Recently, a new kind of tourism has sprung up in China. Called “special forces style tourism”, this new kind of tourism features visiting multiple scenic interests in a short, intense period, most often on weekends. It is popular among college students, reported China Youth Daily.
Yu Yinghua in Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance is one of them. The 22-year-old started the “special forces style tourism” in March after she was attracted by such experiences of Xiaohongshu travel bloggers. “Confined (限制) to the school for almost three years due to the pandemic, I’m hungry to take trips in my spare time,” said Yu.
Her most recent trip was to Shanghai. Starting at 7 am, the 22-year-old visited nine local attractions. “That day, I walked almost 30,000 steps,” Yu said, “Though it’s a bit tiring, I enjoy the trip as much as day-long trips. It still lets me have a better understanding of the cities I go to.”
Unlike Yu who traveled in nearby cities, Chen Junjun, a doctoral student at Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, CAS, likes to travel far to rid herself of academic stress. In April, the 24-year-old took a two-day trip to Xi’an, Shaanxi. During her trip, she visited all the scenic sites in the city. “Juggling (同时应付) many academic responsibilities, such a trip can bring a splash of color (一抹亮色) to my stressful life!” said Chen.
Even so, the 24-year-old added that such tourism is not suitable for everyone. Chen said that it’s labor-consuming as visitors have to see as many sites as possible in an intensive (集中的) period. To some extent, such trips are not flexible as long-day trips in which you can change your plan as you like. “Thus, abundant energy and a calm mind are necessary for special forces style tourism,” said Chen.
    24. What can we infer about special forces style tourism from the text?
    A. It is labor-consuming but rewarding.
    B. It is popular with all people in China.
    C. It features visiting multiple scenic interests in a relaxing way.
    D. It is flexible as long-day trips in which you can change your plan as you like.
    25. Which of the following is NOT the reason why people take to this new kind of tourism?
    A. It can bring relief to our stressful life.
    B. It can contribute to learning more about the sites.
    C. It can help save time and money while enjoying the sites better.
    D. Confined for almost three years due to the pandemic, people long to take trips.
    26. What are required for special forces style tourism?
    A. Enough energy and calmness.
    B. Good outfit and an open mind.
    C. Rich experience and willpower.
    D. Abundant fund and a calm mind.
    27. What’s the main idea of the passage?
    A. A new kind of tourism has sprung up.
    B. Special forces style tourism is well-received worldwide.
    C. College students like visiting scenic interests on weekends.
    D. College students challenge themselves by traveling on a tight schedule.

Chinese American novelist Li Yiyun’s The Book of Goose has won the 2023 Faulkner Award for Fiction. “Li’s The Book of Goose is a dazzling, conventions-defying, nuanced (细腻入微的) novel,” stated the judging panel for the 2023 Faulkner Award.
First published in September 2022, The Book of Goose is “a gripping, heartbreaking new novel about female friendship, art, and memory,” which is centered around a conversation between its two protagonists (主角) — Agnes and Fabienne — on happiness and tells the story of how two French girls succeeded in literature after World War II.
Back in her younger years, Li did not believe she would go on such a long literary journey. After graduating from Peking University in 1966 with a bachelor’s in biological science, she went on to do her master’s in immunology (免疫学) at the University of Iowa, US.
What changed her life track was a community writing workshop in 1997. Without any specific purpose in mind, Li attended the workshop just like how “a housewife goes to a yoga class for fun,” she recalled. After that, Li began to write stories in English although she had no prior writing experience. Her efforts later earned her international fame.
Now Li is the author of several works of fiction, including Must I Go, Where Reasons End, and A Thousand Years of Good Prayers which have won her many awards. Her works have been translated into a dozen of languages, with some even adapted into movies.
Her works touch on thought-provoking topics like humanity, emotion, and cultural divide. She has been dedicated to exploring the different sides of human nature and the conflicts people face when coming from different cultural backgrounds. “I do have an interest in imperfections,” Li said. “I think it’s a matter of character. Some people will say I like the dark side, that is also character.”
    28. What do we know about The Book of Goose?
    A. It was first published in September 2023.
    B. It has won the 2022 Faulkner Award for Fiction.
    C. It is a new novel about friendship, art, science, and memory.
    D. It tells of two French girls’ experiences of success in literature after World War II.

    A. Li turned novelist unexpectedly.
    B. Li did well in academic performance.
    C. Li’s efforts earned her international fame.

On March 22, 2021, the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution published a new map of undiscovered species. This new effort is of great importance for Walter Jetz, study co-author and professor at Yale University, US. “At the current pace of global environmental change, there is no doubt that many species will die out before we have ever learned about their existence and had the chance to consider their fate,” Jetz said.
Less than a decade ago, Yale researchers mapped out the world’s life. Now Yale researchers have launched a more ambitious project — creating a map where life has yet to be discovered, whose goal is to help support biodiversity discovery and preservation across the globe. According to the researchers, “Conservative estimates suggest only 13 to 18 percent of all living species have been identified, although this number could be as low as 1.5 percent.” In the rapidly changing global environment, researchers are racing against time to discover the remaining species.
“Finding the missing pieces of the Earth’s biodiversity puzzle is therefore crucial to improve biodiversity conservation worldwide,” explained lead author Mario Moura, a biologist at the Federal University of Paraíba in Brazil. The map of undiscovered life is based on a model estimating where unknown species likely exist today, based on environmental, biological and sociological factors. The most undiscovered vertebrates (脊椎动物) — potentially 25 percent of all future discoveries — are expected to live in Brazil, Colombia, Madagascar and Indonesia. Tropical forests in these countries need protection and we must stop deforestation (滥砍滥伐) rates to discover our biodiversity.
“It is a fascinating project that allows us to better know biodiversity patterns on the planet,” Moura said. “We hope to motivate citizen scientists and biodiversity enthusiasts about the importance of species discovery and ignite (点燃) discussions and agreements from those responsible for decision-making and conservation planning.”
    32. Why is the new map so important?
    A. It is of environment-friendly importance.
    B. It will prevent most species dying out.
    C. It helps improve biodiversity conservation only in some countries.
    D. It helps support biodiversity discovery and preservation across the globe.
    33. What may Yale researchers agree with?
    A. It is a race against time to discover the remaining species.
    B. Only 13 to 18 percent of all living species have been identified.
    C. Many species will go extinct after we have ever learned about them.
    D. The new map is based on a model estimating where the world’s species exist.
    34. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Mapping the World’s Life B. Mapping Hidden Animals
    C. A New Map of Biodiversity D. Mapping Endangered Species
    35. What is the author most likely to talk about in the following paragraph?
    A. The importance of species discovery.
    B. The impact of deforestation on undiscovered species.
    C. Scientists’ new researches on biodiversity conservation.
    D. The more specific things we can do to help species discovery.
    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In recent years, research studies in some top US universities have found that emotional intelligence or EQ (short for Emotional Quotient) can be the key to success. 36
The concept of EQ was first introduced by psychologist John Mayer in the 1990s and has gained popularity since, especially because it is said to be something that you can try to improve. Someone who has high emotional intelligence can supposedly build strong relationships, achieve their goals and manage their emotions. 37 The following studies just prove that.
38 A 2020 Harvard study, published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, investigated the social skills of team players. They did this by grouping volunteers and giving them a variety of tricky problems. They then compared the top individual performers. 39 The first reason was that they were very good at recognizing the emotional state of their teammates. The second was that they helped to improve their team’s performance through motivation.
When doing research on links between emotion-understanding ability and risk-taking, a 2012 Yale study found emotional intelligence is critical to decision making. 40 The results revealed that participants with a high awareness of why they felt under pressure managed to keep a clearer head and were less likely to take risks. Being able to understand and manage emotions is a key part of EQ.
So, if you’re trying to succeed, work on your emotional intelligence and it may just make a difference!
    A. These are key areas for success in most jobs!
    B. It’s most likely that, during your career, you will need to work in a team.
    C. Having high emotional intelligence, or EQ, helps you perform well in risk-taking.
    D. Keeping a clear head and avoiding taking risks are important factors for success.
    E. Having high emotional intelligence, or EQ, can help you succeed, especially at work.
    F. Results showed two main reasons why these individuals excelled were both linked to EQ.
    G. They investigated the way that leaders come to a decision when they are under pressure.

    第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分20分)
Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Wandering aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes...but I don’t have money on me…” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”

    参考范文:
    Dear Sir or Madam,
Knowing from the Internet that you are recruiting volunteers, I’m writing to apply for this position. My advantages are listed as follows.
First and foremost, due to my love for animals, I spend my free time learning some knowledge about animal protection by reading books and watching videos, making it convenient for me to familiarize myself with this job quickly. What’s more, I have participated in some promotion activities related to animal protection.
If my application could be taken into consideration, I would spare no effort to take care of animals as well as spread related knowledge to the public so that they can understand how to treat animals scientifically.
I am looking forward to your reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

W: Let’s go to Greens. It’s just around the corner.
    M: Okay.
    Text 2
W: Hi, Stephen, guess who I saw at the city library? Andy Clarks — the leading actor in The Good Lawyer — the famous TV series.
M: What was he doing there? His popularity has slipped since the final season of the show.
    Text 3
W: It seems as if everybody is talking about Jason’s retirement.
M: Yes, his office is filled with gifts. I gave him a T-shirt with a baseball pattern on it.
W: That’s nice. I’ll get him something this afternoon. Hope it’s not late.
    Text 4
W: Did you go to Cooper’s last night?
M: No, was there anything special?
W: Yes, the employees dressed up as movie characters, and every customer received a discount card.
    M: That was interesting.
    Text 5
W: Oh, the road is jammed with traffic again. We are going to be late for work.
M: Let’s make a U-turn at the next crossroads and try another way.
    Text 6
W: Do you think Janet could make it?
M: I’m sure she can. Have you tried calling her?
W: Yes, of course. But I can’t get through. The flight has already been called twice. What are we going to do? Board without her? I should have reminded her at the office yesterday. She may have totally forgotten it.
M: Take it easy, Sarah. Let me call her home number. Oh, there she is.
    Text 7
M: Welcome to our program, Miss Johnson. Congratulations on winning the Teacher of the Year award.
W: Thank you, Peter. I’m more than happy to be here.
M: What inspired you to be a teacher, Miss Johnson?
W: Well, I’ve always loved to learn, but I’ve enjoyed teaching others even more. It’s in the family.
M: Could you tell us what the best part about your job is?
W: Getting to know all of the different kids and communicating with them. I have always loved kids. So, I will always enjoy that part of my job.
M: Then, what do you hope to achieve by being a teacher?
W: My goal is to help my students develop awareness of their strengths, weaknesses, and learning needs, and to enable them to learn throughout their lives.
    M: That sounds great.
    Text 8
W: Ethan, have you thought about getting your own house?
M: Yeah. But I’m convinced my parents love having me back. What about you?
W: Um... Not sure yet. Right now, I enjoy getting my meals cooked for me every day.
M: Do you pay a contribution to the house?
W: Of course, I do. But it’s still much less than I would pay to live in my own flat. Right?
    M: Obviously.
W: The only thing I don’t like is that my mom wants to know every part of my life. Becky, what are you doing tomorrow? Where? With whom? The same questions every day.
M: Moms are like that. They ask because they care. You’ve got to be patient with them. My parents ask those questions too, but I may not move out soon. The thought of leaving them fills me with fear. What if one of them falls over? What if they both have a fall together?
    W: That would be terrible.
    Text 9
    W: It’s a pretty good conference, huh?
M: Yeah. All speakers are well-known and knowledgeable in the subject matter. Did you listen to John Miller’s speech on how to avoid business risks this morning?
W: No, I missed that one. I went to a speech at Alan Brown Hall. The speaker was David Thompson.
M: Oh, that should be a good one, too. I attended his lecture last year. By the way, there will be a workshop this afternoon on how to motivate employees. Are you interested?
W: Sure. I was promoted to the position of manager a few months ago. And I have to manage a staff of 12 people. It can be quite a difficult situation sometimes. That’s why I am here today.
M: Same here. I only have seven people reporting to me. Yet, sometimes I feel like pulling my hair out. I need to find a way to create harmony within my department.
