. If your co-workers have to ask themselves, “What got into him?” then you’re on the way to beginning to change their views.
My first impression of Matthew, an employee of mine, was that he was a bit lazy at work. Realizing that I was increasingly unimpressed with him, he made a move. He suggested that we get to know each other better by going to a rock climbing gym-an activity at which he was very experienced, and I was a beginner. His great skills showed me a different side to his abilities.
Sometimes the bad impression your co-workers may have formed has nothing to do with you. Ten years ago, I met a woman at a meeting. Today, we’re close friends. But, she said that she hadn’t liked me at first. She thought I seemed “too positive”-and therefore somewhat fake. It was only after knowing me for years that she realized that was in fact how I was. If you’re patient and continue to act in ways you’re proud of, most people will finally come around.
It’s unfair when we feel misunderstood. But while first impressions are likely to stick, they can-with time and effort-be changed, so that your true talents can be appreciated.
32. What does the underlined phrase “off your game” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. Beaten in a sport. B. Lost in your computer game.
C. Unwilling to accept a new friend. D. Unable to work as well as usual.
33. How can we change others’ impressions of us according to paragraph 2?
A. By surprising them. B. By keeping quiet.
C. By questioning them. D. By organizing meetings.
34. Why did Matthew ask the author to go rock climbing with him?
A. To explore new job chances. B. To show off his climbing skills.
C. To get the author to know him better. D. To push the author to exercise more.
35. What did the woman think of the author at first?
A. Brave. B. Insincere. C. Friendly. D. Impatient.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Going to the zoo is an all-time favorite activity for children and families. 36 In order to make a decision, we must consider the arguments for and against keeping wild animals in zoos.
One benefit of zoos is that they are useful for educating people about animals. We can observe animals at close range and learn more about them than we can from books and the TV. It also provides an opportunity to promote the conservation of endangered species. 37 This helps them to come up with better ways of protecting animals from harm in their natural habitat.
On the other hand, keeping animals in zoos is similar to a prison sentence. Many zoos do not have large enough enclosures to keep animals comfortable. The animals have limited freedom to move about. We often see even the fierce lions lying passively in their enclosures just waiting for their next meal to be served. They suffer from stress and boredom. 38
Another thing we need to consider is the cost of maintaining a zoo. A lot of funds are needed to run a zoo. Money is needed to stock the zoo with all kinds of animals. 39 The animals need food and medical care. Special spaces need to be built to house each type of animals. More staff are needed to clean and maintain the zoo grounds.
40 If you want to see animals, I advise you to go on a safari. For conservation and research, set up sanctuaries like the Sepilok orangutan sanctuary in Sabah. It is kinder to leave the animals in their natural home—the wild.
A. This in turn causes animals to live shorter lives.
B. We have also heard about animals being mistreated.
C. However, some people argue against keeping wild animals in zoos.
D. They have to carry out research on the survival rate of this species.
E. Staff must be hired and trained to take care of each species of animals.
F. In addition, zoos allow scientists to study animal behavior more easily.
G. In conclusion, it is cruel and selfish to keep animals in an unnatural prison.

Dear Sir or Madam,
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being on stage with him.
“Kirstie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me, something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon, it was time to have to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey.” I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment.
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully.

【第一节One possible version】
Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m a student taking summer courses in London now. Learning that volunteers are needed for your coming Chinese painting exhibition, I can’t wait to apply for the position.
First of all, my fluent English enables me to communicate smoothly with British painting lovers. Moreover, I have a wide knowledge of Chinese painting, and I have taken part in several similar activities, which equips me with relevant experience. If accepted, I will spare no effort to introduce those paintings on display and answer questions patiently.
I’d appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration.

【第二节One possible version】
Paragraph 1
Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me, something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.
Paragraph 2
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different. “KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere, I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.

M: Thank you. You too!
Text 10
M: We’re glad to have Dr Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question. Does everyone dream?
W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly, when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don’t remember their dreams or they don’t think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of as a child when they first reported their dreams or it was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer. But suddenly, he stopped having dreams. I asked him what had happened. It turned out that his brother died of a heart attack. And he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event and to dream about it was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about it. Actually, the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming, because it means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you’re dreaming about it and even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams when a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill or when a person has been really sad. If people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don’t allow themselves to even think about it.
