Ngoc Anh knows the value of trees. Years ago, he worked as a logger. He cut trees down illegally and sold them for money.

But very heavy rainfall and floods increasingly damaged his community in the central province of Quang Binh. The 36-year-old Ngoc started learning about the climate and natural crises. He changed his job and became involved in tourism and environmental conservation.

Now, Ngoc Anh is one of 250 former loggers to receive training from a tourism company. He works as a travel guide. He usually leads foreign tourists through forests and into some of the world’s largest caves in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

“Whenever I saw a large tree, my head used to calculate how tall the tree was and how to cut it into logs of different sizes,” Ngoc Anh said. “But now when I see such a tree, I will tell the tour group how valuable it is because there aren’t many left.”

Global Forest Watch estimated that the country had lost about 3 million hectares of forest from 2001 to 2020. That was a 20 percent diminution in 20 years. The losses were mostly driven by logging.

In 2007, the government started taking more measures to prevent illegal logging, which has helped slow the rate of deforestation.

Together with a park official, Ngoc Anh and other tour guides help guard the trails to keep poachers (偷猎者) away. They remove animal traps and clean up any waste.

Nowadays, Ngoc works for less than half the money he earned before as a logger. But he hopes to earn more as the tourism recovers.

    24. Why did Ngoc cut trees years ago?

    A. To make a living.  B. To make the most of trees.

    C. To take advantage of the law. D. To improve the housing conditions.

    25. What’s the attitude of Ngoc Anh towards the trees now?

    A. Doubtful. B. Protective. C. Cautious. D. Uncaring.

    26. What does the underlined word “diminution” in paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A. Growth. B. Addition. C. Decrease. D. Production.

    27. What do tour guides do besides guiding tourists?

    A. They prevent illegal hunting.

    B. They rescue animals in danger.

    C. They urge tourists to protect animals.

    D. They create a clean environment for animals.

    C

The golden eagle—a large, powerful bird—is at the center of an effort to balance environmental protection and energy in the United States. Government policy protects golden eagles. But it also supports the building and growth of wind farms. Wind farms are groups of huge windmills that produce electricity from the wind. The problem is that windmills are often responsible for killing golden eagles.

Wyoming is a state where many golden eagles live. It is also home to a lot of large wind farms. Bryan Bedrosian is the conservation director at the Teton Raptor Center in Wilson, Wyoming. He said, “We have some of the best golden eagle populations in Wyoming, but it doesn’t mean the population is not at risk.” He added, “As we develop wind energy across the U. S., that risk is increasing.”

Golden eagles do not reproduce until they are about five years old. They have one baby bird or chick every two years. As a result, adult eagle deaths have large effects on the population, Bedrosian said.

USGS scientists said in a recent study that increased turbine-caused(涡轮机导致的) deaths could cut golden eagle populations almost in half over ten years. That could happen if wind energy continues to grow, the scientists predicted. But the lead writer of the study, Jay Diffendorfer, said no population-wide decreases have been seen in recent years.

Climate change is also a great threat to golden eagles. The National Audubon Society warns rising temperatures could reduce golden eagle breeding areas by more than 40 percent within about 80 years. The federal government estimates that the shootings without permission by law kill about 700 golden eagles each year. More than 600 die each year in crashes with cars, wind turbines and power lines. About 500 are electrocuted(触电致死) and more than 400 are poisoned.

Brian Millsap, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s eagle program, said, “This sounds crass(愚蠢而无同情心的) but it’s realistic. Eagles are going to be incidentally killed at wind farms. We’ve got to reduce other things that will allow wind energy development.”

    28. What may be the major conflict in Wyoming according to Bryan Bedrosian?

    A. Saving eagles and keeping their living habits.

    B. Protecting the environment and collecting energy.

    C. Developing the economy and building wind farms.

    D. Protecting golden eagles and developing wind energy.

    29. Why do adult eagle deaths affect their population deeply?

    A. The reproductive rate is low.

    B. They have a relatively short life.

    C. Young eagles can’t protect themselves.

    D. Young eagles can’t find natural habitats.

    30. What can we infer about the prediction from paragraph 4?

    A. It might not be correct.  B. It turned out to be a fact.

    C. It may be based on imagination. D. It’s absolutely different from reality.

    31. What is the most possible cause of golden eagles’ deaths according to paragraph 5?

    A. Traffic crash.  B. Climate change.

    C. Illegal shootings.  D. Poisonous foods.

    D

Researchers say they have discovered new evidence that Mars once had a large northern ocean. The finding adds to existing evidence that ancient Mars had the right conditions to possibly support some form of life.

Today, Mars has a cold, desert climate. Any water is believed to be in the form of ice because of the planet’s extremely cold temperatures. But there is a rich amount of evidence suggesting that rivers, lakes and even oceans once existed on Mars. For example, a 2015 study by the American space agency NASA suggested that 4.3 billion years ago, Mars likely had an ocean that covered nearly half of Mars’ northern hemisphere(半球).

Another NASA-supported study, published in January, estimated that 3 billion years ago, the climate in much of the planet’s northern hemisphere bore a striking likeness to the present Earth. The study noted that at the time, Mars likely had a much thicker air than today and had an active, northern ocean.

Now, two American researchers have announced a set of maps, which provide new environmental evidence of a large ancient ocean on Mars’ low-lying northern hemisphere.

The scientists say the ridges(山脊) likely represent the leftover evidence of eroded(被侵蚀的) river systems and an ancient ocean floor. The team said its research also suggested the existence of remains, providing further evidence of a large ocean.

Cardenas added that areas on our own planet containing water-formed ridges and remains provide researchers with much useful information about an area’s climate and life forms. “If scientists want to find a record of life on Mars, an ocean as big as the one that once covered Aeolis Dorsa would be the most reasonable place to start,” he said.

In addition to providing more evidence of a large ocean, Cardenas suggested the new study also provides useful information on Mars’ ancient climate and developmental history. “Based on these findings, we know there must have been a period when it was warm enough and the atmosphere was thick enough to support this much liquid water at one time,” he said.

    32. What was once similar to the present Earth in the ancient times for Mars?

    A. Its climate. B. Its structure. C. Its speed. D. Its creatures on it.

    33. How did the scientists draw their conclusion?

    A. They drew the ancient oceans on Mars.

    B. They found the lost waters of the ancient ocean.

    C. They discovered signs left by the ancient sea.

    D. They found evidence by studying areas on earth.

    34. What made liquid water exist on Mars?

    A. Temperature changes.  B. Warm environment.

    C. Regular rains.  D. Extreme weather.

    35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. Warning from Present State of Mars

    B. History of Climate Development on Mars

    C. Secrets of Life on Mars Discovered

    D. New Evidence of a Large Ancient Ocean on Mars

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

    How to Grow, Eat Sunflowers

Sunflowers are huge plants with bright yellow flowers. They have a long history in North America. There is evidence that they were used for food and medicine by Native Americans beginning around 1000 B. C.

    How to Grow

If you start growing sunflowers from seeds, put them in room-temperature water for 2—8 hours before planting to start the growing process.    36    Plant them after the danger of frost has passed. Choose a place outside that will provide the plants with at least 6—8 hours of direct sunlight each day.

As the plants grow, they will develop long roots that work their way deep into the ground.    37    Dig at least one third of a meter down and remove any rocks.

Mix a large amount of compost(堆肥) into the soil where the plant will grow. Compost provides important, lasting nutrients that will help the plants all seasons long.

    How to Eat

To gather the seeds, wait until the plants die back and the flowers start to fall at the end of the season.    38   Cut the flowers off the plants. Then, put them into a bag or container to avoid spilling(洒落) the seedswhich will be loose.

39    Do this over a container. Wash the seeds with water. Set them out to dry overnight.

Sunflower seeds may be eaten cooked or uncooked. To roast the seeds, you need an oven. Set the temperature to 165 degrees Celsius. Once the oven is heated, cook the seeds until they are brown.    40    Boil them in hot salted water for 90 minutes to two hours. Let them dry and then roast them in the oven. Thus, you can make salted seeds.

    A. Water the plants when the soil dries.

    B. The seeds will start coming out of the head.

    C. The process takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

    D. Get ready to provide about 2.5 centimeters of water a week.

    E. As a result, before planting, it is important to loosen the soil.

    F. Remove the seeds by rubbing flowers with your hands or a hard brush.

    G. Plant each seed into dirt 2.5 centimeters deep and 15 to 30 centimeters apart.

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My aunt needed a dog walker, and I needed the money. I was thirteen.

Every day after school, I ran joyfully over to my aunt’s apartment. After a lot of tail-shaking and wet kissing, Fetch, a retriever(搜救犬) and I would go for a walk.

On our walks, we’d see the neighbor’s cat, Droopy. He must have known our walking route because he was always sitting in the window next door, as if waiting for us. Fetch would drag me to the window to frighten the cat with her loud bark. Droopy would let out hissing(嘶嘶声), hit the dog in his window and escape inside the house.

One day, Droopy was nowhere to be seen. Fetch ran to the window, expecting a good fight as usual, but no cat. Thankfully, we’d avoid a scene today, I thought. We continued our walk. I found several kids gathered around a sewer(下水道). Getting closer, I could see Droopy sitting below. Though the kids hanging around the sewer kept trying to reach him, their arms weren’t long enough, and he kept pulling away in fright. Fetch also saw Droopy and began to bark at him.

Suddenly, it started to rain hard. In what seemed like a few seconds, I could see Droopy’s little feet almost covered in water. As a last way, I lay down madly on the sidewalk and stuck my head and arms into the sewer, reaching for the cat. This frightened him even more, and he pulled farther away.

Meanwhile, Fetch’s barking kept getting louder. When she saw me on the ground reaching into the sewer, I guess she thought I was in danger. So she went into protective mode, trying to rescue me. Quickly, I pulled myself out of the hole, but she took my place, pushing her head and half her body into the sewer. I tried to keep her from falling into the hole. No way was I going to lose the best dog I had ever known.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式作答。

Everyone came up to lend a hand. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Since then, the walk has been the same as before but different.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hopefully, I’d be grateful if you could offer me the opportunity. Looking forward to your early reply.

    Yours sincerely,

    第二节

    One possible version:

Everyone came up to lend a hand. I struggled to catch the dog and, with everyone’s help, we managed to pull her to safety. And then we saw a beautiful sight: In Fetch’s mouth, hanging by the back of his neck, was Droopy. The cheers from the kids for Fetch and Droopy could be heard blocks away. Fetch let go of the cat. Droopy rubbed his face against the dog, briefly forgetting their past differences. Fetch barked in appreciation as if she had been chosen Best at the biggest Dog Show in the world.

Since then, the walk has been the same as before but different. Each time we go walking, Fetch still stops by Droopy’s window after that adventure. They wave their tails and greet each other in a more friendly way. I think they have gained a common respect for each other, and they go for a walk, play happily together and become good friends as well.
