Recently, a junior high school sent several students back home because they broke the school uniform(校服)rules. Should students wear school uniforms? The Young World magazine held a discussion on this topic(话题).
Kennedy: The school uniform is very important, because it always reminds me that I am supposed to go out of my way to study hard. It also helps prevent school bullying(欺凌). If everyone wears the same clothes, it is impossible to laugh at other people’s clothing.
Manson: The uniform has to be earned(获得)through efforts. Students should start school with no uniforms. As they make progress at school, they start wearing it. I always think children need to be proud of their school. The uniform is important for that. So, make students earn it! If they don’t perform well, they should not be allowed to get one.
Moorhead: In my opinion, kids don’t have to wear uniforms. There should be more choices open to kids in education. They ought to develop their own independence and just be themselves. Their personalities would be expressed through their own clothes at school. And different dress could be one way of showing their understanding of beauty. Besides, they make the school lively and colorful.
Patrick: I can see the advantages of wearing school uniforms. They play a very important role in managing schools. However, a school should not depend heavily on uniforms to improve students’ behaviors. Teaching them how to express themselves with confidence(信心)is more important.

It is believed that Huck Finn is based on(基于)a childhood friend of Mark Twain’s. In fact, Twain was not alone in basing a fictional character(虚构的角色)on a real-life person.
Severus Snape / John Nettleship
Severus Snape is a skillful wizard(巫师)teaching magic in Harry Potter. The writer, J.K. Rowling, once said that the character was based on a teacher of hers.
The teacher turned out to be John Nettleship, who taught Rowling chemistry. At first, Nettleship felt surprised. “I know I am a strict teacher,” he said. “But I don’t think I am as bad as Snape!” On second thoughts, however, he said that he was so ill-tempered that most of his students avoided making him mad. Also, he used to wear long hair and have an untidy lab. That sounds familiar to Harry Potter fans.
Alice / Alice Liddell
Famously, Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is based on Alice Liddell.
Carroll was close to the Liddell family. One day, ten-year-old Alice asked Carroll to tell her a new story. Carroll began to create his famous tale of Alice and what happened after she fell through the rabbit hole. The little girl liked the story so much that she asked him to write it down. And the rest is history.
Dill / Truman Capote
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee based Dill on her childhood friend, Truman Capote. Capote once said, “Lee was my best friend. Have you ever read To Kill a Mockingbird? I’m a character in that story! The story takes place just in the town where we lived!”

On June 9th, 1870, Charles Dickens died at the age of 58. The next day, a headline in The New York Times read: “Death of the Great Novelist…Will Be Remembered by the People…”
The headline was not overstating (夸大) the popularity of Dickens. Even today, the British novelist is loved by readers all over the world. Dickens created some unforgettable characters. You must have heard of or even read some of his novels: Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities. A Tale of Two Cities has sold more than 200 million copies. Since 1897, there have been more than 300 film and TV adaptations(改编版本) of Dickens' works. A Christmas Carol alone has had nearly 50.
Natalie Mcknight is a literature professor(文学教投) who studies Dickens and his works. She explains why the novelist has remained so popular. One important reason, she says, is that Dickens wrote from his heart. He tried hard to produce emotional effects(情感效果) among his readers. In his works, he paid special attention to the "little man" at the bottom of society in the UK, which deeply mirrored the social reality at that time. A Christmas Carol, for example, was written to make every reader think about how they could make a difference to their society. People always enjoy works that make them laugh, cry and think. Many other 19th-century novelists wrote entertaining(娱乐的) works. However, few of them worked as hard as Dickens to touch the readers deeply.
Dickens wrote about situations and emotions that still interest people today. He used his pen to fight social inequality and gave voice to the poor. His works led to many important social changes. Readers always enjoy seeing poor people rise and succeed.
This year marks the 150thyear of Dickens' death. It's another chance to remember this great writer. Will you read or re-read some of his famous works?
21.What is Paragraph(段落)2 mainly about?
A.Personality of Dickens. B.Appearance of Dickens. C.Popularity of Dickens.

① meet the “little man” at the bottom of society in the UK
② know about the social reality at that time
③ not be influenced by the works at all
④ think about how to make a difference to their society
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④
24.What does the underlined word "inequality" mean in Paragraph 4?
A.不平等 B.不现实 C.不稳定

Have you ever seen a solar panel(太阳能电池板)in your neighborhood? Solar panels take energy from the sun and turn it into electricity. Over the past ten years, the price of solar panels has gone down greatly. In many parts of the world, solar energy is now the cheapest form of electricity. More and more people have started using solar energy to power(给……供电)their homes.
However, solar panels also have their problems. They stop working at night and on rainy days. Is it possible to make them produce electricity all of the time?
Scientists at Suzhou University, China, have invented a new solar panel now. It can produce electricity not only from solar energy but also from falling rain. When a raindrop falls on the solar panel and then rolls(滚动)down, it creates friction(摩擦力)on the surface of the panel, which can then be turned into electricity.
Sun Baoquan is one of the inventors. “Our new invention can produce electricity in any weather during the day,” he says. “It can even provide electricity at night if there is rain.”
The solar panel, however, does not make much electricity from falling rain. So Sun Baoquan is still working hard to improve it. The scientist also wants to make solar panels more flexible, which are as soft as clothing.
The field of solar energy is developing fast. Scientists around the world have been improving solar panels. Some have been working on ways to join solar panels and wind power together. Some have been trying to use sunlight to produce liquid and gas fuels(液体和气体燃料).
26.Which energy is now the cheapest form of electricity in many parts of the world?
A.Solar energy. B.Water energy. C.Wind energy.
27.What is one of the problems of common solar panels?
A.The price of them is rising.
B.They can’t work all of the time.
C.They can hardly power people’s homes.
28.Why is the new solar panel more scientific and useful?
A.It has a larger size than a common one.
B.It produces more electricity from falling rain than solar energy.
C.It can produce electricity day and night and even in rainy conditions.
29.What does the underlined word “flexible” mean in Paragraph 5?
A.柔软的 B.光滑的 C.坚硬的
30.We can infer(推断)from this text that ________.
A.there is no room for developing solar energy
B.there is no end to the research in the field of solar energy

(2021·湖南长沙·统考中考真题)From an early age, we were taught that if we wanted to be successful, we had to study hard and get good results at school. In fact, good students may just end up doing jobs they don’t like, and some even lead an unhappy life. Why is it like that?
In some parents’ eyes, school grades matter most for their kids. In reality, there are many things to consider besides the school subjects, for example, how to be a happy person, what to do to keep healthy, and how to get along well with others. That is to say, school is not just enough if you want to have a great life.
Doing well in school is different from doing well in life. Studies show that people who failed at school may not end up failing in life. You may have already known that some famous people, like Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs, didn’t do very well at school or even failed to finish school. In fact, there are a lot more than just the big shots who are successful in life without finishing school. They seize (抓住) every chance to learn and finally make it to the top.
Life is really a long lesson, so long that you can’t define (界定) a person’s success by just one section (部分) of it. If you have already finished school, keep learning because what you have learned at school will never be enough to live a satisfying life. If you are still studying, whether you are good or bad at school, don’t take your school results too seriously as long as you have put your heart into it. Keep learning to make the most of your talents (天赋). That’s how you can live a happy and successful life.
36.What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing Paragraph (段落) One?
A.To introduce a topic. B.To give examples. C.To provide a solution.
37.In some parents’ eyes, what’s the most important for their kids based on Paragraph Two?
A.Being happy. B.Staying healthy. C.Getting good grades.
38.What does the underlined expression “big shots” in the third paragraph mean?
A.好学生 B.神枪手 C.大人物
39.According to the passage, which sentence may agree with the writer’s idea?
A.It takes money to be successful. B.School grades aren’t everything. C.Successful people never finish school.
40.What can we infer (推断) from the text?
A.Old habits die hard. B.Learning is a lifelong journey. C.Good grades always promise a successful life.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the great works by Mark Twain. The book is so interesting. Even today, it is quite popular among kids. Although I am in my thirties, the book remains one of my favorites. After re-reading the book recently, I have learned an important lesson from Tom Sawyer.
In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring tasks. What’s in your mind when your mom tells you to clean the floor? Have you ever wanted to complain(抱怨)? I think most people have.
Tom Sawyer, however, thought “differently” when he was given a boring task. One Saturday morning, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence(篱笆). Tom’s friend Ben Rogers happened to walk past. Instead of complaining, Tom told Ben that he felt “excited” about the task. “Only one in a thousand—maybe even two thousand boys can do this!” Tom said.
Tom’s words made Ben interested in the task. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence. If Tom had thought about nothing but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the fence.
This story teaches me a valuable lesson: Complaining is useless. The next time you are given a boring or tiring task, don’t complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is unlikely that someone will come and do the work for you. However, without complaining, you’ll feel better and perhaps even do a better job!
51.Who is the writer of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?
A.Aunt Polly. B.Mark Twain. C.Ben Rogers.
52.According to the writer, what is most people’s immediate reaction(即时反应)to a boring task?
A.Complaining about it. B.Accepting it. C.Refusing it.
53.What did Aunt Polly ask Tom to do in this text?
A.Visit Ben. B.Clean the floor. C.Paint the fence.
54.Why did Tom say the underlined sentence to Ben in Paragraph 3?
A.To express his sadness. B.To catch Ben’s interest. C.To show his anger.
55.What does the writer learn from Tom Sawyer?
A.It is no use complaining. B.Refusing is the best choice. C.Waiting is the only way out.

Otters(水獭)are cute water animals. These days, keeping otters as pets is getting popular. In Japan, some “otter cafés(咖啡馆)” are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets.
However, these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage(损害)that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing many threats—they have long been hunted(猎杀)for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters.
In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers. When they are kept as pets by humans, they do not live full and natural lives.
Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners’ bathtubs(浴缸)or pools are nowhere near as large as the bodies of water in the wild.
On the other hand, otters simply don’t make good pets. They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noises and even attack(攻击)people. If a person is hurt by an otter, he or she needs to go to hospital at once.
So, we should stop the otter pet trade and never share photos and videos about them online.
56.What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A.The ways of buying otters online.
B.The advantages of playing with otters.
C.The popularity of keeping otters as pets.
57.What does the underlined word “threats” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.机遇 B.威胁 C.选择
58.What do we know about otters in the wild?
A.They live in family groups of up to 15.

a. They may attack people.

60.What is the writer’s main purpose of writing the text?
A.To tell people the otters’ living habits.
B.To teach people how to keep a pet otter.

(2023·湖南长沙·统考中考真题)It is commonly believed that children are too young to fully appreciate (欣赏) the experience and knowledge of their elders, while many think that old people don’t understand the young. But actually (事实上), both groups have a lot to learn from each other.
James Smith runs the Smith’s Care Home in my city. It is mainly an organization (机构) for serving the elderly. But not all of its visitors are old people. The home also includes a childcare center for pre-school kids. There is a playground in the care home, where the elderly can play with the kids. In this way, they can learn more about each other, and respect (尊重) and understand one another.
I suppose this is quite an interesting idea. For one thing, we live in a world where there are more and more old people. The world is facing this problem and its population ages. It will be important for young people to be able to understand and care for the elderly in the coming years.
Regretfully, my own grandparents weren’t around when I was little, as they had already passed away. I never got to learn what the world was like through their eyes, or what kinds of problems they might have faced when they were my age. To me, their lives will always be a mystery — hard to understand or explain.
However, I think I can still learn from other people of older generations (辈). I might find some of their ideas out of date, and they might believe that my generation’s way of thinking is strange or incorrect. But we can still learn from each other anyway.
71.What is special about the Smith’s Care Home?
A.It is only a childcare center actually.
B.The elderly look after kids carefully there.

A.There are more and more old people.

(2019·湖南长沙·中考真题)I am Canadian. I started learning French when I was 10 years old. But my whole experience with the language was in the classroom. All of that changed, however, during my last summer of high school. As a 17-year-old girl, I flew across the country by myself for the first time! I headed for Quebec to live in the province with a French-speaking host family, who didn’t speak any English. And I would learn French at a local school.
On the first day of school, all of us students were given a test to determine(测定)our language level. We were required to speak only French all summer.
I made every effort to communicate in a second language by making new friends, seeing movies and even ordering food from restaurants in French. Though I couldn’t understand most of it at the very beginning, the whole experience was exciting and refreshing.
On weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different places around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St. Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see huge whales swimming around our boat. The most memorable part of our trip was a visit to historic Quebec City. I walked along the stone streets, took pictures of the European-style(欧式的)buildings, and learned some stories there.
Finally my efforts paid off! At the end of the summer, I was able to communicate pretty well. I couldn’t wait to go back to school and talk with my French teacher. Being fully immersed(沉浸)in a French-speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. And it could be the main reason for my improvement in French.

Jiaozi, also known as Chinese dumplings, is a must-have during holidays in Northern China. It dates back to ancient times.

As an exchange student, I studied in France for two years. The first time I took a class in the chemistry lab, I was surprised to find that students were fully “armed”. Everyone was wearing goggles (护目镜) and gloves. Safety comes first for science lab class.
My chemistry teacher Mrs. Louise usually gave us the instruction paper the night before the lab class and let us read it. During the class, she first went over the steps and then put us into groups of two to do the experiments (实验). What was special was that for every lab class, Mrs. Louise changed everyone’s lab partner to make them work with different classmates.
The class was often filled with laughter and screams (尖叫). We once tried to burn the chemicals and watch the colors of the flames (火焰). Different chemicals produced different colors of flames, including bright orange and dark green. Many students in my class were surprised. “Wow! That’s so beautiful!” they screamed. Then they excitedly took pictures, posted them online and sent them to their friends. Mrs. Louise didn’t get angry with us at all for our “noises”. She herself even took photos with us!
After finishing an experiment, we had to write a lab report. If we had a big mistake in the experiment, we needed to analyze (分析) why it happened and what we should do to avoid it next time. The lab reports were very important. They made up around 25% of our term grade.

Dear Wang,
Great to hear you are coming to the USA! I do hope you can stop by and visit us in the Big Apple — a popular name for New York City. There are so many things to see and do here. It would take a lifetime to list them all: Chinatown, Wall Street, Central Park, to name only a few. But knowing you as I do, I’d suggest walking through Midtown Manhattan. It is very popular in the USA and just can’t be missed!
People often say that no visit to New York City is complete without a trip to Broadway! Broadway with its cafés, street performers(表演者)and colorful signs really represents New York’s loud spirit! As Broadway is the heart of the American theater industry, it’s at night when it truly comes alive. Broadway is well-known for its big theaters. They show Shakespeare, modern plays, dance shows or musicals — take your pick! With your love of singing and interest in drama(戏剧), I’d recommend(推荐)a musical. It’s a great and moving experience that I’m sure you would love — a bit like Peking opera! Many musicals are based on classic stories like Les Miserables or Peter Pan, and they might even inspire(激发)you to read the books, too!
My big news is that I am going to China on vacation this winter. I am looking for places of interest in China. Can you recommend some to me?
See you soon!

One day, a group of tourists from Australia climbed a large rock in the Central Park of New York City. They took pictures of one another with the high-rise buildings in the background. Like many other tourists, they didn’t realize that high in a nearby tree, there was something more worthy of attention: an eagle-owl (雕鸮) named Flaco.
Earlier that month, the bird Flaco made his great escape (逃跑) from the Central Park Zoo. The zookeepers then tried several times to catch him but were unsuccessful. He seemed to be in no hurry to return to the zoo.
Olga Torrey, a photographer, has been photographing animals in city parks for 12 years. Since Flaco escaped, Torrey has kept a close eye on him. She wondered if he would ever return to the zoo. “Once he gets a taste of freedom, I’m not sure...” she said.
Still, each day spent outside puts Flaco in danger. He might accidentally hit windows and get injured (受伤) while flying. Moreover, the eagle-owl lived his whole life in the zoo in the past. He may not be used to finding food on his own. And if he made a meal of a rat (耗子), it might harm his health—the rat might contain poison (含有毒物).
The zoo has had the workers carefully watch Flaco all the time, as they are worried about his safety. Has Flaco eaten anything today? Has he got injured today?
Well, another day of watching has now begun.
