William Dunn is the founder of Take a Kid Fishing, Inc, a nonprofit organization in Lakeland, Florida, which teaches poor and fatherless kids through the sport of fishing.
A dozen years ago, inspired by his six-year-old fatherless neighbor, Cam ran, who got angry and shouted at his mom, William asked Cam ran’s mom for permission to take Cam ran fishing. Cam ran was “hooked” from that first trip. The two fished together several times a week, and William saw positive changes in Cam ran’s behavior. “That’s when I realized that I had the duty to help fatherless kids,” he says.
On weekends, William and a few other volunteers take 20 to 25 kids out fishing on a rental boat, which was supported by the captain of the Double Eagle. Many have never been fishing or even on a boat, so William—or Big Will, as the kids call him — starts by teaching the basics. Then come the life lessons that fishing offers: patience, teamwork and the simple joy of relaxing in the outdoors. Take a Kid Fishing, Inc. has taken more than 600 fishing trips with almost 2,000 kids who don’t have a father in their lives.
He wants to share his love of fishing with kids who don’t have a father to take them. “I just want to show them that I care about them, that I’m there for them,” he says. Because many kids go on multiple trips, William is able to build relationships with them. He and Cam ran, now 20, still regularly fish together, and Camran sees Big Will as a father figure.
Take a Kid Fishing, Inc., has a huge impact, but it started because William wanted to help one kid. Do you know a child who might benefit from your friendship? Introduce them to fishing or another hobby you enjoy. You can make a great difference to their life.
4. What inspired William Dunn to found Take a Kid Fishing, Inc.?
A. Kids’ passion for fishing. B. Positive changes of a fatherless neighbor.
C. Unfortunate experiences of fatherless kids. D. Behavior of other volunteers to help fatherless kids.
5. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Many kids expected fishing experiences. B. Few kids participated in the fishing trips.
C. The organization taught more than basic skills. D. The fishing boat was offered by other volunteers.
6. We do we know about William Dunn from the text?
A. He is an experienced captain. B. He thinks company matters in kids’ lives.
C. He had an unhappy childhood as a fatherless kid. D. He wanted to raise money for the fatherless kids.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

Inspired by sea cucumbers, engineers have designed tiny robots that rapidly shift between liquid and solid states. On top of being able to shape-shift, the robots are magnetic and can conduct electricity. The researchers put the robots through an obstacle course of mobility and shape-changing tests in a study.
Where traditional robots are hard-bodied and stiff, “soft” robots have the opposite problem; they are flexible but weak, and their movements are difficult to control. “Giving robots the ability to switch between liquid and solid states equips them with more functionality,” says Chengfeng Pan, an engineer at The Chinese University of Hong Kong who led the study.
The team created the new shape-shifting material by putting magnetic particles (磁性粒子) in a metal. Researchers tested the material’s mobility and strength in a variety of contexts. With the aid of a magnetic field, the robots jumped over gaps, climbed walls, and even split in half to cooperatively move other l objects around before combining itself together.
“Now, we’re pushing this material system in more practical ways to solve some very specific medical and engineering problems,” says Pan, On the biomedical side, the team used the robots to remove a foreign object from a model stomach and to deliver drugs on-demand into the same stomach.
“Future work should further explore how these robots could be used within a biomedical context,” says Pan. “What we’re showing are just one-off demonstrations, proofs of concept, but much more study will be required to find how this could actually be used for drug delivery or for removing foreign objects.”
8. What is the advantage of the new robot?
A. It is easy to control. B. It is more intelligent.
C It changes states flexibly. D. It adapts to surroundings quickly.
9. What makes the movement of the robot possible?
A. The strength of the metal. B. The variety of the contexts.
C. The liquid state of the material. D. The presence of the magnetic field.
10. What is the purpose of Paragraph 4?
A. To explain the theory, of the system.
B. To find solutions to technical problems.
C. To show the application of the new robot.
D. To illustrate improvement in biomedical field.
11. What might Chengfeng Pan agree?
A. Further study on the robot is needed.
B. The concept of the robot needs to be proven.
C. Drug delivery can be strengthened by robots.
D. The medical world will be greatly changed.

Reaching out to support a person when they’re under stress is always a good idea. In fact, a new study suggests that support could be especially important for someone whose genetic quality makes them more likely to develop depression. The study shows the importance of social support to buffer the risk r of developing depression symptoms in general.
The study uses data from two very different groups of people under stress: new doctors in the most intense year of training, and older adults whose beloved ones recently died. The finding shows greatest impact of social support in those with highest risk scores for depression.
Compared to other groups of individuals in the study who had low depression risk scores, the doctors and widows with higher risk scores had higher rates of depression after they lost social support, but also had lower rates of depression when they gained social support during stressful times.
Sen, who is the director of the Eisenberg Family Depression Center adds that even as genetic research reveals more of the DNA variation(变异) related to depression vulnerability, learning how that variation leads to depression is crucial. “Further understanding the different genetic maps associated with sensitivity to loss of social support, lack of sleep, excessive work stress and other risk factors could help us develop personalized guidance for depression prevention,” he said. “In the meantime, these findings reaffirm how important social connections, social support and individual sensitivity to the social environment areas factors in well-being and preventing depression.”
Besides, the data used in the study is based on people of European origin, which limits the ability to generalize the findings to people of other backgrounds. Sen noted that additional work is being done to collect scores based on depression-related genetic characteristics in other populations including people of East Asian and African blood.
12. What does the new study find?
A. Depression can be passed on among generations.
B. One is genetic quality is related to depression.
C. Social support can reduce genetic depression risk.
D. People without support tend.to feel depressed.
13. How do the researchers carry out the study?
A. By collecting data. B. By giving examples.
C. By studying papers. D. By doing experiments.
14. What does the underlined word “vulnerability” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Tendency. B. Weakness. C. Awareness. D. Reduction.
15. What can we learn from the text?
A. Depression will lead to DNA variation.
B. Genetic maps can guide us to well-being.
C. Further data are to be collected for the study.
D. Individual sensitivity is a great depression risk.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My wife, Hannah, and I don’t usually keep house plants. Anything in pots gets either over watered or underwatered. But after I was diagnosed (诊断) with a brain cancer, with an expectation of no more than a year to live, I loved the idea of having something new and green around.
My friend Mitch gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green pottery bowl with three pencil-sizes talks (茎) bound together. We placed the plant in the living room window across from the couch where 1 spent much of the day. I smiled when I looked at it over the coffee Hanna b brought me each morning.
It old Hannah I wanted to care for the plant myself. When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or brown or lose all its leaves, I was pleasantly surprised. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless. Brain cancer limited my ability to walk, and the treatment left me exhausted, making it hard for me to accomplish everyday tasks.
As a family physician I was used to being the one who provided care, not the one who received it. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed that I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity and taught me I could still be a caregiver.
Plants and people could still depend on me. Over the next few months, I recovered from surgery and completed radiation. Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height and its leaves were shiny and thick. Both the tree and I were thriving. But hen, somehow, it began to show signs of stress. No matter what I did, the leaves kept browning and hanging down to the floor.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

As my anxiety reduced, I began to search online to help my failing plant.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
“If my lucky bamboo dies, I might die too!” I yelled. Living with the green and growing plant had offered me comfort. Now that the tree was struggling, I felt increasingly fearful. I grew more and more frustrated and uneasy. Hearing my words, Hannah softly reminded me of the wrong connection between the plant with my own survival. With the help of her patience, I realized I had wrongly connected my care of the plant—something over which I had at least some control—with my own survival—something over which I had no control.
As my anxiety reduced, I began to search online to help my failing plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, loosing its roots to give it room to grow. When it was put in the sunny window, we both began to boom again. Whenever I look at the tree with its stalks in its new pot, I think of Mitch and the other people who have cared for and supported me. If the plant outlives me, I hope it will comfort Hannah and remind her that our large community will continue to support her after I am gone.
