Can you write down a Chinese word being read to you in a short time?
Lu Jialei, 14, from Hangzhou Foreign Language School, won the first place in the CCTV Chinese Characters Dictation Competition(《中国汉字听写大会》) on Oct. 18, 2013. About 160 students took part in it. The host read a word to each of them, explained its meaning and giving sentences. The contestant(比赛者) was required to write down the word within half a minute.
To prepare for the contest, she and her teammates studied the Modern Chinese Dictionary for 10 days. There are more than 56,000 entries(词条) including characters, words and phrases in it. She also had a secret weapon. She had well studied how Chinese words were made up of.
In the final, judges gave her the word “wanluan” and said it means “graceful and beautiful”. The word was so strange to her that she had never heard of it. But she made a good guess. Chinese characters meaning beautiful often have “女” in them, while many Chinese characters pronounced “luan” have “亦”. So she wrote down “婉娈”. It turned out that her guess was right.
Winning the contest was a “surprise” to Lu. “I am not the smartest one,” she said. “But I paid attention to details and did the best this time.”
“When others are interested in the plot of the story, she looks at how the author uses words and sentences to express himself or herself,” said Su Yunsheng, Lu’s Chinese teacher. For middle and primary school students, being able to cook has become a must. They will also need to learn how to plant vegetables, raise poultry(家禽) and maintain home appliances(修理家电) under new requirements for labor education.
The Ministry of Education(MOE教育部) brought out a new standard for labor education in schools last year. Starting from the 2022 fall semester, students in primary and middle schools have to take courses on labor skills at least once a week.
Labor education helps students value hard work. It includes things like household chores(家务), on-campus labor and community volunteer services.
The new standards include three types of labor tasks. The first is for things like everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances.
