    (陕西省西安市长安区第一中学2022-2023学年高一上学期期末考试英语试题)阅读下面短文, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的故事。
Michael was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and diligent. Recently, he had transferred (转学) to another school, so he had no friends in the new school yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.
At school, Michael could not pay attention to anything but waited for the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. The moment the bell rang, he quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among whom was Steven. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant (傲慢的) boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Michael was new, he didn’t know much about Steven.
When he went towards Steven and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Steven laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar?” Steven laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Steven, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it as Steven’s, as he remembered Steven showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

Sitting on the edge of my bed, I sort through old photos, thin smiles sliding across my face. I hold each memory briefly in my hands before dropping them onto the pile in my lap and searching for the next happy moment to remember. Each picture brings up feelings deep within me.
As I relive the memories, I can’t help but notice one photo in particular hidden deep in the box. The picture at first glance (一瞥) is lovely. The sun was shining and I was sitting with my arm around a happy-looking girl, her arm rested casually on my shoulders. As I focus on the happy girl, the smile that covers my face becomes a frown (皱眉). It is Amy Soule, my now ex-best friend. A terrible pang ( 一阵剧痛) of regret comes into my mind, and I feel tightness in my throat.
The change in our relationship began with different interests. She wanted to go to the mall and shop, while I preferred to watch old movies in my spare time. Soon the only time I saw her was when we exchanged a hurried hello in the busy school halls between the classes. No more notes were passed behind the teacher’s back. She found a new group of friends, and so did I. Before I had a chance to repair the friendship, she moved away, causing an uncross able gap.
I made excuses for it. But deep down I knew that was not the truth. I was just too nervous to pick up the phone and call. Eventually the gap grew too large to bridge.
I stand up and pull myself back into the now. Glancing up at my calendar, I remember Amy’s birthday is around the comer. In fact, we were born in the same room, two days apart. We started so close and ended up so far. This bittersweet memory causes me to smile despite my feelings of regret.

As we all know, it is difficult to start a friendship but it is even more difficult to keep one. Recently I’ve understood it better for I experienced both the pain of the potential of losing a close friend and the joy of regaining one.
In primary school, I was just an ordinary student, shy and a little awkward. However, Jenny was outgoing, confident and helpful, which made her popular among classmates. One day, when I felt upset for failure in an important Maths test, Jenny came to my aid, cheering me up, and we talked a lot. Since then, a close friendship has grown between us and she has been like a sister to me. Up to now, we have been good friends for eight years. We’re always together, walking to school, doing homework or just hanging out on weekends. Everyone will feel surprised if we’re not seen playing together. But last Saturday, what she did really made me feel heartbroken.
We intended to see a new film at the cinema that day, but in the morning she called me, saying she had a bad cold and wanted to rest at home instead of going out for a film. “Never mind, ”I told her. "We can watch the film when you’re better. ”
However, a horrible surprise hit me on the next Monday. A classmate told me she had seen Jenny chatting with another girl in a cafe on Saturday afternoon. Why did she cheat me?I exploded with anger and ignored her during school all day, without responding to her online messages. Actually, this stressful situation made me confused and sleepless in the night.

Amy and I had been best friends since primary school and spent almost every day with each other. Sometimes, other children said we were no fun because we were both very academic(学术的) and liked to study, but we liked it that way. Both of us were very hard-working and always got good grades at school.
I thought we would be like this forever, however, our friendship was on the rocks recently.
One Monday, we had a surprise math quiz. I thought it was quite easy and was not worried about the results.
I must have sounded very proud of myself after the quiz, saying how easy it was and how I was sure to get a good grade. And many classmates looked at me with admiration.
The next day after class, my math teacher told me that I had the lowest grade in the class! I felt so ashamed and couldn’t believe it; I must be really stupid to fail a simple math quiz!
Afterwards, I pretended to be cheerful and greeted others with a smile as usual, but Amy sensed something was wrong.
We went to wash our hands in the girls’ washroom before lunch. She patted me on the shoulder and asked me what happened. Seeing her concerned look, I had to admit how badly I had done in the math quiz. I begged her not to tell anyone else, and couldn’t help sobbing (啜泣). She held me tightly, saying she would keep my secret, and cheered me up.
However, the next day, I noticed that my classmates were staring at me as I came into math class, when I went to sit down, I was shocked to find a piece of paper on my desk that said, “...Stupid Sarah got a D!” I was so upset that I felt like crying.

    A Great Monday
Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my math test that day. I was confident that I would get a high mark. I left my house, and minutes later, I was sitting with my friends on the school bus. We were busy talking about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, a boy named Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped(绊倒) over someone’s foot and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan picked himself up, dusted his jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. It wasn’t long before the lunch bell rang. I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall.
When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans was torn down in the middle of my backside.
I froze(僵住了). I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my broken jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.
“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not to invite Lucy to the party.”
“She never even talks to me!”
Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her to get to know everyone.”
“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!” Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.
“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!”
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope (缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.
The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

Going back to school in September is always cool. Seeing old friends and making new friends are really exciting.
Rebecca was an old friend of Sheila, her classmate. Sheila liked playing football, and Rebecca had the same hobby.
There was a new girl in the classroom. Her name was Mary Brown. Unlike the others in the class, Mary was very quiet. She always sat by herself during lunch. At playtime, she didn't ask anyone to play with her, and no one asked her to play with them either. Rebecca was thinking about going over to talk to her, but that was when they would be able to join a football team in the youth league. Rebecca was so busy that Mary was soon forgotten.
The teacher gave out some homework. It was a composition. Rebecca decided to write a piece about Fiona, which is a cat, a Christmas gift from her dad. As a result, everyone liked Rebecca's composition.
At lunchtime of the third day, Rebecca was about to talk to Mary when Sheila stopped her with an angry look towards the table where the new girl was sitting by herself. Rebecca walked away feeling so embarrassed.
She told her parents what had happened at school. Rebecca said, "I want to talk to a new friend, but I don't want to lose my old ones." Her father thought for a moment and asked, "Rebecca, what do you think courage means?" Rebecca replied, "Isn't that when our soldiers go to war to fight for us?" Her dad said, "Well, yes. That is one kind of courage. But to do something that you are afraid to do is a different kind of courage."
Rebecca's mum reached over, holding her daughter's hand, and said, "If Sheila is really your friend, she will understand and still be your friend. Just do what you want to do."

Well, he won’ have to, I thought to myself. I’ll reveal his secrets for him.
That night at home. I sat at the kitchen table for almost an hour, trying to figure out the trick. “At it again, honey?” My mom watched me wiggle (摆动) my fingers hopelessly over a cup of water. “He’s ticking people!” I cried. “Sounds as if he’s trying to make friends.” My mom patted my arm.
Mazic Marty had me stumped (把……难住) , but the next day I caught a lucky break At lunch, Marty was going on about how he could make things float (漂浮). He had a ring in one band and a pencil in the other. That’s when I saw it: a thin piece of fishing line tied around the end of the pencil and attached to a bunon on Marty’s shirt! Sure enough, be made the ring “float” by sliding it over the pencil and hanging it from the line. No one else noticed, and soon the whole cafeteria was clapping. However, I wasn’t.

As Christmas was coming, girls were seen huddling (聚集) in the classroom and cheerfully whispering about what gifts to give to their friends. Giving and sharing is always the topic at this time of year. Everyone's face glowed with hope, expecting surprises. At lunchtime, Lisa and her friend Jasmine were talking about where they were going to spend the holiday. Jasmine blurted out, "Lisa, I've got a great idea. When I comeback from New York, I am going to bring you the best chocolate in the world." Lisa was greatly moved but embarrassed, "Um, I will just stay at home because my family cannot afford to go anywhere. But I promise I will give you the best gift I have ever had."
Lisa went back home for Christmas and told her mother about the talk with her best friend at school. "But I can't give you extra money because the Christmas food has already cost us a lot. You can buy a gift with the coins in your piggy bank," Mom suggested. Lisa thought it was a great idea and went to a gift shop and bought a pair of gloves with roses and golden silk with all the money she had. She had never worn such beautiful gloves. All she had was a pair of old ones knitted by her mother. She admired the glistening new gloves with smiley eyes, believing Jasmine would be very happy when she handed them to her.
When the holiday was over, Lisa happily went back to school and waited at the table for Jasmine to join her for lunch.
A few minutes later, Jasmine walked towards her with nothing in her hands.

I grew up in a big family with my parents, my elder brother and sisters. They did all the things that I should do, including cleaning the house, washing clothes, making the bed and so on, so what I did at home was eat and sleep. As time went on, I formed the habit of throwing my things everywhere. Once my family were out, what a mess my room was! My parents were worried about how I could manage myself when I had to leave home.
That day approached. This summer I was admitted by the best boarding school in our county. It was required that two students share one room. My roommate, Jenny, was a gentle and quiet girl. I was not very neat. On the contrary, Jenny was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Jenny got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out between us one evening. Jenny came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started shouting. She shouted back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Jenny answered it.
From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away that her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, crying.
Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone.

Susan lived with her mom in a small house. She was a kind girl who loved to smile and always helped people. Her dad died years ago in an accident. It was a really hard time for her and the family. But life must go on. She always remembered what her dad told her was that she must be a kind girl, smart and helpful. She missed her dad every single day. Every morning, her mother made all kinds of delicious snacks and sold them in front of their house and cleaned up their neighbour’s houses to meet their needs. Susan wanted to be a dancer. She loved dancing very much. But her mother told her that it’s impossible, because they had no money. Susan said she would become a dancer someday.
One morning, Susan played in the garden next to her house, alone. She was dancing happily when she saw an old man who walked too fast and suddenly fell down. Susan ran to help him but she was too thin and she could not raise the old man. Susan ran to her house, told her mother about the old man and they ran again so fast to help him. Her mother tried to ask him his name. Meanwhile, Susan called the others. His name is Tom. He was in recovery time from his heart attack weeks ago. Susan felt upset. She just felt so sad about Tom’s injuries. His face was bleeding. Susan gave her mom a bottle of water to wash the sand and blood from his face. He said thank you to Susan and her mom. A few days later, Tom came to Susan’s school, found the headmaster and handed him a letter of commendation (赞扬), telling him how Susan had helped him.

Last week, I watched an old couple when they walked through a thrift (节俭) store. I had just dropped of a bag of clothes. When I got the opportunity, I stopped by just to look through the old records that had music recorded on them.
Anyway, this couple moved slowly in search of items they had on a list they held tight in hand. They didn’t say much, but occasionally talked with the other and picked an item up. “No, it’s not suitable for her and she dislikes it,” one would say and move on.
My curiosity always got the best of me until I satisfied it by asking. “Can I help you find something?” I asked. They stopped, looking at me. Then the man said, “We are looking for old things that look new. Every new year in the past we tried to begin the year with new things. It was a goal to surround ourselves with things fresh so that we had new hopes for the year ahead. More importantly, we can give some gifts to Eva.”
“Eva? Who is she?” I asked. “She is a lovely 10-year-old girl we adopted. Her parents died in a traffic accident. She always wants to be a singer,” the man replied. I felt sad and said, “I’m sorry for the girl. Can you tell me how does your search work out?” The lady sighed and said, “It took a long time for us to find a special gift, but we discovered it was in vain (徒劳的).”

In November, 2022 a girl named Lucy, 6, sent a letter to an organisation in California asking if she could own a unicorn (独角兽). “Dear Madam/Sir, I wonder if I can have a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one,” Lucy wrote to the organisation. “I’m looking forward to your early reply.”
Soon the organisation answered it with a supportive unicorn license (许可证) and certificate. The letter Lucy received noted that she must take good care of the unicorn.“It is always meaningful to hear from young people who thoughtfully consider the requirements of providing a loving home for animals,” the director of the organisation, Mary, wrote in response to Lucy. “I praise your spirit of being responsible for pets to ask our permission to keep a unicorn in your backyard,” the letter continued.
The organisation in California started a Lucy’s Magical Unicorn Fund (基金会) on December 16, 2022. Its aim was to encourage kind people to get a unicorn license of their own while providing money that helps animals in trouble.
“There was so much public support and so many good wishes to Lucy, and we felt people would like a way to praise her love for animals because we received so many letters of support,” Mary wrote in a December 20 email. Mary said that the organisation received “many requirements for unicorn licenses” from people who want to give them as gifts.
“So, it seemed to be a good way for people to personally take part in this activity, while supporting the care of animals at our animal care centers,” Mary wrote about Lucy’s Magical Unicorn Fund.
Special unicom licenses will be sent to those who’ give away at least $25, according to the organisation’s website. The organisation provides care for more than 45,000 animals each year across its seven animal centers.

Only eight days until Thanksgiving and there wasn’t going to be enough money to buy the necessary things for the holiday. I promised my three sons that we’d love a nice family dinner in our new home, unlike the prior year when we canceled Thanksgiving to deal with the loss of their father.
It was hard to put everyday food on the table for three growing boys with the little I earned from work, but I promised a good meal. We looked forward to a day of good eating! But there was only enough bread in the house, two chicken breasts and a few other things.
The next day, I met my friend and neighbor, Aleta, at her home. Her four boys and my kids were good friends. Her husband had recently lost his job due to illness, and they suffered financial difficulties as well.
We stood there talking about our coming Thanksgiving dinner, and agreed to make a Thanksgiving feast together. Then children of the two families headed out and found a few neighbors who helped them earn enough to purchase most of the items they set out for, except the turkey.
Four days before Thanksgiving, I managed to buy a turkey and finished baking the cookies. My friend called with news about a family living in our community who needed help with food and bills. The father had been in an accident and unable to work for the last few months. We didn’t know the family well, but my friend and I went to visit them with our holiday cookies, hoping to help in some way. In no time, her kids ate the cookies.
While everyone chatted. I went into their kitchen. The cupboards were almost bare. I was shocked. Aleta and I left the house, desperately wanting to help. Without a word, we looked at each other, asking ourselves the same question. Could we sacrifice a little more and give the family our holiday meal?

This is an unbelievable real Christmas story: one of courage, life and passing on love.
Twenty-five years ago, Ray Anderson, a single parent with a one-year-old son, was returning home after giving out gifts to the needy people on Christmas Eve when he witnessed a terrible accident which took place when the driver of a truck ran a red light and collided (碰撞)with the car of Sandra Jenkins. The influence of the collision killed Sandra instantly, but her three-month-old daughter was left trapped upside down in the burning car seemingly doomed to a fiery tomb.
While others looked on in horror, Anderson jumped out of his car and crawled (爬)into the car through the broken window to try to free the baby. Seconds later, the car was totally on fire, but Anderson was unexpectedly able to pull the baby to safety. While the child came out of the accident with no injuries, Anderson suffered third degree burns over 80 percent of his body.
Two days later, Anderson died, but his heroic act was published widely in the media. Anderson’s son was soon raised by relative, and the family moved to the East Coast.
The most unbelievable part of this story unfolded only last week. Karen and her fiancé(未婚夫), Aaron, were looking through some old boxes in the basement of Karen’s home when they came across some old newspapers. “This is me when I was a newborn baby. My mother was busy with some volunteer work when the accident happened. I was rescued from a burning car, but my mother died in the accident,” explained Karen. Although Aaron knew Karen’s mother had died years earlier, he never fully understood the situation until he started to skim over the newspaper article. Karen continued to sort through some old books when saw Aaron absorbed in the details of the accident.

Many years ago, I was at a girls’ school and our teacher made all the girls in the class sit next to someone different every day.
On one of the days, my teacher paired Madhuri, who I had never talked to, and me to sit next to each other. I noticed that she seemed very anxious. I asked her what was wrong. She remained silent at first, but eventually, she told me that she had three sisters in her family and that her father couldn’t afford school books for all of them.
My primary school was strict, as was the standard then, and if you didn’t have your school books the teacher would make you leave the class. Madhuri was very anxious that day because she thought that the teacher would tell her to leave the class. When the teacher saw that she didn’t have the books, he told Madhuri that she couldn’t attend class for a week.
Madhuri was very upset. I felt so bad when I saw her pain that I decided to help her. I went to speak to her and offered to buy the books for her. She refused my offer to help. She had very strong principles and she would never accept things bought by others.
When I got home from school I told my mom the story. She said that it was good that I had tried to help but I should stop worrying about it because there was nothing more that I could do if she had refused my offer to help. I couldn’t stop worrying about it though.

As is known to all, the traffic is very poor and heavy. The bus or the train is really crowded. Every time I go home from my company or leave home for my company, I have to accept such a hard experience though I have been used to it.
On a cold December morning in 2020, I boarded a bus with my four bags which were large. Luckily, there were two empty seats left. About one hour later, a well-dressed young guy got on and took the seat next to mine. I was cautious. I would often come across guys who were eager to talk to a girl travelling on her own. So I was not surprised when he spoke up.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“Rampur Bushehr,” I replied briefly and put on my earphones to enjoy some music or to avoid talking with him. He did not bother me after that as if he had known my idea.
It started to rain and cold water was dropping through the roof right on to my lap. Seeing that, the guy emptied a plastic shopping bag full of clothes, which he pushed into his travel bag. He then handed me the plastic bag. I accepted it with a sheepish (困窘的) “thanks” before spreading it on my lap.
Minutes later, the bus broke down! The conductor announced we would have to move to another bus that would reach us shortly, and that there would be no more buses after that, since there had been heavy snowfalls. All the passengers of the bus got off and stood on the side of the road, ready to rush into the next bus. A couple in Virginia Beach is forever thankful to two surfers (冲浪者) who also happen to be health care workers. “We’d like to express our appreciation to the heroes who saved Todd on that beach, ”the couple said.
Todd, 59, and Donna, 58, woke up early on October 2 to go for a bike ride and take pictures of the sunrise. While walking barefoot along the shoreline and enjoying the sights, Todd suddenly fell down.
Donna thought her husband was joking. But she quickly realized this was no laughing matter. Todd’s heart stopped beating and he turned blue. “I called his name and cried for help:’Help! Please help Todd’, ”Donna said later.
Tyler Volpe, a surfer, was in the water when Todd fell down. Volpe is also a physician assistant. He heard Donna’s cries for help. “I knew it wasn’t normal, ”he said. “I came flying out of the water. ”
Paul Roy, 24, a health care worker at a local hospital, was also surfing that morning. Volpe started chest compressions (按压) while Roy breathed into Todd’s mouth. Then, they switched positions, A woman on the beach put her arm around Donna and prayed with her. “I really thought he was dead, ”Donna said.
As Roy and Volpe continued CPR, Todd breathed a few times. The sea water was starting to come in. Other surfers used their boards to form a wall between the rescue effort and the water.
“They kept him alive until the ambulance got there, ”Donna said. “It could have been two minutes; it could have been 10 days. I was watching my life end with his. ”

I worked day and night as a taxi driver, and I always dreamed of owning my own taxi company. One night, I took an order at 11:00 pm. When I arrived at the building, it was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. In this situation, many drivers would just wait for a while and then left.
But I had seen too many people who depended on taxis as their means of transportation. I thought this passenger might be someone who needed my help. So I walked into the building and knocked at the door.
“Just a minute,” answered an elderly voice. I could hear something being pulled across the floor. After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her 70s stood before me. She was wearing a traditional dress and an old hat, like somebody out of a movie in the 1940s. By her side was a small suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. I found nobody else. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos.
I helped take her suitcase out to the taxi, and then returned to help the elderly woman. She seemed a little weak and took my arm. We walked slowly towards the taxi. The elderly woman kept thanking me for my kindness. I told her, “It’s nothing. I just try to treat my passengers the way I want my mother to be treated.” She said I was the best man she had ever seen in the world. And she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive me to the hospital?” I answered quickly, “OK!” She told me that she was ill and needed to stay in hospital for several days, but her sons were in other provinces and couldn’t get home in time. I listened to what she said carefully and kept comforting her.
When we got to the hospital, I went to the emergency room with her. After half an hour, she was admitted into the hospital room. At midnight, I rushed home and completely forgot the taxi fare.

“Jane, hurry and get your coat. We’re going to the store,” Dad said. I ran to do as my father instructed. A shopping trip with Dad was a rare experience. He traveled a great deal of time, and I valued the unexpected chance to be alone with him. Once in the car, I asked, “Where are we going?” Dad only smiled, “You’ll see.” To my surprise, we didn’t take the usual turn to the area’s one department store.
Instead, we turned down an alley (小巷) where small houses lined the road. Dad parked the car, got out, and walked to the front door of the first house on the street. Within a few minutes, he returned with Connor, a boy from our school. I tried to hide my disappointment. I had wanted my father to accompany me. At that time, it looked as though I would have to share him with someone else. “Hi, Connor,” I said, only just able to keep the upset and unhappiness from my voice.
“Hi,” he replied. He looked as uncomfortable as I felt. Then, Dad drove to the store. Once inside, he led us to the boys’ clothing section. I was much unhappier. Not only did I have to share my dad, but I also had to look at boring clothes. “Connor will give a poem-reading performance in your school’s 40th anniversary celebration next Friday,” Dad said. “He’ll need a suit to wear for this big occasion. So we’re here.” Connor looked with wonder at the row of clothes.

“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying "HAPPY BIRTHDAY'', and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You're welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn't only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades."
“Of course I will." I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn't even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn't pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn't get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A's and B's on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn't believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.

Once there lived a girl named Melanie. The little girl was living with a dream. She wanted to be a ballet dancer. Her body was very flexible and she had a strong will power. Melanie’s parents never knew of the great dancing skills their daughter had until one day, they saw the little girl dancing with the beautiful steps of a ballerina.
“Isn’t it strange? Melanie is dancing so well without any formal training!” the mother said.
“We must give her ballet lessons to help her improve her skills,” her father said.
The following day, Melanie’s parents took her to a local dance training school. The teacher asked Melanie to dance. The little girl was happy and showed some of her favorite dance steps. However, the teacher didn’t seem interested in her performance.
“That’s OK. You can leave now!”the teacher said.
Melanie was shocked to hear this. So were her parents. They couldn’t believe their ears.
“The girl is common. She does not have the possibility to become a ballerina, ”the dance teacher said. “Don’t let her waste her time dreaming of becoming a dancer.”

In a story that fits a Hollywood script (剧本), two strange neighbors connected through music and formed an unusual bond by playing the piano together through a wall.
Giorgio Lo Porto is an Italian living in London, England. While he’s never met his neighbor, he knows his new neighbor is a pianist.
His curiosity sets off a series of online videos recording their growing friendship.
Lo Porto then says that he’s left a note telling his neighbor that he loved his music and included a request: Could you play “My Heart Will Go On?” As music starts playing in the background, he posts “I guess it’s a yes.”
In the next video, not only does Lo Porto play the piano, he’s also invited his neighbor to a duet (二重奏). Although he hasn’t played for a while, it appears that his relationship with his neighbor lights up his lost passion for the instrument (乐器).
In another video, Lo Porto begins playing “River Flows Through You,” and stops. At the very moment, his neighbor picks up where he left off.
And just like that, the two started a weekly duet “meet up,” as they played back and forth through the wall.
With every note, Lo Porto’s curiosity about his neighbor’s identity (身份) increased, until one day he took the leap to meet him.
With much expectation and thousands of fascinated online users, Lo Porto revealed (透漏) that he finally met his melodic neighbor.
“Well, today I have met my neighbor. It was better than expected. His name is Emil...” Lo Porto posted.
It turns out that Emil is a 87-year-old native of Poland who recently lost his wife to COVID.He was in between homes as he waited for his house to be sold.
As Lo Porto explained, Emil played the piano at 2 PM every weekend “because his wife loved it.” Playing it “keeps him closer to his wife and away from the painful reminder” of her absence. Lo Porto promised Emil that he would continue their duets till he moved out.

“What will we be singing for the contest this year?” a student from my high school choir,a singing team, asked eagerly.
I hesitated this moment. “I was thinking,” I said, “maybe we’ll skip the contest and just work hard on the concerts this year. ”
    “NO!” the kids protested.
“We’ve got to go to contest!”
    “In Class A.”
    “It’s tradition!”
This was true. Awards lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a change in educational policies, with an emphasis on academics, had reduced my choir to a mere thirty-two students. My section leaders had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with young, inexperienced kids who couldn’t read music, couldn’t hold their parts, and could sing only a simple melody or song.
“Maybe we could enter Class B this year,” I suggested, knowing even that would be a near-impossible mission.
“No!” the kids screamed. “Class A!”
I shook my head. “Class A is extremely difficult. ”
“We can do it!” they shouted. “We can do it!”
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks.
But that didn’t happen. If anything, the class became more fixed. Every day they begged and begged and they insisted. Because I had to protect their self-pride I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good enough. My efforts to prevent their eagerness, by showing them a difficult piece of music from the contest list, simply ended with, “It’s okay, Mrs. Pliszka, we’ll get it. ”

    冒险精神

    (安徽省马鞍山市2022-2023学年高一上学期期末教学质量监测英语试题)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One day, Daddy Bear suggested having a really wild camping. “What is a really wild camping? Is it an adventure?” wondered Dudu. “Yes! Everything in the city is too comfortable; we need to go to wild to have an experience!” replied Daddy Bear.
“Can I play with my toy cars there? And can I watch cartoon there?” Dudu was a little worried. “There are more interesting things there! We can bathe in the clear pool, taste delicious wild fruits, fish by the clear lake and fall asleep in the quiet night.” Daddy described it in excitement. “It’s wonderful!” Dudu was deeply attracted to the description. “But maybe it’s dangerous!” Mama Bear worried. “Mummy always worries so much! I want to be an explorer this time!” Dudu thought.
Dudu and his families started off. First, they needed to cross a single-log (独木的) bridge. This single-log bridge was the only way to the forest. Seeing the rushed water under the single-log bridge, Dudu had a little regret to come here with Daddy Bear. “Don’t be afraid!” encouraged Daddy Bear. “Just go ahead, don’t look at the river!”
Dudu tried to toe (用脚尖走) on the bridge, and the bridge started to shake. Dudu was so scared (害怕的) that he kept his body unmoved. “The bridge frightens you on purpose! Just go ahead, the bridge won’t shake!” Daddy said behind Dudu. Dudu continued to go ahead. “Ha-ha! It’s true! The bridge really doesn’t shake anymore!” Dudu cried happily, going faster.

    自然灾害

    (湖北省华中师范大学第一附属中学2022-2023学年高一上学期期末考试英语试题)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was February 16, 2019, at 8 a. m. when my girlfriend, Jessika, and I arrived at Utah’s Zion National Park. We’d traveled from our home in Mesa, Arizona, to hike the nine-mile-long Subway Trail, so named because of its amazing tunnel-shaped canyon (峡谷). Halfway through our hike, which included climbing over rocks and walking across streams, the sunshine gave way to a light snow. Soon after, we reached the red-colored walls of the Subway Trail. A small pond stood in our way, with the trail (路线) continuing on the other side. Because the pond looked shallow, we began to wade (蹚水) through, with Jessika leading the way.
About five feet from the edge, her front foot sank into the sandy bottom. Then she fell forward and both legs started to sink. I dashed to her, grabbed her under the shoulders, and pulled her out. She climbed back to shore. But now I was sinking. The mud came all the way up to my right thigh and my left calf (小腿肚). I freed my left leg but couldn’t move my right.
Jess handed me a long stick we’d picked up earlier in the hike. I put it down the side of my leg and tried to move and pull it out. Nothing. I was trapped in quicksand (流沙) .
Jessika started scooping (舀) sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. “Don’t bother,” I told her. “You’re just wasting your energy.” While I was no longer sinking, I wasn’t getting out, either.
We couldn’t call for help because the closest rescue team was back at the trailhead, five hours away from us. I told Jessika she had to hike back and call for help. She was scared-she had only ever hiked with me and was fearful of hiking alone on a trail the National Park Service calls “very tough.” But we were out of options.

Jeremy Savage aged 17, and Ian Marshall, aged 16, were close friends. They grew up together because their parents were friends, too. Every autumn, the two families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents, the two boys announced to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves next morning and promised to back before dusk.
Next morning, the boys set out with a backpack packed with food and water, the autumn breeze pinking their cheeks. Along the winding path, they glanced at a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was!
Having got enough rest, Jeremy and Ian decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three metres off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move.
“Help!” Jeremy shouted. NO REPLY. “Help! Help!” Jeremy almost cried. But still no replies. If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag, Jeremy mouthed, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Ian was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian’s face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Jeremy gave Ian his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. Jeremy used an extra shirt to keep Ian warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn’t arrive.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右:
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
In low spirits, Ian told Jeremy to leave him and go back to their parents.
