My mom only had one eye. She cooked for students and teachers to feed the family when I was young. One day my mom came to say hello to me in primary school. I was so embarrassed that I threw her a hateful look and ran out.

Village doctors, dubbed “guardians of health”, have played an important role in treating hundreds of millions of farmers. Xu Qiusheng, 81, often looks out of the window of his clinic（诊所）when he is not with a patient（病人）, as he feels relief when looking up at an old camphor tree that stays green all year round.
Over half a century has passed since Xu graduated from medical school and started working as a village doctor in Yangfang village, in East China’s Jiangxi province.
“Three generations of my family, my parents, and my grandchildren all come to Uncle Xu for treatment,” says Chen Donggen, who took his feverish granddaughter to Xu’s clinic. After briefly inquiring（询问）about the little girl’s condition, Xu took out a very thin needle and gently inserted the needle into the skin of both her hands and head.
The kind of treatment is the most commonly used way to treat pain in traditional Chinese medicine. Xu has used the set of silver needles for decades to help villagers relieve discomfort.
Xu says that treatment and medicine are usually free for villagers facing financial difficulties. He allows them to pay later though living a frugal（节俭的）life himself.
Ahead of this Spring Festival, Xu together with his daughter, who returned to the village and followed in his footsteps, went door to door visiting the elderly. The health of more than 1,400 villagers in Yangfang has become the responsibility for rural doctors like Xu and his daughter.

Big snowstorms and cold air swept across the north of China in the first week of November. Many people want to know, “If the earth is getting warmer, how can winter still be so cold?” The answer lies in the difference between local weather and climate（气候）.
Climate is how the atmosphere（大气层）acts over a very long time, while weather describes what’s happening in a much shorter time. Even on a day when it is colder than average（平均） in a place, the world as a whole is warmer than average. For example, parts of the United States were 1 to 9 degrees colder than average, but the world as a whole was about 0.9 degree warmer than the 1979—2000 average.
Climate scientists think that the world could be 1--2 degrees warmer by the end of the century. But they don’t think it means the end of winter. Record low temperatures will still happen, and they just become rarer over time. We spent all of our free time painting rocks.We painted animals, flowers and even the names of sports teams. We went around the school to search for teachers and hoped they could buy our rocks. By New Year’s Day we raised thirty-three dollars and then we decided to give the money to a local homeless shelter（收容所）. We were happy that we could help the homeless by ourselves.
A few days later, our Rock Club’s story came out in the newspaper. We all felt proud that we did something and people began to give more attention to the needs of the homeless in our town. Our school decided to start a program just for kids to help the homeless shelter.
