Nearly three quarters of Venice was flooded on Monday and tourists swam in the St Mark's Square A wave of bad weather went through northern and central Italy, bringing a 4-day-long heavy rain.

In Tuscany, 23 cm of rain fell in four hours, causing the Ricortola and Parmignola rivers to flood. The flood forced 200 people in Tuscany to evacuate their homes and move to higher places for safety. It is said many people climbed onto their roofs when rivers kept rising in central Italy.

Shops, houses and historic buildings were filled with water in Venice. And the government said 70 percent of the water city was flooded. High water in Venice reached 149 cm, the sixth highest level since records began in 1872. People had to walk through water, and some tourists in swimming clothes sat at cafe tables under the water.

Although the damage to the beautiful northeastern city is unknown, officials are worried about it now. "It's terrible. It has done great harm, " said Roberto Pucci, the leader of Massa Carrara in Tuscany, one of the worst hit areas I saw at least six bridges destroyed by floods. Flowers and trees were swept away. If there hasn't been a death, it's a miracle, "he told reporters.

The government called for more money to strengthen Italy's weather defenses. A defense to protect the city from the winter flooding, which has been planned for about forty years, will be finished by 2015.
