When almost everyone has a mobile phone, why are more than half of Australian homes still paying for a landline (座机)?
These days you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Australia over the age of 15 who doesn’t own a mobile phone. In fact plenty of younger kids have one in their pocket. Practically everyone can make and receive calls anywhere, anytime.
Still, 55 percent of Australians have a landline phone at home and only just over a quarter (29%) rely only on their smartphones, according to a survey(调查). Of those Australians who still have a landline, a third concede that it’s not really necessary and they’re keeping it as a security blanket — 19 percent say they never use it while a further 13 percent keep it in case of emergencies. I think my home falls into that category.
More than half of Australian homes are still choosing to stick with their home phone. Age is naturally a factor (因素) — only 58 percent of Generation Ys still use landlines now and then, compared to 84 percent of Baby Boomers who’ve perhaps had the same home number for 50 years. Age isn’t the only factor; I’d say it’s also to do with the makeup of your household.
Generation Xers with young families, like my wife and I, can still find it convenient to have a home phone rather than providing a mobile phone for every family member. That said, to be honest the only people who ever ring our home phone are our Baby Boomers parents, to the point where we play a game and guess who is calling before we pick up the phone (using Caller ID would take the fun out of it).
How attached are you to your landline? How long until they go the way of gas street lamps and morning milk deliveries?
24.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about mobile phones?
A.Their target users.
B.Their wide popularity.
C.Their major functions.
D.Their complex design.
25.What does the underlined word “concede” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Admit. B.Argue.
C.Remember. D.Remark.
26.What can we say about Baby Boomers?
A.They like smartphone games.
B.They enjoy guessing callers’ identity.
C.They keep using landline phones.
D.They are attached to their family.
27.What can be inferred about the landline from the last paragraph?
A.It remains a family necessity.
B.It will fall out of use some day.
C.It may increase daily expenses.
D.It is as important as the gas light.

Yellow-Purple tore a flexor tendon(屈肌腱), making it difficult to use her left leg. The little penguin was having a hard time walking and swimming.
Yellow-Purple lives with a large group of African penguins at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. African penguins are an endangered species. They are beautiful, black and white birds that are about two feet tall when fully grown, and they are very popular with the Aquarium’s visitors.
The staff at the Aquarium made a little support boot for Yellow-Purple from plastic. This supported her left ankle and made it much easier for her to do all the things that penguins like to do. Yellow-Purple was getting along fine with her boot, but then Dr.Jen Flower, Chief Clinical Veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, heard about 3D printing technology. She decided to use it to help better the boot.
Luckily, Mystic Aquarium’s Vice President of Education & Conservation, Kelly Marls, knew that Mystic Middle School had recently acquired a 3D Systems printer. Kelly reached out to the school and arranged a meeting. Sue Prince, Library Media Specialist at Mystic Middle School, and seven middle school students visited Yellow-Purple to learn what was needed, and then contacted the supplier of their 3D printer, ACT Group.
With ACT Group’s help, the students learned how to scan Yellow-Purple’s existing foot cast, then use that data to create a more efficient boot with sculpting software. The final boot design was printed on a 3D printer using multiple materials, allowing the boot to be flexible enough for comfortable movement, yet hard enough to support the injured tendon.
The students were thrilled when they saw Yellow-Purple walking almost back to normal. It was a great way to put science into practice.
28.What can we learn about African penguins?
A.They are very large in number.
B.They are dangerous species.
C.They are beautiful when young.
D.They are attractive to visitors.
29.Who came up with the idea of an updated support boot?
A.The ACT Group. B.Dr.Jen Flower.
C.Kelly Marls. D.Sue Prince.
30.What preparation work was done before the students got the ACT Group’s help?
A.They reached school on time.
B.They held a meeting to discuss the problem.
C.They paid a visit to Yellow-Purple.
D.They contacted the ACT Group for supplies.
31.What is the best title for this text?
A.The development of 3D printing
B.A penguin benefiting from high-tech
C.An effort to put science into practice
D.A software that can be designed

I was in Walt Disney World with my son, Daniel, who is autistic(患自闭症的), and at that time he was 7 years old. My wife and our three other sons were with us too. He was having one of his meltdown screaming tantrums(发怒).No one knew why. So my wife and I decided I would take the bus back to the hotel, and she would stay in the park with the other three children.
After we got on the bus, the screaming continued. My son looks “normal”. To the many people on the bus, he appeared to just be a kid screaming—or a spoiled child who did not get his special toy that day. It did not take long—less than a minute—before the screaming brought about stares, then glares from the other passengers.
To my shame, I found myself losing my temper at my own son. I was embarrassed, angry, and frustrated, for not being able to enjoy a normal vacation with my family because of him.
And just as the reactions of the other passengers were becoming most intense, a man seated just in front of me turned around to face me. I cheered myself up for his advice on how to raise a well-behaved child.
He said calmly,“Is he alright?” I said,“He’s autistic.” Then the man said,“It’s alright.” And he smiled. That’s all.
And suddenly, all the anger building up inside me was gone. I almost wept for shame at how I had felt a moment before. It no longer mattered what the other people thought.
I will never forget that man, nor his small, simple act of kindness and understanding.
32.Why did Daniel become angry?
A.Because he didn’t get his special toy.
B.No one knew the reason for his anger.
C.Because something went wrong with him.
D.Because he quarreled with his brother or sister.
33.Hearing Daniel’s screaming, .
A.the passengers were not satisfied
B.the passengers felt sorry for the author
C.the author comforted him with patience
D.the driver asked the author and his son to get off
34.What does the third paragraph tell us?
A.How the author helped his son calm down.
B.How the author reacted to his son’s screaming.
C.What made the author angry and embarrassed.
D.What the author’s life would be like without Daniel.
35.How did the author’s anger disappear?
A.The bus arrived at the stop near his hotel.
B.A stranger helped him realise his mistake.
C.His son stopped screaming and apologised to him.
D.He suddenly realised his son was an autistic child.

Last year, I spent my holiday in an unfamiliar neighbourhood in Lakewood, New Jersey. We rented a house so that some of our children and grandchildren could join us. Everyone in the area was super friendly, offering to come to introduce themselves to us and to ensure that we would make full use of their hospitality, whether to borrow something or to send the kids to play in their yards. We were excited and impressed and immediately began to see if there were any houses for sale in the neighbourhood!
The next door to us was particularly fascinating(to visit not to buy). In the yard, there was a tennis court, a swing set and various toys and games that were particularly popular with young children. The owner was also very friendly and invited the kids to come over and play.
They didn’t have to be asked twice. They played for hours on end. While we relaxed in our yard, perhaps a little too comfortable, perhaps enjoying each other’s company a little too much, perhaps forgetting that young children couldn’t be left too long without adults looking after them.
Apparently a small fight broke out between the boy of the next door and one of my five-year-old grandsons. My 10-year-old grandson immediately jumped to his cousin’s defense and pushed the other boy.At this point, the mother next door was forced to intervene(调停).
And the neighbour came over to speak to us. Now when I try to imagine myself: in that position, I imagine all sorts of negative and aggressive ways to deal with it—I would have been very angry and complained about the bad behaviour of these visiting children, and definitely sent them home.
What she did was quite opposite.
Honestly, I owed my thanks to the neighbour.

M: It’s too far. We can watch nearly any movie you want online.

W: It’s freezing here! Why is the air conditioner on?
M: I just finished exercising and I’m really sweating.
W: That’s no reason to put the air conditioner on “Max”. I’m turning on the heat for a little while.
M: It’s so hot outside, and it’s taking me a long time to cool down. If you’re cold, just open the windows. It’ll heat up again pretty quickly.
W: What should I do in the meantime? Wear my winter coat?
M: Go and sit outside. I’ll get myself a glass of iced tea and get you a cup of hot tea. How does that sound?
W: I can always depend on you to come up with the best idea of the day!

M: I can ask for one day leave from class, then?
W: Yes. And I’ll give you some medicine. Take it three times a day after meals.
M: Thank you very much.
W: You’re welcome.

W: Systéme? Wasn’t that the company on the stand next to ours at last month’s Fashion Exhibition?
M: Yes.
W: What does the ad say about the actual job?
M: Let’s see...getting in touch with editors...writing articles, making PR plans, oh, and developing a website!
W: Well, I don’t know anything about websites.
M: It would be more about the ideas for the site. I’ll tell you what, I’ll email the page to you and why don’t you read it yourself? I would apply if I were you. You’re always saying how bored you are here.
W: OK. I’ll have a look at it and we can talk about it later.
(Text 9)
M: Hello! My name is John.
W: Nice to meet you. My name is Alice. Have you just moved in next door?
M: I moved here a week ago. Have you lived here for a long time?

M: No, not really. I am from Australia, and I once lived in France. I came to America and I lived with a cousin in Hawaii for half a year. Where do you work, Alice?
W: I used to be an engineer, but now I teach mathematics at a college. What do you do?
M: I am a lawyer at a company.
W: Well, John. It’s good to meet you. I have to go now.
M: Why are you in such a hurry?
W: I have a class this evening, so I need to get to the college.
M: Oh, right. I have to tidy my bathroom now. My sister is coming this evening.
(Text 10)
M: It is said the famous Blang dish, Fish Soup with Pebbles, was created by some Blang fishermen in the wild. The story goes that, every day, Blang fishermen had to travel a long distance to catch fish in the river far away. The fishermen were very hungry after the long journey. So after catching the fish, the fishermen would cook the fish on the river bank. But they had few ingredients. The fish were just cooked with some salt that they carried. They dug a hole on the river bank and put some Japanese banana leaves on the bottom, using it like a pot. After filling it with water, they put the fish inside and began to cook the fish soup. They heated the water not with fire, but with the burning-hot pebbles that they put one by one between the leaves. Before long, the smell, mixed with the flavour of the fish soup and pebbles, would spread along the river. Surprisingly, the soup was no less delicious, even though it was cooked without using a pot or other common ingredients such as oil, onions, ginger or garlic.

写作
第一节
An agricultural activity
Yesterday, all the students in Grade Two and some teachers in our school visited a green vegetable base, where we had fun and gained a lot of knowledge on ecological agriculture. Upon arriving there, we were shown around the vegetable base, during which we saw a variety of vegetables. Some agricultural experts shared planting skills, vegetable growth processes and so on. The most unforgettable part is that we were allowed to help water plants and pick vegetables.
Through this meaningful activity, we have realised the importance of growing green food without damaging the environment.
第二节
What she did was quite opposite. She was so kind, friendly and calm. She spoke of their great pleasure in sharing their backyard, and of the necessity of monitoring our children’s behaviour. She told her children we were all their guests and that we should be respected and given special treatment; otherwise, as hosts, they were to blame. After that, these children got along well as before. The kids were immediately brought home but the next day they were welcomed to play.
Honestly, I owed my thanks to the neighbour. Though her actions may seem small, they were big in our eyes. The neighbour not only let all the children keep happy but also taught me an unforgettable lesson in dealing with relationships. From her, I learned some good skills in getting along with others. Small and kind actions can bring warmth to people. We should pass them on to our children and grandchildren.
