Every year, Time magazine picks out what it calls “The 25 Best Inventions” of the year. Here, Teens has chosen some of the most interesting ones.
Ember Mug
It’s hard to always keep coffee at the right temperature, especially in winter. It’s too hot to drink at first, but before we know it, it gets too cold and loses all its taste. The perfect level of warmth for a cup of coffee only lasts for 37 seconds, which makes the Ember Mug a great invention. It keeps your coffee or tea at a certain temperature, anywhere between 45℃ and 62℃, once you set it through a smartphone app.
Tasty One Top
TV cooking shows make cooking look so easy, but it’s almost impossible to get the recipes to cook the same as how the professionals cook. However, the Tasty One Top DIY cooking companion is here to help. Developed by BuzzFeed, the cooker can be connected to a smartphone app, which has more than 1,700 recipes and videos. You choose a recipe and the app will let the cooker know what to do. For example, it’ll tell you when to turn your steak or when to add certain ingredients.
Jibo
Smart speakers from companies like Amazon and Xiaomi have added a lot of fun to our lives, but they’re still just faceless speakers. However, Jibo, developed by MIT professor Cynthia Breazeal, has brought smart technology to life. Said to be “the world’s first social robot for the home”, Jibo looks like a cartoon character. Inside its “head”, there are various sensors and cameras, which allow it to recognize faces and speech. It can also set alarms, remind you of important things, tell you the weather and read news or messages from your friends and family.
1. How can Tasty One Top help people?
A. By teaching people how to cook. B. By offering people different recipes.
C. By saving energy while cooking. D. By offering different kinds of cooking apps.
2. What can Jibo probably be?
A. A cartoon character. B. A faceless robot. C. A family assistant. D. A smart alarm.
3. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To advertise hightech products. B. To introduce some new inventions.
C. To encourage subscription to Time. D. To tell about some “tasty” products.

Kite surfing is a sport that takes place on the surface of the water on top of boards that are similar in design to wakeboards (尾波滑水板), with the surfer pulled by a kite. The popularity of kite surfing has grown, although it is rather difficult to master. Kite surfing uses the same equipment as kite boarding, but is generally given more to riding on top of waves, rather than on smaller lakes or other calm bodies of water.
Early experiments in kite transportation took place through the 19th century, and at the dawn of the 20th century Samuel Cody crossed the English Channel using kites and a small boat. Kite surfing itself, however, wasn’t really born until the late 1970s. Beginning in that decade, more people became involved in using kites for personal transport and sport. Kite technology itself advanced enormously during the 1970s, with kites becoming much more controllable.
The early kite surfing was rather accidental, but innovators continued to develop the technology to make it easier to control and safer. By the late 1990s, kite surfing was becoming popular off the coast of Maui, France and throughout the world. In 1997, a special kite system was built specifically for kite surfing, which helped kite surfing into the mainstream.
Because of the high speeds and the dangers, it is generally recommended that would-be kite surfers take at least a few basic classes to learn the fundamentals. The main attraction of kite surfing is the potential for amazing tricks. The kite allows the surfer to experience enormous jumps, flying through the air for large distances before hitting the water in a controlled fashion. Like skateboarding, kite surfing makes use of a number of board grabs, with complex tricks possible due to the long period of time the surfer can remain in the air.
4. What does the author mainly intend to tell us in Paragraph 1?
A. What is kite surfing. B. Where to go kite surfing.
C. How to enjoy kite surfing. D. Why people like kite surfing.
5. In the 19th century, people intended to use kite for ________.
A. sport B. experiment
C. entertainment D. transportation
6. What can we know from the third paragraph?
A. Kite surfing often leads to accidents.
B. Maui is home to kite surfing.
C Kite control is the key to kite surfing.
D. Kite surfing came into being in the 1990s.
7. What is most charming for people surfing?
A. Its potential for tricks. B. Its long time in the air.
C. Its speed across the water. D. Its big distance over the water.

The safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage is considered an important part of sustainable development. Among the 629 UNESCO-listed traditions are five entries in Estonia, the most recent of which is the building and use of dugout canoes in the Soomaa region.
Every year, before spring, Soomaa National Park transforms into an almost drowned world, when water from melting snow in the eastern uplands floods the low-lying forests, wetlands, roads and yards of the residents who still live here. The water level rose so high that villagers could roll a dugout canoe right through their windows and into their living rooms. Everyone has had to learn to adapt to the natural annual phenomenon.
Building a dugout canoe requires a good trunk of an aspen, which grows throughout the forests of Estonia. Once cut down, the trees are peeled and shaped like a cigar using an axe. From here, the inside of the boat is carved out to give it shape. Builders cut the frame down to a few centimetres in thickness. A long log fire is then built alongside the canoe, which is filled with several bucketfuls of water and left to warm up. Once the water has evaporated, sticks are squeezed into the frame lengthways to open it up. Aspen is a soft wood and a trunk half a metre across can be expanded into a metre-wide boat. The boat is then left to cool in the shade and is traditionally finished the following spring, once the wood has fully dried, when it’s given its final design and covered with tar.
Aivar Ruukel, one of only five Estonians who still preserve the skill, chooses to build them as a way to connect with the history, As a young man, Ruukel attended workshops led by two master boat builders, both in their 70s at the time. He hopes that by the time he’s 70 there will be more young people doing the same. Enthusiasts hope that its joining the heritage list will safeguard the ancient practice and attract the next generation of boatmasters to keep the tradition alive.
8. Why do villagers have to preserve dugout canoes?
A. To survive floods. B. To go canoeing in the park.
C. To learn about a natural phenomenon. D. To apply for intangible cultural heritage.
9. What’s the right order of building a dugout canoe?
① The boat is left in the shade to dry.
② The inside of the boat is carved out to give it shape.
③ Builders warm up the canoe and open the frame up.
④ The boat is given the design and covered with the tar.
⑤ Builders remove the barks and make the trees into cigar shapes.
A. ⑤③②④① B. ②⑤④①③ C. ⑤②③①④ D. ②③⑤④①
10. Which statement will Ruukel probably agree with?
A. Young people shall become boatmasters.
B. The practice will die out in the next generation.
C. More people are needed to pass on the tradition.
D. One cannot master the skill without learning history.

The world is on a fast track toward an autonomous future. From off-road tractors and rural transit systems to air vehicles and space exploration, automation will enhance safety, increase efficiency and improve people’s lives. The more we can automate, the more we can protect people’s life and happiness.
To make the autonomous future safe and secure, manufacturers and operators will need reliable, assured positioning, said Michael Ritter, president of Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division. At the HxGN LIVE Global 2022 event, he gave an overview of assured positioning and demonstrated how it provides the foundation for safe autonomy.
Ritter explained how positioning technologies can enable the future of autonomy for good publicity across industries including agriculture, mining and automotive. “We’ve all heard about autonomy,” he said. “What’s one of the big problems there? It doesn’t always work as advertised.” He mentioned Tesla’s AutoPilot as an example. “In our industry, we need to have autonomy solutions that we can trust.” “If that is not a hundred percent waterproof, crystal clear, and protected from outside interference (干扰) and cybersecurity threats, you can’t trust that positioning,” he said. “We have to know where we are at all times, and we cannot have that signal falsified (歪曲).”
While Ritter doesn’t think he’ll see the universal use of autonomous vehicles in passenger traffic during his lifetime “because laws will be in the way.” he said. “Applications in off-road autonomy — construction, mining and agriculture — are here today, which all take place in controllable spaces; laws are not such a big problem.” he said. “This is happening right now. We don’t have to wait 10 to 20 years for that.”
However, a big safety challenge in expanding autonomy is anticipating “all the stuff that could happen once in a lifetime,” Ritter said. Those can be overcome by real-life testing, multiplying that with simulation (模拟) “a hundred million times over,” and then going “back into real life” and performing “real, extreme testing.”
12. What’s Ritter’s purpose of mentioning Tesla’s AutoPilot?
A. To show its good publicity.
B. To support its assured positioning.
C. To put forward reliable autonomy solutions.
D. To serve as a reminder for the autonomy-related industries.
13. What is Ritter’s attitude towards the development of autonomy according to paragraph 4?
A. Cautious. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
14. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Real and extreme testing. B. Real-life testing.
C. A big safe challenge. D. Expanding autonomy.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Big challenges for future automation. B. The impact of automation on daily life.
C. Necessary regulations for safe automation. D. Different fields of automation development.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述的是在自动驾驶不断发展的过程中依旧面临着重大的安全挑战。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“What’s one of the big problems there? It doesn’t always work as advertised.(其中的一个大问题是什么?它并不总是像宣传的那样有效)”以及“ He mentioned Tesla’s AutoPilot as an example. “In our industry, the non-consumer world, we can’t have that,” he added. “We need to have autonomy solutions that we can trust.” (他以特斯拉的自动驾驶仪为例。“在我们这个行业,在非消费领域,我们不能这样做,”他补充说。“我们需要我们可以信任的自主解决方案。”)”可知,此处Ritter提到Tesla’s AutoPilot的目的是给消费者提醒,Tesla’s AutoPilot实际提供的功能并不如所宣传的那样有效。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中““Applications in off-road autonomy — construction, mining and agriculture — are here today, which all take place in controllable spaces; laws are not such a big problem.” he said. “This is happening right now.
根据第二段的“To make the autonomous future safe and secure, manufacturers and operators will need reliable, assured positioning, said Michael Ritter, president of Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division.(Hexagon公司自主与定位部门总裁Michael Ritter表示,为了让未来的自动驾驶汽车更加安全可靠,制造商和运营商需要可靠、可靠的定位)”和下文内容可知,文章讲述的是在自动驾驶不断发展的过程中依旧面临着重大的安全挑战,并对此问题进行了分析讨论。故选A。

Are You a Prisoner of Perfection?
Do you struggle for a goal that is beyond your reach? ___16___ Are you setting yourself up for failure and shame when you can’t achieve the unachievable? Understanding what drives perfectionism is the first step toward releasing this self-created anchor that keeps us stuck.
Shame and fear are often the hidden drivers of perfectionism. We believe that if we can fashion a perfectly polished personality, flash our intelligence, and perfect our humour, then no one can hurt us with criticism and we’ll win respect and approval.
___17___ Politicians who display a desperate need to be right and refuse to acknowledge mistakes or uncertainty are often driven by a secret shame. They fear that showing vulnerability(弱点) will expose them to the accusation that they’re weak. They stick to a desire to be right, perfect, and polished, even when it’s obvious that the emperor has no clothes.
Perfectionism keeps us leaning toward the future. We’re constantly evaluating ourselves in order to do better. ___18___ However, if we can’t relax and enjoy lighter moments, then we become prisoners of our perfectionism. We get painfully self-conscious and take ourselves too seriously. Sadly, we deprive(剥夺) ourselves of the simple pleasure of enjoying the moment and being ourselves.
___19___ We realize that failing at any enterprise doesn’t mean that we are a failure. Without failures, we’ll never learn from our mistakes; we’ll never move forward in our lives. Those who succeed have made countless mistakes. The important thing is to learn from our error, forgive ourselves and move on.
Being human, perfection is impossible. ___20___ Releasing ourselves from the desire to protect our image, we’re freed to sail gracefully through our successes and failures—and enjoy our precious life.
A. Do you hold an idealized vision that is impossible to realize?
B. A cure to perfectionism is to make room for our human shortcomings.
C. Do you fear that others will be horrified by what you judge about yourself?
D. The addiction to staying perfect protects us from any sign of being imperfect.
E. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do our best and self-correcting along the way.
F. People who are addicted to perfection are often isolated, even if they seem outgoing and popular.
G. By accepting ourselves as we are and doing our best, we begin to rid the shame that drives perfectionism.
【答案】16. A 17. D 18. E 19. B 20. G

【答案】
Dear Professor Smith,
I am Li Hua, chairman of the student union of Guangming Middle School. Representing our school, I’m writing to convey my sincere appreciation to you for the lecture you gave us last week.
Through your lecture, we have learned that body language is one of the most effective methods of expressing our feelings. For example, smiling is the most universal expression of happiness. Looking away from a person means showing no interest in the person. However, not all cultures greet people in the same way. I do believe the knowledge will be very beneficial when we communicate with people from other countries.
Thank you again for your wonderful lecture.
Yours,
LiHua.

第二节(满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Early one cold November morning, my mother dressed me in thick clothes. “Now come outside with me.” she said. Once outside, she handed me a brown paper bag that held something that smelled like wet dirt.” We need to plant bulbs before the first hard freeze. I have already dug the holes.” she said. “So take each bulb from the bag, drop it in the hole, and then gently push the dirt back into the hole covering the bulb—like so.”
I opened the bag. “These bulbs are ugly and look dead!”
“You're right. They’re not at all pretty. But they’re not dead; they’re just sleeping until spring.”
“And all the bulbs look alike,” I continued. “How do we know what they’ll look like next spring?”
“We won’t know for sure until spring, but that’s the joy of gardening. We’ll just have to be patient.”
All winter long I hoped that the flowers would bloom some day.
One day in late April, I found some pink pushing up through the ground. My mother was excited when I showed her. "Perfect!” she said. “They'll be ready at just the right time.”
A few days later, she took me to the local store where she gathered up colored paper, colored ribbons, and all the baskets on sale. “Okay, now we’re ready to make May baskets.”
“May baskets? What are May baskets?”
“They are small baskets filled with fresh flowers and secretly left at someone’s front door.” Her eyes shone with delight. “So when we get home we’ll cut the flowers that are blooming in the garden to make May baskets. Then tomorrow, May first, we’ll get up early and take them to our neighbors. Doesn’t that sound like fun?”
“But I waited all winter for the flowers to bloom, and they’re so beautiful. And... and... I thought we would keep them forever,” I said, close to tears.
“I know you’re disappointed, sweetie, but flowers—like kindness—are meant to be shared. Their beauty is not ours to keep. You understand?” my mother replied in a tender voice.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“No! I don’t understand. I want to keep the flowers.” I protested.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Shortly after dawn the next morning, we began our journey through the neighborhood.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “No! I don’t understand. I want to keep the flowers forever.” I protested. Noticing my obvious reluctance, Mom knelt down and petted my face, “I know you do, sweetie. But in the end, you’ll understand that every drop of kindness you give away returns to you in another way. Just wait and see.” So later that afternoon, we cut most of the flowers from the garden, tied them with colored ribbons, wrapped them in colored paper, and then placed them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh overnight. Afterward, I headed to bed, but all night the uneasiness of losing those beautiful flowers gripped my heart, making it hard for me to fall asleep.
Shortly after dawn the next morning, we began our journey through the neighborhood. At each house, we hid behind our neighbors’ bushes. I ran to the front door, left the basket and then rang the doorbell, giggling as I ran for cover. When I saw our neighbors’ faces cracked into delighted smiles because of those anonymous May baskets, a surge of pride and happiness flooded in waves. My mother was right—every drop of kindness you give away returns to you in another way.
