It was a perfect summer morning on the beach in Rio De Janeiro. A man set up his umbrella and chair near the water and was ready to read his book. Just then, when he looked toward the sea, he noticed a small shape that came out of the water. It slowly made its way out onto the sand and began to flap(拍动) its wings. It was obviously weak and tired.
When the creature(动物) was just a few feet away, the man couldn't believe his eyes. A penguin? Penguins don't belong to Rio. The man was amazed. He looked around to see if there was anyone else noticing this strange sight.
A jogger(慢跑者) soon appeared, followed by another. They stopped and stared. It was clear that the penguin was having difficulty breathing. The first jogger looked at the sea and said, “Poor fellow, so far away from home.”
The penguin fell to its side. It had swum 2, 000 miles, trying to find the tiny fish that penguins like to eat. Why did the penguin need to travel so far? Perhaps it was confused by moving ocean currents and temperatures-common effects of global warming. The penguin needed help. It would not survive on the hot sand.
One of the joggers phoned for help and soon some firemen arrived. The man was glad that the penguin would soon be safe, although he felt a little sad, too.
The event on the beach at Rio happened some time ago. It was only the beginning of penguin migration (迁移) to Brazil. Since that time, hundreds of penguins have appeared on the coasts of Brazil. They come all the way from Patagonia and the Straits of Magelan southern parts of South America. They land on the sands very tired and hungry, and many of them die. Some are shipped or flown back to colder waters farther south. Perhaps the experience of the penguins will help us better understand the serious effect of human activity on climate change and on the condition of our planet.
33. Why did the man think it strange to see a penguin on the beach of Rio?
A. Penguins there had already died out. B. Penguins do not live in Brazil.
C. The penguin was not afraid of him. D. The penguin was moving very fast.
34. What probably caused the penguin to land on the beach of Rio?
A. Global warming. B. Pollution in South America.
C Penguins' natural migration. D. Animal scientists' help.
35. From the underlined sentence in the passage, we know that the writer _______.
A. is hopeful B. is happy C. is interested D. is worried
36. We can infer that the writer's writing purpose is _______.
A. remind people to mind human activity and protect our planet
B. tell us the experience of the penguins
C. call on us to save the penguins on the beach of Rio
D. show people in Brazil are friendly to penguins

When she was 14 years old, Remya Jose's life was turned upside down by a family crisis(危机). Remya, who lived in a small village in India, learned that her mother was ill and her father would have to spend his time caring for her. As a result, she and her twin sister had to do most of the housework-including washing clothes. To make things even more difficult, the Jose family couldn't afford an electric washing machine. Instead, the two girls would have to do the washing all by hand in the local river, and then carefully carry everything back to their home-a task that took several hours.
Being a good student interested in engineering, Remya wanted to make a washing machine which could be used without electricity. She started studying electric washers to learn how they worked. Remya then designed a machine that used bicycle pedals(踏板) and chain. To find those items, she and her father went to a local auto shop. Workers there not only gave her the parts, but they also helped her make the machine.
Here's how the machine works: Remya used a cylinder(圆简) to hold the clothes and put it in a cube (立方体). Next, she connected the bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder. As Remya pushed the pedals with her legs, the cylinder cleaned the clothes just like a regular washing machine Remya's invention worked! She had created her own human-powered washing machine-and now a task that used to take several hours took only 30 minutes. Remya's washing machine was chosen from among 25, 000 entries as India's best innovation! She was given India's National Award and honored by the nation's former president.
The story of this young woman's creative invention spread around the world.
“Remya Jose made a difference,” said Jeanine Thomas of The Borden Project. “Her invention saves time and money for the world's poor. Her story shows that with creativity, one individual can improve the life of many.”
37. What was Remya and her twin sister's main problem?
A. Their parents were too busy. B. They couldn't get good education.
C. Their home was far from the river. D. They spent much time washing clothes.
38. Which of the following best shows how Remya solved the problem?
①getting bicycle pedals and chains
②making a human-powered washer
③testing her machine by washing clothes
④studying how washing machines worked
A. ③①④② B. ④②①③ C. ①④③② D. ④①②③
39. The underlined word “innovation” in paragraph 5 most probably means “_______”.
A. prize B. invention C. idea D. process
40. According to Remya's story, we can learn that _______.
A. With help, an inventor can win great honor.
B. With kindness, one can save the lives of many.

Did you know that the black widow spider is one of the most poisonous spiders in the world? But only the females can hurt you. 41 The female's poison(毒) is much stronger than that of a rattlesnake. A person who has been bitten can die if he or she does not get treatment.
The female black widow is about 0. 5 inch long. She is black and has red marks on her belly. 42 The male is 1/3 of the female's size. He doesn't have any red marks.
Let's observe one black widow female. When we first see her, she is hanging upside down on her web. 43 Her skin becomes smaller, then she sheds it. She grows a new, larger skin. This is called molting, and it happens about eight times during her life.
One day a male black widow comes to the edge of the female's web. He strums on the web. 44 If not, she may chase and eat him. It is unsafe to be a male black widow.
After mating, the female weaves a small silk sac. This is where she will lay from 250 to 750 eggs. 45 The female guards the egg sac for about a month. Then baby spiders, or spider lings, hatch. The spider-lings are small and helpless when they come out of the egg sac. Many are eaten by birds or insects. Some are even eaten by their mother. Most, however, live and become adults.
A. If the female is ready to mate, she will strum too.
B. The black widow gets her name from the fact that she sometimes eats her mate.
C. She stays there for three days without moving.
D. The males are harmless.
E. Black widows lay their eggs in the spring.
