My name is Kenny, and my twin brother is Kevin. Kevin was born with autism (孤独症). When we began high school, I would see how rude the kids were being to Kevin and I knew it was just not right. One day, a student walked past my brother and shouted rudely at Kevin. I had to stand up for my brother.
I avoided physical conflict but I made sure that my point was made using my most powerful weapon—my voice. I said, “Look at him. We have the same heart. We live on the same earth. All because he has an intellectual disability, you treat him differently?”
Kevin and I needed to make a change in our school and community—a change towards respect and we knew sport was the perfect tool. Through our participation in United Sports where people with and without intellectual disabilities play together on the same team, Kevin and I found a way to change our school environment.
At first it was very challenging for us to work together because Kevin is not always very good at communication, but together we worked tirelessly on exercises during practice. All of our hard work was paid off during our first soccer battle. Everyone on the team was nervous about how it was going to go, but when my teammates and I stepped onto the soccer field, I noticed something that filled my heart with pure happiness. We were a team. We were friends. And all the students and volunteers were there to cheer on the team and our amazing players.
Kevin turned to me, broke out in tears and said, “I finally feel included.” Kevin had finally found a place to belong within our school community. Our team played like rock stars and Kevin had a great shot that helped to tie the game.
After that day, all of our lives changed. There was a new atmosphere in our school—one of respect and inclusion. All of my teammates walked around school with a sense of pride and courage.
24. What do the underlined words “my point” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. I planned to support my brother.
B. I intended to fight with the student by force.
C. I had the most powerful weapon of voice.
D. I considered it wrong to treat disabled kids rudely.
25. What was the challenge the author had in working with Kevin?
A. His few words. B. His lack of respect.
C. His tireless practice. D. His hesitation to play.
26. What did Kevin feel during the first soccer match?
A. He felt too nervous to kick the ball.
B. He had a sense of belonging at school.
C. He was proud of playing as a rock star.
D. He was happy to be cheered as the best player.
27. What happened at school after the first soccer match?
A. The author and Kevin had none to fear.
B. There was a new atmosphere to respect teachers.
C. Kids with intellectual disabilities were included.
D. United Sports became popular with students.

Did you know that swimming can provide you with the tools you need for achieving success later in life? The following life lessons aren’t things you can be taught in a classroom. They are drawn from the count-less hours we spend swimming in the clean water.
Having big goals is necessary to achieve success in the pool. Sometimes those big goals can be our worst enemy, however. You need to start with short-term goals. Sometimes taking baby steps can be too slow for some people, making them annoyed, but successful swimmers know that this slow progress provides an accumulated effect that has a huge impact in the mid and long term. Success in the pool—and life—is achieved step by step, mistake by mistake, small win by small win.
Swimming tests your mental limits. I cannot count how many times I watched the coach write a set of training plans on the board and felt myself holding back deep inside, mind racing, with thoughts of how badly I was going to die over the course of the set. But then what happened? I pulled it off. I started the set, and talked myself through it. “Hey, this isn’t so bad.” A little bit later, “Okay, halfway done.” And finally, “I am going to achieve the goal!”
The reality is you never know how tough you are until you are in the race, reaching that goal even though a few minutes earlier you were mentally shaking in your swimming suit. This carries really well into the other challenges you will face in your life. We always think we aren’t capable, that swimming or life finally beats us, but believe it or not, you will always be as strong as you need to be.
28. Why does the author think that sometimes big goals can be harmful?
A. Swimmers will feel annoyed at their slow progress.
B. Big goals need a long annoying term to achieve.
C. Small but necessary steps can be easily ignored.
D. More mistakes are needed to achieve bigger goals.
29. What was the author nervous about when seeing the set on the board?
A. Losing his life in the race. B. Failing to reach the goal.
C. Drinking the water in the pool. D. Finishing the race halfway.
30. What does the phrase “pulled it off” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Left the place. B. Took it off. C. Made it. D. Gave it up.
31. What Can be the best title for the text?
A. Confidence is what you need to reach your goal
B. Life lessons you will learn from swimming
C. Swimming can make you tough in life
D. Small goals add up to big success
D
I really enjoy autumn’s display of golden leaves, but as a bird lover in the UK, the real thrill at this time of year is the arrival of migratory birds(侯鸟) from Iceland, Siberia and Canada.
The UK is lucky—in winter, we get a wide variety of birds heading here to escape tough conditions further north. And in summer, we are visited by birds from Africa such as swallows and cuckoos(杜鹃) that make the most of our long, light days for having their young. While the long flights are undoubtedly impressive, there are some species that fly considerably further, spending much of their lives at the extreme ends of Earth.
The Arctic tern(北极燕鸥) has the world’s longest migration: a round-trip of 35,000 kilometers annually. Arctic terns break up their long journeys though, so if you are looking for, he world’s longest non-stop flyer, that record is held by the bar-tailed godwit(斑尾塍鹬).
So why do birds migrate? It makes sense to head somewhere warmer for winter, but it can be harder to explain why some African species then return to Europe for summer when food is still plentiful in their wintering grounds. It could be because there is less competition here, or because our longer, cooler days are useful. Some trips are even harder to explain. For example, the ancient murrelet(海雀) flies almost 8,000 kilometers from Canada to China , despite very similar conditions.
Although there is still much we don’t know, we do know that our changing climate is making birds lose the benefits of such long journeys. Arctic terns survive on sand eels(沙鳗) when they arrive in the Shetland Islands. In 2004, the UK saw a sudden drop in sand eels due to climate change. The islands usually host more than 20,000 pairs of Arctic terns, but didn’t see a single chick survive to adulthood that summer. I have so much admiration for the world’s furthest fliers, and I just hope they can cling on and that we can come to fully understand them.
32. Why do some birds travel to the UK from Africa in summer?
A. To search for more food. B. To escape the heat in Africa.
C. To enjoy the warmth in the UK. D. To take advantage of the longer days.
33. Which bird flies the longest non-stop in the world?
A. The Arctic tern. B. The swallow.
C. The bar-tailed godwit. D. The ancient murrelet.
34. What does the author think of the ancient murrelet’s trip from Canada to China?
A. Puzzling. B. Relaxing. C. Impressive. D. Unnecessary.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The author’s admiration and pity for Arctic terns.
B. The impact of climate change on migratory birds.
C. What people should do to protect migratory birds.
D. How Arctic terns find food during their migration.

第二节(满分25分)

My Amazing Mom
I lived about an hour away from my mom’s, but I visited my mother often, especially when she turned ninety. Even though my brother and I had felt it was time for Mom to move in with one of us, she wouldn’t hear of it.
I remember one of my visits as if it were yesterday. Mom was ninety-six years old, and she had insisted on baking cookies for her great-grandsons’ birthday party. I had offered to make them for her, but she dismissed the thought. She wanted to contribute to the birthday party’s menu, just like she always had.
Mom had decided to bake cookies the following morning. I had suggested she wait until I arrived the next day, but she said she would be fine. So when I went grocery shopping, I made sure my mom had all the basic ingredients(食材) she needed for the morning. I placed them on the kitchen counter. And since it had been a handful of months since Mom had made her cookies, I decided to write the recipe out again. The original was pretty worn, and I wasn’t sure she would still remember all the ingredients and measurements. Before I left for home, I set the oven temperature to 350 degrees. All she had to do was turn it on in the morning.
When I arrived the next morning, I found her cookies were cooling in rows on the shelves. She had accomplished quite a lot that morning, and it was only nine o’ clock. However, Mom wasn’t happy. She told me the cookies tasted awful.
I blamed myself for not insisting that we bake them together. The disappointment on her face made it quite clear that Mom felt defeated, as if she had lost her purpose at the age of ninety-six, I looked at the cookies. They did appear flatter than usual and tasted awful. I assumed she had probably left out some ingredients. Maybe she didn’t read the recipe correctly.
注意:1,续写词数应为l50左右;2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
But I checked my recipe and it turned out to be all my fault.
That afternoon, she immediately decided to bake fresh cookies.
