The 2023 Nbel Prize in Physilgy r Medicine has been awarded t Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman fr their wrk n mRNA vaccines (疫苗), a crucial tl in hlding back the spread f COVID-19.
Karikó,68, is frm Hungary. In the 1970s, she began studying a new area f research: messenger RNA (mRNA). mRNA is a special mlecule (分子) which carries instructins that tell cells what prteins t make. Prteins are ne f the building blcks f life. They’re invlved in almst every prcess in living things, frm fighting diseases t building muscles t helping ur bdies wrk. Karikó was excited abut the idea that mRNA culd be used t help the bdy fight many different diseases.
In 1985, Karikó mved t America t cntinue her research. In 1989, she jined the University f Pennsylvania (UPenn) in Philadelphia as a scientist. But as time went n, the initial excitement surrunding mRNA research started t disappear, and ther scientists thught it was t financially risky t fund. Karikó had truble getting mney fr her research. She even gt a pay cut frm the schl. What’s wrse, at this time, she suffered frm cancer. But she stuck at it.
Karikó gt t knw anther UPenn scientist, Drew Weissman in the late 1990s while phtcpying research papers. He was hping t find a way t create a vaccine fr a disease knwn as HIV. The tw began talking and sn decided t wrk tgether.
One f the biggest prblems in using mRNA as a medicine was that the human bdy saw mRNA as an enemy and fught it ff. Tgether, they came up with an apprach t treating mRNA.In 2005, they published their key discvery: mRNA culd be changed and delivered effectively int the bdy t activate (激活) the bdy’s prtective immune system. Thanks t their wrk, cmpanies were able t develp mRNA vaccines far mre quickly than ever befre, which have saved millins f lives arund the wrld.

The “biggest mistake” in wrkplace cmmunicatin—and the hardest ne t recver frm—is sending emtinal emails, says Brandn Smith, wh is knwn as the Wrkplace Therapist (治疗师). “It’s a really, really hard skill t master—mst peple dn’t crrect it until their 30s r 40s—but yu shuld never send an email when yu’re feeling extremely emtinal,” says Smith. “Peple treat emails r ther nline cmmunicatin like a casual (随意的) cnversatin yu’re having in the hallway, but it’s nt.” Instead, yu shuld“email like it culd ne day be read alud in curt,” he adds.
Next time yu get an email r nline message that makes yu feel angry, anxius r even pleased, what shuld yu d? Yu can write a draft, and then wait 24 hurs. This apprach satiates the immediate need t blw ff emtinal steam and express yur emtins withut hurting yur reputatin at wrk. “When yu have a strng emtinal reactin t smething, thse emtins will unavidably cme thrugh in whatever message yu’re typing,” says Smith. “It’s s much easier t make an issue wrse than slve ne ver email.”
When yu make a reply, re-read yur draft as if yu were the recipient: Is the message cnfusing? Are there any details that culd be misinterpreted, r that sund emtinal? If yu’re still nt cnfident in yur respnse, Smith recmmends asking a c-wrker t read it ver, as a secnd pinin can help yu identify areas f imprvement.
If smething requires a mre immediate respnse, ask the ther persn if yu can cntinue the cnversatin ffline. Phne calls play a mre imprtant rle in building emtinal cnnectin. Vice-based cmmunicatin (such as phne calls) create s strnger bnds than text-based cmmunicatin (such as emails). Or, as Smith explains, “Yu’ll be less willing t be rude t the ther persn when yu’re in cnversatin with them, r listening t their vice n the end f the line than yu wuld be ver text.”
( )28.What des Smith think f sending an email?
A.It shuld be cnsidered seriusly. B.It’s an unavidable wrkplace behavir.

A recent breakthrugh in battery technlgy culd affect the electric vehicle (EV).
Right nw it can take up t 10 hurs t fully charge an EV. There has lng been a debate abut the best times t charge an electric vehicle because f the amunt f time it takes. In recent years, manufacturers are racing t create ptins that cut this prcess dwn greatly. The team, led by Prfessr Wn Bae Kim f Phang University f Science and Technlgy in Suth Krea, is develping a new ande (阳极) material that can charge an electric vehicle very quickly.
The ande materials are knwn fr their exceptinal lithium-in (锂离子) strage capacity. By enlarging the surface area f the ande materials, scientists enabled a large number f lithium-ins t mve at the same time, resulting in significantly-imprved charging speed. Experimental result s demnstrated that a battery with a capacity that equals thse used in current EVs can be fully charged in just six minutes.
The research hlds the ptential t significantly increase the energy density f lithium-in batteries thrugh the incrpratin (合并) f high-capacity ande materials, thereby extending the driving range f electric vehicles. Ande materials culd ptentially increase the driving range at least by ten times.
The develpment hlds great prmise fr the future f electric vehicles, making them mre efficient fr everyday use. With faster charging times, the barrier t adpting electric vehicles culd be significantly reduced, paving the way fr a greener and mre sustainable transprtatin system. This grundbreaking research pens drs t further advancements in battery technlgy and marks a significant step frward in the jurney tward a cleaner, electric-pwered future. B.EVs can g 10 times faster than they d nw.
C.Ande materials’ surface area affects charging speed.
D.EVs’ driving range isn’t necessarily decided by batteries.
( )34.What is the authr’s attitude twards the future develpment f EVs?
    A.Wrried. B.Psitive. C.Dubtful. D.Uncertain.
( )35.What’s the best title fr the text?

W: Human beings speak arund 7,000 languages. Hwever, mst cmmunicatin happens in a small number f widely spken nes. The spread f internatinal cmmn languages makes cmmunicatin easier, but it als means that sme rarer languages are in danger f dying ut. Many times, the cultures that spke these languages have been held dwn, and children d nt learn the language f their parents and grandparents.
Currently, there are abut 2,000 languages in the wrld with fewer than 1,000 native speakers each. If nthing changes, arund 3,500 languages are expected t die ut by 2100.
T help preserve and prtect these threatened languages, sme are turning t technlgy. Cmputers can help create nline knwledge banks fr a language. Many native speakers f endangered languages are elderly, and there is a danger that when each ne f them dies, a huge amunt f knwledge will leave the wrld frever. Peple trying t save minrity languages are creating “Talking dictinaries”, made up f audi tapes r vides f peple speaking them. This way, the elders f a cmmunity can save the crrect sunds f the language and nt just the written frm. Peple are als creating websites where speakers can use their language t cmmunicate even if they dn’t live near each ther. Everyday use like this is an imprtant part f keeping these cultural treasures alive.

    One pssible versin:
Then I saw a university student with whm I talked abut my experience. I said I was ging t have a shwer withut using sap, g t bed withut supper and even have n breakfast the next mrning. He explained with a disarming air f cmpassin that the shps in Germany clsed earlier than thse in the USA r Malaysia. But he didn’t leave it at that and tk me back t his hme.
At his hme, I fund that he did nt pssess much. But he was willing t share what he had with a pr freigner wandering the streets f his city. Nt nly did he share his supper with me but he cut ff half his bar f sap with a knife s that I’d be able t shwer cmfrtably. He als gave me cheese and bread fr breakfast the next mrning! His kind deed inspired me t fllw suit. Whenever I see smene in need in my daily life, I will be willing t lend a hand.
