One night, a seriously injured patient was transferred to hospital in Nanjing, Jiangsu, from Anhui province. The patient was hearing-impaired, so it was difficult for medical workers to communicate with him.
At the same time, Chen Xin was studying at the library. He is a senior student of architectural engineering technology in Nanjing Polytechnic Institute. The 20-year-old is also a sign language interpreter. He immediately rushed to the hospital, which is next to his college, after receiving an urgent call. Chen helped the patient communicate with medical staff until the patient was released from the hospital.
“In many cases, some hearing-impaired people have to delay seeking medical treatment for various reasons, which brings health risks and property losses to the group,” said Chen.
Chen knew some deaf friends, but they can only communicate with each other by typing on the mobile phone. This encouraged Chen to learn sign language. In 2018, Chen, then a senior high school student, attended a program by Nanjing Normal University of Special Education to learn from professionals and was certified (认证) as a sign language interpreter.
“Finger flexibility is a key,” Chen said, “I couldn’t make precisely harmonious movements of my fingers at first.” So Chen took part in activities for deaf people to practice more.
Every kind of language has its own grammar system. So does sign language, “Its word order is different from Chinese or English,” Chen said. For example, if you want to say “I love you”, you need to sign “I you love”. “I spent a lot of time getting used to such differences,” Chen said.
After mastering sign language, Chen built close relationships with hearing impaired people and offered to help them. “Many of them turn to me when they go to see a doctor,” Chen said.
Recalling another volunteer experience, Chen said he was very nervous at that time. “We knew little about COVID-19 in February 2020. I was wondering how to explain the virus,” Chen said, “I was afraid of mistakenly translating the term.”
After his graduation, Chen plans to be a professional sign language interpreter and offer services for more hearing impaired people.

    39. What inspired Chen to learn sign language?
    A. A medical emergency he suffered.
    B. A program related to sign language.
    C. The support from some professionals.
    D. The way his deaf friends communicate.
    40. What was a problem facing Chen after mastering sign language?
    A. He had to improve his finger flexibility.
    B. He had trouble explaining some concepts.
    C. He often confused the gestures of words.
    D. He found it difficult to memorize the gestures.

    C. Warm-hearted and thoughtful. D. Talented and modest.
    42. Which do you think is the best title of the passage?
    A. Lending helping hands B. Becoming an interpreter
    C. Learning sign language D. Offering services to people
    C
Mandy and Joe have been married for five years and they both love travelling to new countries. But while this shared hobby brings them together, it is also a source of contention. “I do all the planning and book,” says Mandy. “Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy it, but if Joe paid a bit more attention, he wouldn’t have turned up for a flight to Grenada packed for a winter city break. ‘Jumpers and boots?!’ I cried. ‘You’re supposed to have packed shorts and T-shirts — it’s 30℃ in the Caribbean!’ Then I realized he thought we were going to Granada, in Spain.”
How Joe and Mandy each approach their travel plans is just one example of the many ways in which men and women differ. Yet, is what goes on inside our minds and bodies really so different? Furthermore, are we born that way?
On this issue, scientists are divided. The majority of scientists believed that patterns of behavior thought to be more male or female are learnt firstly from our parents, then from our peers and, ultimately, from the societies in which we live. As Simone de Beauvoir famously said, “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.”
On the other side of the fence sat those who believed that male and female brains are actually wired differently. In one study in which 34 monkeys were required to interact with different types of toys, the males showed a strong preference for toys with wheels rather than soft toys, whereas the females were noticeably drawn to soft toys. These preferences were clearly not the result of parental influence.
Whatever the truth behind the differences between men and women, we can safely conclude that although the social impact on how we think and behave is undeniable, there exists a biological contribution. The question that now needs answering is to what extent biology affects the choices we make and the way other people treat us.

    43. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
    A. Satisfaction. B. Disagreement. C. Inspiration. D. Information.
    44. What topic does the text focus on?
    A. Whether men and women are different. B. Why minds and bodies are so different.
    C. What causes the sex difference. D. How different males and females are.
    45. What does the study about monkeys prove?
    A. Monkeys have their own preferences. B. Parents indeed have strong impacts.
    C. Men and women are born different. D. Females and males behave differently.
    46. Which statement about sex differences does the author probably agree with?
    A. Biology contributes to the difference. B. Biology mostly affects our choices.
    C. Social influence can be ignored. D. Peers have more impact than parents.
    D
If you’ve ever emerged from the shower or returned from your walk with a clever idea or a solution to a problem you had been struggling with, it may not be a surprise. Rather than constantly concentrating on a problem, research from the last 15 years suggests that people may be more likely to have creative breakthroughs when they’re doing a habitual task that doesn’t require much thought.
“People always get surprised when they realize they get interesting, novel ideas at unexpected times,” says Kalina Christoff, a scientist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, “because our culture tells us that we should do it through hard work.”
Now researchers begin to understand why these clever thoughts occur during more passive activities and what’s happening in the brain. They have found that the key is a series of brain activities — within what’s called the default mode (DM) network — that occur while an individual is resting or performing habitual tasks that don’t require much attention.
“Simply put, it is a state that your brain returns to when you’re relaxed,” explains Christoff. “By contrast, when you’re working on a demanding task, the brain’s executive control (EC) systems keep your thinking focused, analytical, and logical.”
Researchers find that the DM network is also involved in the early stages of idea generation, drawing from past experiences and knowledge about the world. When your mind wanders, you’re allowing thoughts to playfully cross your mind, which helps you combine information and ideas in new ways and something clicks.
“A cautionary note: While the DM network plays a key role in the creative process, it is the EC systems that help you to evaluate and apply the creative ideas effectively to your problems in the real world,” Christoff says. “So it’s unwise to place blind faith in the discovery that creative ideas can be generated in the shower or during any other kinds of mind wandering. Instead, you have to do the work to set the groundwork for creative ideas to emerge in the first place.”

    47. What is the most unlikely function of the EC systems?
    A. To start your thinking process. B. To help you analyze.
    C. To let you get novel ideas. D. To keep you focused.
    48. What do the underlined words “something clicks” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A. A clever idea occurs. B. Something drops down.
    C. A memory disappears. D. A funny thought happens.
    49. What is Kalina Christoff’s attitude to the culture of hard work?
    A. Disapproving. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.
    50. Which statement might the author agree with?
    A. Practice makes perfect.
    B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
    C. Everything comes to him who waits.
    D. All work and no break makes Jack a dull boy.

Drawing is a skill that you have to practice if you want it to become better. 51 It is also a great way to relax and give yourself an outlet for creative expression. But there are times when you need to be pushed in order to get your drawing done. Doing it frequently is often hard. It’s not always easy to find time and motivation to do it.
0052 Without it, you will find yourself delaying instead of doing what you want on canvas (画布). The key to motivating yourself to draw often is to break down the process into smaller and smaller, more manageable parts so you can gain motivation and keep drawing.
Here are some techniques that can help push you in the right direction: set a timer for 10 minutes and try drawing something with that time limit.
Reward yourself after each session of drawing. 53 Include art in your daily routine so that it’s easy to do what you love.
Unfortunately, many people start to lose motivation to draw as they get older. When we get tired of our job, it is natural to want to stop drawing. Most of the time, we tend to delay. It is an act of putting things off until the last minute. It is hard to identify how many people delay because it can vary from person to person. The reasons for delay are not always clear, but it is a very common problem that artists and non-artists alike experience. 54
There are ways for artists to avoid such delay and keep drawing as a way of communication and self-expression. 55 They can also try new ways of drawing or try drawing on different surfaces like on paper or cardboard.

    A. Motivation is necessary when it comes to art.
    B. One such way is by keeping a journal of their drawings.
    C. For example, buy something small like a new pen or pencil.
    D. We lose motivation to begin a task because it’s just too difficult.
    E. You might feel guilty after you’ve put something off for too long.
    F. The more you draw, the more comfortable you are with carrying out the drawing process.
    G. Originally, it was associated with painters who would always put off painting until too late.

    应用文写作
    Possible version
I feel it a great honor to be granted the opportunity to stand on the stage and am pleased to share with you my personal view on the popular topic, The application of technology in daily life.
As we can see, our daily life currently is witnessing the application of technology in varieties of aspects. With a highly-developed internet system, the dream of convenient communication has been realized, allowing us to stay in touch with friends face to face anytime. Additionally, compared to the traditional way of paying in cash, mobile payment supported by apps like WeChat relieves us of the trouble of taking a wallet or a card.
Therefore, I can’t help feeling more fortunate living in such an era so as to enjoy a more comfortable life than any periods in history. In the meanwhile, we can also anticipate a promising future with the efforts of every one of us.
