Competition results aren’t the only thing generating Winter Olympics buzz right now — food is too! The Chinese food being served in the Olympic village has been one of the hottest topics on social media.
Tessa Maud, Snowboarding (USA)
First-time Olympian Tessa Maud wanted to try “everything” in Beijing and usually “ordered too much,” as she often said in her TikTok videos detailing her food tours.

The biathlete recently gave his followers a tour of the Olympic Village food hall and shared which food items he’s been enjoying eating.
Like Marino, Runnall is also a fan of the dumplings. And for a taste of the West, he goes for the KFC chicken sandwich, which is “always good”.
Tom Kuhnhackl, Ice hockey (Germany)

My mother-in-law left us an unexpected and priceless gift. After she died, my husband and his sister were going through the contents of her house when they discovered every letter that we had written her during our 46-year marriage. She also kept all the letters that my mother had written to her over the years.
During the pandemic (大流行病), I’ve had time to go through these letters. I read of our early married life, our struggle to have children and, especially, the progress of our three children from birth to adulthood. I began writing all these details for my children, and now they have details about when they were small. I discovered much that I had forgotten. To read the letters written by my mother to my husband’s mother is a gift. I wish that I had saved my mother’s letters to me, but now I have these letters that tell me things about my own mother that I never knew.
I come from a long line of letter writers and was trained to stay in touch with our parents. My grandparents loved to receive letters from across the ocean. When I was away on a student exchange in 1970, my mother told me that my grandfather kept my airmail letters in his shirt pocket and read them daily. Knowing this, I have tried my best to write to our two families regularly.
To all of you who write to me, I thank you. The handwritten word is a powerful tool of friendship; it connects us together. Perhaps I shall file them for my children so that they can read the events of our lives and know that they, too, were cherished. Keep writing to those you love. Those letters are our greatest gifts to each other.
4. What did the author do after she read the letters?
A. She started to write letters.
B. She read the letters to her children.
C. She asked her children to write letters regularly.

6. What is the power of handwritten words according to the article?
A. They help us record a person’s life.
B. They strengthen emotional exchanges.
C. They enable us to survive the pandemic.
D. They allow us to practice writing skills.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the article?
A. Written letters — a New Trend
B. Communication — a Useful Tool
C. Written Memories — a Priceless Gift
D. Mother-in-law — a Beloved Family Member

When I was away on a student exchange in 1970, my mother told me that my grandfather kept my airmail letters in his shirt pocket and read them daily. Knowing this, I have tried my best to write to our two families regularly.(我出身于一个经常写信的家庭,并被训练要与父母保持联系。 故选A。

C
“You can tune (为……调音) a piano, but you can’t tuna fish.” Upon reading the sentence, you’re either laughing, scratching your head or rolling your eyes. Welcome to the world of puns (双关语).
A pun is a form of wordplay that uses similar-sounding words or phrases for comic effect. For example, in the first sentence, the usage of “tuna” is a pun because it sounds like “tune a”. Of course, you can’t “tune a” fish, but it’s a clever way of using words in an unexpected way.
“They can be a demonstration of cleverness,” John Pollack. author of The Pun Also Rises (the title itself a pun based on Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises). “You’re relying on a person’s ability to analyze language, to understand the nuances (细微差别) and complexities of words. Puns show us how subjective meaning and its many layers can be packed into one word. That’s why for most of Western history, puns were a sign of high intellect. They were a tool, and they remain a tool, to pack more meaning into fewer words.”
Puns are used widely throughout popular culture in TV, movies, and campaigns and marketing. For example, the ice cream company Ben and Jerry’s regularly uses puns in their flavors, such as “Americone Dream”. The American animated comedy Bob’s Burgers uses puns in every episode from the title sequence, episode name and Bob’s burgers of the day— like the Poblano Picasso burger (a burger that uses poblano peppers named after the artist, Pablo Picasso) or Eggers Can’t Be Cheesers (an egg burger based on the saying, “Beggars can’t be choosers”).
You can try writing your own puns, but remember, don’t write with a broken pencil because it’s pointless.
8. Why does the author mention a pun at the beginning of the text?
A. To introduce the origin of puns. B. To help readers see what a pun is.
C. To show how confusing puns can be. D. To describe people’s reactions to puns.
9. What can we conclude from John Pollack’s words?
A. Puns help us analyze language.
B. Puns are popular with clever people.
C. Puns are usually presented in complex forms.
D. Puns make use of different meanings of words.
10. How is paragraph 4 developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By making a classification. D. By drawing a conclusion.
11. In the last paragraph, the author wants to ______.
A. give a warning B. ask for advice
C. offer suggestions D. show comic effect

根据“You can tune (为……调音) a piano, but you can’t tuna fish.” Upon reading the sentence, you’re either laughing, scratching your head or rolling your eyes. Welcome to the world of puns 可知,作者是为了借助puns讲解双关语;以及第二段第一句“A pun is a form of wordplay that uses similar-sounding words or phrases for comic effect.(双关语是一种文字游戏,使用发音相似的单词或短语来达到喜剧效果)”可知,作者是为了帮助读者弄懂puns的用法。
根据原文John Pollack的话“They can be a demonstration of cleverness,(这些表明使用者很聪明)”以及“You’re relying on a person’s ability to analyze language, to understand the nuances (细微差别) and complexities of words. Puns show us how subjective meaning and its many layers can be packed into one word. That’s why for most of Western history, puns were a sign of high intellect. They were a tool, and they remain a tool, to pack more meaning into fewer words.(你依靠一个人的语言分析能力,如了解细微差别复杂性。双关语向我们展示了如何将主观意义和它的许多层次整合到一个词中。这就是为什么在西方历史的大部分时间里,双关语是高智商的标志。它们曾经是,现在仍然是,用更少的词表达更多的意思的工具。)”可知,双关语的特性是用更少的词表达更多的意思。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Puns are used widely throughout popular culture in TV, movies, and campaigns and marketing. For example……(双关语在电视、电影、活动和市场营销等流行文化中广泛使用。例如……)”可知,作者接下来要通过举例子的方法讲解双关语在文化中的使用。故选A。
根据“You can try writing your own puns, but remember, don’t write with a broken pencil because it’s pointless.(你可以试着自己写双关语,但记住,不要用断铅笔写,因为那毫无意义)”可知作者利用pointless(无意义/没有笔尖)这个词给读者一个一语双关的遐想,达到了幽默的效果。故选D。
D
Imagine a world without insects. It might sound good at first without creepy-crawly bugs and annoying flies in your apartment. However, the consequences would be disastrous.
The number of insects has dropped by more than half in the past decades, according to British biologist Dave Goulson, author of Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse. As insects make up most of the known species on this planet, this data is not good news.
Insects are indeed on the path to extinction, according to the first global scientific review of insect population decline, which was published in the journal Biological Conservation in January 2019. The researchers say intensive agriculture has been the main cause of the decline. Pesticides (杀虫剂), in particular, destroy insect habitats. Urbanization and climate change are also significant factors. “Unless we convert our ways of producing food, insects will go down the path of extinction in a few decades.”
What would happen to Earth without insects? It’s almost impossible to predict, but the consequences would be far—reaching. We need insects to pollinate (授粉) crops, recycle plant and animal material, keep the soil healthy and much more. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat, and the predators (捕食者) of those animals would go hungry as well. The ecosystem would be thrown off balance.
“If insect species losses cannot be halted, this will have catastrophic consequences for both the planet’s ecosystems and for the survival of mankind,” said Sanchez-Bayo, one of the authors of the review. The first step to halt this process is “to engender a society that values the natural world, both for what it does for us and for its own sake”, Sanchez—Bayo suggests. “The obvious place to start is with our children, encouraging environmental awareness from an early age.”
12. What’s people’s general impression of insects?
A. Quite unpleasant. B. Very interesting.
C. Extremely helpful. D. Unexpectedly disastrous.
13. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Change. B. Abandon. C. Expand. D. Simplify.
14. Why are insects so important to Earth according to this article?
A. Insects ensure the earth’s diversity.
B. Insects maintain the earth ecosystem.
C. Insects make the soil dry and healthy.
D. Insects help slow down climate change.
15. What can we do to stop insect species losses according to Sanchez-Bayo?
A. Exploit nature in a gentle way.
B. Change our way of producing food.
C. Educate younger generation to be aware of it.
D. Provide insects with enough habitats and food.
A 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据“Imagine a world without insects. It might sound good at first without creepy-crawly bugs and annoying flies in your apartment.(想象一个没有昆虫的世界。一开始可能听起来不错,公寓里没有令人毛骨悚然的虫子和恼人的苍蝇)”可知,虫子给人的印象是毛骨悚然以及恼人即人们讨厌这些虫子。故选A。
根据“The researchers say intensive agriculture has been the main cause of the decline. Pesticides (杀虫剂), in particular, destroy insect habitats. Urbanization and climate change are also significant factors.(研究人员表示,集约化农业是造成昆虫灭绝的主要原因。特别是农药,破坏昆虫的栖息地。城市化和气候变化也是重要因素)”可知,昆虫灭绝的原因之一:农业上杀虫剂的使用,以及下文“Unless we convert our ways of producing food, insects will go down the path of extinction in a few decades.(除非我们________生产食物的方式,否则昆虫将在几十年内灭绝)”,根据unless(除非)以及下文“our ways of producing food(我们生产粮食的方式))”可知,减少或不使用农药可以避免昆虫灭绝,即在农业方式——粮食生产方式做出改变。故选A。
根据“We need insects to pollinate (授粉) crops, recycle plant and animal material, keep the soil healthy and much more. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat, and the predators (捕食者) of those animals would go hungry as well. The ecosystem would be thrown off balance.(我们需要昆虫授粉(授粉)作物,回收植物和动物材料,保持土壤健康等等。没有昆虫,许多动物将没有吃的,食肉动物(捕食者)的动物也会挨饿。生态系统将失去平衡)”可知,昆虫在农业上帮助授粉,保持土壤健康,为捕食者提供食物,如果没有昆虫,整个生态链会受影响。故选B。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据“The obvious place to start is with our children, encouraging environmental awareness from an early age.( 很明显,我们应该从孩子开始,从小就鼓励他们有环保意识)”可知Sanchez—Bayo的建议是从儿童教育做起,提高人们的环保意识。
Many find it easy to fall asleep during a long bus trip. But why? ____16____ The first of them is a noise called white noise, which is a type of noise produced by combining sounds with different frequencies together. Buses are often crowded every day with people going to and from work. ____17____ They produce consistent noises, like the hum of tires or the purring (嗡嗡声) of the engine.
Another popular view on why it’s easy to fall asleep on buses is because of the rocking motion. “The motion of buses resembles a mother swaying a baby in her arms.” Frankie Chow, founder of Ulu Travel Agency, told The Washington Post. However, it’s not exactly the rocking movement that induces sleep. ____18____ If you were rocked to sleep as a baby, you’d associate that rocking motion with going to sleep.
____19____ Hence, long period of inactivity slows your brain activity down because there’s no stimulus to keep it awake. You just sit down and enjoy the scenery as the vehicle moves along the road. Basically, you’re away from the things that keep your mind and your physical body busy.
With a continuous stream of passengers getting on the bus, the oxygen on the bus will get thinner. ____20____ This reduces oxygen to the brain and slows it down, causing people to feel sleepy.
A. Here are a few tips to help you stay awake.
B. Fresh air is necessary for every human being.
C. On buses, you don’t move around very much.
D. According to a survey, there are several possible reasons.
E. Rather, it’s the association between rocking and sleeping.
F. Therefore, they are the perfect environment for such noise.
G. Carbon dioxide increases when there are lots of people in a small place.
D 17. F 18. E 19. C 20. G
根据“Many find it easy to fall asleep during a long bus trip. But why?(许多人发现在长途汽车旅行中很容易睡着。但是为什么呢?)”,以及第二段首句“The first of them is a noise called white noise, which is a type of noise produced by combining sounds with different frequencies together. (第一种是白噪声,它是一种由不同频率的声音组合而成的噪声)”可知,这里为承上启下句,引出下文解释人们在长途旅行中容易睡着的原因。D项“According to a survey, there are several possible reasons. (根据一项调查,有几个可能的原因)”符合语境。故选D。
【17题详解】
根据“Buses are often crowded every day with people going to and from work.(公共汽车每天都很拥挤,人们上下班)”以及“They produce consistent noises, like the hum of tires or the purring (嗡嗡声) of the engine.(它们产生一致的声音,像轮胎的嗡嗡声或引擎的嗡嗡声呼噜声)”可知,拥挤的人群以及引擎的噪音,构成了汽车上的噪音环境。 F项“Therefore, they are the perfect environment for such noise.(因此,他们是这种噪音的完美环境)”符合语意。故选F。
根据“However, it’s not exactly the rocking movement that induces sleep.(然而,并不是摇晃的运动导致了睡眠)”以及下句“If you were rocked to sleep as a baby, you’d associate that rocking motion with going to sleep.(如果你像婴儿一样被摇晃着入睡,你会把摇晃的动作与入睡联系起来)”可知,两句是完全相反的观点。E项“Rather, it’s the association between rocking and sleeping(相反,它是摇晃和睡眠之间的联系)”。
根据“Hence, long period of inactivity slows your brain activity down because there’s no stimulus to keep it awake.(因此,长时间的不活动会减缓你的大脑活动,因为没有刺激让它保持清醒)”,由Hence(因此)可知,此处在讲述长时间不活动的场景,继而描述结果。C项“On buses, you don’t move around very much.(在公共汽车上,你不会经常走动)”符合语意,故选C。
根据最后一段首句“With a continuous stream of passengers getting on the bus, the oxygen on the bus will get thinner.(随着不断有乘客上车,车上的氧气会越来越稀薄)”以及下句“This reduces oxygen to the brain and slows it down, causing people to feel sleepy.(这会减少向大脑输送的氧气并使其减慢,导致人们感到困倦)”可知,伴随着二氧化碳增加导致长途车上氧气减少。选项G“Carbon dioxide increases when there are lots of people in a small place.(当很多人聚集在一个小地方时,二氧化碳就会增加)”符合语意。

From the first day he entered my classroom, Willard P. Frank existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me. My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference. I could see that his classmates fared no better. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district.
“Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.”
When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P. Frank. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container.
“I don't need milk for lunch,” he mumbled. For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.
That night, after school, I took our few contributions to the school principal. I couldn't help sharing the incident that had taken place.
“I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal.
“Yes.” he nodded. “And we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.”
As I gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P. Frank and his family were the top names on the list. Seeing this, I decided to do something for him.
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为100左右;

On that Sunday, I paid a visit to Willard' s family.

Paragraph 1:
On that Sunday, I paid a visit to Willard's family. On entering his house, I was surprised to find a barely empty room with a broken bed and a dirty sofa. Willard told me his mother died and that his father was missing, leaving him to live with a sick grandma. When asked why he had given the two quarters, Willard mumbled, “ I just want to help others by contributing my milk money.” I couldn't help bursting into tears, thinking I should help him break his silence.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, I had a special class for Willard. I shared his story with the whole class and said, “Now, on behalf of the people in need, I should say thanks to Willard, you are great! ” After a silence, all the students clapped, saying “Willard, you are great! ” and they walked to him and hugged him tightly. A friendly relationship was built and Willard's silence was broken by a smile on his face.
