Although Kobe Bryant is no longer with us, his unbreakable will on and off the basketball court lives on. This month, it was announced that the late superstar would be accepted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Aug. 29, a great honor for basketballs best.

His fierce competitiveness, work ethic and drive were unmatched,” Jeanie Buss, owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, told ESPN. Those qualities helped Bryant lead us to five titles—and have now brought him to the Hall of Fame. No one deserves it more.

Indeed, it was Bryants unmatchable commitment and determination to be the best that elevated (提升地位) him above his peers. He called it the “mamba mentality” after the black mamba, one of the world's deadliest snakes—and also after the top killer from the 2003 movie Kill Bill. The mamba mentality became so popular that Bryant even detailed his process in his book The Mamba Mentality: How I Play. In it, he revealed his famously detailed approach as well as his physical and mental preparation to not just succeed at the game, but to excel.

“Mamba mentality is all about focusing on the process and trusting in the hard work, which is just the competitive spirit.” he wrote in the book. It started when someone described me like that one day, and it's grown into something athletes—and even non-athletes—adopt as a mindset.

Bryant took after one of the greatest basketball players, Michael Jordan, not only with regard to Jordan's playing style, but his competitive nature. I liked challenging people and making them uncomfortable,” Bryant once said, That's what leads to self-reflection and improvement. You could say I dared people to be their best selves.

Though many were shocked and sad when the Los Angeles great died in a helicopter crash in January, all signs point to Bryants legacy (遗产)for generations to come. Whether youre a basketball player or not, you can't deny the Kobe's power to inspire you to be your best self.

24It can be inferred from the second paragraph that ________.

ABryant's qualities helped him win five titles

BBryant was too competitive to become a great player

CBryant in particular deserves the honor he will receive

DBryant is the only qualified player in the Hall of Fame

25According to Bryant, what is true mamba mentality?

AIt means being willing to cooperate with teammates.

BIt refers to the spirit of working hard to be the best.

CIt means reflecting on oneself from time to time.

DIt is a belief that both the process and outcome matter.

26Why did Bryant like challenging people?

AHe found it fun to make people uncomfortable.

BHe wanted to show off his basketball skills.

CHe inspired them to develop passion for basketball.

DHe believed it could promote people's improvement.

27What is the text mainly about?

AHow Bryant died in a helicopter crash.

BHow mamba mentality came into being.

CWhy Bryant was inducted (引导) into the Hall of Fame.

DMamba Mentality—Bryant's legacy to the world.

    C

Forget calling the front desk. If youre a guest at an Affinia hotel, the staff will try to find out what you need just by looking at you.

The Affinia Hotel Collection is improving service in its five hotels in New York City and one each in Chicago and Washington D.C. Everyone from housekeeping to management will communicate with guests based on body language.

A body language expert trained employees on what cues (信号) to look for. A guest who makes eye contact while walking down the hall, for example, may be open to conversation. A businessman frequently touching an ear is probably nervous and may be interested in a therapeutic pillow (理疗枕头)

So many companies, when they talk about service, they program it to how many rings till you answer the phone,” says John Moser, marketing officer for Affinia. “That doesn't sound very reasonable. Let's give employees some tools they can use to find out what's the right way to talk with somebody at a particular time.”

Patti Wood, a body language expert who carried out the Affinia training, says she has never seen such training given to all hotel employees. All of the training is to make sure every single guest is treated as special,” she says.

Staff questions about a guest's day won't disappear, Moser says. But, he says, small talk isn't always enough to get a reading of a guest's needs. You can't always tell from the first sentence whether someone is happy or unhappy,” he says. “Measuring some of the things they're showing, with the way they're talking to you, can help our employees provide a service that's more personal for them.”

    28What are Affinia hotels doing?

    AUnderstanding their employees better.

BSetting up new hotels in different cities.

CTraining employees to understand guests' needs better.

    DImproving their employees' body language.

29What should a hotel employee do if a guest looks into his or her eye?

AOffer a pillow. BMake small talk.

CAvoid speaking to the guest. DBe open to the guest's suggestions.

30What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    AThe company. BThe service.

    CThe phone.  DThe hotel.

31What does Patti Wood think of Affinia's training?

    AIt is completely new.

    BIt makes employees feel special.

CIt will take the place of staff questions.

DIt is following some other companies' example.

    D

Should humans explore space? If you ask me, I’ll definitely give a positive answer.

The space exploration has a direct impact on the lives of humans, as well as the state of our world. Satellites moving around the earth enable communication across the world, connecting people of different continents and broadcasting information worldwide. The Global Positioning System (GPS) can identify our location anywhere. Furthermore, weather satellites can forecast harmful weather conditions, which allows humans to prepare for deadly natural disasters and save lives.

Space programs can also indirectly lead to the solution to poverty and world hunger. For example, large plots of land could be used far better if humans applied technologies. The most effective tool is the artificial earth satellite. It can screen areas of land within a very short time, indicating useful measures, such as the condition of crops, soil, rainfall, and droughts. It can then transmit this information to ground stations on the earth for better use.

In recent years, space-based technologies have become an important factor to reach and expand global health objectives. Information provided by remote technologies can be applied to study the epidemiology. This data provided by space technologies can monitor disease patterns, understand the environmental causes that spread it, make predictions about where it can spread in the future, and make plans to fight it efficiently.

Furthermore, space exploration is something we can do for future generations. Mankind is using the resources provided on the planet, but these will run out one day. Overpopulation can be an existential threat for all mankind. With the advancement of space technology, it will be wise to use and explore the vast potential of other planets, such as the availability of mining resources on asteroids or other planets.

For the exploration of the universe, perhaps the most advantageous of all is that it will unite us to work together for a common purpose, regardless of our differences.

32What can space exploration do according to Paragraph 2?

AImprove the traffic on the earth.

    BPromote travel between countries.

    CHelp prevent deadly natural disasters.

DHelp humans communicate and spread information.

33How can space programs help solve poverty and world hunger?

    ABy protecting available land resources

BBy creating job opportunities for the poor.

CBy transporting food worldwide more easily

DBy benefiting crop production with artificial earth satellites.

34What does the writer think of mining resources on other planets?

    ATime-wasting.   BArguable. CUnnecessary. DRewarding.

    35What is the text?

    AAn advertisement. BAn argumentative essay.

    CA speech. DA news report.

    第二节 (5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Helping Your Teens Understand the Value of Money

It seems that there are more things for teens to spend money on than ever. There are expensive clothes, video games, MP5 players and so on. 36. That’s why it’s important to help them understand the value of money.

Start teaching your children about money early. Starting around age 10, give them a few dollars every week to spend however they want. 37. But let them choose what they want to do. Don’t set limits on what they can spend it on, and don’t continually buy them things they want. They’ll soon learn that if they spend all their money as soon as they get it, they won’t be able to afford more expensive things they want.

You should also start early introducing your children to budgets (预算) and how much things cost. Have them go to the store with you or watch you pay the bills. 38. .

As your children get older, about 13, increase their pocket money as you increase their responsibility. Once they’re more responsible, give them a budget for something bigger like clothes and make them stick to it.

Eventually, your children will probably get a job. 39. Have them put some into a savings account to use for college or other pursuits. Let them use the rest as mad money to spend however they want. If you’re worried about what they’re buying, open them a checking account you can monitor.

    40. It takes many small steps. Remember that they will probably mess up along the way, but mistakes are how they learn.

    A. Help them choose a well-paid job.

    B. And you can also encourage them to pay the bills.

    C. Take this opportunity to teach them about savings.

    D. Soon they’ll realize how much some things really cost.

    E. Make the pocket money dependent on doing housework.

    F. Teaching your children the value of money will not happen overnight.

    G. If you aren’t made of money, it’s hard to give your kids everything they want.
