Big snowstorms and cold air swept across the north of China in the first week of November. Many people want to know, “If the earth is getting warmer, how can winter still be so cold?” The answer lies in the difference between local weather and climate(气候).
Climate is how the atmosphere(大气层)acts over a very long time, while weather describes what’s happening in a much shorter time. Even on a day when it is colder than average(平均) in a place, the world as a whole is warmer than average. For example, parts of the United States were 1 to 9 degrees colder than average, but the world as a whole was about 0.9 degree warmer than the 1979—2000 average.
Climate scientists think that the world could be 1--2 degrees warmer by the end of the century. But they don’t think it means the end of winter. Record low temperatures will still happen, and they just become rarer over time. One 2009 study found that the United States saw as many record highs as record lows in the 1950s, but by the 2000 record highs happened more often than record lows.
Another reason for the cold weather is the warming Arctic(北极). It is warming almost three times as fast as any other place on earth. As the temperature increases, lots of cold Arctic air goes to the south.
So, will this winter be much colder? A report says it is highly possible. North China may see more snow than average while south China may get less rain than average.
- What’s the diference between climate and weather?
A. Climate has higher temperatures. B. Climate covers a longer time.
C. Climate covers more places. D. Climate has a greater power.
30. Which part of a newspaper is this passage probably from?

In China, it is common to see people playing a board game on a table, a chair or just on the ground. 51
Many overseas(海外的)Chinese play the game as a way of having fun and celebrating Chinese culture. Chinese chess is a two-player board game with a total of(总共)32 pieces in red and black. 52 It must remain in the palace(宫殿). If it gets checked(被“将死”), the game will be over. So the object of the game is to check the other’s King while protecting one’s own King.
53 Some believe that Chinese chess appeared during the Warring States Period(战国时期). Others believe that Emperor Shun(舜帝)invented the game to educate his younger brother Xiang. That might be why the game’s Chinese name is Xiangqi.
54 Many countries now have their own Xiangqi clubs. Many foreigners enjoy playing Chinese chess. In their eyes, Chinese chess can help them learn Chinese culture and communicate with Chinese people better.

One night when I was in the second grade, I saw something on the news. It was about a group of homeless people sleeping outside in the cold. They didn’t have a warm and comfortable place to stay. That really bothered(使......担心)me.
So I decided to start a club. The goal was to raise money to help the homeless. I called it the Rock Club as I decided to make beautiful paintings on the rocks and sell them. When I first started, we only had about five members. But that quickly grew to about twenty. It wasn’t hard to ask people to join the club, because people came up to ask me if they could join.
We spent all of our free time painting rocks. We painted animals, flowers and even the names of sports teams. We went around the school to search for teachers and hoped they could buy our rocks. By New Year’s Day we raised thirty-three dollars and then we decided to give the money to a local homeless shelter(收容所). We were happy that we could help the homeless by ourselves.
A few days later, our Rock Club’s story came out in the newspaper. We all felt proud that we did something and people began to give more attention to the needs of the homeless in our town. Our school decided to start a program just for kids to help the homeless shelter.
Something as simple as some rocks, some paintings made me realize that you’re never too young and that you don’t need much to make a big difference.
