Steven J. Scott loves following rubbish trucks. His strange habit is meaningful when you consider that he's an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off rubbish trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Scott's jobs is protecting an industry behind the plastic shopping bags.
People in America use more than 100 billion thin film plastic bags every year. So many end up in tree branches or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts(收银台). People are not allowed to use the bags in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Eyeing these headwinds, plastic-bag makers are hiring scientists like Scott to make the case that their products are not as bad for the earth as most people imagine.
Among the bag makers` arguments(争论): many cities with bans(禁令)still allow shoppers to buy paper bags, which are more easily recycled than plastic bags, but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they represent a small percentage of all rubbish on the ground today.
The industry has also taken aim(瞄准)at the product that has appeared as its replacement: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out. However, longer-lasting reusable bags often need more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic.
Environmentalists don't have doubt about these points. They hope paper bags will be banned some day too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years.
58. What has Steven Scott been hired to do?
A. Help increase the shopping bag sales. B. Recycle the waste material.
C. Stop things falling off trucks. D. Argue for the use of plastic bags.
59. What does the word "headwinds" in paragraph 2 refer to??
A. Bans on plastic bags. B. Effects of city development.
C. Headaches caused by garbage. D. Plastic bags hung in trees.
60. What is a disadvantage of reusuable bags according to plastic-bag makers?
A. They are quite expensive. B. Replacing them can be difficult.
C. They are less strong than plastic bags. D. Producing them needs more energy.
61. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Plastic, Paper or Neither B. Industry, Pollution and Environment
C. Recycle or Throw them away D. Rubbish Collection and Waste Control
D

I argued with my parents for another year. Then, I went to Hull with a friend who was going to London by ship. He invited me to go with him, and I agreed. I did not even tell my parents before leaving. I just went. That was how all my bad luck began.

七、书面表达。
What do you think of learning online ?
At the beginning of this term, we started having online lessons. Some students made great progress, while others found themselves far behind their classmates.
As for me, I think learning online is good for us. We don’t have to go to school. So learning online is a teaching method for schools to avoid the spread of diseases. We can have all kinds of homework. The teacher can help us with our homework through the computer or telephone. In addition, we can watch the playback after class. In this way, we can review what we have learned.
However, learning online also has disadvantages. Some students are not strict with themselves. They don’t listen carefully in class and finish their homework on time. Sometimes, the WiFi is not good enough to make the online course run smoothly.
