Top Exhibitions to See in London in 2023
    Architectural: Vanishing Points
While we like to think of architecture existing purely in the real world, emerging designers and architects are using platforms like Instagram to create structures in the virtual world. This collection of works, which range from the practical to the fantastical, are all by architects who have gathered significant social media followings.
In the Digital Universe at ROCA London. 8 February—31 July, free.
    Flowery: Orchids
This annual festival is back in bloom (开花), this time inspired by the beauty and biodiversity of Cameroon. Just like previous years, the orchids are spread throughout the various zones of the Princess of Wales conservatory and accompanied by sculptures that are just as colourful as the flowers on display.
At Kew Gardens. 4 February —5 March, &16.50—entrance to the gardens included.
    Female Abstraction: Action, Gesture, Paint

Well, now’s the time to let the most important women of the movement take the limelight in an exhibition that includes works by American artists such as Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler, but spreads the net wider to include the female abstract artists from Europe, Asia and the wider world, with whom most of us will be unfamiliar.
    At Whitechapel Gallery. 9 February—7 May, £ 16.50—concessions available.
    Powerful Portraits (肖像): Alice Neel
The largest UK exhibition to date of American painter Alice Neel’s work will bring together her figurative pieces from across her 60-year career. Neel went against the popular grain by painting figures when abstract works were most popular, and she painted subjects that other artists ignored — pregnant women, labour leaders, black children, civil rights activists and strange performers. It’s high time we had a major show of her work in London, and the Barbican has duly provided.

When Roosevelt was a kid, his doctors claimed that he was too weak to live a normal life like most children of his age. They strongly recommended him to avoid participation in any physical activities, fearing that it could worsen his health condition and potentially lead to his death. Their opinions implied that he would face up to a life full of all kinds of limitations. Instead of permitting their limiting beliefs about what he could do and achieve, he chose to live a meaningful life.
Despite his doctors’ strong suggestions that he remain inactive, he didn’t want to be a carefree observer of the world as it passed him by. He was determined to force himself to be active. Roosevelt had daily adventures in the woods as a boy.
He continued to play sports when he got to college. In fact, he didn’t just play, but he excelled in both boxing and rowing, both of which require astonishing levels of strength and endurance. When Roosevelt graduated from college, his doctors were still not completely sure about his health condition. They still believed that he would be putting himself in serious danger, because his heart problems had not improved. They firmly believed that it would be best to find a desk job for him after completing a college degree. Once again, Roosevelt decided to challenge himself to his physical limits by living an extremely energetic adult life. In about every field he took part, he would aim to push his physical limits. Impressively, he was excellent as an explorer, a hunter, an author, a soldier and a politician.
Eventually, Roosevelt went beyond the mistaken limitation upon him and lived an amazing life.
24.What would happen if Roosevelt followed his doctors’ suggestions?
A.He would live a meaningful life.
B.His life would be full of limitations.
C.His parents would feel satisfied with him.
D.He would become an extraordinary person.25.What did his doctors expect Roosevelt to become after college graduation?
    A.An explorer. B.A boxing player.
C.An office clerk. D.A politician.26.How is the text mainly developed?
A.By following time order. B.By listing obvious reasons.
C.By giving some examples. D.By making necessary comparisons.27.Which of the following can best describe Roosevelt?
    A.Humorous. B.Generous. C.Considerate. D.Ambitious.

Look up how to increase your life expectancy (预期寿命), and you will probably see plenty of results recommending that you have a healthy diet, get sufficient sleep, work out and cut out tobacco and too much alcohol consumption. But what many of us don’t know is that our relationships also affect our life expectancy. Social integration is associated with greater life satisfaction, better health and increased life expectancy. People with wide social networks are more likely to be happy, experience fewer health issues, enjoy better mental health and to live a lot longer.
Now this doesn’t mean that we should dive head first into a relationship whenever we’re lonely in order to avoid dying young. Harmful relationships can be as isolating as being alone, so who we choose to break bread with is absolutely vital to our overall health.
Have you ever wondered why some people are single and happy, while others are drowning in suffering? Or why some married couples exist in a consistent state of bliss, while others are practically enemies?
Research shows that marriage has greater benefits for men than it does for women. Being coupled allows men to receive the essential emotional support that they would lack if they were single. They also get the added benefit of being physically taken care of thanks to the gender roles society still subscribes to.
Women, on the other hand, don’t have as much luck when it comes to being coupled. A woman in a harmful relationship is likely to experience the mental, emotional and physical consequences that come with that. On the contrary, a woman in a healthy relationship is likely to live well. Research shows that the women who are happily married tend to be coupled with partners who take on their fair share of household responsibilities.
But that’s not all, age gaps also need to be factored in to determine relationship satisfaction. Couples with wider age gaps are more likely to be harmonious compared to their peers.
28.What does the writer intend to emphasize in Paragraph 1?
    A.Some health problems.
    B.Ways to increase life expectancy.
C.The effect of sleep on people’s health.
D.The importance of human relationships.29.What does the underlined word “bliss” mean in Paragraph 3?
    A.Happiness. B.Kindness.
C.Loneliness. D.Friendliness.30.What can we learn from the research?
A.Marriage benefits men and women equally.
B.Women benefit more from marriage than men.
C.Men are better taken care of because of the gender roles.
D.Good relationship can effectively prevent people from dying lonely.31.What would be probably discussed in the next paragraph of this passage?
A.The influence of a harmonious marriage.
    B.Relationship satisfaction for older couples.
    C.Gender differences in marriage satisfaction.
D.The benefits of wider age gaps in marriage.

Reading is a complex and crucial skill that impacts the youth’s ability to perform as students. Therefore, it’s important to develop reading skills during childhood. A team of researchers focused on the effect of whole-body learning in instruction, known as embodied learning.
The research included 149 children, aged 5 to 6, who had just started school. They were divided into three groups: one that stood up and used their whole bodies to shape letter sounds; a seated group that shaped letter sounds with their hands and arms;and a control group that received traditional, seated instruction during which they wrote letters by hand.
“Our research showed that children who used their whole bodies to shape the sounds of letters became twice as proficient(熟练的)at letter sounds that are more difficult to learn as those who received traditional instruction,” says PhD student Linn Damsgaard of UCPH’s Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports.
With regard to difficult letter sounds, she adds, “There are many difficult letter sounds in Danish. These sounds are particularly important because once children become proficient at them, they will be better readers.”
Associate professor Jacob Wienecke, who led the study, explains, “The primary goal is to learn more about which methods can be used to give beginner readers a good start. The idea is that if, through play and movement, we can learn where their strengths truly lie, we’ll create a form of learning that combines reading with play, and that’s truly positive.”
Previously, the researchers showed that the children felt more motivated by teaching methods which included physical movement. Jacob Wienecke hopes this will provide an opportunity to inspire teachers and school managers to prioritize movement across subjects.
The study also investigated whether a direct effect of embodied learning could be found on children’s reading of individual words. This was not possible, which might be due to the fact that the children were at such an early stage of their literacy development that they could not yet use their knowledge of letter sounds to read words.
32.What were the participants required to do in the study?
A.To pick out difficult letter sounds in Danish.
B.To learn new letters through repeated writing.
C.To learn letter sounds using different approaches.
D.To memorize some letter sounds as soon as possible.33.How can embodied learning get children actively involved?
    A.By combining learning with games.
B.By offering them chances to cooperate.
C.By inspiring them to overcome difficulties.
D.By explaining instructions to them patiently.34.What does Jacob expect of the research finding?
    A.Promoting harmonious teacher-student relationships.
B.Urging schools to pay attention to physical exercise.
C.Enabling researchers to carry out further studies.
D.Encouraging educators to apply it to teaching.35.What could be the best title for the text?
    A.Whole-body learning—a good start to children’s reading
    B.Embodied learning—a booster for children’s reading speed
C.Children’s reading skills matter a lot in their literacy development
D.Children’s literacy development depends on the flexibility of their bodies

    五、七选五
A major benefit of growing your own tomatoes is variety. If you visit a garden center, you will find seeds and small starter plants for yellow tomatoes, purple tomatoes, huge tomatoes, and even very small tomatoes.
36 . The most important things are to give the plants plenty of water, well- draining soil, heat and light. It is best to grow tomatoes in a place that receives at least six hours of sunlight each day. Removing weeds will keep pests and diseases away while giving the plants enough nutrients to produce fruit.
Tomatoes grow best in soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.8. If the pH reading is lower than 6.0, you can add about 2 cups of dolomitic lime (石灰) into the soil for each plant.
If you want to grow really big tomatoes, try following these seven tips from expert growers: Select tomato seeds with names like Big Zac or Bull’s Heart. 37 .
Start seeds early indoors and re-plant them into larger containers several times before moving them outdoors. 38 , removing leaves from the bottom one- third of plants and burying stems up to the next set of leaves. This will produce stronger plants.
Remove new flowers that develop at the top of the plant when older fruits near the bottom begin to grow. 39 . Pay close attention! Observe the plants daily for posts and diseases. React quickly to prevent problems.
Remove the small growths where the plant’s stems and branches meet. This will prevent them from taking away nutrients and shading developing fruit under them.
40 instead of letting them develop into a shorter, wider shrub (灌木).
    Finally, water, fertilize and weed!
    A.Plant them deep each time
    B.Rich soil benefits the growth
C.Tomatoes are not difficult to grow
D.Skills are demanding in growing tomatoes
E.Cut back the plants to keep only one main branch
F.They are all genetically designed to produce large fruit
G.This will force the plant to produce fewer but larger tomatoes

It was four weeks before New Year, and our youth group wanted to do something together as a New Year project for our community. The concept was great, but none of us seventeen-year-olds had any idea what to do.
“Maybe we could have a food drive to help the homeless,” John suggested at our Sunday night meeting. “But we have done that many times”, answered Brian with a frown.
Ten minutes passed without any proposal good enough to win our hearts. Finally I decided to speak. “Why don’t we think about our project for a few days and then come back with three or four suggestions we can vote on?” Everyone agreed to wait a week before deciding.
I knew time was running out to get something going before New Year, but I had no clue what we should do. During the following week, one idea after another ran through my mind, but I was still indecisive.
Thursday after school, I wandered into the kitchen as my dad prepared for dinner. Sensing my uneasiness, he asked what troubled me without even looking up. “Well... it...” I let out a long breath. “Our youth group wants to do something for New Year, but we don’t know what to do...”
“Hmm.” My dad thought out loud. “There’s a seniors’ home I’ve worked with close to St. Joseph’s Hospital. The residents don’t get out much around New Year with the snow and ice. It might be an idea to take them out to see the New Year lights around here.”
I stood still for a few moments thinking of all the spectacular(绚丽的)New Year light displays in our neighborhood. To be honest, I never thought about that, but it might just work.

The robot has nine cameras and GPS, There’s an operator who can actually talk to the people around the robot. I just can’t wait to make an order and want more contact with the robot than the package itself. It might be dead true that delivery guys have to start thinking about finding a new job very soon.

Next Sunday evening, our youth group met. My fellows put forward several suggestions and I also contributed Dad’s idea for discussion. To my pleasant surprise, the New Year lights tour won their hearts. We called the seniors’ home and they were thrilled about our proposal. The following weeks, we were busy lining up everything for the tour, including the bus to drive the seniors along the planned route.
On New Year’s Day, the bus we rented arrived at the seniors’ home in the snow. Despite the cold, the snow added a magical white blanket to the neighborhood. All residents slowly found seats on the bus and the tour began. The spectacular light displays lit up their faces and I even saw some eyes filling up. Returning to the seniors’ home, they couldn’t stop talking about all they’d seen and thanked us again and again. Looking at their excited and grateful faces, we’d never felt warmer.
