Abandoned outside an orphanage as a baby and adopted at the age of three by a family in the Netherlands, 16-year-old model Abbing has become known around the world, as a model who has appeared in fashion magazines-but also as an inspiring representative of the albino(白化病人)community.
When it comes to modelling, Abbing has found her difference more of a blessing: She is represented by the Zebedee Talent agency, which aims to make people who have disabilities more visible in the world of fashion.
"I want to help people to see that being different is good, and definitely not some curse (诅咒), as they believe in countries like Tanzania and Malawi, " said Abbing. "Some companies try to include models who are different, but sometimes for the wrong reason, because they want to say: "Hey, look at us! We are also including people with differences or people of different color'. "
But Abbing welcomes what she sees as a shift. People now want to learn about and accept differences. "They should also talk with people with differences directly, ask them questions and listen to what they have to say, " she urged.
When not in front of the camera, Abbing loves climbing and swimming, and used to love competitive sports. It's important for her to focus on what is possible, rather than what isn't. "At school, teachers tend to look at the things you cannot do. I really didn't like that, although they meant well, I would rather they had focused on the things I can do instead. "
Abbing loves travelling, meeting new people and particularly working with artists. The teen also pours her creativity into decoration artwork. "Because I see the world from a different angle, my artwork turns out a little different as well, " she said.
    24. What is the main reason for Abbing's being chosen by Zebedee?
    A. Her physical disability.
    B. Her youthful appearance.
    C. Her success in the fashion world.
    D. Her fame in the albino community.
    25. What does Abbing think of some companies hiring disabled models?
    A. It is racial discrimination.
    B. It is a positive change.
    C. It is completely justified.
    D. It is real acceptance of difference.
    26. Which of the following best describes Abbing?
    A. Creative and honest.
    B. Outgoing and patient.
    C. Confident and optimistic.
    D. Athletic and humorous.
    27. What message does Abbing's story convey?
    A. Everyone is born equal.
    B. Don't judge a book by its cover.
    C. Love makes the world go around.
    D. You are beautiful the way you are.
    C
Every 40 days a language dies. This "catastrophic" loss is being intensified by the climate crisis, according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.
Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫 害), with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the "final nail in the coffin" for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent.
"Languages are already endangered, ” says Anastasia Richl, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl. "It seems particularly cruel, " she says, "that most of the world's languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people. " Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12, 189 km2, has 110 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise. "Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise, " she says. Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.
In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022. Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is "not only important for them, but for all humanity", said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.
    28. What does the underlined phrase "final nail in the coffin" in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. The last straw.
    B. The last challenge.
    C. The last possibility.
    D. The last opportunity.
    29. Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3?
    A. To explain the main reason for language density.
    B. To show the common features of endangered languages.
    C. To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.
    D. To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.
    30. What does the International. Decade of Indigenous Languages aim to do?
    A. Support migrants to access local education.
    B. Discourage people from massive migration.
    C. Improve the living conditions of minority groups.
    D. Preserve the languages of indigenous communities.
    31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
    A. Faced with Disasters: Communities Have to Leave
    B. Lost for Words: Climate Crisis Brings Threat of Catastrophe
    C. Upset at Extinction: UN Urges International Cooperation
    D. Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis
    D
Technology seems to discourage slow reading. Reading on screens tires eyes easily. So online writing is more skimmable than print. The neuroscientist Mary Walt argued this "new norm” of skim reading is producing "an invisible, dramatic transformation” in how readers process words. And brains now favor rapid absorption of information, rather than skills developed by deeper reading, like critical analysis.
We shouldn't overplay this danger. All readers skim. Skimming is the skill we acquire as we learn to read more skillfully. And fears about declining attention spans have proved to be false alarms. "Some critics worry about attention span and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline, " The American author Selvin wrote. "But nobody ever said poems were evidence of short attention spans. ”
Yet the Internet has certainly changed the way we read. First, it means there's more to read, because more people than ever are writing. And digital writing means rapid release and response. Once published, online articles start forming a comment string underneath. Such mode of writing and reading can be interactive and fun, but is probably lacking in profound reflection.
Perhaps we should slow down. Reading is constantly promoted as a source of personal achievement. But this advocacy emphasizes "enthusiastic" or "eager" reading -neither suggest slow absorption. To a slow reader, a piece of writing can only be fully understood by immersing oneself in their slow comprehension of words. The slow reader is like a swimmer who stops counting the number of pool laps he's done and just enjoys how his body feels and moves in water.
The human need for this kind of deep reading is too determined for any new technology to destroy. We often assume technological change can't be stopped, so older media are kicked out by newer, more virtual forms. In practice, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The Kindle hasn't killed off printed books any more than cars killed off bicycles. We still want to enjoy slowly-formed ideas and carefully-chosen words. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.
    32. What is the author's attitude towards Selvin's opinion?
    A. Favorable. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
    33. Which statement would the author probably agree with?
    A. Advocacy of passionate reading helps promote slow reading.
    B. Digital writing and reading tends to ignore careful reflection.
    C. We should be aware of the impact skimming has on the brain.
    D. The number of Internet readers declines due to technology.
    34. Why is "swimmer” mentioned in paragraph 4?
    A. To demonstrate how to immerse oneself in thought.
    B. To stress swimming differs from reading.
    C. To show slow reading is better than fast reading.
    D. To illustrate what slow reading is like.
    35. Which would be the best title for the passage?
    A. Slow Reading is Here to Stay
    B. Technology Prevents Slow Reading
    C. Reflections on Deep Reading
    D. The Wonder of Deep Reading

"Why are we bringing groceries for Mrs. Killinger?" Bobby asked his mother, Anna, as they walked back from the supermarket with a few extra bags for their elderly neighbor. He enjoyed helping his mother with these tasks, but they had never bought anything for any neighbor before.
"Honey, Mrs. Killinger is now having trouble walking around, so I offered to bring some things from the market, " Anna explained as they climbed up the wooden steps to Mrs. Killinger's house and rang the doorbell.
"OK, but she could get a wheelchair and move around, ” the boy commented as if it was the most straightforward solution in the world.
"You know, Bobby. Mrs. Killinger doesn't have the money to buy one right now.
They can get expensive. " Anna explained, and Bobby pursed his lips in thought.
Mrs. Killinger answered the door, smiled, and invited them for some coffee and cookies. Bobby noticed how slowly she moved, and an idea formed in his mind. He told the older woman and his mother all about it, and they grinned at him indulgently (宽容地笑). Neither of them thought Bobby would do it.
That's why Anna was surprised the following day when Bobby had made several ads. "Mom, can you add your phone number here, so people can call me with work?"
"Oh, honey. This is very sweet. But I don't know if it'll be enough to raise the money she needs to buy a wheelchair, " Anna explained. She loved that her son had such a big heart, but he didn't want him to be heartbroken if no one called or he couldn't raise the money.
"Well, at least, I can say that I tried to help, " Bobby chirped (欢快地说) with his bright smile and eager eyes. Anna nodded and added her phone number to the ads. In his ad, Bobby offered his "services" which included helping with shopping, mowing lawns, keeping company, and walking dogs. He also left the price of his services, which made Anna smile. He honestly just wanted to help.

Anna helped him put up the ads around the neighborhood. Soon the word spread. Impressed by the young boy's initiative, people showed their support in various ways — some hired him to do chores, some gave donations, while others spread the word to their friends and family. Exhausted and busy, Bobby felt very happy inside. Days went by, and Bobby counted the money he raised every day: one dollar, two dollars, three dollars. . . It seemed like he was getting closer to his goal, but he seemingly had a long way to go.
Two weeks later, Bobby still hadn't raised the amount he wanted. His mom suggested he negotiate with a wheelchair manufacturer to see if they could offer a lower price. Immediately, he contacted the manufacturer hoping for a discount. Pleasantly surprised, the manufacturer offered to donate a wheelchair to Mrs. Killinger. Then, Bobby realized that his small act of kindness had grown into' something bigger. Why not use the money he had raised to start a charity website to help more people like Mrs. Killinger? Today, the website is well known helping countless disabled elderly people. Who would have thought that it all started with a little boy's small act of kindness?
    Another possible version:
Anna helped him put up the ads around the neighborhood. Very quickly Bobby's ads spread around. Amazed to hear that a ten-year-old was offering his services to help an elderly iwoman, people from all over the city started calling and asking Bobby to do jobs for them. Soon he was asked to walk dogs, buy groceries, and mow lawns for people. Meanwhile, Mrs. Killinger was very pleased with the extra companionship Bobby provided and Bobby quickly gained a reputation as a reliable and kind helper. Seeing the funds increasing, Bobby felt more than delighted.
Two weeks later; Bobby still hadn't raised the amount of money he wanted. But Bobby didn't give up. He continued to offer his services to anyone who needed it. Bobby even started a GoFundMe page and shared it on his social media accounts, hoping to reach more people/ His efforts paid off when a local news station shared his story, and more people offered their support. Thanks to his hard work and kindness, Bobby was finally able to raise enough funds to purchase a new wheelchair for Mrs. Killinger.

M: So what do you think we should give our cousin Lucy for her birthday? She's just moved into her new apartment.
W: I think she'd like a microwave. In fact, I've already had a quick look online and seen a few special offers.
    (Text 2)
    M: Can I help you?
W: Oh, I couldn't ask you to do that. We just met. My brother is supposed to be helping me after shopping.
M: It's no problem, really. I can help you until he gets here. After all, what are neighbors for?
    (Text 3)
W: How are you getting on with your Welsh language course?
M: Not too bad actually. Other people have told me the grammar would be really hard, but actually it isn't too bad. The main issue I have to deal with is our teacher- if she spoke more slowly, I'd understand a lot more.
    (Text 4)
M: What would you like to eat, Lauren?
    W: I don't know, Dad. I really love fish, so let's have a look. . .
M: Hmm, I can't see anything like that on the menu. There's plenty of other things like steak, chicken, all the usual stuff. . .
    (Text 5)
W: Music World is interesting, isn't it? Their stuff's so affordable compared with bigger stores.
M: Yes, and the bigger stores don't cut their prices massively like Music World.
W: You're right. I actually ran into the guitarist Jon Wyvern in there.

    第二节(Text 6)
M: That play was really great, wasn't it?
W: I thought the second half was a bit less interesting than the first. You could predict exactly what was going to happen.
M: Really? I wasn't sure how it would end. The actors were excellent though, weren't they?
W: Well actually I expected the performances to be a lot better. I must say though the costumes were brilliant.
M: I think you're a bit hard to please when you go to the theater, so why don't you choose the next play we see?
W: OK, well, I hope you'll like what I choose!

M: It's too hot, without a breath of wind. When's it going to end?
W: What are you talking about? It's nice! Do you want it to be cold and grey again? Why don't we go to the beach for the day? We can sunbathe, swim a little if the water's not too cold. . .
M: Absolutely not! I can't stand lying in the sun. I get sweaty and then sand sticks to me.
W: So what are you going to do? Sit inside all day?
M: Let's go somewhere where it's cool inside. We could go ice skating.
W: No way! I'm not wasting a nice day like this. You go ahead, but I'm going out.

W: Hello, Tom. This is Jessica from security. I'm calling to remind you of the training session on our new security procedures. It is scheduled to take place at 2 pm on April 15th.
M: I received an email about it last week. Actually, I was going to tell you that I won't be able to make it. I need to fly to London to close a deal with our business partner on April 14th and I won't be back here until April 20th.
W: That's okay. We are planning to hold another session for anyone who can't make this first one. I'll send you an email as soon as the details are confirmed.

W: Welcome to the Leisure Programme. Today I'm interviewing Jack Hutchinson, the manager
of the new leisure center that opened last month. Welcome to the program, Jack.
    M: Thank you.
W: Jack, there are several leisure centers in this area. Why do you think yours has become so popular already? Is it because it has such a fantastic gym?
M: No, I don't think it's because of the gym. I think it's because so many articles have been written about us in the local newspapers. People want to see if we're as good as the journalists say.
W: So, tell us about the center.
M: Well, let's start with the pools - we've already got a very good, large swimming pool with a diving area. There's also a smaller training pool, and there are plans to build a fun pool with slides for children.
    W: What about courts?
M: There are indoor courts for tennis, badminton, volleyball and basketball. The outdoor tennis courts aren't quite ready, but they'll be available next week.
W: So, in what way do you think your leisure center is better than others?
M: The facilities are of a very high quality. We offer a wide range of different activities and we have a café that sells good, healthy food.
W: Well, . other centers offer all that, too.
M: Yes, but they don't offer our prices. Like other centers, we offer discounts to students and the over 60s, but people can also buy a membership card for just £15 a month. You pay much more for membership in other centers.

W: Welcome to all of you. I'm Sally, your guide for this tour of the Bicentennial Park. So let's get under way on our tour around this wonderful park.
I'll start today with some general background information. There used to be a lot of factories in this area until the 1960s, so most of the exciting park space all around you was originally warehouses and storehouses.
The idea of building a public park here was first discussed when a property developer proposed a high-rise housing development, but the local community wasn't happy. If the land was to be cleared up, they wanted to use the site for recreation. Residents wanted open space for outdoor activities, rather than housing or even an indoor sports complex.
Now to the Bicentennial Park itself. It has two areas, a nature reserve and a formal park with man- made features and gardens. The tall blue-and-white building in front of us is called the Tower and is the center point for the formal park. It stands twelve meters high, so follow me up the stairs to where we can take advantage of the fantastic views.
