The topic “slash youth”, referring to those refusing to be defined or bound by just one personal identity and choosing to undertake multiple careers, has fueled heated debate on social media. On Douban, a Chinese social networking platform, the topic has attracted about 11,000posts and has been viewed over 400 million times.
China’s young people are keen to share their slash youth stories online, presenting themselves as multiple and sometimes distinct identities, such as a nurse and model, a teacher and stand-up comedian, and an engineer and musician.
Xing Eryang, a 31-year-old female resident in Beijing, founded the Douban topic in 2021.While staying diligent about her daytime work, she is developing her hobbies, including stand-up comedy and vlogging, into secondary careers during her spare time. And she is amazed to find her “slash life” philosophy followed by so many of her peers.
Weiheng, a 26-year-old woman in Guangzhou, and Tang Yuhan, a 27-year-old man in Xuancheng city, Anhui province, are both participants in the topic, with their stories earning thousands of likes so far. The two are both musicians in their spare time, even though they are thousands of miles apart and have different jobs in media and finance. Their passion for music has grown since college and they didn’t abandon their enthusiasm, even after entering the workplace.
Their reaction showed the gap between the young and former generations. “My parents used to say, ‘music cannot earn you money’, so the band thing was regarded as a waste of time. However, we want to pursue whatever we love and are willing to pay for it.” says Weiheng.
“The ‘slash life’ mania(狂热)shows that, along with China’s economic development, our society is becoming
more and more diversified and inclusive, and it welcomes everyone’s self-fulfillment,” says Shi Yanrong, an associate researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Young people no longer have to rely on work and money for their sense of self-worth. They tend to practice a carpe diem(活在当下)philosophy and create their own identities.”
24. What are “slash youth” more likely to do?
A. Create a topic on Douban.
B. Take diverse occupations.
C. Become a stand-up comedian.
D. Share their own stories online.
25. Which of the following amazes Xing Eryang?
A. Other young people’s positive response.
B. Hobbies developed while working.
C The growing social networking platform.
D. Thousands of likes earned on Douban.
26. What did Weiheng and Tang Yuhan do to pursue their musical career?
A. They sent their stories online to gain more funds.
B. They shared similar interests in both their hobbies and jobs.
C. They never lost passion for music even if they had to quit college.
D. They stuck with their dream despite the older generation’s opinion.
27. According to Shi Yanrong, what is our society’s attitude to the “slash life”?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
C. Unfavorable. D. Indifferent.

For years, David James, who studies insects at Washington State University, had wanted to examine the migration (迁徙)patterns of West Coast monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶). The route the butterflies travel has been hardly known because the populations are too small to follow. For every 200 monarchs tagged ( 打 标 签 )by a researcher, only one is usually recovered at the end of its trip, James says, and finding even 200 in the wild to tag is
unlikely. Knowing the route is vital to conservation efforts, but James had no way to figure it out- until he got a phone call from Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
The prison was looking for new activities to improve the mental health of those serving long-term sentences. So James began working with prisoners to raise monarchs through the whole process of their transformation. The adult insects were then tagged and released from the prison. Over five years, nearly 10, 000 monarchs flew from the facility. Elsewhere in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, researchers released another few thousand.
The tags included email addresses, and soon after the first butterflies took off, James started receiving messages from people who had spotted them. The butterflies, the reports confirmed, wintered in coastal California. Twelve of them landed at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz. Several more headed to Bolinas and Morro Bay.
The work helps researchers identify ideal places to plant milkweed and other vegetation that are important to the life cycle of West Coast monarch butterflies. It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners. “They were very worried that they were going to harm the butterflies, ”James says. Watching the monarch change their form also touched the men. “This butterfly changed, ” James recalls prisoners telling him, “and maybe we can too. ”
28.What was hard for David to do in his study?

A.To guarantee their safety.
B.To enable them to fly longer distances.

D.To distinguish them from other species.
30.What makes the prisoners feel that they can change?
A.The patience the butterflies showed.
B.The hardship the butterflies underwent.
C.The transformation of the butterflies.
D.The devotion of James to the butterflies.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The impact of the research.
B.The findings of James’ study.
C.The release of the prisoners.
D.The life cycle of the butterflies.
Sleep plays an important part in repairing the body and keeping us healthy, but with all of the demands of modem living, getting a good night's sleep can be a challenge. Using electronic products such as computers and smartphones has been considered to disturb sleep because of the blue light given off by their LED displays. Yet, new research has shown that screen time alone may not be as harmful as we thought before.
Scientists at the University of Manchester measured the impact of colored light on the sleep patterns of mice to learn more about how different colors act on the body. They said that twilight (暮色) could provide a physical signal to tell you when to sleep. So, using brighter, warmer lights in the day and cooler lights in the evening could be better for people's health.
“Melanopsin (黑视蛋白) makes people easily feel the difference of brightness. Researchers try to change the impacts of light on sleep by adjusting the brightness signals identified by melanopsin,” said Dr Tim Brown, a senior lecturer at the School of Medical Sciences and one of the study's authors. So not being exposed to blue light and staring at your electronic products for a long time could really help adjust your sleep.”
However, reducing brightness may be more helpful than simply controlling the amount of blue light. And blue light remover that warms up the screens of computers or smartphones by increasing yellow light could actually be harmful to sleep. Harvard Medical School links exposure (接触) to blue light at night to cancer and heart disease. The health warnings about blue light run deeper than disturbed sleep. Though sunlight is the main source of blue light, the way we stare at computers and smartphones for long periods gives cause for concern.
32.Why did scientists conduct the research according to Paragraph 2?
A.To know people's screen using habits.
B.To test the effects of electronic products on sleep patterns.
C.To find out the influence of colored light on physical health.
D.To change people’s negative feelings toward colored light.
33.What is the main feature of melanopsin?
A.It avoids lots of harm to our eyes.
B.It provides the most suitable light.
C.It makes people see things clearly.
D.It presents information of brightness changes.
34.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.More blue light at night harms people’s skin.
B.Sunlight provides people with helpful blue light.
C.Using yellow light on the screen could protect people’s eyes.
D.Turning down screen brightness before sleep can reduce health risks.
35.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Health. B.Business. C.Technology. D.Entertainment.
Music influences your emotions. In turn, your emotions influence your behavior. One of these is your food intake. 36____ What does science say about this subject?
Researchers at the University of Arkansas studied how music influences people when they eat in a restaurant. For the study, they used four types of music: jazz, classical, rock, and hip-hop. Their results showed that people had more appetite when they listened to jazz music while they ate. ____37____ This has a lot to do with emotions. For instance, when you listen to music with harmonic rhythms like jazz, you feel happier. This increases your appetite.
However, another study published in Psychological Reports suggests it isn’t only increased appetite that causes people to eat more. ____38____ A more stimuli-filled environment makes you eat more. In fact, they tend to urge you on to eat and even “encourage” you to eat faster. On the other hand, if the atmosphere in the restaurant is relaxed, you’re likely to feel more relaxed and spend more time enjoying yourself. For this reason, you’ll tend to eat less.
Besides, the study conducted by the Journal of the Academy suggests that the volume of music can also have an effect on how you eat. More specifically, the study states that, with low-volume music, you eat better because you make healthier choices. On the other hand, the study claims that music at high volume increases stimulation and stress. ____39____
For this reason, restaurants should consider the fact when thinking about the optimization of their products and services. ____40____ They equip themselves with the technology needed to provide memorable experiences through music, greatly strengthening their relationship with the customer.
A.Does music influence how you eat?
B.Being in a rush to eat also plays a part.
C.Does your emotion boost your appetite?
D.However, they had less appetite when listening to hip-hop.
E.In fact, many catering establishments have already taken action.
F.This could prove to be quite an interesting concept for restaurants.
G.This means you’re more likely to order comfort food or other unhealthy options.

An expedition with friends
Joseph was my best friend. He was the only son of Adam Tan, a well-known former athlete and a member of the first Malaysia team to reach the South Pole in an expedition. Hence, many expected Joseph to be as sporting as his father. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Since he was young, he has been physically weak. He suffered from asthma (哮喘) and preferred to stay indoors. He preferred to read books and was nicknamed “Professor”unkindly in class. He did not seem to mind these remarks until one day. That particular day marked the first death anniversary of his father who died tragically on the last mile of his expedition in the Mautu wilderness in Africa.
So on this anniversary of his father’s death,he was stung by Bala and Azhar, his classmates. They had called him “weakling”,remarking that he was a disgrace to his father. He lost his cool and fought with the bullies. Of course, he lost. From that day onwards, Joseph devoted himself to building up his body and turned his efforts enthusiastically to sports. No one, he vowed, would bully or compare him unfavorably to his father.
Joseph joined the scout’s troop (童子军) in my school and became its leader. We were all excited when we learned that the school had planned an expedition in Kalimantan, Indonesia. It was also meant to be in memory of Joseph’s father, who was its former adviser.
The expedition really tested the spirit and skills of my fellow scouts. Determined, we crossed a mountain, a river and a forest. The last stage was the jungle and we were within sight of our target. We had only four more kilometers to cover before we would successfully complete our expedition in the required time.

根据第一段的“The route the butterflies travel has been hardly known because the populations are too small to follow. For every 200 monarchs tagged (打标签)by a researcher, only one is usually recovered at the end of its trip, James says, and finding even 200 in the wild to tag is unlikely.( 蝴蝶的飞行路线几乎不为人知,因为它们的数量太少,无法跟随。詹姆斯说,每200只被研究人员标记的帝王蝴蝶,通常只有一只在旅行结束时被找到,而在野外找到200只帝王蝶也不太可能。)”可知,对于戴维来说,研究中最困难的是找到足够的黑脉金斑蝶。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“The tags included email addresses, and soon after the first butterflies took off, James started receiving messages from people who had spotted them. The butterflies, the reports confirmed, wintered in coastal California. Twelve of them landed at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz. Several more headed to Bolinas and Morro Bay. ( 这些标签包括电子邮件地址,在第一批蝴蝶起飞后不久,詹姆斯开始收到发现它们的人发来的信息。报道证实,这些蝴蝶在加州沿海过冬。其中12只降落在圣克鲁斯的Lighthouse Field State Beach。更多的前往Bolinas和Morro Bay。)”可推断,在释放之前给这些蝴蝶打上标签是为了跟踪它们的旅行路线。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的“It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners. ‘They were very worried that they were going to harm the butterflies,’James says. Watching the monarch change their form also touched the men.‘This butterfly changed,’James recalls prisoners telling him, ‘and maybe we can too.’(它也带来了一些囚犯的温和的一面。“他们非常担心他们会伤害蝴蝶,”詹姆斯说。看着黑脉金斑蝶改变他们的形式也感动了这些男人。“这只蝴蝶改变了,”詹姆斯回忆说,囚犯告诉他,“也许我们也可以。”)”可知,蝴蝶的改变感动了这些囚犯,他们觉得蝴蝶可以变形,他们也可以改变,因此可知是蝴蝶的改变让囚犯感觉自己也可以改变。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段的“The work helps researchers identify ideal places to plant milkweed and other vegetation that are important to the life cycle of West Coast monarch butterflies. It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners.( 这项工作帮助研究人员确定理想了的种植马利筋和其他植被的地方,这些植被对西海岸黑脉金斑蝶蝶的生命周期很重要。它也激发了一些囚犯温和的一面。)”可推断,本段主要讲述这项研究工作的影响。故选A。
D

根据第二段“Scientists at the University of Manchester measured the impact of colored light on the sleep patterns of mice to learn more about how different colors act on the body. They said that twilight (暮色) could provide a physical signal to tell you when to sleep. So, using brighter, warmer lights in the day and cooler lights in the evening could be better for people's health.(曼彻斯特大学的科学家们测量了不同颜色的光线对老鼠睡眠模式的影响,以了解更多不同颜色对身体的作用。他们说,暮色可以提供一个物理信号,告诉你什么时候睡觉。所以,白天使用更亮、更暖的灯光,晚上使用更冷的灯光可能对人们的健康更好)”可知,科学家们进行研究是为了了解彩色光对身体健康的影响。故选C。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段““Melanopsin (黑视蛋白) makes people easily feel the difference of brightness. Researchers try to change the impacts of light on sleep by adjusting the brightness signals identified by melanopsin,” said Dr Tim Brown, a senior lecturer at the School of Medical Sciences and one of the study's authors. (“黑视蛋白让人很容易感觉到亮度的差异。研究人员试图通过调节黑视蛋白识别的亮度信号来改变光线对睡眠的影响,”医学科学院高级讲师、该研究的作者之一蒂姆·布朗博士说)”可知,黑视蛋白的特征就是显示亮度的变化。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, reducing brightness may be more helpful than simply controlling the amount of blue light.(然而,降低亮度可能比简单地控制蓝光的数量更有帮助)” 可知,本段主要讲屏幕的亮度对健康有潜在的风险,因此在睡觉前降低屏幕亮度可以降低健康风险。
根据文章第一段“Using electronic products such as computers and smartphones has been considered to disturb sleep because of the blue light given off by their LED displays. Yet, new research has shown that screen time alone may not be as harmful as we thought before.(人们认为使用电脑、智能手机等电子产品会干扰睡眠,因为这些产品的LED显示屏会发出蓝光。然而,新的研究表明,单单看屏幕的时间可能并不像我们之前认为的那样有害)”以及下文说明可知,文章主要讲述的是屏幕的亮度比蓝光的数量对人体健康风险更大。由此可知,本文是关于健康方面的内容。故选A。
Music influences your emotions. In turn, your emotions influence your behavior. One of these is your food intake. ____16____ What does science say about this subject?
Researchers at the University of Arkansas studied how music influences people when they eat in a restaurant. For the study, they used four types of music: jazz, classical, rock, and hip-hop. Their results showed that people had more appetite when they listened to jazz music while they ate. ____17____ This has a lot to do with emotions. For instance, when you listen to music with harmonic rhythms like jazz, you feel happier. This increases your appetite.
However, another study published in Psychological Reports suggests it isn’t only increased appetite that causes people to eat more. ____18____ A more stimuli-filled environment makes you eat more.
For this reason, restaurants should consider the fact when thinking about the optimization of their products and services. ____20____ They equip themselves with the technology needed to provide memorable experiences through music, greatly strengthening their relationship with the customer.
A. Does music influence how you eat?
B. Being in a rush to eat also plays a part.
C. Does your emotion boost your appetite?
D. However, they had less appetite when listening to hip-hop.
E. In fact, many catering establishments have already taken action.
F. This could prove to be quite an interesting concept for restaurants.
G. This means you’re more likely to order comfort food or other unhealthy options.
A 17. D 18. B 19. G 20. E
