Everyone needs it, but no one wants to ask for it. “Help” has become a sort of dirty word, implying weakness and neediness, that we can’t handle our problems on our own. However, whether it is for your physical, mental or academic health, getting words of advice or encouragement from an outside-source can make all the difference.

During a time of such uncertainty, the frequency of people requesting help for anxiety and depression has increased. The current situation has made people realize that asking for help from professionals is the best way to get their problems off their chests and their minds on the road to wellness.

Still, requesting help carries a societal weight. The British Psychology Society found that two types of stigmas (耻辱) exist: public stigma and self stigma. A “public stigma” is external, a collection of beliefs from around us, which holds a heavy weight on our ideas on seeking help. A “self stigma” is internal, assigning ourselves labels based on our state of mental health, claiming we are worthless and undeserving of help. “Public” and “self” stigmas go hand in hand, and when we hear the stigmas being voiced by those around us, we tend to apply them to ourselves because of social influences.

To be our better selves, we have to break the stigma around “help” and accept the fact that some problems are too tough to overcome on our own. If we fail relevant necessity of getting ourselves assistance in times of need. Despite what society may tell us, it’s not odd or wrong to get help it’s probably one of the most insightful and courageous things we can do for ourselves.

Each one of us should be able to openly admit that we need help. Sometimes we need support, and that isn’t bad it’s healthy, and remarkably brave.

    24. Why is “help” considered a dirty word?

    A. It has bad impacts on our health.

    B. It makes us confused by an outside source.

    C. It prevents us from handling our problems.

    D. It implies our inability to solve problems alone.

    25. What can we know about two types of stigmas according to Paragraph 3?

    A. We can’t ignore the two stigmas.

    B. Public stigma weighs over self stigma.

    C. We are easily affected by public stigma.

    D. The two stigmas are based on mental health.

    26. What is the benefit of breaking the stigma around “help”?

    A. Improving ourselves. B. Becoming more confident.

    C. Facing problems bravely. D. Overcoming problems by ourselves.

    27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Help: A Dirty Word        B. Help: Feel Free to Seek It

    C. Help: A Way to Better Us D. Help: Keep a Distance from It

    C

Mining rare-earth (稀土) elements (REEs) has long been considered a dirty business, as it can lead to water and soil pollution, but a new technology developed by Chinese scientists may change the trend, offering a greener alternative for the industry.

REEs, especially heavy ones, are an essential part of many high-tech devices, from the engines of electric cars and smartphones, to LED lights. More than 90% of the global heavy REE demand is sourced from ion-absorption deposits (离子吸附沉积物), which form within weathering crusts (硬壳). However, conventional mining applies overmuch usage of chemical agents to recover REEs from these deposits, not only exhibiting low efficiency but also polluting the environment.

Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry proposed a new approach in the journal Nature Sustainability earlier this month, showing that employing electrokinetic mining techniques to extract (提取) REEs from weathering crusts can be both clean and efficient. Using this approach, researchers generated an electric field by putting electrodes (电极) on the top and bottom of a volume of soil. The electrokinetic effect can speed up the migration of REEs, reducing the need for harmful chemical agents.

To evaluate the practicality of the new method, they carried out several experiments of different scales. Results suggested that the new method outperformed traditional mining techniques. For instance, the scaled-up experiments achieved a recovery efficiency of 96% within 67 hours by using electrokinetics. Using the conventional technique, it was only 62% at 130 hours.

The difference between the impact of the old and the new approaches was even more significant in a non-site field test: Using electrokinetics can achieve a recovery efficiency higher than 90%, an 80% decrease in polluting agent usage and a 70 % reduction in impurity.

The study confirmed that this novel electrokinetic technology enabled green, efficient and selective recovery of REEs. Researchers also noted that the new method has great potential for use in the mining of other critical metals under conditions in which the metals exist in ionic states.

    1. Why is the new technology referred to as a “greener alternative” for REE mining?
    1. It is based on cleaner energy.
    2. It achieves a higher recovery efficiency.

    C. It recovers REEs from weathering crusts.

    D. It depends less on the use of chemical agents.

    29. How does the author present the practicality of the new technology?

    A. By analyzing causes.    B. By listing examples.

    C. By providing test results.   D. By giving instructions.

    30. What can we know about the new technology?

    A. It contributes to the extraction of purer REEs.

    B. It causes REEs to be mined at a higher cost.

    C. It is widely adopted in mining critical metals.

    D. It frees REE mining of the impact on nature.

    31. What is the text mainly about?

    A. A new technology with great potential in mining metals.

    B. A greener REE mining technology with higher efficiency.

    C. The difficulties in mining REEs from ion-absorption deposits.

    D. The differences between conventional and new REE mining methods.

    D

Facebook lets friends connect. They can give each other updates, share photos and post comments. But that's not all. Facebook might also stress users out.

In a new study, 88 volunteers revealed how much time they spent on Facebook and the types of Facebook posts and comments that they made. In addition, they answered questions about their feelings and state of mind. They also offered saliva. Researchers tested it for cortisol (皮质醇). This chemical is a stress hormone. Levels of it vary throughout the day.

In this study, people with the most Facebook friends, more than 300, had somewhat higher cortisol levels. Additionally, the more Facebook friends that users had, the more likely they were to feel anxious. On the other hand, youths who gave lots of likes and supportive comments on Facebook had lower cortisol levels. The more social support you give to others, the lower your stress hormone levels will be, says Lupien.

This research decidedly combines the social science approach and the medical science approach on an important question in our social-media age, says Wenhong Chen, a sociologist at the University of Texas at Austin. It's really pleasantly new to see Lupiens team study cortisol levels —along with questionnaire data.

One finding from Lupiens work surprised Chen. Teens who felt they got a lot of support from others also had higher cortisol levels. Usually, she says, those feelings should protect people from stress. There are many potential dangers of social media use among young people, Chen notes. So, she says, enjoy Facebook, but be aware of the risks.

Lupien suggests that teen Facebook users share information with and support their friends on the site. They shouldnt just stay silent. If anyone is more stressed, its the watchers, not the sharers, she says. Also, she recommends that people who use social media heavily should find time to take active walks, to run or to do other activities. Cortisol increases a person's energy. The best way to reduce stress hormones is to use the energy, she says.

    32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. research contents B. research results

    C. research applications D. research backgrounds

    33. What should we do if we want to feel less stressed?

    A. Share as many photos as possible.

    B. Listen to music frequently on social media.

    C. Give more positive comments to others.

    D. Communicate less with others on Facebook.

    34. What is Wenhong Chen’s attitude towards Lupiens study?

    A. Cautious B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.

    35. What can be learned from Lupiens suggestion?

    A. There are many dangers on social media.

    B. Doing physical exercise helps reduce the levels of cortisol.

    C. Sharers on Facebook live a happier life than watchers.

    D. Getting support from e-friends makes us healthier.

    The Trouble With Chores (家庭杂务)

The twins, Jenna and Jeff, were good at most things. Their dad was good at most things, too. But there was one thing the twins and Dad were not good at—that was chores. It wasn’t that Dad and the twins didn’t want to do their chores. It was just that they always seemed to have reasons not to do them. And they had such good excuses.

“You’re right, my dear,” said Mum. “The grass does need cutting. But a spider has spun a wonderful web on the lawn mower and I haven’t the heart to put all her hard work to waste.”

“Mum,” said Jenna, “I know it’s my week to put up my cards. It’s just that I’m waiting for them to dry. They’ll be easier to scoop up that way.”

“Mum,” said Jeff, “may I skip setting the table tonight? There’s a TV show on the Ice Age, and I have to do a report on the Beast of Baluchistan.”

There were also the endless quarrels about who did what and who got the easy job. Mum sighed. If only Dad and the twins were as good at doing their chores as they were at arguing about them, life would be easier. Talking of chores, Mum thought instead of pushing them for chores, it would be a lot easier to do them herself. And that was what she did. She put away all cards and set and cleared the table. She chased the dust bunnies from under the furniture and cleaned up the twins’ messy room.

The twins did pick up and put away things occasionally. Dad did cut the grass once in a while. Not surprisingly, things began to slide. Everybody got a little unhappy, especially Mum, who spent much time doing chores. Something had to be done. But what?

    注意:

    第二节参考范文

Mum decided to host a family meeting. “My dear,” she said, “there’s a lot more to life than chores. I’ve been so concerned with the house that I haven’t been to the gym for weeks.” “Go to the gym to work out,” Dad and the twins applauded. The whole family enjoyed themselves and not worrying about chores worked pretty well at first. But bit by bit, messy build-up began to take up the house.

Living in all that messy build-up wasn’t much fun. Dad decided to host a family meeting, too. No sooner had the meeting begun than everybody decided to do something about the awful mess. They picked up all the wet towels. They got the dishes out of the sink and got rid of the dust bunnies. Then they sat down, exhausted but pleased.
