A crowd cheered Kunle Adeyanju as he turned off his motorbike engine after completing a tiring 41-day trip. The 44-year-old left London on April 19 and arrived in Nigeria’s commercial center Lagos on Sunday after travelling more than 8,000 miles across 13 countries. He started the impressive journey to raise funds for Rotary International to deal with polio (小儿麻痹症) in his native Nigeria.
Accompanied by a dozen bikers for the last stretch of the journey from the Republic of Benin, Adeyanju was welcomed by supporters in Ikeja, in central Lagos. Adeyanju, called “Lion Heart” by fans, won popularity among the public by posting daily pictures with comments about his journey on social media. At every stop along the way, he was greeted by enthusiastic (热情的) supporters.
He did face some challenges, like the one in Mali where one of his wheels broke. “I was standing in the middle of the night, alone in a bush, not knowing what to do, without speaking the language,” he said, explaining he had to walk to the nearest village. “Fortunately, the locals helped me.” Not all of the challenges he faced were solved smoothly. “Mauritania, a country in northwest Africa, was ‘terrible’,” he said, after he got robbed of hundreds of euros. “The worst experience,” he added.
The former Shell employee self-funded his trip with $20,400 in savings, hoping to raise up to $48 million for Rotary International. “I have been suffering from a lack of sleep lately because I slept only three to four hours per night. But I feel proud because I finished this challenge,” Adeyanju said just after he arrived, wiping the sweat off his face. Adeyanju added that he is now planning to have a possible cycling trip to Ghana or a bike ride to Israel to help raise more funds. And he has another dream: to climb Mount Qomolangma.

Fashion designers are always looking for new materials to work with. Lately, it’s all about environment-friendly materials -- recycled tires, mushrooms, even pineapple fibers! What if you want such a pair of shoes? Thaely is here to help.
This sneaker brand out of Dubai wants to fight the growing problem of plastic pollution. Led by 23-year-old Indian businessman Ashay Bhave, they may have found a winning approach: making shoes out of plastic grocery bags. “Thaely” means “plastic bag” in the Hindi language.
“I was looking to create footwear that is cost-effective and safe for the environment,” Bhave said in an interview with a newspaper. “I needed to come up with something that uses recycled plastic without creating any more plastic waste. ”Plastic bags were the perfect solution. He said five trillion plastic bags are used around the world each year. “I was motivated to find a solution to this problem,” Bhave said.
That solution was the fiber called ThaelyTex. Made entirely from plastic bags, the material looks and feels like leather. That sounds promising. Better yet, the production process requires no additional chemicals and produces no poisonous by-products. The result is a smart-looking pair of white low-top sneakers.
Bhave wouldn’t expose the full process for making ThaelyTex, but he said that each pair of shoes was made from up to 15 plastic bags and 22 plastic bottles. Where do they get the materials? Bhave told Elle that was the hardest part. “The biggest challenge we faced was right at the first step of acquiring the plastic bags. ”
Finally, they got help from TrioTap Technologies, a waste management plant. Bhave said they offered to collect the bags and also process them into ThaelyTex.
So far, it seems like things are falling into place. There are already hundreds of pre-orders in place. It sounds like they have some plans for the future. “We have a few more colors coming up,” said Bhave. They also plan to put out a high-top model and bring in a line of clothing. Let’s hope their growth is also friendly to the environment.
28. Why did Bhave choose to make shoes out of plastic bags?
A. To set a new footwear trend.
B. To test new materials for footwear.
C. To reduce the use of plastic bags in his home country.
D. To use recycled plastic in an environment-friendly way.
29. What was the most difficult task for Bhave?
A. Having a few more colors for Thaely.
B. Processing plastic bags into ThaelyTex.
C. Collecting enough production materials
D. Dealing with many poisonous by-products
30. The underlined part“put out”in the last paragraph probably means__________.
A. produce B. conserve C. provide D. broadcast
31. What can be the best title for this passage?
A. Bhave: a promising young man
B. Thaely: killer of waste plastic bags
C. ThaelyTex: material out of garbage
D. TrioTap Technologies: a waste management plant
D
As you may have noticed, machine learning and artificial intelligence are two of the hottest areas in technology today. One company that seems to have been caught flat-footed in the artificial intelligence race is Apple. To successfully participate in new markets, Apple is seeking ways to combine its strategy in Siri and artificial intelligence.
Apple’s voice assistant Siri significantly falls behind competing smart speakers from Amazon and Google. Take HomePod, Apple’s smart-speaker product for example, though reviews praised the device for having excellent sound quality, Siri’s poor accuracy could limit its usefulness. Besides, the high price ofthe device also made it a harder sell than it would have been. Apple charges for the HomePod $350 while the competing Echo Plus, for example, costs $150.
If Apple wants to successfully participate in new markets, and keep its core iPhone and iPad products competitive well into the future, it needs to go from zero to hero in artificial intelligence. The company recently hired John Giannandrea, who previously led Google’s artificial intelligence efforts. And the company gave him more power, which seemed to suggest that Apple is really trying to rework its entire strategy in this field. Under this new specialist in artificial intelligence, some positive changes will take place in Apple’s artificial intelligence development.
However, let’s be realistic. A management change isn’t going to affect Apple’s products and technologies that we have seen for some time. Developing good software is a long process, especially considering the possibility that Apple will effectively throw out the current generation of Siri and start from beginning.
Nevertheless, one reason that I’m hopeful is that Apple seems to understand that it has a problem here and is making efforts to change the situation. If Apple is successful in reshaping its artificial intelligence efforts and continues to fund them appropriately, then there’s a reasonable chance that within a few years, it won’t be a laggard(落后者) in this field but a leader.
32. Why is Apple’s HomePod mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To advertise Apple’s new product.
B. To speak highly of its sound quality.
C. To exclude different smart-speakers.
D. To show the disadvantages of Apple’s AI products.
33. Apple is trying to rework its entire strategy in AI by ______.
A. reshaping its leadership
B. setting up a special fund
C. inventing new smart products
D. stopping using Siri in HomePod
34. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Apple will be greatly reconstructed.
B. Apple will update its core products.
C. Apple’s situation won’t get better overnight.
D. Apple’s products won’t be competitive.
35. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The future of Apple’s core products
B. The decline of Apple’s voice assistant Siri
C. Machine learning and artificial intelligence
D. The efforts Apple made to have a place in AI field

Science can help you improve your study methods. For more than 100 years, psychologists have done research on which study habits work best. ____36____ . Here are 4 tips to improve your study habits.
Space out your studying
Nate Kornell,a psychologist at Williams College, thinks it’s a good idea to study the day before a big test. ____37____. Instead, space out those study sessions. Kornell compares our memory to water in a bucket that has a small leak. Try to refill the bucket while it's still full, and you can't add much more water. Allow time between study sessions, and some of the material may drip out of your memory. But then you’ll be able to relearn it and learn more in your next study session.
Practice,practice,practice!
Musicians practice their instruments. Athletes practice sports skills. ____38____. “If you want to be able to remember information, the best thing you can do is practice,” says Katherine Rawson. She’s a psychologist at Kent State University in Ohio. In one 2013 study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored more than a full letter grade better,on average, than students who studied the way they normally had.
Test yourself
Nebel’s preferred study habit is one of the best way. Before big tests,Nebel’s mom quizzed her on the material. “Now I know that was retrieval(检索)practice,” she says. As Nebel got older, she quizzed herself. “____39____,” Nebel suggests. “Put questions on one side and the answers on the other side and try to quiz yourself the way the teacher asks questions,”she adds.
Dig deeper
It's hard to remember a string of facts and figures if you don’t push further. Ask why things are a certain way. How did they come about? Why do they matter?Psychologists call this elaboration. It’s taking class material and asking a lot of how and why questions about it. This helps you combine new information with other things you know. And it creates a bigger network in your brain of things that relate to one another, she says. ____40____.
A. The same should go for learning
B. Some tips help for almost every subject
C. Of course, nothing can replace studying with your mother
D. Some experts hold that studying late at night can be really useful
E. That larger network makes it easier to learn and remember things
F. Create a pack of flash cards every time you learn new information
G. But research shows it's a bad idea to force all your studying into that day

Lungs nearly burst. I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached the end of the pool.
Earlier that month, I had handed in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide(滑梯). I was capable of more. One day the manager suggested “This looks really easy for you. Why aren’t you applying to become a lifeguard? ”
“Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $ 2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is to complete a certification class.”
Thanks to him, his words inspired me — You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.
Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land-based and water-based emergencies.
My new work as a lifeguard started soon. A well-intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary and useless.
Today appeared to be another uneventful and peaceful day. However, shortly after the other lifeguards signaled to the children to leave and exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.

18. Which pet may an outgoing person prefer?
A. A dog. B. A cat. C. A bird.
19. What may a cat owner be like?
A. Sociable. B. Careful. C. Clever.
20. What does the speech mainly talk about?
A. More outgoing dog people. B. Less sociable cat people. C. Pet people’s personalities.
A 19. C 20. C
原文】M: Are you a dog person or a cat person? What psychological factors make a person choose one type of pet over the other?
An outgoing person prefers dogs. This should really come as no surprise. Owning a dog is a social experience, because you always have to walk them and interact with other dog owners. If you really like talking to other people, a dog might be for you. Cats on the other hand tend to stay at home, which means that taking care of a cat requires much less social interaction.
Cat people are smarter. While studies show that dog lovers are more outgoing and lively, cat lovers score higher on intelligence tests, and are said to be more open-minded. They are also more curious about the world, even though they might not leave the house to see it as much!
Do you love a dog or a cat? Are you a different kind of pet person like a turtle person or a bird person? Does your personality match with some features we talked about earlier? I hope my speech will be helpful to you. Thank you for listening!

A篇
21. A 22. D 23. C
由Marble Caves中的“The best time to visit: during sunrise and sunset, when the sun’s rays light up the cave walls, making it an experience to remember.”
由Fingal’s Cave中的“The cave’s size, shape, and naturally—arched(拱形的)roof combine with the waves to create strange sounds that enhance its cathedral—like atmosphere.”
由The Blue Grotto中的“This cave is unique for its brilliant blue light which comes from two sources: the entrance to the cave and a bigger hole beneath the entrance.”

根据第二段中的“Adeyanju ... won popularity among the public by posting daily pictures with comments about his journey on social media”可知,Adeyanju每天都在社交媒体上发布旅行照片和评论,从而赢得了公众的喜爱。故选C。

故选A。

根据第二段的句子“This sneaker brand out of Dubai wants to fight the growing problem of plastic pollution.(这个来自迪拜的运动鞋品牌想要对抗日益严重的塑料污染问题)”和第三段的句子“I needed to come up with something that uses recycled plastic without creating any more plastic waste.(我需要想出一种既使用回收塑料又不会产生更多塑料垃圾的方法)”可知,Bhave选择用塑料制作鞋子,是因为他想用环保的方式使用回收塑料。
根据第五段最后一句话“The biggest challenge we faced was right at the first step of acquiring the plastic bags.(我们面临的最大的挑战就是如何获得塑料袋)”可知,对于Bhave来说,最大的困难是获得足够的塑料袋来作为生产材料。
前文“We have a few more colors coming up,” said Bhave.(“我们会有更多的颜色出现,”巴维说)”可知,他们会生产更多颜色的鞋子,结合划线句“They also plan to put out a high-top model and bring in a line of clothing.(他们还计划put up一个高帮样式,并推出一系列服装)”和句中的“a high-top model(高帮样式)”可知,put out是在该句子中是“生产”的意思,意思是说他们还计划生产一种高帮鞋。故选A项。
根据第一段的“Lately, it’s all about environment-friendly materials -- recycled tires, mushrooms, even pineapple fibers! What if you want such a pair of shoes?

Besides, the high price of the device also made it a harder sell than it would have been. Apple charges for the HomePod $350 while the competing Echo Plus, for example, costs $150.(虽然评论称赞这款设备具有出色的音质,但Siri的低准确性可能会限制它的用途。
根据题目定位到第三段第二句“The company recently hired John Giannandrea, who previously led Google's artificial intelligence efforts. And the company gave him more power, which seemed to suggest that Apple is really trying to rework its entire strategy in this field. (该公司最近聘请了John Giannandrea,他曾领导谷歌的人工智能工作。公司给了他更多的权力,这似乎表明苹果真的在试图重新制定其在这个领域的整体战略。) ”可知,苹果公司正在通过重组领导层的方式来试图重新制定其在人工智能领域的整体战略。故选A。
根据第四段中作者分析“However, let's be realistic. A management change isn't going to affect Apple's products and technologies that we have seen for some time. Developing good software is a long process... (然而,让我们现实一点。管理层变动不会影响我们长期见到的苹果产品和技术。开发好的软件是一个漫长的过程……) ”可推知,作者认为苹果的情况不会在一夜之间转变。故选C。
【35题详解】主旨大意题。根据第一段“ One company that seems to have been caught flat-footed in the artificial intelligence race is Apple. To successfully participate in new markets, Apple is seeking ways to combine its strategy in Siri and artificial intelligence. (苹果公司似乎在人工智能竞争中措手不及。为了成功进入新市场,苹果正在寻求将Siri的策略与人工智能相结合的方法。) ”以及最后一段 “However, one reason that I’m hopeful is that Apple seems to understand that it has a problem here and is making efforts to change the situation. (然而,我抱有希望的一个原因是,苹果似乎明白自己在这方面存在问题,并正在努力改变这种局面。) ”可知,文章主要讲述苹果为在人工智能领域占有一席之地所做的努力,故选D。

【37题详解】根据空格前一句“Nate Kornell,a psychologist at Williams College, thinks it's a good idea to study the day before a big test.”(威廉姆斯学院的心理学家内特·科内尔认为,在大考前一天学习是个好主意。)

【39题详解】根据上文“Before big tests,Nebel's mom quizzed her on the material. “Now I know that was retrieval(检索)practice,”she says. As Nebel got older, she quizzed herself. ”段落介绍了Nebel最初是考试前妈妈给她进行检索式复习。随着年龄增长,她自己采取这种方法复习。此句是引用Nebel说的话,她举例介绍检索式复习的一种方式。F选项(每次学习新信息时,创建一组闪存卡)符合要求。故选F。
【40题详解】根据前一句“And it creates a bigger network in your brain of things that relate to one another, she says.”(她说:“它在你的大脑中建立了一个更大的网络,把相互关联的事物联系起来。”。) 中的that larger network的指代就非常明显,指代前一句中的a bigger network。

Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m writing to talk about the problem of food safety nowadays. To reduce costs and make more profits, some food companies don’t take necessary safety measures to guarantee the food quality. As a result, more and more low-quality food flows into the market, doing great harm to consumers’ health.
In my opinion, food is essential to human beings. We could not live without safe food. If no notice is taken of food safety, the health of the whole nation will suffer. So I call on the whole society to take action and put an end to the low-quality food. Only in this way can we live a healthier life.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
