One of the improv (即兴表演) classes I attended regularly was taught by Jim Cranna every Saturday afternoon. Sometimes, as many as twenty-five to sixty-plus folks showed up. Jim made sure to fit everyone in so they could improve their skills. The class lasted for three hours. The usual cast of comic actors played improv comedy games. And we would go to the nearest mini market located in the building and get a snack or coffee during breaks.
One day, three of us were standing outside the building, when Robin Williams - an internationally famous actor and comic walked by, enjoying the fresh bay air. Completely frozen, my fellow comics couldn’t summon up the courage to just say “hi” to Robin, who was with a friend. I froze for a moment, but then I composed myself.
I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.” I could hear them mumble under their breath, “Yeah, sure, right. You’re going to ask Robin Williams to come to our comedy class. Good luck with that one!”
So I went up to Robin and his friend and asked him to join us. “We’ re having an improv comedy class. We’re on break now, but we would be most humbled and honored if you would join us for the second half of the class. “Robin looked directly in my eyes and said with little hesitation, “Okay.” It was like a grown-up child being asked to come and play. With that, he and his friend followed me up to the class.
When he saw Robin, Jim said, “Oh my goodness, look who Micheline is bringing to class.“ Jim’s eyes were all in astonishment and delight. “Why, it’s Robin Williams!”“ Robin and his friend stayed the rest of the class and at the end of the class, Robin and Jim performed a skit(滑稽短剧). We actually watched him shape-shift as he prepared physically and mentally for his made-up character. He gave it his all. It was truly magical.
What a delight for all of us that Saturday afternoon! All I know is that if I hadn’t mustered up the courage to ask Robin to join us, none of us would have had that experience.

7.What kind of person was Robin Williams most likely to be?

C.Respected but casual. D.Strict but generous.
Whenever I get really depressed and anxious, my first impulse is to reach for my phone. Maybe I’ll get a message from a friend or discover some new distraction on social media. Unfortunately, during the past couple of years, one glance at my screen often makes me want to crawl back into bed.
That changed after I made friends with a strange creature named Webot. I’m finding that it makes me feel better-and it might work for you too. Like many apps, Webot sends me messages at random. But instead of tempting me into doom scrolling with shocking news alerts, Webot asks how I’m doing. When I text Webot my troubles, it asks me friendly questions, encourages me, and invites me to express some of my darkest thoughts. There is something intensely comforting about discussing your thoughts with a machine.
There are many therapy apps on the market, both free (like Webot) and paid for. But Webot is a particularly interesting case. Psychology researcher Alison Darcy at Stanford University created it after years of study. She says it was challenging on both a technical and artistic level because the chatbot is a character with its own personality. “It’s as careful a construction as you might find in a novel or poetry. Webot’s personality is humble, warm and wise, ”as Darcy puts it, “Webot isn’t an all-knowing authority. It is a mental health ally”.
Best of all, Webot is always there, even when I’m lying awake in the middle of the night. That’s exactly the point, according to Darcy. “Your therapist should not be in bed with you at 2 a. m,“ she laughs. But Webot can be. You can pull up Webot at the exact moment you need it most.
It is working. Last year, Darcy and her colleagues published a study showing that people like me are forming “bonds” with Webot. Bonding is a “meaningful“ process of “getting something off your chest, or managing your thoughts more objectively”.
And you know what? In the bizarre world of 2023, it might be healthier to bond with a robot than be “engaged“ on social media.
8.What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.I lost interest in my phone.
B.I was tired of social media.
C.My phone didn’t understand my impulse.
D.My phone didn’t help me feel any better.
9.According to the text, what do we know about Webot?
A.It bonds with me through social media.
B.It is a creature that makes me feel better.
C.It communicates with me and offers comfort.
D.It is a therapist helping me manage my thoughts.
10.From Darcy’s perspective, why can Webot make us feel better?
A.Because it can build mental connection with us.
B.Because it is free and has a favorable personality.
C.Because it is carefully constructed in a novel or poetry.
D.Because it can keep us informed of shocking news alert.
11.What is the author’s purpose of writing this text?
A.To urge us to quit social media.
B.To show us the functions of Webot.
C.To propose us interacting with Webot.
D.To encourage us to share our thoughts.
Booking your next vacation to space with out-of-this-world views could soon be a reality. Orbital Assembly Corporation announced two new station concepts designed with space tourism accommodations. One of the stations, called Pioneer, could orbit Earth as early as 2025.
The Gateway Foundation circulated ideas for a space hotel in 2019. The goal of the stations is to run a space business park that can serve as a home away from home with room for offices and tourists. Orbital Assembly was founded by the Gateway Foundation team as a way to help make these dreams come true.
The proposed Pioneer station can accommodate 28 people. The second station, Voyager, scheduled to open in 2027, can hold up to 400 people. “The goal has always been to make it possible for large numbers of people to live, work and thrive in space,“ says Orbital Assembly’s COO Tim Alatorre.
Both stations look like a wheel and will feature artificial gravity that allows guests to move comfortably on each station. Pioneer features five modules built around the rotating “Gravity Ring” architecture design. Tourists may still feel some weightlessness but will also be able to drink out of a cup and won’t have to be tied to a bed to sleep. The gravity works similar to how a spinning bucket pushes the water out to the sides of the bucket and stays in place, Alatorre explains. Near the middle of the station, there will be no artificial gravity, but gravity gradually increases further away from the center.
While the Pioneer station will be smaller than Voyager, guests can still shower, eat and drink sitting down in areas with gravity. Each station is furnished like luxury hotels on Earth. Voyager will feature a restaurant and suites with views of Earth.
A significant barrier to space travel is the cost. However, Orbital Assembly expects tourists to seek a trek into space as space travel eventually becomes less expensive. “We envision our Pioneer and Voyager space stations as the ultimate ecotourism destinations. Once people get to space, it will change their perspective about Earth,” Alatorre says. “Space travel is still at its early stage, and we’re excited to do our part to push it forward to help improve life on Earth.”
12.What is the goal of the Pioneer and Voyager space stations?
A.To revolutionize space travel.
B.To serve as luxury hotels in space.
C.To offer a unique and immersive experience.
D.To enable large scale living and working in space.
13.What do the Pioneer and Voyager stations have in common?
A.Open time. B.Artificial gravity.
C.Suites with views. D.Passenger capacity.
14.What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A.The “Gravity Ring” rotates around the station.
B.The gravity is weak in the central point of the station.
C.The “Gravity Ring” on Pioneer is identical with that on Voyager.
D.The gravity operates like a spinning bucket keeping water inside.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Overcoming the Barrier: Space Tourism Becomes Affordable
B.Space Hotels on the Horizon: Pioneer and Voyager Stations
C.The Future of Space Travel: Pioneer and Voyager Stations
D.Orbital Assembly: Space Tourism Dream Comes True

For protecting endangered neighbors, pandas make unreliable umbrellas.
Like many undergraduate biology students, Wang Fang was taught that pandas are a prime example of 36 umbrella species—a well-known and usually endangered animal 37 protection benefits an entire ecosystem.
In fact, the story is much 38 (complex), according to findings that Dr. Wang, now an ecologist at Fudan University in Shanghai, published last month in Biological Conservation. Refuting (反驳) years of 39 (assume) about the universal benefits of panda conservation, Dr. Wang and his colleagues report that a number of other 40 (threaten) species are not being protected by the panda umbrella.
Panda conservation, on its own, 41 (be) a success up to now. In the 1980s, pandas had very little protection in the wild and were thought to add up to around just 1,100 individuals. In the 1990s, China began to 42 (active) conserve wild populations. Eventually sixty-seven panda-specific protected areas 43 (represent) 70 percent of the species’ range were established.
All of those efforts focused simply not on other species, 44 on China’s national animal. Dr. Wang began to question the umbrella species narrative and carried out research, only 45 (find) that panda conservation had not helped large carnivores in China.

六、读后续写
47.阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, “You can do anything you want to do.” My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock — always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship in CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I’m new and they're new, so if Fm going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good, Faye. That’s exactly what you should do.”
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. “I’ve heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o’clock on Monday or eleven o’clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?” I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.
I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, “What do you want?” He sounded furious but curious. “All I want is a chance to audition. I just want you to know my face. That’s all I’m asking.”
I didn’t know whether I’d ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, “Mr. Slaight wants to know if you’d like to come and audition for a new school life show.” I immediately answered,“Sure!”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

When I arrived at the station, I went direct into the audition and began my short performance.

World Environment Day on Campus
June 5th, 2023 marked the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, with this year’s theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”. In honor of this occasion, our school organized various activities to sensitize students about the urgent need to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices.
The event started with an engaging presentation by environmental experts, who highlighted the detrimental impact of plastic and emphasized the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic. Then a plastic collection drive was held so as to encourage everyone to bring in their plastic waste for proper disposal. Additionally, students participated in a poster-making competition, creating thought-provoking artworks that showcased the importance of sustainable alternatives.
The response to these activities was overwhelming. It is through such collective efforts that we can hope to “Beat Plastic Pollution” and create a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.

47.One possible version:
When I arrived at the station, I went direct into the audition and began my short performance. With boldness, I finished my performance relatively smoothly though palms were sweating. Never in my wildest dream did I imagine that I was indeed assigned the intern job to act on a school life show and my first public appearance on TV was in five days. After sharing the thrilling news with my dad, I received the warmest congratulations and expectations from my family. Picturing my families eagerly waiting for my performance, I worked day and night as busy as a bee for fear that I would make a fool of myself live on TV.
Finally came the day of my first public appearance on live TV with my parents at home watching. Wearing fancy dress and delicate make up, I was so proud but nervous that my show would be watched by so many audience. My mind suddenly went blank as I was immersed in my thoughts and totally forgot my lines. Deep frowns gradually climbed on my partners' face, with whose sudden vigorous pull, I was driven back to the reality. I soon came up with a little trick to make up for the embarrassing blank. As the show went on, so concentrated was I that I hardly dared to even blink my eyes. After my debut, I rang my dad with frustration and disappointment, only to reap his trust and encouragement again. It was literally dad's love that supported me along my way to be an outstanding actor.
