Growing up in the small town of Palmerston, Ontario, I had a dream: to work in television. However, it sounded like a dream that could never come true.

Thankfully, my parents had raised me to have a lot of confidence. With their help and encouragement, I applied to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. After graduating, I worked for Bell Canada for a while, writing and producing commercials. I soon decided, however, that what I really wanted was to be on camera.

I went to the CBC and CTV and applied for a job. They both turned me down because I didn’t have any experience. Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I found out the president was named Mr. Slaight and called him. I said, “I’ve heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o’clock on Tuesday or eleven o’clock on Wednesday for a tour. What would suit you better?” He stuttered a bit, then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but ecstatic.

On the appointed day, I arrived at the studio. When we sat down, he looked at me and said, “What do you want?” He sounded a little angry and frustrated—but very curious. “All I want is a chance,” I said. “If something on camera comes up at Global—I don’t care what—I want a chance to audition. That’s all I’m asking.”

Three months later, his secretary called and asked me to audition for a new game show. When I arrived at the station, I went right into an audition for a new show called Wintario. The following day, I was handed an airline ticket to Sault Ste. Marie to do the very first Wintario show.

From Wintario, everything happened for me. I hosted the National Santa Claus Parade for fifteen years. I did hundreds of television commercials, a number of movies, training videos, and travel shows. And everything came from finding the courage back in 1975 to make that one phone call.

    24. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 2?

    A. She was born to be confident.

    B. She failed to graduate in Toronto.

    C. She was good at writing commercials.

    D. She was not content with her first job.

    25. What does the underlined word “ecstatic” mean in Paragraph 3?

    A. Excited.  B. Amazed   C. Proud.   D. Confused.

    26. Which of the following best describe the author?

    A. Positive and creative.   B. Sharp and responsible.

    C. Curious and intelligent.   D. Courageous and confident.

    27. What is the text mainly about?

    A. The success of working on camera.

    B. The importance of parents’ support.

    C. The realization of an impossible dream.

    D. The transformation of an ordinary girl’s life.

    C

The current Broadway season is getting a surprise ending: Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan will bring to America’s most visible theater district a long-overlooked Lorraine Hansberry play, “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window.”

The two stars led a production of the play at the BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) that closed on March 24. Now they plan an unexpected and unusually quick move to Manhattan: The show will start previews April 25 and open on April 27, the final date on which plays and musicals can open and still be qualified for this year’s Tony Awards.

“The speed with which these producers are acting is completely admirable.” said the director Anne Kauffman. She first encountered the play as an undergraduate. “It just feels like it’s beyond my wildest dreams, because I’ve been thinking about the play for so many years.”

“The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window,” which followed the enormous success of “A Raisin in the Sun,” is about a couple living in Greenwich Village in the 1960s and facing challenges to both their marriage and their political ideals. Hansberry, died in 1965, just two days after the original “Brustein” production closed on Broadway, and the play has long been overshadowed by “Raisin.”

The revival received mixed reviews. No matter: Audiences flocked(蜂拥) to BAM, where the seven-week run, in the 836-seat Harvey Theater, was 98 percent sold out, according to BAM’s departing artistic director David Binder.

The Broadway transfer was made possible by the sudden failure of another show, “Room,” which was scheduled to open this month, but fell apart for lack of necessary costs. The Hansberry play will be staged at the James Earl Jones Theater and the Broadway run is scheduled to last just 10 weeks.

    28. What do we know about The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window?

    A. It will be staged at the BAM.  B. It will be directed by Oscar Isaac.

    C. It will be on at the end of April.  D. It will lead the Broadway season.

    29. How does Kauffman feel about the production of the play?

    30. Why was the Broadway transfer possible?

    A. Necessary costs were lacked.  B. Another scheduled show failed.

    C. The play received mixed reviews.  D. Audiences flocked to the theatre.

    31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A. Arts.   B. People.  C. Business.  D. Opinion.

Baidu has uncovered plans for an electric self-driving car with a removable steering wheel(方向盘), marking another step forward in the fast-moving robotaxi race in China.

The Chinese tech giant, the country’s answer to Google, showed the Apollo RT6, its sixth-generation self-driving car, at its yearly flagship meeting on Thursday. Baidu’s ride-hailing(叫车) service, Apollo Go, currently operates in 10 Chinese cities. The new vehicle will be introduced through that program sometime next year. Once regulators give the green light, the Apollo RT6’s removable steering wheel will legally be able to come off, a company executive said Thursday.

Baidu is selling its new design as a way to free up space for things like “extra seating, vending machines, desktops, or gaming consoles.” The company said its new self-driving car has dramatically lowered the production costs from previous versions, by about half. Those cost savings will be passed on to passengers as the company prepares to introduce the cars to its existing robotaxis around the country, according to CEO Robin Li.

We are moving towards a future where taking a robotaxi will be half the cost of taking a taxi today,” he said in a statement. “This massive cost reduction will make tens of thousands of self-driving cars available across China.”

Baidu made its name as a massive search engine provider, but it has also long spent money on self-driving technology in the world’s largest car market. In April, the company announced — along with another Chinese self-driving startup — that it would start letting people in certain areas book taxi rides without anyone behind the wheel. Other companies have showed off vehicles without steering wheels before, including GM and Honda, Google, and Mercedes-Benz.

In April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk told analysts that the automaker was aiming to start mass production of its own robotaxi without steering wheels or pedals in 2024. Baidu said Thursday that its new model was ready for production, but did not disclose a manufacturing partner.

    32. What can we learn about Apollo RT6?

    A. It needs a driver behind the wheel.

    B. It is serving in 10 cities at present.

    C. It will serve through a ride-hailing app.

    D. It has no steering wheel when it is made.

    33. Which statement is likely to happen according to Robin Li?

    A. Taking a robotaxi will cost people less money.

    B. Baidu will give up designing things like extra seating.

    C. Half of the production costs will be paid by passengers.

    D. The company will introduce the cars in small numbers.

    34. Why are other companies mentioned in the last two paragraphs?

    A. To warn Baidu of its competitors.

    B. To prove that the robotaxi is the best.

    C. To uncover Baidu’s possible partners.

    D. To indicate the future trend of self-driving.

    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. The Self-driving Car Frees up Space

    B. The Cost of Robotaxi Has Been Reduced

    C. Baidu Spends Money on Self-driving Technology

    D. Baidu Introduces New Self-driving Taxi to China

Like everything else these days, the cost of a family vacation is rising. With spring break season upon us, here are some tips to help families stretch their vacation budgets.

    1. Start with flights

Flights are often the biggest travel expense, so experts suggest dealing with them first.     36    . This includes searching for alternate airports near your departure and arrival destinations, and using flexible dates to show the lowest fares.

    2. Find alternative destinations

As with flights, be flexible about your destination.     37    . When Mexico beach resorts were expensive last Thanksgiving, Gunjan Prakash, the founder and chief executive of the Families Love Travel blog, and her family went to Paris. This year they plan to go to Porto, Portugal, for Thanksgiving — another place that is not busy in November.

    3. Avoid theme park pitfalls(陷阱)

For theme park vacations, “I always tell people don’t put money into your hotel because you’re never there,” Ms. Masarik said.     38    . For instance, in Florida, Disney World resorts like Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge start above $500 in early April, while the nearby Caribe Royale Orlando has rates from about $200, including shuttles to the parks.

    4.     39

Save money on food by eating breakfast in your room or rental and packing picnic lunches. Get creative with souvenirs. Instead of buying $25 T-shirts at each stop, have children select a postcard from each gift shop, then writing about their experiences and mailing them to relive the trip back home.     40    . “Emphasize the experience of the journey,” Ms. Grant of Families Love Travel said. “When it comes to traveling, the most important part is making memories and you can do that close to home.”

    A. Spend selectively and nearby

    B. Cut down the cost of souvenirs

    C. Use basic flight-search budget strategies

    D. Spending time outdoors doesn’t cost a family too much money

    E. Consider visiting more popular places during their low seasons

    F. Finally, you don’t have to go far to explore new things and to bond

    G. Instead, choose cheaper accommodations with easy entrance to the park

    Kali’s Gift

“Okay, it’s time for the gift exchange,” Mrs. Woodland announced during our Sunday school class. We had all brought presents to exchange and I was excited to see what everyone had brought. My best friend Sara’s gift caught my eye immediately. She had made fudge(法奇软糖) and put it in a cute bear mug. Rich Megan Perkins wrapped an expensive perfume, which I took when it was my turn.

Hannah made a noise when she took Sara’s gift from Lauren instead of the last wrapped one from Kali, who was known for bringing lame(差劲的) gifts. Lauren complained and asked to trade the last gift with my perfume, but I didn’t want to give up the perfume that I got fairly and squarely.

At that point, Mrs. Woodland stepped in. “Melanie, why don’t you trade with Lauren?” she suggested. I was about to tell Mrs. Woodland off when I noticed Kali sitting alone in the back of the classroom, looking sad with her head bowed. I suddenly felt ashamed of myself.

I hesitated, feeling torn between my desire to keep the perfume and my guilt over Kali’s situation. Finally, I spoke up. “Actually, I’ll take the potholders,” I said. “They’re really pretty.”

Everyone looked at me in surprise, but I knew it was the right thing and I should be kind to Kali, who deserved to be treated with respect and consideration. Later on, I gave the potholders to my mom, who loved them and used them in the kitchen all the time.
