津津有味
The beauty of“ scars”
“伤疤”之美
When we get badly injured, we are often left with sears on our bodies. This happens to trees as well. One type of “scar" on trees is a tree hole. In order to protect trees, people usually fill tree holes with cement and other materials. However, many people think that the look of grey cement on trees is ugly. It does not fit into the urban environment.
This winter, some artists were invited to decorate the trees on the streets of Hongkou district, Shanghai. They painted many cute animals, such as birds, cats and squirrels, in the tree holes. These little animals look as if they were living or hiding there. The paintings don't hurt the trees. Instead, they cover the holes and prevent the trees from losing water.
Thanks to the efforts of these artists, the natural “scars” of the trees have been turned into colourful works of art. These tree-hole paintings don't just beautify the streets. They also help raise people's awareness of environmental protection. They're the warm decoration in the cold season.
