My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I tried incredibly hard to focus on the words that I spent hours putting down on paper. I tried to conquer my fear of speaking in public on numerous occasions throughout my life. During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting. Public speaking had been my nemesis for as long as I could remember.
Then in my mid-thirties, I decided to join the public speaking group Toastmasters. At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, but nothing seemed to work.
It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak out. Science has made this country a place where dreams come true — this is why we all need to protect science. In addition, as a science writer, I try to get readers to understand how science is related to their daily lives.
So I ended up on that frightening stage on that sunny Saturday in April — Earth Day. Despite the body shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I looked out into the crowd of like-minded science supporters and I felt comfort.
Reaching that milestone goal of getting through a speech truly changed me. At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures.
    24. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “nemesis” in Para. 1?
    A. Advantage. B. Annoyance. C. Preference. D. Confusion.
    25. How did the author behave about public speaking after leaving Toastmasters?
    A. He began to feel less worried. B. He became a polished speaker.
    C. He remained a shy speaker. D. Things became worse for him.
    26. What made the author want to speak out on Earth Day?
    A. It was a good chance to learn science. B. He must rise up to defend his profession.
    C. It was a project organized by Toastmasters. D. He couldn’t have people attacking science.
    27. What lesson did the author draw from his successful speech?
    A. Passion can motive us to achieve the unachievable.
    B. Any difficulty can be overcome with great effort.
    C. Science can lead us to make wonderful changes.
    D. Frustration can be stepping stones to success.
    C
Darwin noted that some human emotional expressions might have started as part of a physiological (生理的) function: for example, exposing the teeth to bite food. The function, however, took on meaning and became a form of communication which signals anger.
The same may be true for the animals. Baby monkeys cry for attention. They also cry to signal to an adult that they want to be carried.
“Chimpanzees do make upset voice when they are being weaned (断奶) by their mothers or have lost their mothers or another individual,” says Anne Pusey, a professor at the University of Minnesota. “They whimper (呜咽) and cry and scream. When we hear these calls, the emotion involved seems obvious. However, they do not weep in the sense of producing tears. I have seen an adolescent male whimpering when he lost sight of his older brother with whom he had been traveling.”
Babies of many mammalian species, including rats, cry. Moreover, when a baby rat cries, often his mother brings the fallen pup back into the nest. This is probably a straightforward communication, as it is with humans. However, psychologists at the University of Iowa aren’t convinced.
The Iowan researchers can cause the same crying sounds by producing large decreases and then increases in blood flow. The blood flow also goes down when baby rats get cold. Thus, they conclude baby rats cry in the same way that we sneeze. Of course the rat baby could be crying because he’s cold and wants his mother to know.
“All young mammals make cries when separated from their mother,” says Jaak Panksepp, a psychologist at Bowling Green State University. “If you’re willing to call this crying, then certainly other animals show this emotional response.” he says, “Some of us take seriously that animals do have emotions.”
    28. According to the first paragraph, what kind of emotion does “exposing the teeth” express?
    A. Disappointment. B. Excitement. C. Anger. D. Happiness.
    29. Which is one probable reason why young chimpanzees might be crying?
    A. They meet their brother. B. They have nothing to eat.
    C. They are being breast-fed. D. They are parted from their mother.
    30. Under what circumstance will baby rats cry just like humans’ sneeze?
    A. Their blood flow is decreased. B. They feel cold and long for affection.
    C. Their blood flow is increased. D. Their mother brings them back home.
    31. Where is the passage most likely taken from?
    A. An animal journal. B. A physiology book. C. A health magazine. D. A cultural newspaper.
    D
    Lichens (地衣)
Lichens look like splashes of paint left behind by a careless painter. Unlike many plants, they do not require soil to grow. They grow on trunk of trees in steaming tropical rain forests, on farmers’ fenceposts, on the bricks of big-city buildings, and on old gravestones. Lichens can tolerate extremes of climate. They grow on rocks in hot springs, on wind-swept mountaintops, and on stones in the driest deserts. In the Arctic, lichens are the principal source of food for reindeer. Whole mountainsides in Antarctica appear green and orange because of the presence of lichens; they are one of the few plants that can survive there. They are among the oldest of known plants. Recently, scientists discovered lichen fossils on a rock in a mine in southwest China that date back 600 million years.
When conditions become harsh, lichens become dormant (休眠). If there is not enough moisture, they simply dry up, but a short rain or even a heavy dew gives them new life. When growing on rock surfaces, lichens produce acids that dissolve (溶解) the minerals, contributing to the process of weathering by which rocks are slowly turned to soil. This property enables lichens to be pioneers. They appear on barren rock rubbed clean by glaciers, fires, lava flows, or floods, beginning the process of soil formation that allows mosses (苔藓) and other plants to later take root. But, despite their hardiness, lichens are extremely sensitive to airborne particles (颗粒). That’s why they serve as an early warning system for air pollution.
It is the acids lichens produce that give them their distinctive colors. Lichens are often spoken of in the same breath as mosses, and some lichens are even called mosses, but true mosses are all distinctively green, whereas lichens appear in many vivid colors. At one time, acids from lichens were used to make dyes, such as the purple dye, the blue dye, and the red dye, and they are sometimes still used that way today. Some lichens, such as oakmoss, contain oils that produce fragrant odors used in scented soaps, cosmetics and perfumes. Some lichens are also known to have antibiotic properties to kill bacteria.
So definite are the form, color, and characteristics of these organisms that for hundreds of years lichens were constantly under scientists’ microscope.
    32. What characteristic of lichens is mainly talked about in paragraph 1?
    A. They grow only on rock surfaces.
    B. They live primarily in cold places.
    C. They have adapted to a wide variety of environments.
    D. They live in remote locations far from human communities.
    33. The author refer to lichens as pioneers in paragraph 2 because they __________.
    A. have their primitive structure B. grow in areas before other plants do
    C. are found in remote parts of the world D. develop so early in the history of the planet
    34. According to paragraph 3, humans use lichens in the following ways EXCEPT __________.
    A. as a means of coloring clothing B. as a type of medicine
    C. as a source of food D. as an ingredient in perfume
    35. Which of the following cases would be probably dealt with in the next paragraph?
    A. Lichens are important in Canada because of their abundance in the north.
    B. Extracts of lichens were sold as herbal medicines to facilitate hair growth.
    C. Glacier Park’s vast array of lichens indicate relatively good air quality.
    D. A German botanist first found lichens are composed of two life forms.

    Healthy See, Healthy Do
Visit the grocery store on an empty stomach, and you will probably come home with a few things you did not plan to buy. But hunger is not the only cause of additional purchases. 36
The checkout area is a particular hotspot for junk food. 37 And a few studies have suggested that simply swapping in healthier options can change customer behavior. A 2012 study in the Netherlands found that hospital workers were more likely to give up junk food for healthy snacks when the latter were more readily available on canteen shelves, for example.
38 It has been working with more than 1,000 store owners to encourage them to order and promote nutritious foods. “Making healthy foods more convenient or appealing can lead to increased sales of those products.” says Tamar Adjoian, a research scientist at the department.
Adjoian and her colleagues wondered if such findings would apply to their city’s crowded urban checkout areas, so they selected three Bronx supermarkets for their own study. 39 Then they recorded purchases over six three-hour periods in each store for two weeks.
Of the more than 2,100 shoppers they observed, just 4 percent bought anything from the checkout area. Among those who did, however, customers in the healthy lines purchased nutritious foods more than twice as often as those in the standard lines. 40 The findings were reported in September in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
The potential influence may seem small, but Adjoian believes that changing more checkout lines will open customers’ eyes to nutritious, lower-calorie foods. Health department officials are now exploring ways to expand healthy options at checkout counters throughout New York City.
    A. They bought unhealthy foods 40 percent less often.
    B. These findings caught the attention of New York City Department of Health.
    C. They replaced candies and cookies with fruits and nuts near the checkout counter.
    D. The supermarkets began to offer nutritious, lower-calorie foods.
    E. These foods give people more energy.
    F. The location of store displays also influences our shopping choices.
    G. The products most commonly found there are sugary and salty snacks.

AR enhances our experience of the real world with digital information and pictures. During the past few years, it 56 (reveal) its power to revolutionize our lives. AR apps and devices are now available as educational aids, which, 57 (use) appropriately, allow students to learn in an interactive and engaging way.
One of the greatest benefits of using AR in education so far is that it has brought science to life. Its potential 58 (bring) the same life to other subjects is equally promising. For example, in Geography classes, AR might allow students to view amazing natural phenomena 59 the limitations of time or place. In History lessons, students could engage with historical 60 (figure). Advocates of AR in education also emphasize its usefulness in remote locations, 61 students do not have easy access to museums or science exhibitions.
Despite the numerous advantages associated with using AR in education, not everybody 62 (convince) that it is a positive development. Critics point out that students are so focused on the 3D display that they don’t attend to the lesson. 63 actually once students become accustomed to these 3D projections, they will be able to refocus on the subject at hand.
It is evident that the 64 (adopt) of AR technology by educators will be a positive development for all involved. It is early days for the use of this technology but its applications in education seem limitless. It is only when we embrace such innovations in technology 65 we can learn of their full potential and develop them.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”. Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then Catherine spotted Landy sitting by herself in a corner.

But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, regardless of what they said.

Then Catherine spotted Landy sitting by herself in a corner. She kept her head down with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. It hit Catherine that the pecking order worked in school, too. Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It’s time for me to make an apology to Landy.” Catherine thought to herself. No sooner had she made up her mind than she announced it to the cool kids surrounding her. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti? Are you crazy?”
