My first shopping in a general store was in Miss Bee’s when I spent the summer with my grandmother in New York.
“Go get them yourself” Miss Bee said, ignoring the shopping list held up before her nose. “I’m not your servant, so just get yourself a basket from that pile over there and start filing.”
It took me three wall-to-wall searches before I found the first item on my list―a pork can be placed between boxes of cereal and bread. Next up was toilet paper, found under the daily newspaper, and Band-Ads, found next to the face cream. The store was a puzzle, but it held some surprises too. I found a new Superman comic behind the peanut butter.
I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week that summer. Some ties she short-charged me. Other times she overcharged or sold mean old newspaper instead of a current one. Going to the store was more like going into battle. I left my Grandma's house armed with my list—memorized to the letter—and marched into Miss Bee’s like General Patton(巴顿将军) marching into North Africa.
All summer long she found ways to trip me up. No sooner had I learned how to pronounce bicarbonate of soda(小苏打) and memorized its location on the shelf than Miss Bee rearranged the shelves and made me hunt for it all over again. By summer's end, however, the shopping trip that had once taken mean hour was done in 15 minutes.
The morning I was to return to Brooklyn, I stopped into tell her that she was mean(刻薄的). To my amazement she laughed and said. “Well, I don't care! Each of us is put on this earth for a reason. I believe my job is to teach every child I meet ten life lessons to help them. Think what you will, but when you get older you'll be glad our paths crossed!”
I thought the idea was absurd until one day my daughter came to me with homework troubles.
“It's too hard,” she said. “Could you finish my math problems for me?”
“If I do it for you, how will you ever learn to do it yourself?” I said.
Suddenly, I was back at that general store where I had learned the hard way totally up(结算) my bill along with the cashier. As my daughter went back to her homework, I wondered: Had Miss Bee really taught me something all those years ago? I took out some scrap paper and started writing.
    34. Why did the writer spend a long time doing her first shopping in the general store?

    B. Going shopping in the store was a challenge to her.
    C. She was very aggressive, taking Miss Bee as the enemy.
    D. Going shopping was so fun that it was like playing a war game.

My best friend traveled to stay with our family last weekend. When she arrived, she went straight to the kitchen and, without asking, a teaspoonful of raspberry jam and some dried fruit. She wasn't being rude. I knew she would do this. We've known each other for almost 20 years. She can eat anything she wants from my kitchen. Indeed, I bought her favorite fruits and snacks at the shop that morning.
Our long weekend together was luxuriously(惬意地) simple. I was recovering from surgery and couldn't go to shopping malls. We passed the tie running errands(做杂事), going to the post office and collecting dry cleaning. We drank way too many cappuccinos. But we talked. About every little detail of our lives.
There's never been a quiet moment in our friendship. We've lived in different c ties for almost a decade. Reunions demand constant conversation. Our personalities are matched, to be sure, and a shared history is indescribably valuable. We were competitors in high school before bonding over a bad experience. Then we discovered the many interests that we had in common. Our friendship cemented(巩固) itself quickly. We stayed companions through law school, through our first jobs and our first boyfriends. We supported each other through break-ups and breakthroughs. Ours is a friendship for the ages.
There is something special about friends who know everyone and everything about you. They are rare. These are the people you've chosen to witness your life. They have seen the bright lights of achieve men, the depths of despair and the boring routine of the in-between.
It's special to unpack feelings and frustrations without wasting time filling in the blanks. As my long weekend shows, with such friends we don't have to “do”, we simply have to “be”. We drop the act, the performance, the public version of ourselves.
The special friendships are those which never fail to delight, the continuation of which is worth the extra effort, despite distance and difference sneaking into your separate lives. I had the very great joy of this reminder last weekend. I'm lucky to have found this friend, to see a future where her companionship remains. Being together is perfection.

From self-driving cars to care bots for elderly people, the rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat(威胁) to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations exit ng today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to change businesses.
“The next fifteen years will see a change in how we work, and a change will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, director of Work pace Strategy for CBRE Asia Pacific. A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates. But the report states, “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs—just changing what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research. “The growth of companies that have the speed and technological knowledge will directly challenge big companies,” it states.
A report by Pew Research Center found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and-robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. “The optimists pictured a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the reports co-author. “Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been people out of work, when we reach a few billion people there will be billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
    42. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
    A. The result of job reduction.
    B. The fast development of AI.
    C. The future life of elderly people.
    D. The influence of technology on jobs.

    A. Take the place of AI.
    B. Work in a traditional way.
    C. Take up jobs requiring creativity.
    D. Enjoy better and changeable workplaces.
    44. What can be known from Grudin’s words in the last paragraph?
    A. More people will suffer unemployment.
    B. More jobs tend to appear in the future.
    C. Job competition is likely to grow sharper.
    D. Technology will have less control over jobs.
    45. What is the best title for the passage?
    A. Are People Losing Their Jobs?
    B. The Requirements for Future Jobs
    C. The Challenging Life in the Future
    D. Does Technology Simplify Everything?

At six years old, I dreamed of becoming an artist. My mom knew this, so she gave the perfect gift to a first-grade artist like me. My friends and I called them “Stampy Markers(马克笔)”. They quickly became my treasure.
Unfortunately, my little sister thought they were amazing, too. For three days in a row, she would ask to play with my markers. However, each time, she would receive my firm “No”. Finally, maybe realizing it was impossible to take them from.me, she stopped asking. And I was able to leave them out in my room when I went to school, certain that she understood they were forbidden to her.
The first day that I didn't hide them, I got home from school and went upstairs to my room. Right away, I saw that my markers were not where I had left them. My rainbow-colored treasures were gone!
Suspecting that my sister might have something to do with their ds appearance, I searched the entire house for her. Finally, I found her in the basement and, sure enough, she was working on some rainbow drawing with my markers surrounding her.
“Hey! Why did you take them while I was away?” I started yelling at her.
    “Sorry...but I...” she murmured.
Before she could make any explanation, I grabbed the markers—at least the ones I could reach—and ran back up to my room, slamming the door shut behind me. I sat there for at least half an hour, but it seemed like much longer. Then, I heard my sister's footsteps coming up the stairs.
I opened my mouth, about to demand that she give the rest of my markers back, when I noticed a folded piece of paper being pushed underneath the door.
Once it reached my side of the door, I picked it up. As I read the words written on the cover, my anger quickly fell away.
What was on the paper was something that I would never forget.
I opened the door, reached out to her and gave her a hug.

    第四部分 写作 (满分25分)
What was on the paper was something that I would never forget. On the cover were those words carefully written “Best Sister Ever”, though crooked. As I unfolded it, I was amazed at what I saw—a picture, in which she and I smiled happily with hands holding tightly and a rainbow above. Moved yet guilty, I couldn’t help but regret that I had yelled at my younger sister, while she was making a so lovely gift for me. Leaning against the door, I suddenly realized my sister must be standing on the other side of the door, nervously expecting my response and my forgiveness.
I opened the door, reached out to her and gave her a hug. “I’m sorry. You are surely my best sister too.” With guilt and shame stirring in me, I murmured, “Could you forgive me?”, holding her in my arms even closer. She nodded her head, eyes twinkling with joy. Later that afternoon we finished the rainbow drawing together, with laughter echoing in our room. The “stampy markers” ended up running out of color or getting lost, but the memory of that day will never faded away from my mind, constantly reminding me that the greatest treasure of all is love and forgiveness you have for your family and of course, theirs for you, too.
