One year, when I was eight years old, I was hoping that I would 22 a bike for Christmas. I made it clear by leaving hints (提示) to my parents in every way I knew.
On Christmas morning, however, when we got to the end of the present giving, I was very 23 . My last present was not the bike I had hoped for. Without thinking carefully, I said, “Is that all?” The moment I said it I knew I had made a mistake. Those words were 24 in any situation.
My parents looked unhappy, as my disappointment was obvious. I was so upset that I didn’t 25 how unthankful I sounded. My whole family felt very uncomfortable. For a few moments there was nothing but silence in the house. I started to realize what a stupid thing I had said. After my parents worked so hard, how could I complain that I did not receive a bike when I had received so many other things?
Then my father got up and went outside the living room to the hallway. He came back with the bicycle that they had 26 to give me after all the other presents were given.
Now I felt even worse than before—I had got the bike but had shown my family what an unthankful person I actually was. How could I ever enjoy the bike after that? My parents were very wise people and they knew how to solve this. They told me to think about how I felt at the moment I received the bike. They told me to remember that feeling so that I would never repeat that 27 and feel that way again.
For years after that, at the end of all the present giving, my father would ask me what I had to say to everyone. It had become a family joke. I would always say, “Is that all?” But what I really 28 was “Thanks so much.” And everyone knew that.

However, on their birthdays, children wear colored clothes to school and give out chocolate to everyone in the class. Their best friends help them to do this. |
Japan The birthday child wears new clothes to mark the special time. Certain birthdays are more important than others. How would you feel if a stranger bought you something to eat or drink? Would you like to buy another stranger some food or drinks?
Do you know what “paying it forward” means? It’s not paying for something before you buy it. “Paying it forward” is to do something nice for another person for no reason. Then that person does something nice for someone else.
You might think that this doesn’t seem like much. But this kind act can spread (传播) really fast. In December 2015, a woman was buying a meal at McDonald’s in Florida, US. She also bought a meal for the person standing in line behind her. Well, that person did the same thing, and the next person did too. Soon, 250 people had bought meals for another person!
But you don’t need to spend money to pay it forward. There are examples of paying it forward every day like volunteering, giving food to the homeless or doing something extra nice for someone around you.
Try it out for yourself. All you have to do is look for little things you could do to make a person’s day. Then, ask them to spread the word and do three kind things for someone else. And when someone does something nice for you, don’t forget to do the same!
32. What is “paying it forward”?
A. Paying before buying. B. Paying without taking your things.
C. Asking others to pay for you. D. Doing nice things for others.
33. What happened after the woman bought food for the next person in line?
A. 250 people asked her to pay for them. B. Many other people did the same as her.
C. McDonald’s gave her a free meal. D. The last person paid for her meal.
34. The writer encourages us to ______.
A. get our money back B. spend money freely
C. do kind things for others D. save some money for ourselves

When thinking of ways to relax in life, usually things like yoga, jogging and music come to mind. These are great, to be sure. But getting a friend can also have many benefits. While human friends provide great social support, furry friends like cats and dogs can come with some great benefits.
Pets can improve people’s mood. For those who love animals, it’s actually impossible to stay in a bad mood when a pair of loving puppy eyes meets yours, or when a super-soft cat rubs up against your hand. The study found that people with AIDS were less likely to suffer from deep sadness if they owned a pet.
Pets also encourage people to get out and exercise. Whether people walk their dogs because they need it, or are more likely to enjoy a walk when they have companionship, dog owners do spend more time walking than non-pet owners.
While we all know the power of talking about your problems with a good friend who is a good listener, research shows that spending time with pets may be even better! People actually experience less stress (压力) when their pets are with them than when a supportive friend is present! A recent study performed by Washington
State University (WSU) has proved that petting cats and dogs for just ten minutes is an effective way to reduce stress levels. The team chose 249 students and put them into four groups. The first group was provided 10 minutes to play with dogs and cats.
The second group waited in line while observing the first group. The third group watched a video of the same animals, while the fourth group was just waiting. “What we wanted to learn was whether this exposure (接触)would help students reduce their stress, and it did, ”said Patricia Pendry, a professor in WSU.
It’s important to realize that owning a pet isn’t for everyone. It does come with additional work and responsibility, which can bring its own stress. However, for most people, the advantages of having a pet outweigh the drawbacks (缺点), Having a furry best friend can reduces stress in your life and bring you support when times get tough.
35. The study performed by WSU shows that ______.
A. petting animals helps reduce stress B. animals are good listeners
C. pets are friendlier than humans D. people keep pets for fun
36. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Pets can help doctors treat AIDS.
B. Dog owners are likely to exercise more.
C. Human friends are more supportive than pets.
D. Pet owners are more responsible than others.
37. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To give advice on how to keep pets. B. To draw people's attention to life stress.
C. To share ideas on how to reduce stress. D. To introduce benefits of keeping pets.
D
If you go shopping in any toy store, you can see clearly the different games and toys for boys and girls: there are a lot of pink toys on one side of the store for girls; and dark-colored cars, guns, and soldiers for boys. Some big stores with toys may even have a pink floor for girls and a blue floor for boys. In fact, it is difficult to buy a toy for a girl that is not pink.
Some people think that too much pink is bad for girls. Sue Palmer, writer of Toxic Childhood, is very worried that most girls over the age of three are captivated about the color. According to some scientists, this happens for two reasons. Firstly, most companies offer too many products in pink. Also, many parents think their little daughter looks cute in pink. Sue Palmer says that girls at this age cannot make proper decisions by themselves, but the pink can affect (影响) the choices and the decisions they will make in the future.
Some parents are worried, too, for example, Vanessa Holburn, thirty-two, who has two girls under the age of four. Their bedrooms are a sea of pink and Vanessa is not happy. “Pink says that you are soft and gentle. Blue says that you are strong and powerful. I want my daughters to be strong and powerful. I’m worried that pink will not help them with that,” she says.
But not everyone thinks there’s something wrong with pink. Grayson Turner is a father of three girls and he isn’t worried at all. “People forget that things change all the time,” he says. “My girls used to love pink when they were little, but as they get older, they change.” Turner explains that his twelve-year-old daughter never wears pink clothes anymore. “This love of pink is just a fashion and all fashions change,” he adds. “It’s only since the 1940s that people have started dressing girls--- in pink before that it was a color for boys.”
38. The underlined phrase “are captivated about” in Paragraph 2 probably means______.
A. are crazy about B. are proud of
C. are afraid of D. are nervous about
39. According to Grayson Turner, which of the following is true?
A. all little kids love the color pink
B. his girls now prefer the color blue
C. parents needn’t worry about pink toys
D. pink has always been a color for girls
40. The purpose of this passage is to______.
A. explain why girls are crazy about the color pink
B. make parents less worried about the color pink
C. encourage girls to give up playing with pink toys
D. show people’s different opinions about the color pink

330 million nature lovers from all over the world visited US national parks in 2018. This summer, visitors will have a new park to explore. Indiana Dunes National Park started on February 15, 2019. Just 50 miles from Chicago, the park is doable as a day trip or a multi-day adventure.
Indiana Dunes is located (位于) in northwestern Indiana along the shore of Lake Michigan. Indiana Dunes is the first national park in this state. The park is already Indiana’s most-visited site, with about 3.5 million visitors each year. Here’s what to know before you visit.
The park’s most impressive features (特点) are its towering sand dunes. Formed by glacial melt (冰川融化), the park’s namesake dunes can reach heights of almost 200 feet. Strong winds blowing off Michigan continually shape and change the park’s 15 miles of shoreline, ensuring a slightly different experience each time you visit.
The warm months are the best time to take full advantage of the park’s beach. But the park is worth visiting in any season. You can do different activities in different seasons. To see beautiful fall leaves, plan your visit in autumn. Or explore the park in winter and enjoy far fewer crowds. If you visit in spring, just enjoy your walk for beautiful flowers.
A 3.5-mile path showing the best the park has to offer. The most famous dune is Mount Baldy, and on certain days you can actually climb to the top of this sand dune to enjoy open views of the surrounding landscape (风景). Other outdoor activities at Indiana Dunes National Park include biking, boating, and fishing. Of course, swimming in Lake Michigan is one of the most beloved activities, but it’s important to be mindful of changing water conditions. Like an ocean, Lake Michigan can be calm one minute and dangerous the next.
The park’s Dunewood Campground has 66 campsites and is equipped with restrooms and showers. It is first-come, first-served, and the fee is $25 per night. If you don’t want to camp, several other accommodations (住宿) around Indiana Dunes don’t require sleeping in a tent. Everything from bed and breakfasts to hotels is available.
If you’re flying to the Midwest, the airport nearest to Indiana Dunes is South Bend International. From Indianapolis, the drive is about 2.5 hours. The park’s main gate is just off I-94 and is easily accessed from the Indiana Toll Road. Take the exit for IN-49 and you will pass right by the visitor center where you can park, head in to get a map, and plan the day. The park fee is just $6 per car and $80 for a season pass.
41. When did Indiana Dunes National Park start?
42. Where is the park located?
