Lsing an eye might be an unthinkable thing, especially fr a yung wman, but nt fr Xintng. She chse t becme an cularist (义眼师) wh makes prsthetic eyes (义眼) fr herself and peple in the same situatin t help them get back their cnfidence. Xintng is the name that she gave t herself – which she prefers peple t call her instead f her real name – because “xintng” in Chinese sunds like “new pupils”.
Nearly 10 years after lsing her right eye in a car accident, 28-year-ld Xintng frm Beijing transfrmed the hllw f her eye scket – a “flaw” she used t hide – int a fashin statement. She shared a shrt vide nline in which she wears a glwing prsthetic eye. As she waves her hand, the prsthetic eye begins t shine with red light. With anther wave, the light changes t green and then purple and white.
The vide sn went viral n scial media, with many cmments praising her fr being “creative”, “beautiful” and “ptimistic”. But that wasn’t the case 10 years ag.
“The prsthetic eye I wre at that time was trturing me,” Xintng said. “It hurt and gave me a red and swllen eye scket, and it lked s dull and fake. I was yung and I wanted t lk attractive.”
She tk matters int her wn hands and began researching prsthetic eyes. Beginning in 2019, she dedicated abut tw years t mastering the prductin techniques and skills under the guidance f an cularist. This jurney led her t establish her wn prsthetic eye studi, prviding persnalized services fr thse requiring them.
She prduces prsthetic eyes as if she is creating pieces f artwrk. “The psitin, directin, and even strke thickness f the bld streaks n the prsthetic eyeballs matter,” the cularist said. Smetimes she als paints special patterns accrding t custmers’ needs: twinkling stars, cartn characters like Cardcaptr Sakura and effects like clred cntact lenses.
Nw when Xintng hears her custmers say wrds such as “Finally, I can accept myself” r “Nw I feel free t take selfies”, she feels deeply mved.

Peple’s likelihd f being vegetarian seems t be influenced by several genetic variants, and tw f the three mst imprtant genes fund s far appear t be invlved in fat metablism (新陈代谢).
Genetic factrs are knwn t influence aspects f diet, such as whether peple like cffee r alchl. T see if genes als affect vegetarianism, Nabeel Yaseen at Nrthwestern University in Chicag and his team turned t data n abut 5300 strict vegetarians and 330,000 meat eaters. They fund that three gene variants were mre cmmn in vegetarians. Tw, called NPC1 and RMC1, are invlved in the transprt and metablism f chlesterl and ther fatty mlecules. The third gene, called RIOK3, has varius functins, including affecting the immune system.
It isn’t knwn hw these genes may relate t vegetarianism. But ne f the chief differences between animal-based fds and plant-based nes is the chemical make-up f their fats r ils, cllectively knwn as lipids (油脂). Yaseen cnclude that sme peple may functin better n a vegetarian diet because they are mre able t synthesize (合成) certain lipid mlecules that are present in meat.
Sme peple wh try vegetarianism but give up may be ding s because their bdy becmes deficient in the essential lipids, says Yaseen. “They decide that this diet is nt fr them r gradually g back int an mnivre (杂食) diet. Sme peple might think they just dn’t have the willpwer.”
Anther pssibility is that the apparently vegetarianism-prmting gene variants affect peple’s taste. “Alt f infrmatin abut genes is yet t be knwn” Yaseen says.
Richard McIlwain at the UK Vegetarian Sciety says the number f vegetarians has almst dubled in the UK between 2012 and 2019. “That wuld seem t suggest smething ther than ptential genetic factrs are at play,” he says. “Peple g vegetarian because, mre and mre, they are cncerned abut climate, abut animal welfare r abut their health,” he says, which are mre imprtant determinants than physilgical factrs.
28. What’s the effect f RIOK3?
A. T affect the metablism f chlesterl.B. T influence the immune system.
C. T shift chlesterl and fatty mlecules.D. T affect the diet f vegetarianism.
29. Accrding t Yaseen’s study, wh are mre likely t prduce lipid mlecules appearing in meat?
A. Omnivres.B. Meat-eaters.C. Vegetarians.D. Weight-lsers.
30. What des the underline wrd “deficient” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. lacking.B. limited.C. rich.D. enugh.
31. Which f the fllwing might Richard agree mst?
A. Genetic factrs are the decisive reasns fr being a vegetarian.
B. The ppularity f vegetarianism has been n a sharp increase glbally.
C. Peple chse t be a vegetarian mainly fr ethical and health cncerns.
D. Sme peple fail t be a vegetarian because they tend t give up halfway.

The rainfrests are alive with the sund f animals. Besides the pleasure f the din, it is als useful t eclgists. If yu want t measure the bidiversity f a piece f land, listening ut fr animal calls is much easier than digging abut in the undergrwth lking fr tracks. But such “bi-acustic analysis” is still time-cnsuming, and it requires an expert pair f ears.
In a paper published n Octber 17th in Nature Cmmunicatins, a grup f researchers led by Jörg Müller, an eclgist at the University f Würzburg, describe a better way: have a cmputer d the jb. Smartphne apps already exist that will identify birds, bats r mammals simply by listening t the sunds they make. Their idea was t apply the principle t cnservatin wrk.
The researchers tk recrdings frm acrss 43 sites in the Ecuadrean rainfrest. Sund recrdings were taken fur times every hur, ver tw weeks. The varius calls were identified manually by an expert, and then used t cnstruct a list f the species present. As expected, the lnger the land had been free frm agricultural activity, the greater the bidiversity it hsted.
Then it was the cmputer’s turn. The researchers fed their recrdings t artificial-intelligence mdels that had been trained, using sund samples frm elsewhere in Ecuadr, t identify 75 bird species frm their calls. “We fund that the AI tls culd identify the sunds as well as the experts,” says Dr Müller.
Of curse, nt everything in a rainfrest makes a nise. Dr Müller and his clleagues used light-traps t capture night-flying insects, and DNA analysis t identify them. Reassuringly, they fund that the diversity f nisy animals was a reliable prxy (指标) fr the diversity f the quieter nes, t.
The results may have relevance utside eclgy departments, t. Under pressure frm their custmers, firms such as L’Oreal, a make-up cmpany, and Shell, an il firm, have been spending mney n frest restratin prjects arund the wrld. Dr Müller hpes that an autmated apprach t checking n the results culd help mnitr such effrts, and give a standardized way t measure whether they are wrking as well as their spnsrs say.
32. Which f the fllwing best describes Dr Müller’s methd f bi-acustic analysis?
A. Cstly.B. Impractical.C. High-tech.D. Labr-cnsuming.
33. What can we learn frm the research f Dr Müller?
A. The species in the rainfrests have increased.
B. Agricultural activity negatively influenced the richness in species.
C. There are mre reliable sund recrdings in Ecuadrean rainfrest.
D. Trained AI mdels can identify as many kinds f sunds as experts.
34. Why did the Dr Müller and his clleagues d the survey in Paragraph 5?
A. T figure ut the species f quieter animals.
B. T cnfirm the bidiversity f the quieter animals.
C. T emphasize the bidiversity f the nisy animals.
D. T cmpare the nisy animals and the quieter nes.
35. What’s the main idea f the last paragraph?
A. The investment in bi-acustic analysis.
B. The imprtance f frest restratin prjects.
C. The standard t measure the autmated apprach.
D. The research’s impact n frest restratin prjects.
