Nehal is a student with a physical disability. In his free time, Nehal loves playing outdoors with his neighbourhood friends. He also attends Chol, one of the few mainstream schools in Suva, Fiji, which offers suitable learning for children with disabilities. The school has adapted some of its facilities since Nehal joined to create an accessible and more inclusive learning environment for students with disabilities.
This began with placing his classroom closer to the bathroom so that Nehal could more readily access the facility. As he and his classmates progress in their academic studies each year, their classroom doesn’t move like other classrooms to ensure Nehal consistently has a comfortable access to the facility every year.
Within the classroom, students typically sit on desks with benches. To adapt to Nehal’s physical impairment (障碍), he has a special and lower desk positioned against a wall that he can lean (倚靠) on for additional back support.
His teachers work closely with him on his literacy and numeracy (算术) skills while he has continued to stand out in languages—Hindi, English and Fijian.
Being in an inclusive learning environment is important to Nehal’s development. The support of his classmates both in and outside of the classroom has also been key to Nehal’s learning experience. From being a shoulder to lean on as he walks around the school to making sure he joins in class projects, his classmates are always on hand to ensure Nehal is included in the day-to-day activities at school.
At the end of the school day, Nehal is picked up by his mother and his sister. Once home, they are joined by Nitin, Nehal’s father. “He is like a gift God gives us,” his father speaks of Nehal.
4. What’s Nehal’s classroom in Chol like?
A. It has a bathroom. B. It moves every year.
C. It is on the top floor. D. It remains in one place.
5. Why does the school arrange a special desk for Nehal?
A. To take care of his physical condition. B. To let him listen to the teachers carefully.
C. To prevent him talking with other students. D. To help him go out of the classroom more easily.
6. How do Nehal’s classmates treat him?
A. They ignore him. B. They talk behind his back.
C. They offer him much help. D. They challenge him constantly.
7. Which word can best describe Nehal?
A. Ambitious. B. Lucky. C. Selfish. D. Lazy.

【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“To adapt to Nehal’s physical impairment (障碍), he has a special and lower desk positioned against a wall that he can lean (倚靠) on for additional back support.(为了适应尼哈尔的身体缺陷,他在靠墙的地方放了一张特殊的、较低的桌子,他可以靠在上面,以获得额外的背部支撑)”可知,学校为Nehal安排特殊的桌子是为了照顾他的身体情况。故选A。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“From being a shoulder to lean on as he walks around the school to making sure he joins in class projects, his classmates are always on hand to ensure Nehal is included in the day-to-day activities at school.(从在学校走路时可以依靠的肩膀,到确保他参加课堂项目,他的同学们总是在身边,以确保尼哈尔参与学校的日常活动)”可推断,Nehal的同学们对他的帮助很大。故选C。
【7题详解】

Ever since I can remember, I have always enjoyed making myself and others laugh. Humor has always played an important role in my life as it was key in helping me develop my personality and outlook on life through childhood.
What I did not realize, however, was why or how it made me feel better about myself. I wanted to find out just exactly how humor affects us in our lives, and whether or not it played a key role in having a longer and more enjoyable life.
From my research, I found many different ways that humor can influence our emotions and physical health. These benefits are split into two different sections: short-term and long-term.
One example of the short-term benefits of humor would be that laughter induces relaxation. It gets many muscles moving in your body. One reason why muscles get tense is lack of oxygen flow. Once you laugh as a response to humor, it increases the flow of oxygen to the muscles, resulting in a more relaxed and more energy-filled body. Another short-term benefit is that laughter causes pain relief. This is achieved by intense stimulation of organs in the body, which leads to increased circulation and blood flow.
As for the long-term effects, they can be just as rewarding. For example, one thing laughter can do in the long run is improve the overall health of the heart. This happens because, like stated earlier, laughter increases blood flow. Since the heart is the organ that regulates all blood flow in the body, naturally the heart becomes strengthened. One last long-term benefit from humor is that it can reduce stress levels and boost the immune system.
8. What benefit of humor does the author mention in the first paragraph?
A. It lets the author make more friends.
B. It keeps the author physically healthy.
C. It helps to shape the author’s character.
D. It frees the author from any stress.
9 What does the underlined word “induces” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Skips. B. Decreases. C. Needs. D. Causes.
10. How does the author show the long-term benefits of humor?
A. By telling stories. B. By giving examples.
C. By listing numbers. D. By making comparisons.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Health Benefits of Humor
B. Stories About Laughter
C. Success Brought by Humor
D. Humor in Daily Life
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了幽默给健康带来的短期和长期的益处。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Humor has always played an important role in my life as it was key in helping me develop my personality and outlook on life through childhood.(幽默在我的生活中一直扮演着重要的角色,因为它是帮助我在童年时期发展个性和人生观的关键。)”可知,幽默有助于作者塑造自己的性格。故选C项。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段中“One example of the short-term benefits of humor would be that laughter induces relaxation. It gets many muscles moving in your body. One reason why muscles get tense is lack of oxygen flow. Once you laugh as a response to humor, it increases the flow of oxygen to the muscles, resulting in a more relaxed and more energy-filled body.(幽默的短期好处的一个例子是笑能……放松。它使你身体的许多肌肉运动起来。肌肉紧张的一个原因是缺氧。一旦你因为幽默而笑,它会增加肌肉的氧气流量,从而使身体更放松,更充满能量。)”可知,笑可以解决肌肉缺氧的问题,让身体放松。由此推知,induces意为“引起”,与cause意思一致。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“For example, one thing laughter can do in the long run is improve the overall health of the heart.(例如,从长远来看,笑能做的一件事是改善心脏的整体健康。)”
故选A项。
D
When fireworks are lit in celebration of the New Year, wild birds often experience lasting harmful effects. An international team of researchers tracked Arctic migratory(迁移的) geese as they traveled in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands over eight New Year periods to study the impacts of fireworks. Data from 347 geese showed that birds suddenly leave where they are sleeping on New Year’s Eve and fly farther away from where people are.
Geese’ lives were disturbed by the noise and flashes and these geese ended up resting two hours less and sometimes flying nonstop as far as 310 miles compared to the nights when there were no fireworks.
Geese spend their winter in Western Europe to escape extreme Arctic winters in their breeding grounds. Still, winters here are maybe not severely cold, but rather dark. As predators(食肉动物) are around in the dark, geese can only search for food in the light hours. During the night, they usually settle on small lakes to save energy and rest in relative safety. During New Year’s Eve, geese are heavily scared, as the fireworks sounds and flashing lights are unexpected to them and they view them as a threat to their life.
But their changed behavior didn’t end with the fireworks. The geese didn’t return to their original sleeping locations and spent more time searching for food to store energy for days after the celebrations ended.
The researchers hope that the findings will be used to improve fireworks management. They want to provide decision makers with real numbers to support their discussions. As already stated above, they suggest that some measures should be taken for geese to escape fireworks’ disturbance during New Year’s Eve—nationwide regulations regarding nature reserve areas and some centralization of fireworks displays, as well as lighting public fireworks in urban areas away from where the geese live.
12. What may the author think of the situation of geese during the New Year?
A. Worrying. B. Promising.
C. Touching. D. Amusing.
13. What can we know about geese from paragraph 3?
A. They enjoy flying in the dark.
B. They spend the winter in the Arctic.
C. They are terrified of fireworks.
D. They usually search for food at night.
14. What is the researchers’ advice on protecting geese?
A. Setting up goose parks in the city.
B. Banning fireworks during New Year’s Eve.
C. Persuading people into buying silent fireworks.
D. Setting off fireworks far from geese’ habitats.
15. In which section can this text be found in a newspaper?
A. Travel. B. Nature. C. Culture. D. Education.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. B

The dramatic incident occurred during an afternoon hike. Four friends and teammates from Northwest College in Cody , Wyoming, had been hiking in the Montana national forest. As they hiked, a bear suddenly attacked the closest hiker Brady Lowry. “It shook me around and I didn't know what to do,” Brady recalled the terrifying attack. The bear shook him by the arm and then threw him away.
Brady's friend, Kendall Cummings, reacted quickly to try to scare the bear away. He yelled and kicked at the bear and pulled on the bear's fur. “I didn't want to lose my friend,” said Kendall.“I could have run and potentially lost a friend but I didn't do that. I thought I would get him off and save him.”
The bear turned its attention to Kendall and knocked him to the ground. In protecting his friend, Kendall became the target of the bear's forceful attack. Eventually, the other teammates scared the bear enough so that it soon withdrew and ran off.
After the attack, Kendall was badly injured, but he managed to pull himself up. The teammates then helped Kendall off the mountain by supporting his weight and carrying him part of the way. Once the boys reached a location with cell service, they dialed 911 for help.
After half an hour, some rescuers arrived at the scene. They examined Kendall and Brady and they were sent to Billings Clinic Hospital in a rush for their injuries. Brady broke his arm and suffered serious wounds in the initial attack. Kendall underwent surgery for more serious injuries on his face and arm. Both boys were on the road to recovery.
