    Unit 9   A Volunteer.

     

    1. Analysis of the students

    The students in our school are from rural areas, and their English learning foundation is weak. Since they have learned English for a year and a half, they have a general comprehension of the language. Though their pronunciation is not very good and vocabulary may not be rich, they are eager to speak out in English.

    1. Analysis of the teaching material 

    The topic of the unit 9 is volunteering. In this unit, the teaching should help students understand the importance of helping others and make students have a preliminary understanding of attributive clauses.

    III. Teaching Aims

    1. Knowledge objectives

     1) To learn the words and phrasal verbs: volunteer, village, nun, move, soldier, Calcutta, nursing home, Mother Teresa, Nobel Peace Prize, Audrey Hepburn, Roman Holiday, Hong Kong.

    2) To learn the key expressions:

    Wasnt she the actress who starred in the movie Roman Holiday ?

    You seem to know a lot about her.

    1. Ability objectives

    1)  To train students to master new words and expressions.

    2)  To make students comprehend the conversation about volunteering.

    3)  To train students ability to use what they learned to communicate freely about  

    volunteer work.

    1. Moral objectives

    1)  To enhance their cooperative and communicative ability through group work.

    2)  To arouse students awareness to contribute their power to help others. No matter  

    how little the power is, everyone can make a difference!

    IV. Teaching main points and difficulties

    1. Teaching main points:

    Use the new words and the key expressions to practice listening and speaking skills.

    1. Teaching difficulties

    To master and use the key expressions freely in real life.

    V. Teaching methods and learning methods

    1. Teaching methods:

    1)  Task-based teaching method 

    2)  Situational teaching method

    3) Group-work teaching method

    2. Learning methods:

    1) Inquiry learning method

    2) Cooperative learning method

    VI. Teaching Procedures

    Step1 Lead-in

    Show students some photos and videos about a Wenchuan boy who I helped 10 years ago. In order to tell students that so many people tried their best to help others in this disaster.

    Step2 General Idea of Volunteer

    1. Show students some examples of famous people who spent their lives helping others. To elicit students background knowledge about volunteer work.
    2. Q: What do we call a person who helps others?

     Step 3 Ask & Free talk

    1. Show students a video about a foreign volunteer work.
    2. After watching video, students can ask some questions to talk about the video.
    3. Have students brainstorm some different volunteer work in China.

    Step 4 Presentation.

    1. Teacher shows some pictures of volunteers helping others.  
    2. Students look at the pictures and learn the target language.

     Step 5 Game

    1. Let students play a game between boys and girls to consolidate the target language.
    2. To have a brief summary of the volunteer work we have learned in this lesson.

    Step6 Listening practice

    1. Pre-listening

      Zhang Wei and Tim are talking about a book of Mother Teresa. Let students speak out what theyve known about Mother Teresa to predict the background information of listening.

    1. While listening

    1)  Listen to the dialogue and fill in the blanks.

    2)  Listen again and check true or false.

    1. Post-listening

      Have students read the dialogue after the tape and focus on the key expressions.

    Step 7 Speaking

    1. We know Zhang Wei and Tim are watching a movie about Audrey Hepburn. Have    students say something about her after watching the video.
    2. Let students practice reading the dialog with their partners.
    3. Have several pairs to show the dialog correctly, loudly and emotionally.
    4. Let students use these pictures of several famous volunteers to make their own dialogues in pairs with the key expressions.
    5. Have some pairs to show their conversations in class.

    Step8 Group work

    1. Get the students to work in groups to make a plan about volunteer. Because Zhang Wei and Tim want to call more people to help others.
    2. Give students some advice and example about how to make a volunteers recruitment.
    3. Encourage students to complete this task through cooperation.
    4. Have some groups to make a report about their volunteers recruitment.

    Step 9 Summary

    Emphasize the importance of helping others. No matter how little the power is, everyone can make a difference! Beacause The rose's in her hand; the flavor in mine.

    Step10 Homework

    1. Review the lesson.
    2. Try your best to help others now.
