My mother was never truly happy in Connecticut finding the winter bitter cold and the culture provincial (偏狭的). Though she grew up in New Jersey, she moved to San Francisco in her early twenties, met and married my dad out there. After I was born, they decided to return east, closer to their own parents. But she never let go of her love for the Bay Area.
California was always part of the conversation when I was a kid. I ate meals off a map-of-the-world placemat (餐垫), and Mom taught me to identify San Francisco before I learned where Hartford was. She told us stories of perfection on a single city, fantasizing about retiring out west. My dad would play along, but his heart wasn’t in the same place.
While my mother’s status in the nonprofit world advanced, her desire to move back to her favorite place grew strong. She applied for jobs in the Bay, underwent bicoastal Skype screenings, even traveled out for a couple of interviews on a whim (心血来潮). Sometimes her cover letters disappeared, other times she made it down to the final two candidates. With each rejection, she promised to make her next job application even stronger.
This past May, I relocated from San Francisco to New York for a job. A few weeks later, Mom called me. Her pursuit had finally paid off. She’s been offered a vice president position at a public health nonprofit in Oakland. A few weeks later, she packed up her baggage and left Connecticut for good.
Our lives are more semblable than ever these days. We’re both discovering our new homes, making friends. We’re looking for a good yoga studio to join, reading the same books and chatting about the plots by text message. I emailed her photos from my trip to Burning Man and she replied with stories about her new coworkers who go every year. There’s even time for the occasional dating disaster.
Perhaps that’s the paradox (悖论) of growing older. Things will always change, and they can change immediately—my mother is proof. But an individual’s own power to create change always stays the same. Everything can change, and therefore nothing ever really changes.
Now when I’m out west for a visit, Mom meets me at a station with her big bag. We stop by the Grand Lake farmers market, picking out the freshest seasonal ingredients, before hiking up the hill to her new apartment. One of these days, I’ll actually cook her dinner.
4. What can we know about the author’s mother?
A. She always likes to struggle on her own. B. Nothing can stop her from reaching her goal.
C. She owns a public health nonprofit company. D. She takes everything of her daughter on herself.
5. What does the underlined word “semblable” mean?
A. Changeable. B. Comfortable. C. Similar. D. Creative.
6. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. The relationship between the author and her mother is very good.
B. The author would not like to let her mother work on.
C. The author and her mother live in the same city at present.
D. The author would not like to change her life situation.
7. In the last paragraph, the author mainly wants to tell the readers that ________.
A. her family’s life always change because of her mother
B. the mother-daughter feelings will stay the same forever
C. she has grown up during her family’s constant moves
D. her mother always wants to change her current situations
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. B

C
When “irregardless” was included in Merriam-Webster dictionary, it caused wide disagreements. “Irregardless” has been in widespread and near-constant use since 1795, when a newspaper called The Charleston City Gazelle of Charleston Ga first used it. “We do not make the English language, and we merely record it,” the dictionary’s staff wrote in “Words of the Week”.
The word’s definition, when we read it, would seem to be without regard. However, Merriam-Webster defines “irregardless” as “nonstandard” but meaning the same as “regardless”. According to Merriam-Webster, “Many people find ‘irregardless’ to be a ridiculous word, as the ir-prefix usually indicates negative meaning; however, in this case it appears to make the meaning of ‘regardless’ stronger.”
“It’s not a real word. I don’t care what the dictionary says.” responds author Michelle Ray, who teaches English in Silver Spring, Md. And she says she’s still planning to mark “irregardless” as incorrect on her students’ work.
An American newspaper the Baltimore Sun published the word in editor John McIntyre’s commentary on Saturday: “‘Irregardless’ is too a word; you just don’t understand dictionaries. People get upset about the dictionary because they think it is some sort of official document. But actually, it’s not. It’s just lexicographers identifying words that people use and trying to find out how they are spelled, how they are pronounced, what meanings they have and where they came from.”
“The dictionary’s recognition doesn’t enroll a word as correct in the English language,” McIntyre says. “It just says this is a word that a lot of people use in English. And here’s what we know about it.” So it’s a word, but its use is still discouraged in formal writing.
8. What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A. To criticize the use of “irregardless”. B. To introduce the topic.
C To make a definition of “irregardless”. D. To give an example.
9. What can we learn from the passage?
A. “Irregardless” had been in widespread and near-constant use before 1975.
B. The dictionary’s staff rarely record the English language.
C. Michelle Ray thinks the use of “irregardless” formal but incorrect.
D. People are still not encouraged to use “irregardless” in formal writing.
10. What is the attitude of McIntyre to the appearance of “irregardless” in Merriam-Webster dictionary?
A. Favorable. B. Conservative.
C. Indifferent. D. Ambiguous.
11. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. “Irregardless” Is Frequently Used in Formal Writing
B. “Irregardless” Shouldn’t Be Included in the Dictionary
C. Regardless of What You Think, “Irregardless” Is a Word
D. Experts Can’t Agree on the Meaning of “Irregardless”
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章介绍了“irregardless”一词被收录进韦氏词典在社会上引起了广泛的争议,irregardless这个单词的起源,韦氏词典对其的解释以及人们对此的不同看法。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的第一句“When ‘irregardless’ was included in Merriam-Webster dictionary, it caused wide disagreements. (当irregardless一词被收录进韦氏词典在社会上引起了广泛的争议)”可知,本文就此争议展开讲述,故第一段的作用是引出了本文主要讨论的主题。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段最后一句话“So it’s a word, but its use is still discouraged in formal writing.(因此,它是一个单词,但并不鼓励在书面正式语中使用它)”可知,该词不被鼓励在正式书面语中使用。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段第一句中的“ ‘Irregardless’ is too a word; you just don’t understand dictionaries.(Irregardless也是个单词,只是你不懂得字典)”和最后一段中的第一句“The dictionary’s recognition doesn’t enroll a word as correct in the English language.(字典的认知并没有将一个单登记为正确的)”可推知,McIntyre认为它的确是个单词,只是我们对字典不够理解,故McIntyre对irregardless一词被收录进韦氏词典这一事情是支持的。故选A。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,尽管irregardless一词被收录进韦氏词典引起了广泛的争议,但根据文章最后一段最后一句“So it’s a word, but its use is still discouraged in formal writing. (因此它是一个单词,只是在正式书面你表达中并不鼓励使用这个单词)”可知,C选项“不管你怎么想,‘irregardless’就是算一个单词”最适合作为文章标题。故选C。
D
Published in 1859, Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species made a number of brave claims about the nature of evolution—including the suggestion that an animal species with greater diversity in its line will produce more subspecies too. This assumption is not as obvious as you might think at first. And it was finally found to be true for birds only a couple of years ago. Now, researchers from the University of Cambridge in the UK have shown that Darwin was right on this point for mammals (哺乳动物), too.
Apart from being an important contribution to our understanding of evolution in general, the findings could also be useful in ongoing conservation efforts—helping experts to figure out which species need to be protected in order to ensure their survival.
“My research investigating the relationship between species and the variety of subspecies proves that subspecies play a vital role in long term evolutionary dynamics and in future evolution of species,” says biological anthropologist Laura van Holstein. There are three subspecies of northern giraffe, for example, and 45 subspecies of the red fox—the highest in the animal kingdom. 36 different species of wild cats have been found and most of these are further divided into subspecies. Human beings, on the other hand, don’t have any subspecies.
To test Darwin’s assumption, van Holstein looked at a huge database of animal classifications, analysing the collected knowledge we have about mammal species and subspecies to look for patterns. The data showed that habitat (land versus sea, for example) plays an important role in subspecies’ form and increase. The findings show that those living in the sea, or spending a lot of time in the air are less affected by physical boundaries like mountains.
The discoveries on subspecies habitat are particularly significant when it comes to conservation, because the habitats of so many animals are under threat from climate change and human activity, and these findings indicate that our actions are really having an effect on the process of evolution.
12. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Charles Darwin’s claims have been proved recently.
B. Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species.
C. Charles Darwin’s assumption was right for any animal.
D. Charles Darwin set up the foundation of evolution theory.
13. What can we infer from Laura van Holstein’s research?
A. Humans will evolve faster.
B. Northern giraffe’s evolution is less active.
C. The red fox needs immediate protection.
D. Wild cats’ subspecies are countless.
14. Which of the following animals’ subspecies may be less affected?
A. Dogs. B. Sharks. C. Monkeys. D. Snakes.
15. Why are the discoveries on subspecies habitat important?
A. Because they help solve the threat of climate change.
B Because they show human activity is bad for evolution.
C. Because they tell the importance of conservation of habitats.
D. Because they prove evolution is damaged by human actions.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. B 15. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究发现,亚种在物种未来进化中起着至关重要的作用,这一发现也告诉我们保护栖息地的重要性。
【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段关键句“This assumption is not as obvious as you might think at first. And it was finally found to be true for birds only a couple of years ago. Now, researchers from the University of Cambridge in the UK have shown that Darwin was right on this point for mammals (哺乳动物), too.”(这个假设并不像你一开始想象的那么明显。几年前,人们终于发现鸟类正是如此。现在,来自英国剑桥大学的研究人员已经表明,达尔文的主张在哺乳动物身上也是正确的。)可知,文章第一段内容主要告诉我们英国剑桥大学的研究人员已经表明,查尔斯·达尔文在《物种起源》一书中的声明被证明在哺乳动物身上也是正确的,由此可知,第一段的主要内容是查尔斯·达尔文的声明最近得到了证实。故选A项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段关键句““My research investigating the relationship between species and the variety of subspecies proves that subspecies play a vital role in long term evolutionary dynamics and in future evolution of species,” says biological anthropologist Laura van Holstein.”(生物人类学家劳拉·范·霍尔斯坦说:“我对物种和亚种多样性之间关系的研究证明,亚种在长期进化动力学和物种未来进化中起着至关重要的作用。”)可知,劳拉·范·霍尔斯坦的研究证明亚种在物种未来进化中起着至关重要的作用,也就是说,亚种数量越多,证明物种的进化越活跃;再结合第三段关键句“There are three subspecies of northern giraffe, for example, and 45 subspecies of the red fox—the highest in the animal kingdom. 36 different species of wild cats have been found and most of these are further divided into subspecies. Human beings, on the other hand, don’t have any subspecies.”(例如,北方长颈鹿有三个亚种,红狐有45个亚种,是动物界最高的。已发现36种不同种类的野猫,其中大多数被进一步分为亚种。另一方面,人类没有任何亚种。)可知,与其他物种相比,北方长颈鹿只有三个亚种,由此可知,它的进化并不活跃,综上所述,我们可以从劳拉·范·霍尔斯坦的研究中推断出北方长颈鹿的进化不那么活跃。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段关键句“The data showed that habitat (land versus sea, for example) plays an important role in subspecies’ form and increase. The findings show that those living in the sea, or spending a lot of time in the air are less affected by physical boundaries like mountains.”(数据显示,栖息地(例如陆地和海洋)在亚种的形成和增加中起着重要作用。研究结果表明,生活在海洋中或在空气中花费大量时间的物种受物理边界(如山脉)的影响较小。)可知,生活在海洋中或在空气中花费大量时间的物种受物理边界的影响较小,结合选项可知,只有鲨鱼是生活在海洋里的,由此可知,鲨鱼的亚种受影响较小。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段内容“The discoveries on subspecies habitat are particularly significant when it comes to conservation, because the habitats of so many animals are under threat from climate change and human activity, and these findings indicate that our actions are really having an effect on the process of evolution.”(亚种栖息地的发现在对自然环境的保护方面尤其重要,因为许多动物的栖息地都受到气候变化和人类活动的威胁,这些发现表明我们的行为确实对进化过程产生了影响。)可知,亚种栖息地的发现在对自然环境的保护方面尤其重要,因为这些发现表明我们的行为确实对进化过程产生了影响,让我们意识到保护栖息地的重要性,由此可知,亚种栖息地的发现很重要,因为它们告诉我们保护栖息地的重要性。故选C项。
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后选项中选出可填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Develop Positive Relationships
One of the most profound experiences we can have in our lives is the connection we have with other human beings. Positive and supportive relationships will help us to feel healthier, happier, and more satisfied with our lives. ____16____
●Accept and celebrate differences.
____17____ Yet when we try to build relationships, we expect that people will think like we do. In this way, it is so much easier to create a friendly relationship. However, while we may find it initially easier, the novelty of sameness soon would wear off. So accepting that we are all different is a great starting point.
●Listen effectively.
Listening is a crucial skill in boosting another person’s self-esteem.____18____In active listening, we also are genuinely interested in understanding what the other person is thinking, feeling, wanting, or what the message means, and we are active in checking out our understanding before we respond with our own new message. This process is what distinguishes active listening and makes it effective.
●____19____
In a world where time is of the essence, we don’t always have the time to give to our loved ones. Being present in the time you give to people is important. In other words, when you are with someone, you are truly with someone and not living in the past or worrying about the future. Devoting time, energy, and effort to building relationships is one of the most valuable life skills.
●Manage mobile technology.
By now, everyone has a mobile phone and many people have two or more. While they are a lifesaver in an emergency, and an effective tool for communication, they also can be a complete distraction when people exhibit a lack of mobile phone etiquette (礼仪).____20____
A. Give people your time.
B. Develop your communication skills.
C. We can perceive the world variously.
D. Active listening is the most useful listening skill.
E. So here are some tips to help you develop more positive relationships.
F. Pay attention to who you are with and answer the phone when necessary.
G. So technology has somewhat weakened our ability to build a good relationship.
【答案】16. E 17. C 18. D 19. A 20. F
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了发展积极的人际关系的四种方法。
【16题详解】

【17题详解】
本段介绍的是要接受人和人之间的不同。根据下文“Yet when we try to build relationships, we expect that people will think like we do.”(然而,当我们试图建立关系时,我们期望人们会像我们一样思考。)可知,该空内容与下文形成转折,人和人之间是不同的,那么人们对世界的认知也是不同的,但我们建立关系的时候,我们却希望其他人和我们想法一样。C选项“We can perceive the world variously.”(我们可以以不同的方式感知世界。)符合题意,故选C。
【18题详解】
本段介绍倾听的好处,根据上文“Listening is a crucial skill in boosting another person’s self-esteem.”(倾听是提升他人自尊的关键技能。)可知,倾听可以增强对方的自尊,而积极倾听是最有用的技巧。下文继续围绕“active listening”展开。D选项“Active listening is the most useful listening skill.”(积极倾听是最有用的听力技巧。)”符合题意,故选D。
【19题详解】
根据下文“Devoting time, energy, and effort to building relationships is one of the most valuable life skills.”(花时间、精力和努力去建立人际关系是最有价值的生活技能之一。)可知,本段介绍我们在和他人建立良好关系时要花时间。A选项“Give people your time.”(给别人你的时间。)”符合题意,故选A。
【20题详解】
根据上文“While they are a lifesaver in an emergency, and an effective tool for communication, they also can be a complete distraction when people exhibit a lack of mobile phone etiquette.”(在紧急情况下,手机是救星,是有效的沟通工具,但当人们缺乏使用手机的礼仪时,手机也会完全分散他们的注意力。)”可知,手机也会使我们在和他人交往时分心,显得不礼貌,该空应该讲建立人际关系时,如何正确使用现代通讯工具,F选项“Pay attention to who you are with and answer the phone when necessary.”(注意和你在一起的人,必要时接听电话。)符合题意,故选F。

【41题详解】
考查形容词性物主代词。句意:2020年8月27日,青岛农业大学生命科学学院的副教授赵明辉在网上发布了一则征婚启事,为他实验室里的猫寻求一只9个月大的猫做配偶。根据句子结构和意思可知,这里需要形容词性物主代词修饰后面的名词“cat”。故填his。

【43题详解】
考查名词。句意:至于对这只猫伴侣的要求,启示上说,伦敦腔的健康的英国长毛猫将会被放在候选者名单的最上面。根据句子结构和意思可知,此空要填名词。根据下一句“the post said that healthy British long-haired cats who can speak with a London accent would be put on the top of the candidates list.”可知,对这只猫的要求不止一条,应用可数名词复数,也可以整体视为一个要求,用单数,故填requirement(s)。

考查非谓语动词。句意:这是一只特殊的猫,是第一只出现在国内大学克隆实验室的猫。分析句子结构可知,one前有序数词修饰,用不定式作后置定语。故填to appear。
【45题详解】
考查时态、语态和主谓一致。句意:这只出生在12月24日的猫被称为平安,意味着和平和安全。分析句子结构可知,这里考查短语“refer to A as B”把A称之为B。根据句子意思这只猫被称之为平安,可知,这里要用被动语态。主语是“The clone”指这只猫,谓语be动词用单数。陈述客观事实,用一般现在时。故填is referred。
【46题详解】
考查时态和主谓一致。句意:在过去的9个月里,这只猫已经长到了成年阶段,也就是进入到了交配期,在此时它已经准备好有配偶了。句子中的时间状语Over the past nine months与现在完成时连用。主语是the cat,所以谓语动词要用单数形式。故填has grown。
【47题详解】
考查定语从句。句意同上。分析句子结构和意思可知,这是定语从句。先行词是the period of young adulthood,在定语从句中做时间状语。故填when。
