The COVID-19 has led to a great demand for bikes and biking. Bikes stores are struggling hard to keep up with the demand. In the United States, bike sales have seen their jump since the 1970s. Sales of adult bikes in April of 2020 were three times as high as last year. The situation is similar in Asia and Europe. Around 90% of the bikes sold in the US are made in China. But because of the COVID-19, even the normal supply of bicycles wasn’t being created. That demand began to go up in mid-March, as people began looking for ways of getting around that didn’t involve crowded public transportation. Because biking happens in the open air, and the chance of catching the disease while riding is very low.
Biking has also grown more popular because it is one of the few forms of exercise allowed in many lockdowns. With gyms and fitness shut down biking fills a need for many active people. Families appreciate biking, too. With school closed and kids unable to hang out with their friends, biking is a welcome activity. Bikes are also practical. Many cities are seeing this as an opportunity to make their streets safer and greener. Cities around the world are adding mils and miles of bike lanes to their streets to encourage biking. New York says it will close off up to 160 kilometers of roads so they can be used by bikers and walkers. Paris has set up over 650 kilometers of new bike lanes. The United Kingdom plans to double its number of bike lanes. In Milan, Italy, 35 kilometers of roads have been metamorphosed.
Though many of these bike lane additions are temporary, and some people assume these additions seem to destroy the overall beauty of cities, if changes in biking habits become permanent because of additions, they could seriously cut down car traffic and help make cities a lot greener.
4. What can we conclude about the present bike situation?
A. It is more expensive. B. It is safer than a car.
C. It is in short supply. D. It is all made in China.
5. What does the underlined word “metamorphosed” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Repaired. B. Changed. C. Protected. D. Designed.
6What is the author’s attitude toward the bike lane additions?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Positive.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Increasing Interest in Biking B. Ride Bikes, Clean the Earth
C. More Bikes, Fewer Traffic Jam D. A Great drop for Bike Exercise
【4~7题答案】
【答案】4. C5. B6. D7. A
C
Hearing loss is unavoidable, but listening to loud music when you’ re younger can make it worse. To reduce your risk of hearing loss via loud music, learn why and how it can cause hearing loss, and just how loud is too loud.
Hearing loss occurs in four ways:conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, mixed hearing loss and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder. Noise-induced(噪音诱发的)hearing loss is a type of sensorineural hearing loss.
Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when your inner ear becomes damaged. In the case of noise induced hearing loss, most of the damage affects the cells of tiny sensory hairs in your inner ear.
When those cells get damaged or die,the electrical signal that your auditory nerve sends to your brain changes.
Noise-induced hearing loss can be acute or severe, and it can be temporary or permanent. You might be familiar with acute temporary noise-induced hearing loss, even if you didn’t realize what was happening at the time.
Acute temporary noise-induced hearing loss can occur from attending a loud concert or sporting event, going to a gun range without earmuffs or being near an explosion. It can make noises sound “stuffy”or far away, especially when talking on the phone or in a crowded room. Repeated exposure to those loud situations can eventually lead to permanent hearing loss.
Noise levels from earbuds and headphones can get as loud as 139 decibels, according to the journal Noise &Health, far greater than the recommended range of everyday sound exposure, which is 60 to 85 decibels. And the average level of noise from headphones, with the volume turned all the way up,is 94 to 110 decibels. For context, 60 decibels is about the volume of an average conversation, and 130 decibels is about the noise level of a rock concert. 85 decibels is considered the maxi- mum volume at which you can listen to sound for eight hours without damaging your hearing. So if you were to listen to music from your headphones for eight hours a day, listening at a volume louder than 85 decibels can cause permanent damage to your ears.
Unfortunately, the relationship between decibels and time isn’t linear. For every three decibels, safe exposure time gets cut in half, according to the CDC. At 88 decibels, you can only safely listen for four hours;at 91 decibels, just two hours.
8. What does the underlined word”it”in Paragraph One refer to?
A. Hearing loss. B. Listening to loud music. C. Risk. D. Loud music.
9. In which of the following situations is acute temporary noise-induced hearing loss more likely to occur?
A. Attending a rock concert. B. Participating in a heated debate.
C. Going to a gun range with earmuffs. D. Watching an explosion at a distance.
10. In terms of safe exposure, how long can you listen at 97 decibels?
A. A quarter. B. Half an hour. C. One hour. D. One and a half hours.
11. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A. Loud Music Damages Hearing B. How to Prevent Hearing Loss
C. How Loud Is Too Loud D. Music and Hearing
【8~11题答案】
【答案】8. D9. A10. B11. A
D
Imagine an island untouched by humans and without any large mammals.Colorful and strange birds of all shapes and sizes fly over forests and seaside hills. The sky is painted with endless clouds. Flightless birds nest safely on the ground, and seabirds cover the beaches. The sound of the bird song is overwhelming. The Maori named this place “Aotearoa,” Land of the Long White Cloud. The world now knows it as New Zealand.
When the Maori sailed their canoes across the Pacific Ocean from their homeland, Hawaiki, at least 120 different species of birds lived in Aotearoa. Eleven species of moa , an ostrich-like bird, moved freely, and the largest stood 11 feet tall. The Haast’s eagle dominated the skies with its wing span of nearly 10 feet. Because bats were the only mammals, Aotearoa was an actual bird paradise.
Unfortunately, the Maori overhunted the moa for meat. As the moa disappeared, the Haast’s eagle lost its primary food source. By the time Europeans arrived in New Zealand, both birds were extinct.
When European settlers arrived, they brought animals that attacked birds. These non-native animals exploded in number because they had nopredators. Birds also lost habitat as forests were cut down for wood and pastures.
Within a few hundred years of humans discovering and living in New Zealand, more than half the unique bird species were extinct. The whekau, found throughout New Zealand in the 1800s, was declared extinct in 1914. The piopio, considered the best songbird in Aotearoa, was last seen in the mid-1900s.
Thirty percent of the species now alive are in danger because of other animals and loss of habitat. Scientists estimate nature would take 50 million years to replace the birds lost over the last 1,000 years. New Zealand conservationists are working to save the threatened species.
12. What does the first paragraph tell us?
A. New Zealand is a paradise for birds.
B. Aotearoa does not really exist.
C. The Maori founded New Zealand.
D. No mammals lived on the island.
13. What does the underlined word “predators” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Partners. B. Killers. C. Friends. D. Settlers.
14. What mainly caused the disappearance of birds ?
A. Threats from man and other animals.
B. The arrival of Europeans.
C. The lack of food sources.
D. The increase in farmland.
15. What is the author most likely to talk about next?
A. Why local officials stop hunting.
B. What living conditions for natives are like.
C. How many animals have survived on the island.
D. What efforts conservationists take to guard bird species.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
