    Your Health Questions
I have such a terrible time falling asleep every night that I’m always tired and it’s affecting my schoolwork. What should I do?
    —Mindy in Nevada
One in every five young people has a sleep problem, so you’re not alone. Getting enough sleep has become as important as eating vegetables and exercising regularly. It’s very important for your body.
Most young people only get seven hours of sleep each night, when they actually need nine hours. And making up for lost sleep during the week by sleeping in on weekends doesn’t really work. In fact, sleeping late on weekends may actually do you more harm than good if you have sleep problems.
What happens if you don’t get enough sleep? If your sleep problems continue for a few nights, you could suffer serious problems. Lack of sleep can affect learning and memory. Even worse, if your sleep difficulties last a long time, that could lead to anxiety or depression(抑郁).
Therefore, you’ve got to develop some healthy sleep habits. Below are some suggestions:
    • Go to bed at the same time—including weekends, if possible.
    • Wake up around the same time every morning. When you sleep late just one morning during a week, it may disturb your body clock. This will make it hard for you to fall asleep that night.
    • Do something relaxing before going to bed.
    • Exercise during the day. Don’t exercise right before going to bed.
    • Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol makes you excited. This prevents you from falling asleep or wakes you up during the night.
    • Don’t smoke. Smoking is always bad for the body. Smoking before bedtime keeps you awake.
If trying these tips over a couple of weeks does not help you, speak to your doctor. Do not take any sleeping pills without first asking your doctor. Many have strong side effects.
    21. According to the passage, if you have sleep problems for a few nights, you could be ______.
    A. lonely B. serious
    C. forgetful D. depressed
根据第四段中的“If your sleep problems continue for a few nights, you could suffer serious problems. Lack of sleep can affect learning and memory.”
    22. What does the text suggest that people with sleep problems should do?
    A. Eat vegetables and exercise regularly.
    B. Make up for lost sleep on weekends.
    C. Follow a fixed timetable for sleep.
    D. Sleep for seven hours every day.
根据第一条建议中谈到的“Go to bed at the same time ...”
    23. What can we learn from the suggestions?
    A. Getting up earlier one morning makes it easier to fall asleep that night.
    B. Listening to soft music before going to bed may help you fall asleep.
    C. Smokers and those who often drink alcohol usually have no sleep problems.
    D. Exercising in the evening will help you get to sleep.
根据第三条建议“Do something relaxing before going to bed.”

Paris is the city of dreams. If you plan to head to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one.
I paved my path to Paris through an exchange programme. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I had to complete—forms to fill in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless.
Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method proved to be very helpful.
Once I had finished classes for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighbourhoods to explore, and cafés to sit in. Read books about Paris. Talk to locals and other foreigners living there. But the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. The people watching, the sounds of the city and the colours as the seasons change, all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.
After spending five months wandering through the charming neighbourhoods, I fell in love with the atmosphere that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to the market each Sunday to enjoy the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in saying bonjour to the passers-by.
On my last day in Paris, I confidently said “Bonjour Monsieur” as I passed the little store down the street. I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.
    24. What does the underlined word “ecstasy” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Courage. B. Imagination.
    C. Happiness. D. Reputation.
根据作者对在巴黎街上漫步的喜爱及第四段中的“The people watching, the sounds of the city and the colours as the seasons change, all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.”
    25. What does the text mainly tell us?
    A. An exchange student’s life.
    B. Charming neighbourhoods.
    C. An exchange programme.
    D. A travelling experience.
根据第一段中的“But my experience was a romantic one.”和第二段中的“I paved my path to Paris through an exchange programme.” 故选A。

    A. Enjoying coffee in his spare time.
    B. Greeting people in French in the street.

根据第四段中的“But the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot.”
    27. According to the text, what left the author the deepest impression?
    A. The friendly people he met in Paris.

根据最后一段中的“I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.”

Since the earliest days of the United States, Americans began their days by eating whatever was most easily available. These foods often included instant cereals, pancakes or leftovers—food left over from the night before.
Today, ease is still an important factor when it comes to breakfast. However, what people eat has changed over time. And some of today’s common breakfast foods, such as cereal, are the result of very effective marketing.
“Advertising was practically invented to sell cereal,” says Heather Arndt Anderson. She is the writer of the book Breakfast: A History. Arndt Anderson adds, “One of the first ways advertising was successfully or effectively used was to convince mothers that it was okay for their children to eat these instant cereals. It offered working mothers a chance to let kids take care of themselves in the morning.”
Advertising also played an important part in orange juice becoming a morning drink. In 1916, farmers grew more oranges than usual, so advertisers began saying, “Drink an orange.” They aimed to persuade people that drinking orange juice was a healthy way to start the day. Two years later, a worldwide flu epidemic caused people to drink more orange juice for its health benefits.
As for coffee, it might have the 1773 Boston Tea Party to thank for its popularity in the United States. In that year, American colonists protested British taxation by throwing tea into Boston Harbor. In time, coffee became so popular that people travelling to the American West in the 1830s made sure to carry coffee beans on the journey.
Pancakes have also been around for a very long time. Researchers believe the world’s oldest naturally-preserved human mummy ate a pancake-like food as one of his last meals. Researchers think pancakes may have been made in the morning because they are much quicker to prepare than bread. Cooks could then have time to make fresh bread for dinner.
    28. Why did the mothers prefer instant cereals at that time?
    A. Because they were the only available food in the morning.
    B. Because they could be effectively digested in kids’ bodies.
    C. Because instant cereals were much healthier than other foods.
    D. Because mothers could free themselves from cooking for their kids.
根据第三段最后一句“It offered working mothers a chance to let kids take care of themselves in the morning.”
    29. What plays a vital role in making cereal and orange juice popular?
    A. Ease. B. Marketing.
    C. Campaigns. D. Health.
根据第二段中的“And some of today’s common breakfast foods, such as cereal, are the result of very effective marketing.”和第四段首句“Advertising also played an important part in orange juice becoming a morning drink.”
    30. What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
    A. The 1773 Boston Tea Party made coffee popular.
    B. Bread could be made much quicker in the morning.

    答案:A
    31. Where is this text most likely from?
    A. A technology report.
    B. A fiction story.

A new study has found North American migratory birds have been getting smaller over the past 40 years. Researchers say the finding suggests a warming climate could be affecting bird growth in North America and across the world.
The study was recently published in Ecology Letters. It involved data on nearly 80,000 birds killed from 1978 to 2016 in the city of Chicago, Illinois. Researchers measured the size of the birds. The birds included in the study had died after crashing into buildings during the spring and fall migrations. Fifty-two species of birds were studied. Most were different kinds of songbirds. These birds reproduce in cold areas of North America and spend their winters in areas south of Chicago. Over the 40-year period, body size decreased in all 52 species. The average body mass fell by 2.6 percent. Leg bone length dropped by 2.4 percent.
The only one area of growth was the wingspan(翼幅), which increased by 1.3 percent. The researchers said the wing growth likely happened to permit the birds to continue making long migrations with smaller bodies.
The study considered a world-famous principle known as Bergmann’s rule, in which individuals within a species grow smaller in warmer areas and grow larger in colder ones. Brian Weeks is a biologist at the University of Michigan. He helped lead the research. He told the Reuters news agency that he believes the results show a clear link between a warming climate and the growth of the birds. “In other words, climate change seems to be changing both the size and shape of these species,” he said.
Dave Willard works with Chicago’s Field Museum, which was in charge of measuring all the birds. He said nearly “everyone agrees that the climate is warming, but examples of just how that is affecting the natural world are only now coming to light”. The researchers plan to continue studying the Field Museum data in an effort to find additional evidence to support their findings.
    32. What does the study mainly focus on?
    A. Accidental deaths of birds.
    B. Directions of bird migration.
    C. Various factors affecting bird growth.
    D. Relationship between climate and birds’ size.

In terms of social psychology, one way of 61.________ (think) about this is that we feel much better about 62.________ (we) if we focus on someone who’s doing even worse, a process known as downwards social comparison. Everything’s going to be okay, because this person 63.________ (have) an even worse day than you are.

    答案:ourselves
    63. 解析:根据本句末尾“than you are”可知,从句部分应使用现在进行时,主语this person是第三人称单数,故填is having。
    答案:is having
    答案:to
a sort of一种,为固定搭配。
    答案:a

    Dear Jim,
With the new year approaching, our school Students’ Union will organise a new year party for the foreign students, which is designed to help you have a better understanding of Chinese culture. I am extremely thrilled to invite you to take part in it.
As previously scheduled, the party will be held in Room 101 of the Teaching Building from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. next Friday. During the party, not only can you sing a Chinese song, but you will also compete with each other to see how skilled you are at using chopsticks. Besides, you’ll learn how to make dumplings, which must be an interesting experience that you can’t miss.
      Looking forward to your arrival!
    Yours,
    Li Hua
Mary hadn’t seen her husband for 114 days due to the novel coronavirus (新型冠状病毒) at the senior care center where he lives in. So when she was told she could see him if she worked there as a dishwasher, she took the opportunity.
Her husband, Steve, had been suffering from Alzheimer’s for seven years and moved into a care centre in Jacksonville, Florida, last July. “I put him in a memory care centre and everything was going really, really well. He was getting along well with all the people,” she said. “And in March, obviously everything changed.”
She said she had been visiting her husband every night and would get him ready for bed. But when the novel coronavirus hit, hospitals and other health centres restricted (限制) visitors as a way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The care centre closed to visitors on March 11—the last time she saw Steve as a visitor.
Not knowing how long the lockdown would last, she wanted to find a way to see her husband regularly, and decided to get creative. “Originally, I sent an e-mail to the executive director saying, ‘OK, what do I need to do to get in there? Can I volunteer there? Can I get a job?” Mary said.
The care centre didn’t know how long the restriction would last either, and didn’t take Mary up on her offer at first. By the 16-week mark, she was becoming anxious and impatient. She decided to take more action and began writing to local and state officials, urging them to end the isolation (隔离) of patients in senior care centres.
She was worried about her husband spending so much time alone and said his behavior changed. “He actually had quarrels with one of the other people, and that’s a show of stress,” she said. “I’ve never seen him get involved in a quarrel with anyone.”
    注意:
    (1)续写词数应为150左右;
    (2)请按如下格式作答。
Two weeks ago, the care centre called Mary and said, “We’ve got a part-time job available and would you like to take it?” _______________
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mary said that her husband gets well now. ____________________
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________答案:
Two weeks ago, the care centre called Mary and said, “We’ve got a part-time job available and would you like to take it?” Mary said she was willing to do any job they offered for the opportunity to get inside, and what they ended up giving her was a dish washing position. The job is allowing Mary to see her husband regularly, and she can visit her husband every night and would get him ready for bed like before. In addition to finishing her work, she helps the staff look after other people with Alzheimer’s.
Mary said that her husband gets well now. “It is worthwhile to be able to visit him, and I can already tell the difference in his behaviors after visits,” she said. After seeing his wife visit him, he is very happy and feels relaxed as he is getting ready for bed. He doesn’t have quarrels with others and tries to get along well with them. “I’m so grateful. I am so lucky and fortunate, and I want to be with him every day,” she said.
