It was August, the peak season for tourism. Olav Hylland, the owner of a local restaurant, was expecting as many as 500 tourists to visit and eat there. With a joyful heart, he jumped into a van, which he had just bought to transport cargo for his restaurant, and set off.
Leaving his home, he turned onto the main road with a tunnel 300 meters ahead. The 11.4 kilometer tunnel was the only way to access the local scenic spot, where his restaurant was located. Two years earlier a truck caught fire inside it and the tunnel's closure for repairs was a disastrous blow to Olav's business. The road to his restaurant was blocked and the stream of tourists halted. Although it was difficult, he managed to keep their staff on.
“And today will be a perfect day.” Olav thought.
Inside the tunnel everything went normal. But when he was near the end, Olav spotted an unusual light 50 meters ahead. Then he saw something burning.
Horrified, he stopped dead in his tracks. A tour bus was on fire! At the back where the engine was, dozens of tourists were stumbling towards him, getting away from the flames." They're going the wrong way." Olav thought, knowing the tunnel exit was just 500 meters ahead round a bend ahead of him. Then he realized the bus was now burning so fiercely that it was impossible for them to get around it.
As a former volunteer firefighter, Olav first had to raise the alarm. Grabbing his cell phone, he entered the codes with shaking hands. “A bus is on fire! Close the tunnel gates!” Both gates were shut to avoid the entry of more vehicles, but the thick smoke was pouring out of the bus in his direction under the influence of the strong wind. In no time it would black out the tunnel, choking and blinding anyone inside it.
There was no way the poor tourists could outrun the toxic fumes.
Every minute counted.

2.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy could ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer with my face buried in its screen. I texted with every friend who was lucky enough to have a texting plan. I ignored my family and my surroundings. Being connected was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when l learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. “This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special. We’re going camping!” His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh. It wasn’t my dream vacation, but I remained unbothered throughout the packing and planning. My mind was on my phone. I was so buried in the screen, in fact, that the first time I can remember truly looking up was when we drove across a bridge on the way to our campsite.
I stared out the window and saw redwoods towering above us, their branches threatening to pierce (刺破) the blue sky. I saw a roaring river, with slivers of silky black water appearing between crashing white rapids. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelled of pine. But none of that mattered to me. The reason I had looked up was for something far more serious. My phone no longer had service.
The last hour of the drive was increasingly tense. My dad announced that he had chosen a campsite that had no cell service, and that my phone would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world! I went through the full cycle of teenage emotions during the first day of the trip. I raged (发怒). I bargained. I begged. I flip-flopped (转变) from a depressive state to anger and back.
I went to bed angrily that night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.

Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens-her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing. Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

"Almost showtime!" Ms. Tuttle called. "Costumes on and smiles out!"
I frowned at myself in the dressing-room mirror. I was wearing white tights and a white swim cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes in my dance school's Winter Wonderland show. I'd learned in science class that no two snowflakes are alike, but all of us snowflakes were wearing the same costume.
"Grandma, I really don't feel like being in the show," I said.
Grandma Lani looked up from my ballet shoe. "Why, my grandchild?”Grandma Lani is Japanese American, and she has always lived in Hawaii. "You love to dance."
I used to love to dance. Then Ms. Tuttle gave the part of the Snow Queen to Christine Abrams. Christine got to wear a feathery skirt that fluttered like a cloud every time she twirled(旋转). And she got to do a dance onstage all by herself.
The snowflakes just ran to look like a blustery snowstorm. I sighed. "I don't like our dance. And no one would notice if I wasn't there. There are so many of us.”
“I would notice. So would your parents.” Grandma paused as Christine walked toward us holding a basketful of pretty snowflake ornaments(装饰品).
Christine handed one to me. "Break a leg, Jack" she said, smiling. That means good luck. The ornament had my name on it.
“Thanks. You too,” I said. It was nice of her to paint everyone's name like that.
Grandma Lani smiled at Christine. "What a beautiful costume!” Christine left, her skirt fluttering behind her.
I hung my head. Grandma took my hand. “What's bothering my Jack?”
“You came all this way,” I whispered. "And you won't be able to tell me apart from the other snowflakes.”

5.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was my first job, working as a temporary sales girl during the Christmas rush at Richardson’s, the finest jewelry store in our city.
The job was very important to me. Dad had passed away and Mother and I did not have enough to live on in those hard Depression years. I worked in the diamond department. My duties were to arrange the goods, keep them clean, and run errands (跑腿). It was interesting work that I enjoyed thoroughly.
As Christmas drew near, the days became more rushed, but also more exciting. One afternoon, Miss Allan, the head of the department, asked me to get her the diamond ring from the end showcase. I hurried back, with the ring in my hand when I noticed a man on the other side of the row of showcases. He was tall and in his early thirties. But it was the expression on his face that stopped me. He looked bitter, angry and confused. From his well-cut but worn-out suit, I could tell he was one of thousands trained for jobs they could no longer find. He gazed at the beautiful stones with the despair of a man whose right to earn them had been taken away. I had a sudden feeling of sympathy. But I had other things on my mind and soon forgot about him.
A few minutes later Miss Allan called for me again. This time for the clip (夹子) that went with the ring. The clip was at the very front of the window. I got it. But just as I was backing out, my sleeve caught on the corner of a tray (盘子) of diamonds. The tray started to fall, and six magnificent diamond rings rolled across the floor.
Down on my knees, I collected five rings with the greatest speed and put them in the tray. But I couldn’t find the sixth! I thought it must have slipped through the tiny opening between the showcase and the window. I ran around the counter and looked down. It wasn’t there. Just then, out of the corner of my eyes I saw the tall man moving quietly toward the door of the shop, a few yards away. At that moment I knew that he had the ring. He had been standing at the only spot to which it could have rolled. I reached him just as he got to the door.

The Water of Life
It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. It was a dry season that would bankrupt several farmers before it was through. Every day, my husband and his brothers would go about the tiring process of trying to get water to the farm. If we didn’t see some rain soon, we would lose everything.
It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have seen with my own eyes. I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He wasn’t walking with the usual carefree abandon of a youth but with a serious purpose. I could only see his back. He was obviously walking with a great effort trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever task he had been doing was completed.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful stride toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking carefully to the woods, and then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey. He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, very careful not to spill the water he held. Maybe two or three table spoons were held in his tiny hands. I sneaked closer as he went into the wood. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As l leaned in to spy on him, l saw an amazing sight. A mother deer with a huge pair of deer horns appeared in front of him, with a baby fawn (幼鹿)lying on the dry ground. I almost screamed to get him away.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn’t wear boots; or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother’s Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought,“This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift.”
Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn’t easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (微光) of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (一角硬币) .
Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother’s Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying, “You just wait here and I’ll see what I can do for you.,” As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.

Marty was new at school. Usually when you're the new kid, you lay low, but not Marty.
On his first day, he made a toothpick disappear. One second he was holding the toothpick, and the next second it was gone! Everyone was asking him how he did it. “It's magic! At my old school, they actually called me Magic Marty. " Marty said proudly. “Is he serious?" I whispered to my friend Brian. “I don't know, but that was pretty cool, "Brian said, still watching Marty. I knew Marty's magic was fake, but I just couldn't prove it.
Another time, Marty pulled a water bottle out of his bag, along with a cup and carefully poured water into it. Marty got a handful of ice cubes! Applause filled the hallway. When asked how he did it, he just smiled," Sorry, but that's the first law of magic. A magician never reveals his secrets. "
Well, he won't have to, I thought to myself. I'll reveal his secrets for him.
That night, at home, I sat at the kitchen table for almost an hour, trying to figure out the trick. " At it again, honey?” My mom watched me wiggle (摆动) my fingers hopelessly over a cup of water. "He's tricking people!" I cried. " Sounds as if he's trying to make friends. "My mom patted my arm.
Magic Marty had me stumped (把…难住), but the next day I caught a lucky break. At lunch, Marty was going on about how he could make things float. He had a ring in one hand and a pencil in the other. That's when I saw it: a thin piece of fishing line tied around the end of the pencil and attached to a button on Marty's shirt! Sure enough, he made the ring “float” by sliding it over the pencil and hanging it from the line. No one else noticed, and soon the whole cafeteria was clapping. However, I wasn't.

To celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday, Luke Fortune drove from a small town in central Oregon to Portland, and then he parked his car in a garage overnight. The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window was broken, and his backpack and laptop were nowhere to be found.
“The laptop was very important to me,” said Fortune, 21, who was studying to become a paramedic. “Every paper I wrote, all the programs I needed for my paramedic tests and every letter I was working on for job applications were on that computer.”
Two days after the theft, when Almazrouei was taking a walk outside, he was approached by a man who said he had a laptop for sale for only $200. Almazrouei was a 29-year-old man, an exchange student who had been in the United States for only three months. Since he needed a computer at that time he bought the laptop and took it home. After turning it on, he saw files and photos.
“I wondered who would sell a computer with all of this on it,” he said. “I realized it could be stolen.” Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner’s cell phone number and called it.
“A guy with a thick accent told me he had my laptop,” Fortune said. “He told me the story and said it was his fault. I thought it was a trick. So I told him if he really had the computer, he should take it to the police.”
Soon after, a police officer called Fortune, saying that a man had brought a laptop and given him Fortune’s telephone number.

10.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The Present
They say that blood is thicker than water, that our relatives are more important to us than others. Everyone was so kind to the old lady on her birthday. Surely her daughter would make an even bigger effort to please her?
It was the old lady’s birthday.
She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters or parcels on the rare occasions when anything came.
Today she was sure there would be something. Myra wouldn’t forget her mother’s birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work for the aged.
The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps—perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday, another decade lived or endured just as you chose to look at it. Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of color brightened her cheeks. She was excited like a child. She would enjoy her day.
Yesterday Mrs. Morrison, whom Myra had arranged for to light the fire and give the old lady her breakfast, had given the fist an extra clean, and today she had brought a card and a bunch of marigolds when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. The little boy, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints and said he wouldn’t go out to play until the post had come. “I guess you’ll get lots and lots of presents,” he said, “I did last week when I was six.”
What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new cardigan (羊毛衫). A cardigan would be lovely. Blue’s such a pretty color. Jim had always liked her in blue. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers .So many lovely things.
Paragraph 1:
She stood by the window, watching.

Paragraph 2:
Almost sadly she tore the envelope open.

Instead of burying myself in my phone, l focused on something else: my surroundings. I let the noise of the wilderness wash over me, animals and bugs creating a ruckus that was both loud and serene at the same time. My anger turned to peace, then little interest and, finally, excitement. Standing on the high campsite, I felt the weight of stress melt from my shoulders as I viewed the vast expanse that unfolded below me. The sight that met my startled eyes nearly took my breath away. For the first time, I thought camping in a place that had no cell service might not be so bad.

The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities. I hiked. I swam. I fished. My dad and I learned how to start a fire together after several false starts. We cooked together and I ate the sweetest marshmallows I had ever tasted. Dad told me stories of his life, stories I had never heard or perhaps I hadn’t been listening. When the weekend came to an end, I realized I hadn’t thought of my phone once. I hadn’t felt the need to be connected to anywhere else. It dawned on me that what mattered most were the moments I was sharing with just my father and nature.

Grandma was about to speak when something outside the window caught her eye. She grabbed my hand and my coat and pulled me out of the dressing room. It was snowing. Big swirling flakes. Grandma gasped and I suddenly thought of something. "Grandma, have you ever seen snow before?” "No, my Jack. In Hawaii, it snows only on the very tops of mountains." I had seen snow lots of times, but now I tried to see it differently. Like it was new. I saw snowflakes twisting through the air in different directions, sparkling and winking at us. So many snowflakes coming together to create something magical.
We watched the snow for a few more minutes, even though my toes were turning to ice. Then the wind settled down and the last flakes melted away. "Good-bye. "Grandma whispered to the sky. "I don't know when I'll see something like that again." "I do," I said. I took Grandma Lani's hand and pulled her back inside. When the stage lights came up and the music started, I spun and ran with all of the other snowflakes. I didn't care if Grandma Lani could notice me. I was helping her see a snowstorm!

Yet I felt he hadn’t come into the store planning to steal. Perhaps he had just wanted to get warm.
“What do you want?” he repeated. Suddenly I had the answer. Mother always told me people are generally kind. I didn’t think this man would want to hurt me. “This is my first job,” I said softly. “Jobs are hard to get now.” He searched my face and then smiled gently. “But I’m sure you’ll do very well in yours. May I wish you luck?” He put his hand out and clasped mine. “Good luck to you,” I whispered. He opened the door and disappeared into the crowd. Then I turned and put the sixth diamond in the tray.
