While fossil fuels—coal, oil, gas—still produce roughly 85 percent of the world’s energy supply, it’s clearer than ever that the future belongs to renewable sources such as wind and solar. The move to renewables is picking up the development around the world: They now account for more than half of new power sources going in operation.
Some growth stems from a commitment by governments and farsighted businesses to fund cleaner energy sources. But increasingly the story is about the falling prices of renewables, especially wind and solar. The cost of solar panels has dropped by 80 percent and the cost of wind turbines(涡轮机)by close to one-third in the past eight years.
In many parts of the world renewable energy is already an important energy source. In Scotland, for example, wind turbines provide enough electricity to power 95 percent of homes. While the rest of the world takes the lead, especially China and Europe, the United States is also seeing an amazing shift. In March, for the first time, wind and solar power accounted for more than 10 percent of the power generated in the US, reported the US Energy Information Administration.
President Trump has underlined fossil fuels — especially coal — as the path to economic growth. In a recent speech in Iowa, he dismissed wind power as an unreliable energy source. But that message did not play well with many in Iowa, where wind turbines dot the fields and provide 36 percent of the state’s electricity generation — and where tech enterprise like Microsoft are being attracted by the availability of clean energy to power their data centers.
The question “what happens when the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine?” has provided a quick remark for skeptics. But an increase in the storage capacity of batteries is making their ability to keep power flowing around the clock more likely.
The advance is driven in part by vehicle manufacturers, who are placing big bets on battery-powered electric vehicles. Although electric cars are still uncommon on roads now, this massive investment could change the picture rapidly in coming years.
While there’s a long way to go, the trend lines for renewables are zooming. The pace of change in energy sources appears to be speeding up — perhaps just in time to have a meaningful effect in slowing climate change. What Washington does — or doesn’t do — to promote alternative energy may mean less and less at a time of a global shift in thought.
4、According to Paragraph 3, the use of renewable energy in America ______.
    A. has proved to be impractical B. is as common as in Europe
    C. faces many challenges D. is progressing greatly
5、It can be learned that in Iowa ______.

6、Which of the following is true about clean energy according to Paragraphs 5&6?
    A. Its application has increased battery storage.
    B. Its continuous supply is becoming a reality.
    C. It is commonly used in car manufacturing.
    D. Its sustainable exploitation will remain difficult.
7、It can be inferred from the last paragraph that renewable energy ______.
    A. will bring the US closer to other countries
    B. will accelerate global environmental change
    C. is not really encouraged by the US government
    D. is not competitive enough with regard to its cost
Using a toilet can pay for your coffee or buy your bananas at a university in South Korea, where human waste is being used to help power a building.
Cho Jae-weon, a professor at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), has designed an eco-friendly (环保) toilet—the BeeVi toilet, which is connected to a lab that uses human waste to produce biogals (沼气).
The BeeVi toilet sends human waste into an underground tank in a way that reduces water use. There, the waste is broken down into methane (甲烷) which becomes a source of power for the building.
“If we think out of the box, human waste has great value to make power ,” Cho said. He added that a person defecates (排便) about 500 g a day, which can be turned into 50 litres of methane gas. This gas can produce 0.5 point kWh of electricity or be used to drive a car for about 1.2km (0.75miles).
Cho has created a digital currency (货币) called Ggool. Each person using the eco-friendly toilet earns 10 Ggool a day. Students can use it to buy goods within the university, from coffee to fruits and books.
“I only thought that human waste is dirty, but now it has become a treasure of great value to me,” student Heo HuI-jin said. “ I even talk about it during mealtimes, thinking about buying a new book I want.”
8、What is the passage mainly about?

    C. A science report D. A popular novel
The college years are supposed to be a time for important growth in autonomy and the development of adult identity. However, now they are becoming an extended period of adolescence, during which many of today’s students are not shouldered with adult responsibilities.
For previous generation, college was decisive break from parental control; guidance and support needed help from people of the same age and from within. In the past two decades, however, continued connection with and dependence on family, thanks to cell phones, email and social media, have increased significantly. Some parents go so far as to help with coursework. Instead of promoting the idea of college as a passage from the shelter of family to autonomy and adult responsibility, universities have given in to the idea that they should provide the same environment as that of the home.
To prepare for increased autonomy and responsibility, college needs to be a time of exploration and experimentation. This process involves “trying on” new ways of thinking about oneself both intellectually and personally. While we should provide “safe spaces” within colleges, we must also make it safe to express opinions and challenge majority views. Intellectual growth and flexibility are fostered by strict debate and questioning.
Learning to deal with the social world is equally important. Because a college community differs from the family, many students will struggle to find a sense of belonging. If students rely on administrators to regulate their social behavior and thinking pattern, they are not facing the challenge of finding an identity within a larger and complex community.
Moreover, the tendency for universities to monitor and shape student behavaior runs up against another characteristic of young adults: the response to being controlled by their elders. If acceptable social behavior is too strictly defined and controlled, the insensitive or aggressive behavior that administrator are seeking to minimize may actually be encouraged.
It is not surprising that young people are likely to burst out, particularly when there are reasons to do so. Our generation once joined hands and stood firm at times of national emergency. What is lacking today is the conflict between adolescent’s desire for autonomy and their understanding of an unsafe world. Therefore, there is the desire for their dorms to be replacement homes and not places to experience intellectual growth.
Every college discussion about community values, social climate and behavior should include recognition of the developmental importance of student autonomy and self-regulation, of the necessary tension between safety and self-discovery.
12、What’s the author’s attitude toward continued parental guidance to college students?
    A. Sympathetic B. Disapproving C. Supportive D. Neutral
13、The underline word “passage” in paragraph 2 means _______.
    A. change B. choice C. text D. extension
14、According to the author, what role should college play?
    A. To develop a shared identity among students
    B. B. To define and regulate students’ social behavior
    C. To provide a safe world without tension for students
    D. To foster students’ intellectual and personal development
15、Which one is the best title for the passage?
    A. Adolescent Autonomy VS Adult Interference
    B. Social Behavioral Cultivation for College Life
    C. College Should Be a HomeAway From Home
    D. Why College Is Not Home

57-year-old Sean Currey knew the value of treating others in the way he intended to be treated. Hence, he lived by that principle in his whole life, which eventually took him off the streets at the right time.
Sean Currey became unemployed during the pandemic, and ended up homeless, searching through dustbins (垃圾桶) around San Rafael, California, to meet his needs. Once, he made an unusual find at the bottom of a dustbin just behind a coffee shop. Looking through the purse, he discovered a series of credit cards, debit cards, healthcare cards and a business card, identifying the purse’s owner as an 80-year-old woman, Evelyn Topper.
Interestingly, the woman lived in Mill Valley, about six miles away from his location. Knowing how discouraging it was to lose one’s possessions, Currey figured he needed to return the purse to its rightful owner. Then Sean Currey gave Topper a call, using the contact details on the business card. His guess was accurate, as the elderly woman had been extremely worried since losing her purse days ago.
According to Evelyn Topper, she stopped by a coffee shop on December 9 to get a hot drink and a bubble tea for her 12-year-old granddaughter. She paid for both drinks and put the purse into her pocket. Unfortunately, the purse fell off somewhere along the way, and by the time she reached home, she discovered her purse was gone.
Evelyn Topper contacted the coffee shop immediately, receiving the heartbreaking news that her purse was not there. Next, she checked her car, and all the rooms in her apartment, but did not find it. Eventually, she concluded the purse must have been dropped somewhere on the way home.
Just when she gave up finding her purse, Topper received Currey’s call. She screamed in delight when she learned he had her purse. They met up immediately in front of a nearby shopping center, where Currey returned the purse. The woman called her daughter and granddaughter, Mikayla Gounard, to tell them what had happened. That was when Mikayla decided to repay Currey’s kindness.
    注意:
        1.续写词数应为150左右;

    4、答案:D
While the rest of the world takes the lead, especially China and Europe, the United States is also seeing an amazing shift. In March, for the first time, wind and solar power accounted for more than 10 percent of the power generated in the US, reported the US Energy Information Administration.“当世界其他地区,尤其是中国和欧洲,处于领先地位时,美国也看到了惊人的转变。据美国能源情报署(US Energy Information Administration)报道,今年3月,风能和太阳能首次占到美国发电量的10%以上。” “the United States is also seeing an amazing shift”,“amazing shift”与D阐述的“progressing greatly”对应,表示一个好的进展(转变)。
But that message did not play well with many in Iowa, where wind turbines dot the fields and provide 36 percent of the state’s electricity generation — and where tech enterprise like Microsoft are being attracted by the availability of clean energy to power their data centers.“但这一信息在爱荷华州并不受欢迎,那里风力涡轮机遍布各地,为该州提供了36%的电力,而像微软这样的科技企业正被清洁能源的可用性所吸引,为他们的数据中心提供动力。”
根据第五段中an increase in the storage capacity of batteries is making their ability to keep power flowing around the clock more likely.“电池存储容量的增加使它们更有可能保持24小时供电。” Although electric cars are still uncommon on roads now, this massive investment could change the picture rapidly in coming years.“尽管电动汽车目前在公路上还不常见,但这笔巨额投资可能会在未来几年迅速改变这一局面。”
What Washington does — or doesn’t do — to promote alternative energy may mean less and less at a time of a global shift in thought.
    8、答案:A
根据第一段的“Using a toilet can pay for your coffee or buy your bananas at a university in South Korea, where human waste is being used to help power a building.(在韩国的一所大学里,人们可以用上厕所来付咖啡的钱,也可以买香蕉。在韩国,人们用粪便为一栋建筑提供动力)”以及第三段的“The BeeVi toilet sends human waste into an underground tank in a way that reduces water use. There, the waste is broken down into methane (甲烷) which becomes a source of power for the building.(BeeVi厕所将人体排泄物倒入地下水箱,减少了用水量。在那里,废物被分解成甲烷,成为建筑物的动力来源)”可知,本文在介绍一种新型的环境友好型厕所,该厕所可以将人类粪便变成动力,给建筑物提供能源。故选A项。
根据第五段的“Cho has created a digital currency (货币) called Ggool. Each person using the eco-friendly toilet earns 10 Ggool a day. Students can use it to buy goods within the university, from coffee to fruits and books.(Cho创造了一种叫做Ggool的数字货币。每个使用环保厕所的人每天可以赚10英镑。学生可以用它在大学里购买商品,从咖啡到水果和书籍)”可知,学生买东西当然需要用到钱,而这个钱其实是Cho所创造的一种叫做Ggool的货币,学生使用了环保厕所后就能赚得这些货币,从而用它来买东西,故可知此处的it指代的是这种货币。故选D项。
    10、答案:B
解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段的““I only thought that human waste is dirty, but now it has become a treasure of great value to me, ” student Heo HuI-jin said. “ I even talk about it during mealtimes, thinking about buying a new book I want.”(学生Heo HuI-jin说:“我以前只认为人类的排泄物很脏,但现在它对我来说已经成为了一种非常有价值的财富。”“我甚至在吃饭的时候谈论它,想着买一本我想要的新书。”)”可知,Heo HuI-jin以前觉得人的排泄物很脏,但是现在能够通过使用这种环保厕所赚得货币买东西,她觉得它变成一种宝贵的东西,因此可知,她的想法发生了改变,觉得人的排泄物是宝贵的。故选B项。
    11、答案:C
解析:推理判断题。根据第二段的“Cho Jae-weon, a professor at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), has designed an eco-friendly (环保) toilet—the BeeVi toilet, which is connected to a lab that uses human waste to produce biogals (沼气).(蔚山国立科学技术学院的教授Cho Jae-weon设计了一种生态友好型厕所BeeVi厕所,它与一个利用人类粪便生产生物气体的实验室相连)”以及第三段的“The BeeVi toilet sends human waste into an underground tank in a way that reduces water use. There, the waste is broken down into methane (甲烷) which becomes a source of power for the building.(BeeVi厕所将人体排泄物倒入地下水箱,减少了用水量。在那里,废物被分解成甲烷,成为建筑物的动力来源)”可知,本文在科普一种新型的环保厕所,故可知这篇文章应该出自于科学类型的文章或者报告。故选C项。
    12、答案:B
解析:推理判断题。根据第一段的“The college years are supposed to be a time for important growth in autonomy and the development of adult identity. However, now they are becoming an extended period of adolescence, during which many of today’s students are not shouldered with adult responsibilities.(大学时期应该是自主能力和成人身份发展的重要时期。然而,现在他们正在成为青春期的延伸期,在这段时间里,许多学生没有承担成人的责任。)”可知,作者认为,大学不应该成为孩子们依赖的“家”,故判断出作者不赞成父母继续指导上大学的孩子。故选B。
    13、答案:A
故选A。
根据第三段的“Intellectual growth and flexibility are fostered by strict debate and questioning.(严格的辩论和提问可以促进智力的增长和灵活性。)”和最后一段的“Every college discussion about community values, social climate and behavior should include recognition of the developmental importance of student autonomy and self-regulation, of the necessary tension between safety and self-discovery.(每个关于社区价值观、社会气候和行为的大学讨论都应该包括认识到学生自主和自我调节的发展重要性,认识到安全和自我发现之间的必要张力。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段的“Instead of promoting the idea of college as a passage from the shelter of family to autonomy and adult responsibility, universities have given in to the idea that they should provide the same environment as that of the home.(大学并没有宣扬大学是一个从家庭庇护到自主和成人责任的通道,而是屈服于这样一种观念:大学应该提供和家庭一样的环境。)”和第三段的“To prepare for increased autonomy and responsibility, college needs to be a time of exploration and experimentation.(为了为提高自主性和责任感做准备,大学需要成为一个探索和实验的时间。)”
解析:①根据前文“If you haven’t tried it yet, you should! It is not only relaxing but also beneficial for your mental health. (如果你还没有尝试过,你应该试试!它不仅放松,而且有利于你的心理健康。)”可知,后文应该提出听音乐带来的好处。B选项“Here are some of the benefits.(以下是一些好处。)”
②根据前文“One of its benefits is a reduction in the levels of stress and anxiety. (它的一个好处是减少压力和焦虑的水平。)”可知,此处强调听音乐的好处是减少压力和焦虑。后文应该承接该话题。E选项“Stress is one of the most common issues in today’s world.(压力是当今世界最常见的问题之一。)”
F选项“Maintaining an emotional balance is very important.(保持情绪平衡是非常重要的。)”
④根据前文“Inspire You(激励你)”以及“This is a great inspiration to someone who has lost hope in life. 32、答案:officially;has earned; points;who ;to produce;combination;for;the;made;employing
故填who。
本句运用了make up one’s mind to do sth,意为“下定决心去做某事”,故填to produce。
本句运用了be famous for,意为“以……闻名”。故填for。
故填the。
故填made。
Dear Jim,
Delighted to know that you are fascinated by our activity called “Learning From Farmers”, I’m writing to tell you some relevant details.
Last Friday, we joined in the activity organized by our school. Upon arriving at the farm, we were deeply attracted by the local rural landscape. Under the precise instruction of experienced farmers, we learned to perform various tasks such as helping the owner of a farm to plant trees, sowing seeds in rows and feeding ducks. Contentment replaced the tiredness when we completed the tasks.
Everyone of us considered the activity both meaningful and rewarding, for we not only gained knowledge of farming but also had a better understanding of nature.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua
It was Mikayla’s twelfth birthday. Determined to reward Currey’s kindness, Mikayla urged her invited relatives and friends to send donations instead of gifts. She decided to direct her kind gesture to the homeless man. As a result, Mikayla ended up raising $475 at her birthday party. As more people continued showing their willingness to help, Mikayla’s mom created a GoFundMe page for the man, gathering up to $30,000.
The money collected at the birthday party changed Currey’s life. He never imagined that his honesty would be rewarded in such a pleasant way. He was very happy with the result because he needn’t go cold and hungry for a long time. With the money, he could find a room to live in. Besides, moved by his honesty, an employer approached him and offered him a job in his company. Hopefully, his gesture of honesty would encourage more people to do the right thing.
