Growing up in Philadelphia, Lieberman started cooking with his stay-at-home dad when he was seven. His food-loving family had two kitchens, and he quickly learned what was the best way to bake his cakes. Lieberman improved his kitchen skills greatly during a year abroad before college, learning from a cook in Italy and studying local specialties (地方特色菜) in Germany, Spain and France. At Yale, he was known for throwing dinner parties, single-handedly frying and baking while mixing drinks for dozens of friends. Just for fun, he and some friends decided to tape a show named Campus Cuisine about his cooking. Lieberman was a real college student showing his classmates how to do things like making drinks out of dining-hall fruit. That helped the show become very popular among the students. They would stop Lieberman after classes to ask for his advice on cooking. Tapes of the show were passed around, with which his name went beyond the school and finally to the Food Network.
Food Network producer Flay hopes the young cook will find a place on the network television. He says Lieberman's charisma is key. "Food TV isn't about food anymore," says Flay. "It's about your personality and finding a way to keep people's eyeballs on your show."
But Lieberman isn't putting all his eggs in one basket. After taping the first season of the new show, Lieberman was back in his own small kitchen preparing sandwiches. An airline company was looking for someone to come up with a tasteful, inexpensive and easy-to-make menu to serve on its flights; Lieberman got the job.

For many year, Bruce Bexler dreamed of going where no human had gone before. He wanted to cut a path through unexplored lands and discover rare species. That might sound like an impossible dream, but Bexler turned it inot a reality.
In December 2015, he and a team of Australian and American scientists explored into a remote tropical rain forest on the island of New Guinea. They were the first people ever to enter the mist-covered region. "As time was limited, we were dropped in by helicopter. Once we were on the ground, there were no trails (踪迹) anywhere; it was really hard to get around," Bexler says.
Within minutes of landing, the team spotted a black chicken-like bird with strange orange skin hanging from its neck. The scientists soon determined that the unusual creature was a type of honeyeater — the first new bird species to be sighted on New Guinea in 60 years.
The honeyeater wasn't the only surprise for the scientists. They discovered more than 40 previously unknown plant and animal species —13 birds of paradise, 20 frogs, 4 butterflies, and 5 palms. "We were like kids in a candy store," Bexler recalls. "Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before."
The newfound species didn't shy away from the scientists. Two long-nosed echidnas-primitive egg-laying mammals — let the visitors pick them up and take them back to camp to study them. An echidna looks like a hedgehog and is also called a spiny anteater.
Bexler thinks the animals weren't scared because they had never seen humans before. "In almost all parts of New Guinea, animals are hunted for food, and because of this, they are very cautious of people," he explains. "This area gives scientists a place where they can go to study the behaviours of animals that have not yet learned to be afraid of people."
Scientists believe the area is probably the largest untouched forest in Asia. Local people called Kwerba hunt and collect plants from outer-edges of the forest but told Bexler that not even their ancestors had gone so far into the woods. The wooded area is approximately a 10-day walk from the nearest village.
Bexler and his team did not have enough time during the expedition to study the area completely. They hope to return and expect to record many more undiscovered species. "We just scratched the surface, Bexler says. "Anyone who goes there will come back with a mystery."
14. Which word best describes Bruce Bexler?
A. Adventurous B. Cautious C. Optimistic D. Gentle
15. What does Bruce Bexler mean in Para. 5 when he says the scientists "were like kids in a candy store"?
A. They were acting like naughty children
B. They were very excited about what they saw.
C. They didn't have enough food and were hungry.
D. They knew that if they kept searching, they'd find sugar.
16. Why did some of the animals allow the scientists to pick them up?
A. The scientists seemed to be very friendly
B. The scientists were skilled in handling animals.
C. The animals had no experience or fear of people.
D. The animals had been well-trained by the local people
17. What can we conclude about the area Bruce Beler explored?
A. The best way to explore the area is by helicopter.
B. The area has not been visited by scientists for many years
C. The area still contains many plants and animals unknown to science
D. The locals are unwilling to allow the scientists to enter the deep woods.
C
To know parents' influence on students' learning, researchers studied 438 kids and their parents. Before a school year started, the researchers asked parents to write down how anxious they would feel in different situations connected with math like planning their money spending or checking their house's size. They also checked their children's math ability and math anxiety in a school year.
The study found kids whose parents were anxious about math learned less math over the school year. And these kids didn't perform as well on the tests as those who hadn't been exposed to much anxiety. Besides, these kids also were more likely to become nervous about math themselves. But these kids only "caught" that anxiety if their parents has often tried to help with their homework. This is an example of good intentions having a had result.
The study's result appeared in Psychological Science. Erin Maloney led the study. As someone who has personally experienced math anxiety, she says, "I was always very nervous about math, not only taking test but also learning the new concepts. So I really tried to balk at math, including finding excuses to miss math tests and not wanting to do math homework. "It was only after she how math could be applied to her passion that she started to enjoy math.
Parents with math anxiety should still support their kids as the kids work on math homework, though. But they should know helping kids with schoolwork requires more than just going over facts and concepts. Parents should help kids look for ways to have fun with math, like playing math-based games. When kids have difficulty in learning, encourage them to bravely face it but don't make them nervous.
What can students do if they're already nervous about math? Maloney says, "My earlier study showed that students who wrote about their fears of math for 7 to 10 minutes before taking a math test performed better on that test. After the writing process, many students said their fears weren't such a big deal."
18. The 438 kids' parents were asked to present ______.
A. their attitudes to school education B. their opinions on kids' math ability
C. their ways to solve kids' math anxiety D. their math anxiety levels in their daily life
19. What result did Maloney's team report in Psychological Science?
A. Kids are more likely to be afraid of math.
B. Some parents pay little attention to their kids' study
C. Kids can pick up negative thoughts about math from their parents.
D. Parents should help with their kids' homework at little as possible.
20. What advice would Maloney probably give to students on their math anxiety?
A. Working closely with their math teachers B. Seeking help during their learning process
C. Sparing some time to go over their notes daily D. Removing math anxiety by admitting it to themselves.
第二节 语句排序(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)
将下列几个部分(A、B、C、D、E)按照题号排序,构成一个符合逻辑的完整语篇。

A. It turned out that the second group remembered the information better. In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹).
B. According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memory as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive (交互) memory. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
C. As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory—your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
D. In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow her research team wanted to know whether the Internet is changing memory. In one experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information while the second group understood that the computer would not save it.
E. Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive memory".
第三节 选句填空(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

What Makes Art Valuable?
Why do people buy art? An even bigger question is, why do people pay tens of millions of dollars to own art? Is it for status, prestige (威望), and approval from peers? One thing to remember is that value isn't only linked to its artist quality. 26
Provenance
In the art world, an artwork's value can be the result of provenance. In other words, who has owned the painting in the past. 27 The masterpiece went from a value of less than $10,000 when David Rockefeller first owned it, to upwards of $72 million when it was later sold by Sotheby's.
The Thrill of Auction (拍卖)
The salerooms at Christie's or Sotheby's are full of billionaires -- or better yet, their advisors. 28 They know when to bump up a lot and when to slightly tip the scales. They're running the show and it's their job to make sure the highest bidder (竞价者) has a shot and that values soar.
Historical Significance
Historical significance works in a couple of ways when it comes to determining the value of art. Firstly, you can consider the piece in terms of importance to art history in is genre. For example, a painting by Claude Monet is worth more than other more recent impressionist work since Monet changed the standard of art history and impressionism as a whole. 29 After all, art is often a reflection of the culture of its time and as it became a product, art was affected by political and historical changes.
30 Whether in a perfect storm, of passion and desire or a calculated risk of business deals and rewards, art collectors continue to spend millions upon millions upon millions each year at art auctions. What makes art valuable beyond the cost of supplies and labor? We may never truly understand.
A. World history also affects the value of art.
B. It's interesting to explore what makes art valuable.
C. It seems as though all of these factors combine to determine the value of art
D. Auctioneers are skilled salesmen who help raise those prices up and up and up
E. It's obvious that changes in polities have a historical effect on the value of art to different people
F. For instance, art describing beautiful women tends to be sold for higher prices than that of beautiful men.
G. For example, Mark Rothko's White Center was owned by the Rockefeller family, one of America's most powerful dynasties.
