From chicken feet socks to green fish head masks, from sad frog toys to dinosaur costumes, “ugly” products have become popular among young people.
On the social media platform Douban, there is a group called Protection of Ugly Things with more than 200, 000 members. They post “ugly things” they see and buy in daily life. Many of the comments below the posts are “cute” and “the more I look at it, the more I love it”.
Some museums have also followed the trend and produced many “ugly” but impressive cultural and creative products. For example, on June 14, the Gansu Provincial Museum brought out a stuffed toy. It's based on its famous bronze sculpture, known as Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow.
The toy recreates the details of the sculpture in a cute and cartoon style. The horse puts on a crooked smile, standing on a chubby green bird. This makes the toy “more fashionable and more fun", so it can connect with ordinary people, the museum said.
In fact, some of the “ugly” products can also be useful. Yin Peixin, 11, from Hubei, has a cabbage dog toy. Unlike others, she doesn't find it ugly. “It's a creative design to mix cabbage with a dog. The toy makes me feel better when I'm upset. It also serves as a mini pillow to help me have a good sleep, ” said Yin.
According to Zhang Lei, a professor at Zhejiang University of Technology, the rise in the popularity of ugly things means that young people want to show that they're different. D. “Perfect” items might raise people’s hatred, while “ugly things” not.

Mont Kilimaniaro is among Africa’s most breathtaking sites, but hard times have come to the plains below. Death is all around and it's tragic to behold. The cause is a lack of rainfall in a land where on the contrary there is still plenty of water. Underground springs fed by snowmelt from the mountain, still create swamps(沼泽). The problem is that the absence of rain means grasses and other essential plants are not growing, and the animals that depend on them are dying from a lack of nutrition.
The elephant herds here are among the most successful in the continent. They're closely monitored and conservationists have given them names. But even these great beasts are dying too, what is for the smaller ones?
A drought induced hunger. Since the start of June almost 60 elephant deaths have been recorded. More than half calves were killed by starvation due to their mothers’ failure to produce milk. Tolstoy, a male, was named after Russian. He was 5-year-old at the time of his death. And he was one of the greatest tuskers like one of the greatest alive.
Very sad story. There are some of the last relatively undisturbed elephants in Africa. While poaching(偷猎)has been destructive elsewhere, these animals have been largely spared. Right now, however, the problem they face here is a drier climate which poses the greatest threat to their survival.
There are plenty of people here who care deeply about these elephants, but the sad truth is that conservationists are powerless to stop the dying. Only fresh rainfall and new plant growth can do that. We are waiting for the rains. If the rains don't come before the end of the year, the death rate will only increase.
28. What do we know about Mont Kilimaniaro from the passage?
A. Mount Kilimaniaro is the most exciting site in Africa.
B. Due to a lack of rainfall, grasses can't grow well there.
C. All the animals there are dying from a lack of nutrition.
D. There is little water on the plains of Mont Kilimaniaro.
29. What does the underlined word “induced” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Caused. B. Distinguished. C. Guaranteed. D. Determined.
30. What can be inferred from the sad story of Tolstoy?
A. Elephants all died from poaching.
B. Tolstoy was named after Russian.
C. Animals suffered a lot from hunger.
D. Tolstoy was one of the greatest tuskers alive.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Poaching: A Danger to Animals
B. Elephants: Great Beasts Facing Death
C. Mont Kilimaniaro: A Death Place for Animals
D. Dry Climate: A Great Threat to Plants and Animals

We all know how it is: You finish a long day at work, head home, relax for a few moments, and then haul yourself back up to start dinner. For most of us that will up the time around 7 p. m. at the absolute earliest, but according to a new study, that is simply too late in the day if you are looking to lose weight.
This Harvard University study actually suggests a time when most of us are still at work, making it almost harder to achieve for the average British. Still, the findings of the study are interesting, as it offers some insight into how the dieting process works in relation to our metabolism(新陈代谢).
Here is everything you need to know about the new dinner time study.
The Harvard study found 5 p. m. to be the most suitable time for dinner because of the way the body's metabolism functions for the average person. One of the main reasons is that eating dinner earlier will stop you from getting hungry throughout the day and turning to snacking. The study also found that people who ate food later in the day burned their calories more slowly as their metabolism is slower during later hours. This would mean the weight gained would take longer to shift, helping promote fat growth as a result.
As this study is new, it is once again breaking new ground in the ever-evolving ever-changing conversation surrounding food and weight.
One such person is a functional nutritionist and CEO of Flo Living Alisa Vitti, who explained that the later you eat, the harder it is for your food to digest.
“Any time between 6-8 p. m. is an ideal dinnertime, ” another person Tracy said, adding "That's because it gives the average person enough time to digest before hitting the hay around 10 or 11p. m. ”
Naturally, it ultimately comes down to the individual depending on whether or not you are up early or riselater in the day.
32. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To tell a truth. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To provide an example. D. To describe a phenomenon.
33. What did the Harvard study find?
A. Everyone must have their dinner at 5 p. m.
B. Eating dinner earlier will make people have snacks.
C. The later people eat food, the less weight they will get.
D. People burn their calories faster when eating dinner earlier.
34. What is Alisa Vitti's attitude towards the study?
A. Disapproving. B. Objective.
C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The best time to go to bed.
B. Different ways to lose weight.
C. Different opinions about having dinner.
D. A new study about the best time to have dinner.

How many times have you forgotten to do something important because you didn't write it down or set a reminder? Or, how often do you feel overloaded because you said “yes” to too many people and over committed yourself?
Many of us can relate to these situations because they are common time management mistakes we should avoid. 36 They can also cause you to miss out on your goals. This is why it's important to identify the time management mistakes you're making and learn strategies to overcome each one.
One common mistake is not to use To-Do lists effectively. When you don't write things down, it's easy to forget what you need to do and to let people down as a result. It's also important to remember To-Do lists can get overwhelmed when we take on too many projects. 37
Another common mistake is having no priorities. 38 Getting your priorities right will also help you reduce the stress you feel when you have a lot of work on.
Not knowing how to manage distractions is another major time management mistake. 39 So, make sure you know how to manage interruptions. Turn off your phone and email alerts when you need to concentrate.
40 Chances are you want to help your friends and colleagues whenever you can. But when you over-extend yourself, you don't have the time or energy to do your best work. Some people think multitasking is actually a good strategy to maximize time. The truth is you're likely to do both tasks poorly because you simply can't concentrate fully when you're doing two things at once.
These are just some of the time management mistakes.
A. This can cost you hours of wasted time each day.
B. In addition, you should also avoid multitasksing.
C. These mistakes may also impact the quality of your work.
D. Mistakes like these can cause stress and lower your productivity.
E. If this happens to you, consider using an Action Program instead.
F. Another common mistake is saying “yes” to too many tasks and commitments.
G. When you don't prioritize tasks, you can end up spending much time on less important things.

“My favorite superhero, ” Sebastian started reading in front of his whole class, then he stopped. He was nervous about reading his essay, but his teacher, Mrs. Evans, said she was so impressed by his words that she wanted everyone in class to hear it.
“Go on, Sebastian, ” the teacher encouraged.
“My mom is my favorite superhero, ” he continued. “Some might laugh at me for saying something like that, but my mom is the most hard-working person in the world. She raised me and my two brothers alone, and we have never lacked anything. She also shows us how much she loves us, which I love about her. Our family is the most important to her, and she made us a special promise. ”
“What's the promise?” a boy in class interrupted.
Sebastian smiled and wet his lips before he continued reading. “My mom promised to get us a house by the end of the year. We live in a trailer, and it's a little small with three boys. I don't know if my mom can keep her promise because she had an accident recently, so I'm helping out too. ”
“How are you helping?” a teen girl asked.
“Hush, everyone. Let Sebastian finish reading, "Mrs. Evans gently scolded the class.
“My mom is a street sweeper for the city, but she's been staying home, trying to get better. She's on paid sick leave, but I still wanted to help. Someone has to do her job. So I went to her boss and started doing her job. I sweep away the leaves outside mostly because they're falling so often now. But I realized how hard it was and that a real superhero doesn't wear a cape or go on adventures. A real hero takes care of their family, and I hope to grow up and be half the hero my mom is. Thank you. ”
“That was fantastic, Sebastian. Really. Your mom should be proud. ”
The rest of the class read their essays too, and Sebastian started to feel a bit silly because they all talked about superheroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Wonder Woman. He was the only one who had written about a real person.

参考范文:
Dear Mr. Liu:
I’m Li Hua. Learning that our school is selecting the “Reading Star” of the month, I’m writing to apply for the position.
Possessing great interest in reading, I devote a lot of time to reading as well as encouraging others to join. What’s more, activities, such as book sharing and exchanging, are organized under my direction, which provide students with an awesome feast in the ocean of books, thus arousing our interest in reading.
To sum up, I think I’m qualified to be a Reading Star. If I have the great honor to be chosen, I would definitely go to great length to help promote reading among us students.
第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
He asked Mrs. Evans about it at the end of their class, feeling somewhat embarrassed.
“That’s exactly why your classmates and I were impressed, Sebastian. Not many kids understand a mother’s
sheer bravery and dedication to her kids. As far as I’m concerned, you were the only one who understood the
assignment, ” she assured him, and Sebastian left school that day feeling rather proud of himself. He couldn’t
wait to show his mom. A few days later, Sebastian was filling in for his mother again, and he was tasked to
clean his own street.
In the midst of his sweeping, “Sebastian!” he heard Mrs. Evans’ voice. Sebastian’s eyebrows raised in shock
at seeing his teacher. Maybe she came to talk to his mom, he thought. But then he saw his classmates getting
out of the other cars and some of their moms were there too. But the biggest surprise of all came when they
opened the trunks and produced rakes, brooms, and trash bags. “Sebastian! We’re here to help!” a classmate,
Linda, excitedly told him, smiling and holding a broom in her hand. That day, they ended up having such a
special and significant time together.
