Let us look at what makes an effective persuasive speech.
Choose a good topic.
First, you should choose a topic you know something about or have researched well to prepare for your speech. Make sure it is a subject about which people have different opinions. 1
It is also best to choose a subject your listeners care about or can act on. 2 You can expect that they care about how the town appears, or that they can change their actions. So, giving a speech about why littering harms your town’s appearance might persuade people who do it to stop.
3
You should consider your listeners as you plan your speech. What do they value? Thinking of the things your listeners value will help you form arguments in your speech. If you want them to stop eating unhealthy foods, for example, you may appeal to the value of their appearance. You will talk about how healthy foods result in good-looking skin and an attractive body.
Prepare your argument.
4 We use Greek words to describe them because the ancient Greeks developed and appealed to these ideas. They are:
Ethos—appeal to the listeners’ ethics or morals.
Pathos—appeal to the listeners’ emotions.
Logos—appeal to the listeners’ logic or intelligence.
Organize your speech.
You should make an outline of your speech. Start with an attention-getting statement. Then explain your main idea and give evidence to support your argument. List the points you want to make and think of how to answer arguments against your position.
Finish with a call to action—what do you want your listeners to do? 5 Do not plan to read the speech word-for-word from a paper.
A.Know your audience.
B.Make the theme clear.
C.What will you do if you fail?
D.Do you see people in your town littering?
E.It would not be logical to speak about a fact recognized by everybody.
F.There are three common ways to persuade people of your way of thinking.
G.Finally, practice at home until you need only a note card with your main points on it when you give the speech.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be? Children have been asked this question for generations, but it seems their answer are changing. 16
Twenty-five years ago, the most common ambition of American children was to be a teacher, followed by working in banking and finance, and then medicine. Today’s younger generation most commonly say they want to be a sport star, a pop star or an actor. 17 Others feel that this trend will ultimately lead to dissatisfaction as more and more people are unable to reach their goals.
According to a survey, children desire these jobs largely because of the wealth associated with them. 18 If people link happiness to wealth and status, they are more likely to work hard to achieve them. But the satisfaction is short-lived. This then creates a pressure for the person to keep pushing to achieve more targets, which places the individual under greater stress.
19 Many careers in the spotlight are short-lived. For example, many athletes’ physical peak only lasts a few years and singers can have a very limited career.
Despite the drawbacks of being rich and famous, there is greater ambition than ever among young people to attain that status. 20 People unrealistically believe that a celebrity (名人) lifestyle is easily attainable. Unfortunately, it takes talent, skill, and hard work to be good at a sport or at singing. As a result, many won’t fulfill their childhood dreams, and this could have a negative effect on their happiness.
A.As a result , they have a feeling of worthlessness.
B.This has been caused by today’s celebrity culture.
C.Many agree that people should set the goals at an early age.
D.However, such ambitions may put pressure on the individual.
E.A recently study has highlighted a dramatic shift in children’s ambitions.
F.Some people would argue that there is nothing wrong with such ambitions.
G.Moreover, fame and fortune do not always have a positive impact on an individual’s life.
Sending a note of congratulations is a wonderful way to let someone know you care about them. 21 , but these messages are an excellent way to stay in touch, develop a relationship, and build goodwill.
In informal circumstances, it’s all right to send a message of congratulations in an e-mail. 22 . In a professional context, you might write a letter; in a more personal context, your messages should be hand-written on high-quality note paper.
The purpose of a note of congratulations is straightforward: to recognize and congratulate the recipient on some wonderful achievement, event, or milestone in her life. 23 .
Rather than writing a generic note, really take some time to brainstorm your content to make your message special. What do you know about how hard the reader worked to achieve this milestone? Share personal insights and memories, and your note will mean that much more. 24 . People like to be praised for their general wonderfulness, but they especially like to know that you understand what they’ve been doing and effort they’ve made.
25 . As you look over the draft, put yourself in the reader’s shoes and try to imagine how you would feel if you received such a note. Can you make it more personal, more meaningful? Revise your draft until you know you are sending a message you yourself would like to receive.
A.Appreciate what went into the achievement
B.A note like this can make your reader feel appreciated
C.Choose general words to praise what they’ve achieved
D.It’s a good idea to write out a rough draft before you actually write on nice paper
E.However, your message will mean much more to the recipient if you put it on paper
F.As technology develops, people can send messages of congratulations in various ways
G.As the pace of life has accelerated, people are sending fewer messages of congratulations
Setting boundaries communicates what you are willing to do, allowing you to make your own decisions. Here are some steps for setting healthy boundaries.
26
For some of us, we may not even know that a boundary has been crossed or a limit overstepped until after the fact. The first step to setting boundaries is to identify what your limits are. Some useful questions you can ask yourself include: Where am I overextending myself in my life? What areas of my life make me tired? What is causing me unnecessary stress?
The key to identifying your limits and boundaries is to listen to your first reaction. 27 .
Clearly communicate your boundaries
The next step to establishing healthy boundaries is to communicate them to others. 28 . If you’re not used to setting clear boundaries, it may feel uncomfortable or even rude for you to start doing so. However, finding a direct and kind way to strongly communicate your needs is key to maintaining your boundaries.
Practice what you want to say
Practicing what you want to say will increase your chances of successfully setting a boundary. 29 . Practice making your voice heard and sharing your thoughts.
Avoid over-apologizing or over-explaining
In an effort to be polite and avoid seeming rude, some people can fall into a tendency to apologize or explain the reason why they’re setting a limit. 30 .
Notice if you tend to fall into these patterns, it can be helpful to explore why you want to apologize. Afterward, make sure you change your ways.
A.Identify your limits
B.When we explain something, we want to be concise
C.Think through what you need by setting boundaries
D.Don’t assume that others automatically know your limits
E.But really, saying no doesn’t have to be rude or need an explanation
F.Setting aside time to reflect on past experiences can help you better understand your limits
G.Start by thinking about the people and situations in your life where you often feel pressured to say yes
A Taste of Chinese Tea Culture
China’s traditional tea-making practices have been added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) items. 31 .
The origins of tea
Tea is believed to have originated in China. Ancient Chinese people first chewed on raw tea leaves for medicinal purposes, then added them to soups or greens, and made tea to drink.
The functions of tea
Ancient Chinese books recorded tea’s positive health effects, such as curing indigestion and improving brain function. 32 . For example, Myoan Eisai, a Japanese Buddhist, praised the value of tea as a medicine in his book.
33
Tea has gained widespread popularity since the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty, especially in literary circles, including the famous Chinese poets Bai Juyi, Su Shi, and Lu You who all wrote poems about tea, making the Chinese culture passed down one generation after another.
Tea-making skills
Since ancient times, Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea. Traditional tea processing techniques are mainly found in four major regions for tea production in China. Associated social practices, however, are spread throughout the country and shared by multiple minority nationalities. 34 .
Tea’s role in building cultural bridges
35 , dating back to the old days when it was important produce on the ancient Silk Road and the ancient Tea Horse Road.
A.Cultural value of tea.
B.Famous tea overs in history
C.Let’s have a taste of Chinese tea culture
D.In 2020 China ranked first in the world for tea leaves productions
E.Besides reprocessed teas, there are over 2,000 tea varieties in China
F.Chinese tea’s medical purposes are also recognized in other countries
G.Tea has long been bridging the friendship between China and the world
The days when art was an Olympic sport
Did you know that creating works of art used to be an Olympic competition? 36 In the first year, Walter Winans became the first and the only Olympian to win medals for both art and sports. Despite this seemingly optimistic start, the idea of the arts being included in the Olympic Games soon met with disinterest, finally resulting in the removal of the art competition from the Olympic Games.
37
The idea to include art in the Olympics came from Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who was the founder of the International Olympic Committee, which created the modern Olympics. Coubertin believed that the arts and sports were linked and was impressed by anyone who had a firm command of both a sport and an artistic discipline(项目).
Why aren’t the arts included in the Olympics today?
For starters, only amateurs were allowed to compete in the arts part of the Olympics. 38 Having artists of average quality competing while only the most competent athletes were allowed to compete created a dramatic divide and gave the impression that the arts were not as important as sports.
Secondly, works of art created had to have sports as the subject matter. 39 Limiting the subjects also contributed to making the arts part of the Olympic Games boring to the general public.
Finally, one of the biggest reasons was that the arts are subjective. Sports can be judged by time and distance, making it easy to determine who is the winner. 40 This difficulty in judging a definite winner resulted in the arts part becoming a non-competitive exhibition that ran for the duration of the Olympic Games.
A.Why was art made an Olympic discipline?
B.What is a discipline in the Olympic Games?
C.This rule made the objects produced seem really boring.
D.The arts, on the other hand, are not quite so easy to judge
E.However, the arts part of the Olympics Games was soon abandoned
F.This means that many famous artists were banned from participating.
G.For 36 years, from 1912 to 1948, artists participated in the Olympic Games.
The school holidays are kicking off. But with airports and airlines still struggling to manage. 41 . Fortunately, now one airport worker has revealed some advice for passengers heading abroad.
42
The biggest mistake passengers are still making is not having their bags ready for the security check, which can have a much more significant effect than people may realize.
“Make sure you’re not got excessive creams: liquids and gels,” the worker said, pointing out that stick deodorants and lipsticks counted as liquids.
Don’t try and chance it with bag limits
43 . Airlines have strict hand luggage rules. While it may be tempting to bring an extra bag and hope to get away with it, it’s more likely you’ll end up delaying the boarding process as bags need to be put into the hold.
Check your documents before you travel
Most countries have been easing their Covid travel rules, but plenty of destinations still have restrictions in place regarding vaccine (疫苗) requirements or Covid tests.
44 . After all, there’s not much that staff can do to help if you don’t have your paperwork in order.
Don’t arrive too early at the airport
Airlines have different rules on when you should arrive at the airport for your fight. Unfortunately with the travel chaos, there are holidaymakers showing up hours early, hoping to make the flight if there are queues. However, too many people arriving early means security and check-in queues become too long. 45 So, as is urged by Manchester Airport, you’d better arrive no earlier than three hours before departure.
A.British people are facing travel chaos
B.Check and make your luggage secure
C.Have your bag ready for security check
D.And the long queues are the usual cause of missing flights.
E.Extra luggage means you’re totally forbidden to get on board
F.So it’s important that you arrive at the airport with all the needed documents
G.Make sure you don’t have extra baggage when you’re getting onto the plane
The health triangle is a helpful tool for visualizing your total well-being. The triangle is made up of three sides, each representing an important side of your health: Physical, Mental and Social. 46
Exercise. Thirty minutes of exercise a day, four to five times a week is the recommended amount for most people. Exercise can help you lose weight and reduce your risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers. 47 The endorphins (内啡肽) released during exercise might help lighten your mood, which is beneficial to your mental health.
Make time for activities that give you joy. You probably have a very busy schedule with the demands of work, home and everything in between. But preserving your mental health means making time for things that bring you joy and also keep you calm. 48 And set aside at least a few hours each week in which you can relax and take this time to yourself.
49 Social health is improved by networks of friends and family members. They are people who support you, give you guidance, and celebrate joyful moments in life with you. Try to build up networks where people meet regularly in person. Taking a class, attending a monthly book club, or joining a local tennis team means you will have a regular opportunity to make friendships.
Volunteer. Another great way to improve social health is to give back to the community. 50 It has been shown to have enormous benefits to its participants, especially in increasing their psychological well-being and sense of social integration (融合).
A.Build up a community.
B.Try to narrow existing networks.
C.It can also relieve the symptoms of stress or anxiety.
D.Make a list of things you enjoy doing in your spare time.
E.There are several steps you can take to protect your physical health.
F.It can help develop your sense of belonging to your local town or city.
G.Strengthening each side of the triangle will help you lead a healthy life.
Do Weighted Blankets Work?
Sleep is supposed to be a natural thing, but if you wrestle with insomnia (失眠症), you may be tempted to try pieces of equipment that promise better sleep. 51
“They’ve become the sleep tool to have,” says Alanna McGinn, founder and lead sleep expert at Good Night Sleep Site. “I’m a huge supporter of them because they can work so well.”
About 32 percent of Americans don’t get enough sleep, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 52 Insomnia impacts as many as 35 percent of adults from time to time, while 10 percent have chronic trouble falling and staying asleep.
Choose one that’s around 10 percent of your body weight. 53 Inside is a layer of plastic, glass or metal balls surrounded by filling. McGinn says the blanket’s heaviness acts as a touch therapy called deep pressure stimulation. Just as wrapping babies tightly can send them to sleep, these blankets help your heart and breathing rates slow and your body release feel-good hormones, including serotonin (血清素).
Are they effective? A 2020 review study in the U.S. looked at eight previous studies and concluded that weighted blankets helped reduce anxiety — but not necessarily insomnia. 54 A randomized controlled study in Sweden looked at 120 people with insomnia and also depression or anxiety. 55 People with conditions such as diabetes or breathing issues, however, should check with their doctor before using one. “And if you’re someone who is a little afraid of an enclosed space, it’s probably not the best thing for you,” adds McGinn.
A.It recommends at least seven hours a night for adults.
B.Those who used a weighted blanket slept better and were less tired or anxious.
C.The study found a significant rise in the related symptoms.
D.But other 2020 research tells a slightly different story.
E.One that might sound a little weird but that has been known to work is a weighted blanket.
F.Dealing with such problems can be more or less tricky.
G.Weighted blankets range between two and 14 kilograms.
Prepare for a test
In your school, tests or quizzes maybe a part of your regular classroom work. Many teachers use tests to ensure that students have accurately learned the material that’s been studied. If taking a test makes you feel worried, the good news is that there are many easy ways for you to prepare and feel better before the exam or quiz. 56
Be organized
Studying for a test will be easier if you organize you notes, handouts, and assignments ahead of time for each of your classes. 57 Consider using a separate folder for each subject. You can keep them at home, at school, or in your backpack.
Make a plan
58 This might mean committing to studying for 30 minutes for a few afternoons the week before the test Or maybe you have more time on the weekends and want to plan extra study time then. No matter what you decide, block out the time on your calendar so you remember.
59
If you have learned a lot of material, such as in science class, ask your teacher what information will be on the test If your teacher hands out a study guide, use that guide to help you figure out what information you need to focus on most Next, decide how you want to review the material. Besides reviewing your notes, you could write key concepts on flash cards to test yourself. 60 If there is some information in your notes or in the study guide that is confusing to you, highlight that part and ask your teacher for clarification when you get to class.
These strategies can help you feel confident about demonstrating your knowledge.
A.Here’s how to get started.
B.Highlight the study guide
C.Focus on the right material
D.When you prepare for study, make a plan.
E.This way, the information will be there for you when you need to review it
F.Write the question on one side of the notecard and the answer on the other.
G.Once you have a test date, look at a calendar and make a plan for when you’ll study.
Winter is one of the most magical times of the year to get moving. 61 However, when you wake up in the morning, it can be hard to follow through on an exercise commitment. Here are ways to keep that drive going throughout the cold months.
Work out with a group. 62 This gives you social support and can help with making friends. When you exercise with a group, flaking out (入睡) is no longer an option.
Dress for the weather. When you are working out in the winter, especially if you are exercising outdoors, keep yourself out of the cold in warm layers (层). 63 Make sure the top layer keeps out the snow and rain. If you plan to exercise outside in the dark or in bad weather, where visibility is poorer, wear bright and reflective clothing for safety.
Change up your workout. 64 Doing the same type of training can be demotivating. Those who vary their workout routines are 20% likelier to enjoy the exercise session. Switching up your routine can give you a boost of motivation, and help keep winter workouts fun and enjoyable.
65 Using phone apps, or a fitbit, or even going low tech and marking your calendar in red pen can help you visualize how you’ve progressed thus far. Finding a system that lets you track your exercise achievements can give you the extra push to get you going when the going gets hard.
New Year’s resolutions are a great opportunity to start an exercise routine. Sure working out during the winter may be an uphill battle, but there are strategies to get us over the hill, and onto a healthier, happier new year.
A.Track your training.
B.Variety is important to enjoy exercise.
C.You can make your workouts enjoyable.
D.Your layers should be, not just warm, but dry.
E.Use an app to remind you of an exercise routine.
F.Winter workouts give us energy to get through winter’s cold days.
G.One way to stay motivated during winter is to work out with a group or a partner.
What Are Great Books?
There’s no end to the making of books. Nor does there seem to be any end to the making of lists of “great books”. 66 What I will mention may not be all there are, but they are the ones I’ve found most useful in explaining my choices over the years.
Great books are probably the most widely read.
They’re not bestsellers for a year or two. They are lasting bestsellers. Gone With The Wind has had relatively few readers compared to the plays of Shakespeare. It would be reasonable to estimate that Homer’s Iliad has been read by at least 25,000,000 people in the last 3000 years. 67
Great books arc popular, non-academic.
They’re not written by specialists about speciaties. Whether they be philosophy or science, or history or poetry, they treat of humans not academic problems. 68 But the great books can be considered elementary in the sense that they treat the elements of any subject matter. They’re not related to one another as a series of textbooks, graded in difficulty.
69
They have more ideas per page than most books have in their entirety. That is why you can read a great book over and over again and never exhaust its contents. They can be read at many different levels of understanding. Obvious examples are Gulliver’s Travels, Robinson Crusoe and Odyssey. Children can read them with enjoyment, but fail to find there in all the beauty and significance which delight an adult mind.
Great books are the most instructive.
Great books contain what cannot be found in other books. Whether you ultimately agree or disagree with what they say, these are the primary teachers of mankind. 70 It’s almost unnecessary to add that the great books are the most influential. In the tradition of learning, they have been most discussed by readers who have also been writers.
A.Great books are the most readable.
B.Great books are the most representative.
C.They have made basic contributions to human thought.
D.The listing of the best books is as old as reading and writing.
E.What are the signs by which we may recognize a great book?
F.It may take time for a great book to accumulate its ultimate audience.
G.To read advanced textbooks, you have to read elementary textbooks first.
Every day we hear about people making career changes. The opportunities exist. 71
Following are four practical steps towards coming to terms with why you do what you’re doing. Realize that your job does not define you, but how you do it does. There’s a lot to be said for attitude. Any job can be done well, done with compassion, done with care. 72 They have a profound influence on the people you work with.
Find the significance in what you do. Take some time to really think about what you do. Do you provide an essential service? Do you get to see the finished product? Do you give direction that gets things done? Then ask yourself “How is this job done differently because I am doing it?” 73
Dare to ask yourself if it’s worth it. If you can’t find the part of your job that you like, or if you can see yourself turning into the person you said you would never be, consider the reasons. It may not be a new job that you need, just a new direction. 74 If not, are there changes you can make to the way you do your job or is the job itself the problem? Learn to say “no”. As much as you can choose the things you spend your time on, don’t attend events or meetings only because everyone expects it.
75 Money will never be enough so stop using it (or the lack of it) as an excuse. Try tracking every penny you spend in a week. Seeing where your money is really going can help you to refocus your spending towards the things you really want. Getting paid is only one small part of what you do, your work has to be more than just a paycheck to be fulfilling.
A.What you earn counts.
B.Stop focusing on the money.
C.Do you like yourself doing the job?
D.Those help you make a wise judgement.
E.Try to remember why you took the job in the first place.
F.But will all these changes make us any happier once we get there?
G.Your attitude at work and the way you treat people do not go unnoticed.
Vacation often starts with a wonderful idea. 76 With a little bit of preparation and effort, travelers can overcome 90% of the difficulties they may face during a trip. Here are useful tips on how to plan a trip.
Picking the right destination according to the season is a key factor in planning a trip successfully. 77 Usually, the ideal season to visit beaches, mountains and forests is completely different. Also take the cost factor into consideration. Going to a luxury destination during the shoulder season can result in some good discounts on hotels and flights.
Another key aspect of a good trip planning is to correctly estimate the number of days required. 78 Some travelers like to see new cities every day, whereas some prefer taking it slow. You’d better leave an empty day in travel plans in which there are more than 7 days so that things like terrible weather won’t mess up the whole arrangement.
79 Prices of flights and accommodations rise over time if you are planning for a vacation that falls during the peak season of that particular destination. So making a reservation a few months in advance will help you avoid additional costs.
Pack wisely and do necessary research. An extra shirt, sweater, or jumper can prove handy during trips where the weather is expected to be cold or rainy. As responsible tourists, travelers must know the destination they are visiting. 80 Because it helps them avoid conflict or disrespect to the locals.
A.Early booking is recommended.
B.Learn about the do’s and don’s.
C.Make the most of every traveling day.
D.But not everyone has a reasonable vacation plan.
E.It often depends on the travel plans and purpose.
F.Check out the best time to visit the place you like.
G.Something unexpected, however, makes it end up being a trouble.
It’s commonly thought that people get into bad financial situations because of poor decision-making skills. 81 In fact, several studies over the last decade have demonstrated that the cause and effect may be more complex than is widely believed.
82 Scientists first asked the study participants a series of questions that made them think about their personal income and savings. They were then asked to solve a number of puzzles. Those in better financial situations performed better at solving the puzzles than those in financial trouble. However, when the test was repeated without making the participants think about their own finances, the differences in performance between the rich and poor disappeared. 83
In a separate study conducted in 2018 at the University of Texas, the brains of more than 300 people aged between 20 and 89 were scanned and analyzed for signs of good cognitive function. Among those aged between 35 and 64, it was found that those with better financial situations had healthier brains, including characteristics linked to having a better memory and a lower risk of dementia when elderly. However, in younger adults (those aged 20 to 34), there did not seem to be any connection between wealth and brain health. 84
It’s not difficult to guess why poverty might have these effects. People who live in poorer conditions often have difficulty affording healthy food. 85 And always worrying about having enough money to pay rent or put food on the table puts constant demands on the brain, leaving less processing power available for critical thinking. Indeed, it could be said that poverty is a vicious cycle, keeping people trapped by taking away their best means of escape-their ability to make smart decisions.
A.But is poverty really caused by poor thinking?
B.Unwise decisions people make, to a greater degree, contribute to tight budgets.
C.They are more affected by negative environmental elements such as pollution.
D.Taken together, these results indicate that long-term poverty only gradually causes wear and tear on the brain.
E.Therefore, the scientists concluded that poor thinking plays a major part in one’s future financial condition.
F.This suggested that the distraction of worrying about their bad finances made the poor people perform worse than those with no financial worries.
G.One study in the journal Science in 2013 showed that people’s abilities to solve problems can be significantly affected by their current financial situation.
How do you deal with your newspapers after you’ve read them? Sending your old newspapers straight for recycling is a waste. 86 . I hope I am able to inspire some ideas and bring out the DIY in you.
Gift Packaging. 87 . Many decorative wrapping papers have a plastic layer, which makes it harder to biodegrade (生物降解) in landfills. Newspapers can be used in the same way as wrapping paper to package a gift. And you can even add some color to it with some markers or paint!
Fruit Wrapping. Fruits ripen faster when placed in newspapers. They produce a chemical gas from their plant tissues that causes them to ripen. This gas gets trapped by the newspaper further exposing the fruit to it and therefore ripening them faster. 88 , but newspapers are just as effective.
Seed Germination (萌发). Newspapers can be formed into pots that are great for growing plants from seeds. The newspapers break down easily and have nutrients that get absorbed by seeds. This is especially a great option for fast growing plants. 89 when the seedlings or young plants are ready. This allows them to experience less transplant shock and gives them a bigger chance of surviving.
Smell Absorption. You are certain to experience the terrible smell coming from your garbage can or your gym shoes. You needn’t use so much air freshener to mask the smell. 90 . You can place them at the bottom of your garbage can or stuff your shoes.
A.Recycling them is environmentally friendly
B.Here are some of my ways of reusing them
C.It’s similar to the more common paper bag method
D.Old newspapers are great for a cheap gift wrapping option
E.It is simple to make pots for seedlings from old newspapers
F.Instead, use highly-absorbent newspapers as an alternative option
G.What’s more, the whole paper pot can be directly planted into the ground
In a noisy world, the sound of silence is a gentle friend. Though it’s available to all, silence is rarely embraced. Quiet relaxes, restores and helps you a lot. 91 The average person wakes up to an alarm and then turns on the radio or TV. Outside, planes roar and cars honk. In fact, too much noise can actually reduce your cognitive (认知的) function and lifespan.
It is time to tap into silence, a necessary and forgotten natural resource. Just setting aside 30 minutes a day for pure silence is healing. Shut off your phone, turn off the music, and spend time alone. Similar to meditation (冥想), this precious time allows your brain to refresh cognitive functions including creativity. 92
Two hours of silence per day can be helpful to cell development in the brain, where memories are formed. Even though relaxing music can be effective, silence is ideal. 93 When surrounded by silence, your consciousness has more freedom to process information. This can lead to better decision making and more acute self-awareness.
94 A recent report suggested that one in three people lose a whole year off their life due to noise. And this is linked to heart disease, sleep loss and high blood pressure.
Although many find silence to be empty and boring, it is a gift and a rare thing like gold. 95 And then simply stay with it. When you embrace it and let it fill you, you are open to healing and wellness.
A.Silence can generate brain cells.
B.Silence may assist in self-reflection.
C.There is too much noise in daily life.
D.Try to move forward to a place of pure silence.
E.Too much noise can have a harmful effect on health.
F.This time will also help you reconnect with your inner self.
G.You may be so used to sounds and you hardly notice them.
Email is a way of sending messages and data to other people by means of computers connected together in a network, which plays a very important role in our daily life. It is something that most of us use almost every day. 96
First of all, someone sends you a joke and doesn’t give you license to send it to your whole address book. 97 The same is true for emails that say “send this on” or that promise you rewards for it.
Even if it is amusing or really interesting, stop and consider if it is appropriate to send it to others. If you have work addresses for your contacts, do not send it to anyone’s place of employment if there is any inappropriateness. 98 Therefore, don’t get them in trouble by sending something that is not appropriate.
99 Don’t worry. Please put the contacts in the BCC line, which means “blind carbon copy”. This way, all of your contacts are protected.
When receiving an email, if it is a personal note, the polite thing to do is to acknowledge it, even if it is just a quick return email to say “thanks!”. 100
Use a subject line that clearly lets the receiver know what the email is regarding, which helps the receiver to decide whether there is need for him/her to read the email attentively or not.
A.Never show your name in your emails.
B.If it’s not absolutely amusing, don’t send it.
C.How about sending your emails to all your friends?
D.Many people have strict rules about what they can send and receive.
E.It’s rude to receive a friendly email from a friend or co-worker and just ignore it.
F.What if you ignore the above advice and send out emails to your whole address book?
G.But there are some tips for good manners when it comes to sending or receiving emails.
For some people, summer is the time to head indoors to exercise. But others welcome the heat as way to sweat more and get a better workout.
Indeed, I’ve long regarded the sweatiness of my exercise sessions as a sign of how hard I was pushing myself. 101 How much you sweat isn’t necessarily related to how intense (强烈的) your workout is or how many calories you burn.
How much we sweat during exercise is due to a number of factors, including gender (men tend to sweat more than women) and age (younger people sweat more than older people) as well as genetics, temperature and humidity.
102 Larger people tend to sweat more, because their bodies produce more heat.
Another contributor is fitness level. 103 Research suggests that as your fitness level improves, your body’s heat-regulating system becomes more efficient, cooling you down faster and allowing you to work harder.
Don’t be misled by the loss of a few pounds after a high-sweat workout. 104 It doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve burned lots of calories.
On the other side, don’t think that a low-sweat workout means you aren’t working hard enough or burning enough calories. It could be that your sweat evaporates (蒸发) quickly because you’re exercising in air-conditioning, near a fan or outdoors on a windy day. 105
A.Surprisingly, fit people tend to sweat sooner during exercise than those who are less fit.
B.This is simply water weight that you will gain back after you drink water again.
C.Everyone does exercise in order to be fit.
D.But it turns out I’ve been wrong.
E.The harder I work, the more I sweat.
F.Or, unlike me, you simply may not sweat much.
G.Weight plays a role as well.
Eating as mindfully as we do in a mindfulness course is not realistic for many of us, especially with distractions around us. Here are five simple guidelines to bring our bodies and minds back together.
Let your body catch up to your brain.
106 . The body actually sends its satiation (饱食) signal about 20 minutes after the brain, which is why we often unconsciously overeat. Simple ways to slow down might just include chewing each bite 25 times or more and setting your fork down between bites.
107 .
Too often, we eat when our mind tells us to. Rather than just eating when we get emotional signals. which may be different for each of us. be they stress, sadness, or even just boredom, we can listen to our bodies. Is your stomach growling? Or do you feel a little dizzy?
Understand your motivations.
As we practice eating more healthily and a greater variety of foods, we are less likely to rely only on our comfort foods, and more likely to enjoy healthy foods, ultimately finding many foods mentally and physically satisfying as opposed to just a few. 108 .
Connect more deeply with your food.
Many of us don’t even consider where a meal comes from beyond the supermarket packaging. This is a loss, because eating connects us more deeply to the natural world and people involved in the meal. 109 . With just a little more mindfulness like this, we may begin to make wiser choices about sustainability and health in our food, not just for us but for the whole planet.
Attend to your plate.
Multitasking and eating is a recipe for not being able to listen deeply to our body’s needs and wants. 110 , and before the coming attractions are over, we are asking who ate all of it. With your next meal, try single-tasking and just eating.
A.Know your body’s personal hunger signals
B.Pay special attention to your eating habits
C.We can find foods that are both satisfying and comforting
D.When we pause to consider that, it’s hard not to feel grateful
E.You don’t have to plan your food down to each bite at special occasions
F.Slowing down is the best way we can get our mind and body to communicate
G.We’ve all had the experience of going to the movies with our bag full of popcorn
Cat behaviors can vary enormously from one cat to another. They are certainly interesting creatures with many cute and sometimes strange habits that often have us wondering. 111 Why do cats like high places? Wild cats were predators (捕食者), and frequenting high places meant they had somewhere safe to view their territory, watch for danger, and attack prey. 112 Our domesticated cats also enjoy watching the world from above, which provides them with a safe, calm place away from the activity in a house.
113 Both wild and domestic cats are drawn to hiding and sleeping in contained areas. At home, it is often the humble cardboard box. Cats are predators, and a box offers a perfect place to hide while waiting for prey and also to spring out of, as only one entrance exists.
Why does my cat give “gifts”? Cats are well known for leaving us gifts that we may not want, such as lizards or mice. 114 Showing off their catch to you means you are a part of their family and they want to show you their hunting skills. 115 Instead, be sure to offer your cat a variety of toys to help them satisfy these natural bunting instincts.
A.Why do cats sit in boxes?
B.Why do cats like playing with boxes?
C.This appears to be coded into their DNA.
D.Don’t express anger, as they will not understand.
E.Cats are predators and will hunt if allowed outdoors.
F.A cat’s natural behavior is to withdraw and hide in stress situation.
G.Veterinarian Dr. Katrina Warren provides answers to your questions about cat behaviors.
The Internet has the power to connect people across the world to a single shared community. Billions of people in different parts of the world have joined it already, and obviously many more will follow. 116
One of the greatest advantages of the Internet lies in the quick and easy access to a huge amount of information. 117 With the click of a mouse or the touch of a button, it is possible to find out almost anything we care to know, from food to travel packages, from news to learning resources. No wonder the Internet has now become the first place that most people turn to for information.
The Internet has also made our lives unbelievably convenient, with all sorts of goods and services provided by electronic commerce (商业), more commonly known as e-commerce. You can have food delivered to you using food delivery apps and sites. 118 There is no need to worry — you can pay for almost everything on your smartphone. Why wait hopelessly for a taxi in the cold rain? It is now simple and fast to order one with a taxi app. When you wish to go on holiday, you can make all your travel arrangements just in front of the computer.
119 With all sorts of communication software, physical distance no longer gets in the way. No matter where we are, we are able to keep in contact with loved ones, find long-lost friends and discover whole new communities who share our hobbies. 120
A.Forgot to carry cash?
B.However, Internet also has its problems.
C.This enables us to use our time more flexibly.
D.To a certain extent, the world’s knowledge is all at our fingertips.
E.Above all else, the Internet helps us establish and maintain social ties.
F.A message, a group chat, a video call — there are endless ways to share our views.
G.Even in the countryside, the Internet enables people to connect with the outside world.
Does your dog love to bury himself under your covers to sleep? Many dogs do. It is fun to think about why they might do this seemingly very human thing. 121
Animals depend on resources. 122 Your bed is a den (窝) to your dog. Since the bed is a place where he often goes, it is part of his life. Being there makes him feel safe and happy.
When your dog is under the sheets, he feels surrounded. Feeling firm pressure can calm down anxious dogs. Some kinds of dogs even like to dig holes to relax. The pressure of the sheets probably makes his brain produce happy chemicals that give him a sense of safety and maybe even fun.
123 This feeling is what he likes. He knows he is safe when you are there. You are a faithful friend and family member. You have marked the area as a safe zone. You spend a lot of time there. 124 Being near you when you sleep is very natural to your dog.
Dogs know that their choice of sleeping places is of great importance. 125 And the sheets give them a sense of security. Most of all, your dogs want to be under the sheets because that is where you are and the safest place is always with your family.
A.Actually, they are not afraid of danger.
B.Resources are things like food, water, and shelter.
C.In the same way, your family love you as well.
D.Their den is one of their most valuable resources.
E.Your presence also gives your dog a feeling of support.
F.As family members, you share responsibility to protect each other.
G.If you think about the way a dog sees life, it’s easy to imagine why he does so.
Owning a pet is a fun and rewarding experience. 126 . So how can you make sure that you choose the right one for you? Here are some top tips.
Do your research
You may like the look of a particular pet but that doesn’t mean it is right for you. Every pet has its own personality and certain breeds (品种) of animals often have strong traits, so think carefully about what you want from your pet and do some research before you take one on.
127 . For example, French bulldogs and pugs can suffer a number of health issues over their lifetime, including problems with their breathing and skin conditions due to their exaggerated features. We’d urge owners to really do their research before taking on one of these breeds.
128 .
For example, if you work full time and you want a dog, who would take care of it during the day? If you want a cat, will it have access to outside space while you’re out during the day? Do some research on the size, temperament and exercise requirements of different pets to make sure they’re the right choice for you.
Do your sums
From everyday things like insurance, food and toys to unexpected vet bills, having a pet is certainly a financial commitment. 129 .
Use a reputable breeder
Want to buy a pedigree (纯种的) dog or cat? 130 . Ask the breeder for all the relevant paperwork and see the pet’s parents to observe their temperament, general health and welfare. Don’t purchase one online or from dealers who offer multiple breeds or types of pets, or you will be cheated.
A.Think about your lifestyle
B.Think about what you really want
C.But every animal and their needs are different
D.Some breeds may also require more vet care than others
E.Ask your vet or breed club to recommend a responsible breeder
F.Ask dealers for advice who offer multiple breeds or types of pets
G.Think about how much your new pet will cost before you choose it
It is reported that 6 percent of the early deaths are caused by lack of physical activity, making it the fourth largest risk for death in the world after high blood pressure, smoking and high blood sugar. So exercise is necessary in everyday life. 131 The general answer is that running is one of the easiest forms of exercise. Science shows it doesn’t just keep you healthy. It can also actually help you live longer.
132 It turns out that running on a regular basis leads to extra life. Compared with non-runners who do different forms of physical activity and completely inactive adults, runners even have a 30 percent lower risk of all-cause deaths.
The various benefits of running on the body can make life longer. 133 A new study found that groups of runners compared to inactive groups did produce improvements in heart fitness. It could also reduce the deaths related to heart disease.
Running, however, is not the only method to keep fit. Another study of 44,551 men aged 40 to 75 found that running, tennis and fast walking reduced by 46 percent, 28 percent and 23 percent lower risk of heart disease, separately. 134
Now good news is that there are about 17 million road runners in the US, and the roads are lined with people running slowly or fast. 135 Then you will enjoy the same joy of exercise as they do and become more athletic and healthier.
A.It is a good idea to join them.
B.There are various indoor sports.
C.Are you interested in taking exercise?
D.It can especially improve heart health.
E.But which sport is easy for you to play?
F.So it is okay to choose other proper sports besides running.

137 They can help you bridge the gap between the times you are, say, having fun while being physically active or at a social hour with a group of friends.
Passive happiness is a natural complement to active happiness. Both states are fleeting, so when one fades, try your best to invoke the other. Here are a few ways you can tap into your passive happiness:
138 Focus on the present moment, act purposefully, and allow your internal thoughts to accord with your external environment. According to a recent study published in Acta Psychological mindfulness can help ease emotional dysregulation.
Be grateful. Take time throughout the course of your day to reflect on the things that are most important to you. Spend time in nature. 139
Forgive. Let go of the past. Don’t harbor resentment or hold grudges. One study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that forgiveness, as opposed to revenge, helped restore peopled sense of humanity and belongingness. 140 , ask yourself what your personal barriers to forgiveness are and take time to reflect on how remaining in an unforgiving state is affecting your emotional well-being.
A.Practice mindfulness
B.Follow your inner thought
C.Don’t overlook these “passive” states of happiness
D.When you lose your temper and can’t control yourself

In the past, animal shelters in Singapore were horrible places. Most of them were very old buildings that were dirty, noisy and crowded. 141 In 2014, the government decided to change this. Since then, 26 animal shelters across Singapore have been rebuilt or repaired with support from the government. The new buildings are so beautiful that some have even become tourist attractions.
In 2017, the government also made a new law that no longer allowed shelters to kill animals that didn’t get adopted. 142 Fortunately, the larger new shelters can provide more space for the strays More importantly, people will be more likely to adopt animals because the new shelters are more pleasant to visit. Some even have a space where people can spend time with the pets before adopting them.
143 Instead, adopt one from an animal shelter. There are many reasons why this is better. The most obvious one is that you will improve an animal’s life. Even though animal shelters in Singapore don’t kill animals anymore, the animal will live a more joyful life in your loving home. Second, many shelters are full, so they need people to adopt more pets. Third, the staff at animal shelters are very helpful. 144
If you buy a pet from a pet store, it’s likely that puppy and kitten mills (制造厂)will benefit. 145 The parents are usually kept in small cages and made to give birth to the next generation rapidly and endlessly. What’s more, pets from pet stores are usually much more expensive than adopted ones. The former may cost tens of thousands of dollars depending on the species, while the latter can cost just a few hundred.
A.Do the right thing and adopt your next pet.
B.The pet mills will share the benefit with animal shelters.
C.It means there are even more animals living in shelters.
D.When getting a new pet, don’t buy one from a pet store.
E.These are places that produce baby animals just like products.
F.They know the personalities of the pets, so they can help you choose the perfect one.
G.For animals, living on the street might have been a better option than going to one of these shelters.
The research by OECD that was analyzing the homework of 15-year-old school kids has shown that Italian children are busy with homework as they have to spend over 9 hours on it weekly. The other countries where children have to work over 6 hours on their tasks are Ireland, Poland, the USA and Australia. 146 According to the Cooper’s review of homework studies, 70% of students show better academic success thanks to homework they were completing. Consequently, we should not underestimate its benefits and now it is time to focus on the reasons why it should not be banned.
Additional practice
147 Sometimes the percentage of this knowledge is relatively low, but the requirements of the curriculum (学校课程) make teachers give many self-study tasks home for them to achieve better test results. Moreover, the duty to repeat the material learnt at the lesson contributes to its better memorizing and understanding.
It teaches students responsibility
When students only visit classes they have no idea how difficult it is for teachers to prepare for the lessons and may behave badly. 148 These features can be very useful for the future career too.
It teaches important life skills
When we say that students do their homework we add many meanings in this phrase. Pupils learn to manage time effectively, set priorities, and improve self-discipline. 149
150
If teenagers would have too much time for leisure activities, the possibility that they will be involved in some illegal or criminal issues rises greatly. Being busy with tasks they do not waste their time and spend it with the unmatched benefit.
A.It keeps students busy.

81.根据空前内容“It’s commonly thought that people get into bad financial situations because of poor decision-making skills.(人们普遍认为,人们陷入糟糕的财务状况是因为糟糕的决策能力)”可知,上文提到的是人们陷入糟糕的财务状况是因为糟糕的决策能力。而下文“In fact, several studies over the last decade have demonstrated that the cause and effect may be more complex than is widely believed.(事实上,过去十年的几项研究表明,因果关系可能比人们普遍认为的要复杂得多)”则认为答案不是那么简单。选项A“But is poverty really caused by poor thinking?(但是,贫穷真的是由糟糕的思维造成的吗?)” 故选A。
82.根据下文“Scientists first asked the study participants a series of questions that made them think about their personal income and savings. They were then asked to solve a number of puzzles.(科学家首先向研究参与者提出了一系列问题,让他们思考自己的个人收入和储蓄。然后他们被要求解决一些谜题)”可知,科学家们进行了一个实验,想弄清楚个人经济状况和解决谜题之间是否有联系。选项G“One study in the journal Science in 2013 showed that people’s abilities to solve problems can be significantly affected by their current financial situation.(2013年发表在《科学》杂志上的一项研究表明,人们解决问题的能力可能会受到当前经济状况的显著影响)”与下文内容一致,故选G。
83.根据上文内容“Those in better financial situations performed better at solving the puzzles than those in financial trouble. However, when the test was repeated without making the participants think about their own finances, the differences in performance between the rich and poor disappeared.(那些财务状况较好的人比那些财务困难的人在解决谜题方面表现得更好。然而,当在不让参与者考虑自己财务状况的情况下重复测试时,富人和穷人之间的表现差异就消失了)”可知,根据研究结果,我们可以推断人们解决问题的能力会受到自己经济状况的影响。选项F“This suggested that the distraction of worrying about their bad finances made the poor people perform worse than those with no financial worries.(这表明,担心自己糟糕的财务状况会使穷人的表现比那些没有财务问题的人更差)”是上文研究的总结,符合上文内容。故选F。
84.根据上文内容“In a separate study conducted in 2018 at the University of Texas, the brains of more than 300 people aged between 20 and 89 were scanned and analyzed for signs of good cognitive function. Among those aged between 35 and 64, it was found that those with better financial situations had healthier brains, including characteristics linked to having a better memory and a lower risk of dementia when elderly. However, in younger adults (those aged 20 to 34), there did not seem to be any connection between wealth and brain health.(在2018年德克萨斯大学进行的另一项研究中,对300多名年龄在20岁至89岁之间的人的大脑进行了扫描和分析,以寻找良好认知功能的迹象。研究发现,在35岁至64岁的人群中,经济状况较好的人大脑更健康,包括记忆力更好、老年痴呆症风险更低等特征。然而,在年轻人(年龄在20到34岁之间)中,财富和大脑健康之间似乎没有任何联系)”可知,研究人员进行了研究,以探究贫困和大脑健康之间的联系。选项D“Taken together, these results indicate that long-term poverty only gradually causes wear and tear on the brain.(综上所述,这些结果表明长期贫困只会逐渐导致大脑的磨损)”是上文研究结果的总结,该研究表明,长期贫困会对大脑无益。故选D。
85.根据段首句“It’s not difficult to guess why poverty might have these effects.(难猜测为什么贫穷会产生这些影响)”可知,本段分析了贫困为什么会有这些不好的影响。选项C“They are more affected by negative environmental elements such as pollution.(他们更容易受到污染等负面环境因素的影响)”指的正是贫困给人们带来的不好的影响,与空前“People who live in poorer conditions often have difficulty affording healthy food.(生活条件较差的人往往难以负担得起健康食品)”以及空后“And always worrying about having enough money to pay rent or put food on the table puts constant demands on the brain, leaving less processing power available for critical thinking.(总是担心是否有足够的钱支付房租或把食物放在桌子上,这对大脑提出了不断的要求,从而减少了批判性思维的处理能力)”内容上保持一致。

86.根据上文“How do you deal with your newspapers after you’ve read them? Sending your old newspapers straight for recycling is a waste. (你看完报纸后怎么处理它们?把旧报纸直接送去回收是一种浪费)”结合后文说明了废报纸的使用方法。故B选项“这里是我的一些重复使用它们的方法”符合语境,故选B。
87.根据上文“Gift Packaging. (礼物的包装)”可知,本段的方法是用旧报纸作为礼物的包装,故D选项“旧报纸是很好的廉价礼品包装选择”符合语境,故选D。
88.根据上文“Fruit Wrapping. Fruits ripen faster when placed in newspapers. They produce a chemical gas from their plant tissues that causes them to ripen. This gas gets trapped by the newspaper further exposing the fruit to it and therefore ripening them faster. (水果包装。水果放在报纸里熟得更快。它们从植物组织中产生一种化学气体,使植物成熟。这种气体被报纸困住,进一步使水果暴露在气体中,从而使它们更快成熟)”可知,本段的主旨是报纸作为水果包装,故C选项“类似于更常见的纸袋法”符合语境,故选C。
89.根据上文“Seed Germination (萌发). Newspapers can be formed into pots that are great for growing plants from seeds. The newspapers break down easily and have nutrients that get absorbed by seeds. This is especially a great option for fast growing plants. (种子萌发。报纸可以做成花盆,很适合从种子开始种植植物。报纸很容易分解,而且含有被种子吸收的营养。对于快速生长的植物来说,这是一个很好的选择)”可知,上文提到了报纸可以做成花盆,G选项中paper pot对应上文pots。故G选项“更重要的是,整个纸盆可以直接种植到地下”符合语境,故选G。
90.根据上文“Smell Absorption. You are certain to experience the terrible smell coming from your garbage can or your gym shoes. You needn’t use so much air freshener to mask the smell. (吸收气味。你肯定会闻到来自垃圾桶或运动鞋的难闻气味。你不必用那么多的空气清新剂来掩盖气味)”可知,本句旨在说明报纸可以用来吸收气味,与上文构成转折,故F选项“相反,使用高吸收性的报纸作为替代选择”符合语境,故选F。

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了沉默给人带来的好处。
91.根据上文“In a noisy world, the sound of silence is a gentle friend. Though it’s available to all, silence is rarely embraced. Quiet relaxes, restores and helps you a lot.(在喧嚣的世界里,沉默的声音是温柔的朋友。虽然沉默对所有人都适用,但它却很少被接受。安静放松,恢复和帮助你很多)”以及后文“The average person wakes up to an alarm and then turns on the radio or TV. Outside, planes roar and cars honk. In fact, too much noise can actually reduce your cognitive (认知的) function and lifespan.(一般人在闹钟响后醒来,然后打开收音机或电视。外面,飞机轰鸣,汽车鸣笛。事实上,太多的噪音会降低你的认知能力和寿命)”可知,上文提到了沉默安静的好处,结合后文的描述可知人们并没有注意到生活中的声音,故G选项“你可能对声音太习惯了,几乎没有注意到它们”符合语境,故选G。
92.根据上文“It is time to tap into silence, a necessary and forgotten natural resource. Just setting aside 30 minutes a day for pure silence is healing. Shut off your phone, turn off the music, and spend time alone. Similar to meditation (冥想), this precious time allows your brain to refresh cognitive functions including creativity.(是时候利用沉默了,这是一种必要的、被遗忘的自然资源。每天留出30分钟纯粹的沉默是治愈的。关掉手机,关掉音乐,独处。与冥想类似,这段宝贵的时间可以让你的大脑恢复认知功能,包括创造力)”可知,上文提到了留出时间沉默,本句为本段最后一句,故承接上文说明这么做的好处。故F选项“这段时间也会帮助你与内心的自我重新建立联系”符合语境,故选F。
93.根据后文“When surrounded by silence, your consciousness has more freedom to process information. This can lead to better decision making and more acute self-awareness.(当被沉默包围时,你的意识有更多的自由来处理信息。这可以带来更好的决策和更敏锐的自我意识)”可知,本句主要是在说明沉默带来的好处是有助于自我反思。故B选项“沉默有助于自我反省”符合语境,故选B。
94.根据后文“A recent report suggested that one in three people lose a whole year off their life due to noise. And this is linked to heart disease, sleep loss and high blood pressure.(最近的一份报告显示,三分之一的人因噪音而损失了整整一年的寿命。这与心脏病、睡眠不足和高血压有关)”可知,后文的报告表明,噪音会对人有害。故E选项“太多的噪音会对健康有害”符合语境,故选E。
95.根据后文“And then simply stay with it. When you embrace it and let it fill you, you are open to healing and wellness.(然后简单地坚持下去。当你拥抱它并让它充满你的时候,你就向治愈和健康敞开了大门)”可知,本句是在建议某种行为,后文则承接本句,指出要坚持下去。故D选项“试着走向一个纯粹安静的地方”符合语境,故选D。

97.根据上文“First of all, someone sends you a joke and doesn’t give you license to send it to your whole address book.(首先,有人给你发了一个笑话,但不允许你把它发送到你的整个地址簿)”以及后文“The same is true for emails that say “send this on” or that promise you rewards for it.(同样的道理也适用于那些写着“发送这个”或者承诺给你奖励的邮件)”可知,上文提到了收到了一个笑话,可推测本句承接上文说明,如何处理这种情况,故B选项“如果不是很有趣,就不要发”符合语境,故选B。
98.根据上文“Even if it is amusing or really interesting, stop and consider if it is appropriate to send it to others. If you have work addresses for your contacts, do not send it to anyone’s place of employment if there is any inappropriateness.(即使它很有趣或真的很有趣,也要停下来考虑一下是否适合发给别人。如果你有联系人的工作地址,如果有任何不合适的地方,不要把它发送到任何人的工作地点)”可知,上文提到考虑是否适合发给别人,且提到不要把它发送到任何人的工作地点,本句说明原因:许多人对他们可以发送和接收的东西有严格的规定。故D选项“许多人对他们可以发送和接收的东西有严格的规定”符合语境,故选D。
99.根据后文“Don’t worry. Please put the contacts in the BCC line, which means “blind carbon copy”. This way, all of your contacts are protected.(别担心。请把联系人写在BCC一行,意思是“密件抄送”。这样,你所有的联系人都受到保护)”可知,后文提到了别担心,可推测本句是在说明令人担忧的情况:把电子邮件发给你的整个通讯录。故F选项“如果你忽略了上面的建议,把电子邮件发给你的整个通讯录呢?”符合语境,故选F。
100.根据上文“When receiving an email, if it is a personal note, the polite thing to do is to acknowledge it, even if it is just a quick return email to say “thanks!”.(当收到一封私人邮件时,礼貌的做法是承认它,即使它只是一封快速回复的电子邮件说“谢谢!”)”

101.根据上文“Indeed, I’ve long regarded the sweatiness of my exercise sessions as a sign of how hard I was pushing myself.(事实上,长期以来我一直认为,锻炼时出汗是我对自己施加了多大压力的标志)”和下文“How much you sweat isn’t necessarily related to how intense (强烈的) your workout is or how many calories you burn.(你出汗的多少不一定与你的锻炼强度或你燃烧了多少卡路里有关)”可知,流汗多说明锻炼有效果看法是错误的。D选项“But it tums out I’ve been wrong.(但事实证明我错了)”此承上启下,符合语境,故选D。
102.根据下文“Larger people tend to sweat more, because their bodies produce more heat.(体型较大的人出汗更多,因为他们的身体会产生更多的热量)”可知,出汗和体重有关系,G选项“Weight plays a role as well.(体重也有影响)”符合语境,故选G。
103.根据上文“Another contributor is fitness level.(另一个因素是健康水平)”和下文“Research suggests that as your fitness level improves, your body’s heat-regulating system becomes more efficient, cooling you down faster and allowing you to work harder.(研究表明,当你的健康水平提高时,你身体的热调节系统会变得更有效,让你更快地降温,让你更努力地工作)”可知,越健康的人出汗越快,A选项“Surprisingly, fit people tend to sweat sooner during exercise than those who are less fit.(令人惊讶的是,健康的人往往比那些不健康的人在运动中更快出汗)”承上启下,符合语境,故选A。
104.根据上文“Don’t be misled by the loss of a few pounds after a high-sweat workout.(不要被高出汗运动后的几磅体重的减少所误导)”推知,空格处应该解释这到底是为什么,结合下文“It doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve burned lots of calories.(这并不一定意味着你燃烧了很多卡路里)”可知,这和燃烧的卡路里没有关系,B选项“This is simply water weight that you will gain back after you drink water again.(这只是水的重量,你会在再次喝水后恢复)”承上启下,符合语境,故选B。
根据上文“On the other side, don’t think that a low-sweat workout means you aren’t working hard enough or burning enough calories. It could be that your sweat evaporates (蒸发) quickly because you’re exercising in air-conditioning, near a fan or outdoors on a windy day.(另一方面,不要认为低汗的锻炼意味着你不够努力或燃烧了足够的卡路里。这可能是因为你在空调里锻炼,在风扇附近锻炼,或者在有风的日子在室外锻炼,所以你的汗水蒸发得很快)”可知,空处应该继续就出汗少做出解释,F选项“Or, unlike me, you simply may not sweat much.(或者,不像我,你可能只是不怎么出汗)”说明了可能本身就不怎么出汗,是出汗少的可能的一个原因,符合语境,故选F。

Rather than just eating when we get emotional signals. which may be different for each of us. be they stress, sadness, or even just boredom, we can listen to our bodies.(很多时候,我们都是在我们的大脑告诉我们该吃的时候才吃。 故选A。
108.前文“As we practice eating more healthily and a greater variety of foods, we are less likely to rely only on our comfort foods, and more likely to enjoy healthy foods, ultimately finding many foods mentally and physically satisfying as opposed to just a few.

根据下文“Why do cats like high places? 和“Why does my cat give “gifts”?
112.上文“Why do cats like high places? Wild cats were hunters, and frequenting high places meant they had somewhere safe to view their territory, watch for danger, and attack prey. (为什么猫喜欢高处?野猫是猎人,经常出现在高处意味着它们有一个安全的地方来观察自己的领土,观察危险,攻击猎物)”说明猫喜欢从高处看东西。下文“Our domesticated cats also enjoy watching the world from above, which provides them with a safe, calm place away from the activity in a house.(我们家养的猫也喜欢从上面看世界,这为它们提供了一个远离室内活动的安全、平静的地方)”再次举例证明猫的这一性格特点。
根据下文“Both wild and domestic cats are drawn to hiding and sleeping in contained areas. At home, it is often the humble cardboard box. Cats are predators, and a box offers a perfect place to hide while waiting for prey and also to pounce from, as only one entrance exists. (野猫和家猫都喜欢躲在封闭的地方睡觉。在家里,它通常是简陋的纸板箱。猫是掠食者,盒子是等待猎物和猛扑的绝佳藏身之处,因为只有一个入口)”可知,本段讲的是猫喜欢待的地方。由此可知, A 项“猫为什么坐在盒子里?”适合作本段小标题,符合语境。故选 A 项。
114.根据下文“Showing off their catch to you means you are a part of their family and they want to show you their hunting skills. (向你炫耀它们的猎物意味着你是它们家庭的一员,它们想向你展示它们的狩猎技能)”可知,此处讲的是关于捕猎方面的话题。由此可知, E 项“猫是食肉动物,如果被允许到户外,它们就会捕猎。”能够衔接下文,也是讲的关于捕猎方面的事情,下文是对该空格处内容的补充解释,符合语境。故选 E 项。
115.根据上文“Cats are well known for leaving us gifts that we may not want, such as lizards or mice.(众所周知,猫会给我们留下我们可能不想要的礼物,比如蜥蜴或老鼠)”和“Showing off their catch to you means you are a part of their family and they want to show you their hunting skills. (向你炫耀它们的猎物意味着你是它们家庭的一员,它们想向你展示它们的狩猎技能)”可知,猫给我们带来不喜欢的东西,但这只是猫想向你展示它们的狩猎技能。下文“Be sure to offer your cat a variety of toys to help them satisfy these natural hunting instincts. (一定要给你的猫提供各种各样的玩具,帮助它们满足这些自然的狩猎本能)”讲的是尽量满足猫的狩猎本能,猫是没错的。由此可知,空格处内容为不要对猫表达出我们的不满。D 项“不要表达愤怒,因为它们不会理解。”能够承上启下,符合语境。故选 D 项。

127.下文“For example, French bulldogs and pugs can suffer a number of health issues over their lifetime, including problems with their breathing and skin conditions due to their exaggerated features. 136.上文“Being happy can mean many different things.(快乐意味着许多不同的东西。)”指出快乐意味着许多不同的东西。空处承接上文,具体描述这些东西是什么,E项“有时,它是关于笑声,爱,运动和激情”符合,其中“Sometimes”和下文“Other times,”相呼应,E项和下文“Other times, it’s more about balance, calm, and quietude.(其他时候,它更多的是关于平衡、平静和安静。)”构成并列关系,故选E。
137.下文“They can help you bridge the gap between the times you are, say, having fun while being physically active or at a social hour with a group of friends.(它们可以帮助你缩小时间差距,比如说,在身体活动的同时享受乐趣,或者在社交时间和一群朋友在一起。)”
138.此处是本段中心句,即让你获得被动幸福的一个方法,由下文“Focus on the present moment, act purposefully, and allow your internal thoughts to accord with your external environment. According to a recent study published in Acta Psychological mindfulness can help ease emotional dysregulation.(专注于当下,有目的地行动,让你的内在思想与你的外部环境相一致。根据最近发表在《学报》上的一项研究,心理正念可以帮助缓解情绪失调。)”可知,本段主要介绍要练习正念,A项“练习正念”能概括本段内容,故选A。

【导语】这是一篇社会新闻报道,文章主要讲的是新加坡改善动物收容所条件,鼓励人们领养流浪动物的做法。
141.根据空格前“In the past, animal shelters in Singapore were horrible places. Most of them were very old buildings that were dirty, noisy and crowded.(过去,新加坡的动物收容所是个可怕的地方。它们大多是非常古老的建筑,又脏又吵又拥挤。)”可知新加坡过去的动物收容所是非常糟糕的地方,根据空格后“In 2014, the government decided to change this. Since then, 26 animal shelters across Singapore have been rebuilt or repaired with support from the government. The new buildings are so beautiful that some have even become tourist attractions. (2014年,政府决定改变这一现状。从那以后,在政府的支持下,新加坡各地重建或修复了26个动物收容所。这些新建筑非常漂亮,有些甚至成为了旅游景点。)”可知政府自2014年以来对动物收容所进行了改建和修复,所以新的收容所更令人愉快,空处承上启下,所以空格中应讲过去的动物收容所对动物来说可能不是个好选择,G选项中的For animals, living on the street might have been a better option than going to one of these shelters.(对于动物来说,住在街上可能比去收容所。)
142.根据空格前“In 2017, the government also made a new law that no longer allowed shelters to kill animals that didn’t get adopted.( 2017年,政府还制定了一项新法律,不再允许收容所杀死未被收养的动物。)”可知新加坡政府在2017年制定了一项不再允许动物收容所杀死未被领养的动物的法律,根据空格后“Fortunately, the larger new shelters can provide more space for the strays (流浪动物). More importantly, people will be more likely to adopt animals because the new shelters are more pleasant to visit. Some even have a space where people can spend time with the pets before adopting them.(幸运的是,更大的新收容所可以为流浪动物提供更多的空间。更重要地是,人们将更有可能收养动物,因为新的收容所更令人愉快。有些甚至有一个空间,人们可以在收养宠物之前和它们呆在一起。)”可知新的动物收容所可以为流浪动物提供更多的空间,空处承上启下,所以空格中应讲的是因为有了法律的保护,所以收容所里将会有更多的动物,C选项中的It means there are even more animals living in shelters.(这意味着有更多的动物住在收容所。)
143.根据上文“Fortunately, the larger new shelters can provide more space for the strays (流浪动物). More importantly, people will be more likely to adopt animals because the new shelters are more pleasant to visit. Some even have a space where people can spend time with the pets before adopting them.(幸运的是,更大的新收容所可以为流浪动物提供更多的空间。更重要的是,人们将更有可能收养动物,因为新的收容所更令人愉快。有些甚至有一个人们可以在收养宠物之前和它们呆在一起的空间。)”可知在新加坡动物收容所领养动物是有很多好处的,根据空格后“Instead, adopt one from an animal shelter. There are many reasons why this is better. The most obvious one is that you will improve an animal’s life.(不如从动物收容所领养一只吧。有很多原因可以解释为什么这样更好。最明显的是,你会改善动物的生活。)”讲了为什么从动物收容所领养动物比从宠物商店购买更好,空处承上启下,所以空格中应讲不要从宠物商店购买宠物,而是从动物收容所领养,D选项中的When getting a new pet, don’t buy one from a pet store.(领养新宠物时,不要去宠物店买。)
144.根据空格前“Third, the staff at animal shelters are very helpful.(第三,动物收容所的工作人员非常乐于助人。)” They know the personalities of the pets, so they can help you choose the perfect one.(他们知道宠物的个性,所以他们可以帮助你选择最完美的。)
145.根据空格前“If you buy a pet from a pet store, it’s likely that puppy and kitten mills (制造厂)will benefit.(如果你从宠物店买宠物,小狗和小猫的制造工厂很可能会受益。)”可知如果你从宠物商店购买宠物可能会让繁殖场受益,根据空格后“The parents are usually kept in small cages and made to give birth to the next generation rapidly and endlessly. What’s more, pets from pet stores are usually much more expensive than adopted ones. The former may cost tens of thousands of dollars depending on the species, while the latter can cost just a few hundred.(小动物的父母通常被关在小笼子里,让它们快速而无休止地生育下一代。更重要的是,宠物店的宠物通常比领养的要贵得多。前者可能需要花费数万美元,这取决于物种,而后者可能只需要几百美元。)”讲了繁殖场的恶劣条件和从宠物商店购买宠物的高价,空处承上启下,所以空格处应该讲的是小狗和小猫的制造工厂会受益的原因,E选项These are places that produce baby animals just like products.(这些地方像生产产品一样生产小动物。)

146.上文“The research by OECD that was analyzing the homework of 15-year-old school kids has shown that Italian children are busy with homework as they have to spend over 9 hours on it weekly. The other countries where children have to work over 6 hours on their tasks are Ireland, Poland, the USA and Australia.( 经济合作与发展组织(OECD)分析15岁学龄儿童家庭作业的研究表明,意大利儿童每周必须花9个小时以上的时间做家庭作业,因此他们忙于做家庭作业。爱尔兰、波兰、美国和澳大利亚等其他国家的孩子必须做作业超过6小时。)”指出一些国家的孩子完成作业的时间很长,下文“ According to the Cooper’s review of homework studies, 70% of students show better academic success thanks to homework they were completing. Consequently, we should not underestimate its benefits and now it is time to focus on the reasons why it should not be banned.(根据库珀对家庭作业研究的回顾,70%的学生表现出更好的学习成绩归功于他们正在完成的家庭作业。因此,我们不应低估它的好处,现在是时候集中讨论为什么不应该禁止它了)”指出,研究表明,做家庭作业是有好处的,由此可知,空处应该指出家庭作业很重要,引出文章话题,F项“同时,每个人都意识到家庭作业在学习中的重要性。”符合,引起下文,故选F。
147.下文“Sometimes the percentage of this knowledge is relatively low, but the requirements of the curriculum (学校课程) make teachers give many self-study tasks home for them to achieve better test results.(有时这种知识的百分比相对较低,但是课程的要求使得教师为了取得更好的考试成绩,给学生安排了许多家庭自学任务。)” 引起下文,下文“Sometimes the percentage of this knowledge is relatively low”呼应选项中的“Not all the information is grasped”,故选D。
148.上文“When students only visit classes they have no idea how difficult it is for teachers to prepare for the lessons and may behave badly. ( 当学生只去上课时,他们不知道老师备课有多难,并且可能表现不好。)”指出如果学生只去上课,没有作业时,他们意识不到老师有多辛苦,所以空处指出留作业能让他们提高责任感,G项“当他们被定期分配作业时,他们会提高责任感、准时性和表现。”符合,呼应本段主题“It teaches students responsibility(它教会学生责任感)”,故选G。
149.上文“When we say that students do their homework we add many meanings in this phrase. Pupils learn to manage time effectively, set priorities, and improve self-discipline.(当我们说学生做家庭作业时,我们在这个短语中添加了许多意思。学生学会有效地管理时间,设定优先次序,并提高自律。)”提出当学生做作业时,他们会学会一些重要的技能,空处承接上文,对本段作出总结,E项“这是为将来的职业生涯和完成老板设定的最后期限做好的准备。”符合,故选E。
150.此处是本段小标题,根据下文“Being busy with tasks they do not waste their time and spend it with the unmatched benefit.(如忙于作业时,他们不会浪费时间,而是会带来无与伦比的好处。)”
