Los Angeles is always a popular holiday destination. To fully enjoy your travel there, you should know its food, weather, and also traffic. While driving in L. A. is similar to that in other areas, there are a few specific rules to note.
HOV lanes (车道)
On many L. A. freeways, one or more lanes at the far left are used as high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. They usually have limited access and you can only enter or exit where there is a break in the double yellow line. Most HOV lanes require a minimum of two people in the car; some require three. Vehicles towing trailers (拖车) are NOT allowed in the HOV lane, regardless of how many people are in them.
Toll (收费) lanes
On certain freeways, the HOV lanes are double-purposed as toll lanes for people driving alone who have a FasTrak, an electronic toll collection system. Therefore, you also have to have one in that lane as a HOV, which is inconvenient if you’re just visiting. FasTrak is in effect on parts of the 110 freeway between the 405 and 10 freeways, and on parts of the 10 freeway east of Downtown L. A.
Cell phones
It is against the law to talk on a cell phone while driving without using a hands-free device. Holding a cell phone to your ear while driving will land you with a ticket.
Alcohol
Driving under the influence is taken seriously in L.A. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08%, but you can be charged with lower levels if they show you can’t function normally. Placing an opened bottle of alcohol in the passenger area while driving (or sitting) is illegal. Any opened container of alcohol has to be transported in the trunk.
21. What do you know about HOV lanes?
A. They encourage people to share cars.
B. They are on the far right of freeways.
C. They are intended for larger vehicles.
D. They allow cars to enter over the double yellow line.
22. Which is surely against the road rules in L. A.?
A. Driving on the 110 freeway with a FasTrak.
B. Putting the cell phone in the car while driving.
C. Riding with an opened bottle of alcohol in back seats.
D. Going below the blood alcohol limit of 0. 08%.
23. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A traffic law. B. A road map.
C. A guidebook. D. A report.
A 22. C 23. C

Charles Darwin was born into a family of thinkers. His father was a Fellow of the Royal Society(the elite circle of top British scientists),his mother was the daughter of Josiah Wedgwood, the man who founded the famous Wedgwood Potteries, and his grandfather,Erasmus Darwin, was a famous physician, thinker and philosopher who, like his grandson, spent much time studying the evolution of life.
After a childhood in the town of Shrewsbury, where he was educated at the Grammar School,Darwin went up to Edinburgh University to study medicine and natural history. When he was eighteen,he left Edinburgh and went to Cambridge University, planning to enter the church, but he was more interested in science than in religion and later he abandoned theology.
Shortly after graduating from Cambridge,he got a job as a naturalist on the ship H. M. S. Beagle, which was about to start on a scientific and cartographic(地图的)survey of the South American coast. The journey started in December 1831 and was to last almost five years, during which time he collected considerable documentation.
Darwin was struck by the animals of the south seas, particularly by the tortoises he found on the Galapagos Islands,a group of Pacific Islands. The Galapagos tortoises,Darwin observed, differed from island to island, and this,he inferred, showed different forms of evolution, since the animals obviously came from the same origins. Darwin was also struck by the iguanas(蜥蜴)he found, and observed that those which lived in water had heads suitable for finding food among stones, while those that lived on land had a sharper head, more fit for a herbivorous(食草的)animal.
Darwin developed his theory of evolution, but it was not until 1859 that he actually published it. It was instantly seen as a great milestone in scientific thought, and attracted violent argument all over Europe. Many found fault in it,and Darwin spent the rest of his life improving his theory in the light of other people's observations.
24. What is the purpose of para.1?
A. To honour his family.
B. To increase his popularity.
C. To show his family's influence on him.
D. To highlight his family's contributions.
25. What did Darwin end up studying at Cambridge University?
A. Science. B. Theology. C. Medicine. D. Natural history.
26. Why were the iguanas different from island to island?
A. Because of their types. B. Because of their habitats.
C. Because of their foods. D. Because of their origins.
27. What can be learned about Darwin's theory of evolution?
A. He felt quite content with it. B. He published it once finished.
C. It caused a worldwide disagreement. D. It was a great breakthrough in science.
C 25. A 26. B 27. D

“Did you hear what happened to Adam last Friday?” Lindsey whispers to Tori
With her eyes shining,Tori brags,“You bet I did,Sean told me two days ago. ”
Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happened to be yours truly,Adam Freedman. I can tell you that what they are saying is(a)not nice and(b)not even true. Still,Lindsey and Tori aren't very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话). I have noticed three effects of gossip:it can hurt people,it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group.
An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic—breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out–that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is,the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.
If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it?The answer lies in another effect of gossip:the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor(传言)can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group”. In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority(优越感 ).
Gossip also can have a third effect:it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The dos and don'ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.
The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have.
28. Why is a conversation given at the beginning of the passage?
A. To introduce a topic. B. To present an argument.
C. To tell a story. D. To clarify the writing purpose.
29. What important negative effect does gossip have?
A. Breaking up relationships. B. Embarrassing the listener.
C. Spreading information around. D. Causing unpleasant experiences.
30. Why do many people like to gossip?
A. It gives them a feeling of pleasure. B. It helps them make more friends.
C. It makes them better at telling stories. D. It enables them to meet important people
31. Professor David Wilson thinks that gossip can
A. provide students with written rules
B. make people watch their own behaviors
C. force school to improve student handbooks
D. attract the police's attention to group behaviors
A 29. D 30. A 31. B
根据第一和第二段““Did you hear what happened to Adam last Friday?”Lindsey whispers to Tori. With her eyes shining, Tori brags, “You bet I did, Sean told me two days ago.”(“你听说亚当上周五发生了什么事吗?”林赛对托丽耳语道。托丽两眼放光,得意地说:“当然了,肖恩两天前告诉我的。”)”可知,这两段叙述了两个人在说别人闲话的场景。根据第三段中的“Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happened to be yours truly, Adam Freedman, I can tell you that what they are saying is (a) not nice and (b) not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren't very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip . (琳赛和托丽说的是谁?只是碰巧是你的真命天子,亚当·弗里德曼。我可以告诉你,他们说的是(a)不友好(b)甚至不真实。不过,林赛和托丽与林顿高中的大多数学生,包括我,并没有太大的不同。我们的许多谈话都是闲谈)”可知,说闲话这种事几乎人人都会做。根据“I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group. (我注意到八卦的三个影响:它会伤害人,它会给说闲话的人一种奇怪的满足感,它会在一个群体中造成社会压力)”可知,下文主要叙述“说闲话”的三个影响。由此推知,文章开头引用两人的交谈是为了引出“说闲话”这个话题。故选A项。
根据第四段的第一句“An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about.(八卦的一个重要负面影响是,它会伤害被谈论的人)”可知流言会给被谈论的人带来不愉快的经历。故选D项。
根据第五段的第二句“The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us.(答案就在于八卦的另一个影响:它给我们带来的满足感)”可知散播流言能给人带来满足感,即快乐的感觉。故选A项。
根据第六段的第二句“Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group.(大卫·威尔逊教授解释说,八卦在监督群体行为方面很重要)”可知流言在监督一个群体内的行为方面很重要。故选B项。
D
Microsoft is reportedly delighted with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a natural-language artificial-intelligence program capable of generating text that reads as if a human wrote it. Taking advantage of easy access to finance over the past decade, companies and venture-capital funds invested billions in an AI arms race, resulting in a technology that can now be used to replace humans across a wider range of tasks. This could be a disaster not only for workers, but also for consumers and even investors.
The problem for workers is obvious: there will be fewer jobs requiring strong communication skills, and thus fewer positions that pay well. Cleaners, drivers, and some other manual workers will keep their jobs, but everyone else should be afraid. Consider customer service. Instead of hiring people to interact with customers, companies will increasingly rely on generative AIs like ChatGPT to comfort angry callers with clever and soothing words. Fewer entry-level jobs will mean fewer opportunities to start a career.
Consumers, too, will suffer. Chatbots may be fine for handling entirely routine questions, but it is not routine questions that generally lead people to call customer service. When there is a real issue – like an airline coming to a standstill or a pipe bursting in your basement – you want to talk to a well-qualified, empathetic professional with the ability to tackle problems. You do not want to be put on hold for eight hours, but nor do you want to speak immediately to a talkative but ultimately useless chatbot.
Today, the predictive power of algorithms (算法) should be used to help people, rather than to replace them. If AIs can offer recommendations for human consideration, the ability to use such recommendations wisely will be recognized as a valuable human skill. Unfortunately, these opportunities are being neglected. Everyone is focused on using AI to cut labor costs, with little concern not only for the immediate customer experience but also for the future of American consumption power.
32. What kind of employees are most likely to lose their jobs?
A. City cleaners. B. Taxi drivers.
C. Delivery men. D. Telephone operators.
33. What’s disadvantage of a chatbot?
A. It can’t handle realistic problems.
B. It needs real persons to operate on it.
C. It doesn’t have ability to comfort customers.
D. It can’t cope with routine questions well enough.
34. What is author’s attitude towards AI-based products?
A. Delighted but suspicious.
B. Concerned and negative.
C. Supportive but cautious.
D. Neutral and indifferent.
35. Which is the best title for the story?
A. What’s Wrong with ChatGPT?
B. Dangerous ChatGPT:Troublemaker.
C. What’s ChatGPT?
D. Future of AI Has Come.
【答案】32 D 33. A 34. B 35. A
根据第二段前两句“The problem for workers is obvious: there will be fewer jobs requiring strong communication skills, and thus fewer positions that pay well. Cleaners, drivers, and some other manual workers will keep their jobs, but everyone else should be afraid. (工人们面临的问题很明显:需要强大沟通技巧的工作岗位将会减少,因此薪资高的职位也会减少。清洁工、司机和其他一些体力劳动者将保住他们的工作,但其他人应该感到害怕。)”可知,清洁工、司机和劳动者会保住自己的工作,而在需要沟通技巧岗位上的可能会失去工作。故D项“电话接线员”很有可能失去工作。故选D项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第二句“When there is a real issue – like an airline coming to a standstill or a pipe bursting in your basement – you want to talk to a well-qualified, empathetic professional with the ability to tackle problems.(当出现真正的问题时——比如一家航空公司陷入瘫痪或你地下室的管道爆裂——你想要和一个合格的、有同理心的、有能力解决问题的专业人士谈谈。)” 故选A项。
根据第一段最后一句“This could be a disaster not only for workers, but also for consumers and even investors. 这不仅对工人来说是一场灾难,对消费者甚至投资者来说也是一场灾难。)”,第四段第一句“Today, the predictive power of algorithms (算法) should be used to help people, rather than to replace them.(今天,算法的预测能力应该被用来帮助人们,而不是取代他们。)”和最后一句“Everyone is focused on using AI to cut labor costs, with little concern not only for the immediate customer experience but also for the future of American consumption power.(每个人都专注于使用人工智能来削减劳动力成本,不仅很少关心眼前的客户体验,也很少关心美国未来的消费能力。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段最后一句“Fewer entry-level jobs will mean fewer opportunities to start a career.(入门级工作越少,开启职业生涯的机会就越少。)”,第三段最后一句“You do not want to be put on hold for eight hours, but nor do you want to speak immediately to a talkative but ultimately useless chatbot.(你不想等待8个小时,但你也不想立即与一个健谈但最终无用的聊天机器人交谈。)”以及第四段第二、三句“If AIs can offer recommendations for human consideration, the ability to use such recommendations wisely will be recognized as a valuable human skill. Unfortunately, these opportunities are being neglected. (如果人工智能可以提供建议供人类考虑,那么明智地使用这些建议的能力将被视为一种有价值的人类技能。不幸的是,这些机会被忽视了。)”可知,文章主要介绍了ChatGPT 的一些问题。A项“What’s Wrong with ChatGPT? (ChatGPT有什么问题?)”概括全文,可以作为标题。故选A项。

Unforgettable Book Throws Light on Racism
Today, I would like to recommend a book to you, which taught me an important lesson about prejudice and racism. ____36____ The story is set in Alabama in the southern US, where the author grew up.
The main character in this novel is a lawyer named Atticus Finch from the American South. The American South in the 1960s was known to be a place where many white people looked down upon black people, except for Finch. When the local judge asked him to defend a black man named Tom Robinson, who was wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Finch agreed. ____37____ Still, Finch fought to discover the truth, even though he was under threat. He proved that Robinson is innocent (清白的). As Finch’s son Jem and daughter Scout grew up, they started to see more racial prejudice around them. ____38____
The author Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama in 1926. In her childhood, she, like Scout and Jem, learned about racial prejudice and the damage it could do. To Kill a Mockingbird was her first and only novel published. ____39____
For me, the most memorable quotes in the book are “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but… sing their hearts out for us. ____40____” The description of childhood innocence in the story through Scout and Jem is connected with the dark evils of prejudice in the town, which provides a dramatic contrast and enables you to understand how dangerous racism and prejudice are.
My name is Maeli. I am so lucky, because I have Lizzy Jo. She is my cousin and my friend! We are close. We talk about everything from our dreams, our sad things to the things we value most such as her beautiful bracelets (手链) and my beads (有孔的珠子).
Yesterday our teacher brought out a big box just before the last bell rang. “I have a little gift for each of you,” she said. Then she gave each of us a perfect popcorn ball. Each popcorn ball was in clear bag that was tied with a ribbon (丝带). Just that little ribbon made the gift look so fancy! Sometimes, it’s the tiny details that make things special.
I happen to have a great appreciation for popcorn balls, so I was pleased. Lizzy Jo and I rode the bus home. The moment I was off the bus, I untied the ribbon and put it into my pocket. Then I took the popcorn ball out of the plastic bag. I didn’t even stop walking. Unfortunately, my feet were in a big hurry to get home, and sometimes when feet are in a hurry, they trip.
My feet tripped. I fell. And my perfect popcorn ball dropped right into a dirty puddle (水坑). I was okay, but my popcorn ball wasn’t. Have you ever seen a perfect popcorn ball in a dirty puddle? It isn’t something that you want to take a photo of and frame and keep forever.
I looked at my popcorn ball. That moment definitely was NOT the time to use the two second rule. Last week at my grandma’s house I used the two second rule. I accidentally dropped my cookie on her floor. I picked it up REALLY fast, and I admit that I ate that cookie. But this was a very different situation. This involved a puddle.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I wanted to cry.

I went to my room and opened my box of beautiful beads.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: I wanted to cry. Maybe it’s silly to cry over a popcorn ball, but I was highly disappointed! Lizzy Jo gave me a hug. “Take mine,” she said. “But won’t you be sad without your popcorn ball?” I asked. “Well, losing something and giving something are two very different things. Giving mine doesn’t make me sad at all. Take it. I want you to have it,” said Lizzy Jo. Later that night I ate the popcorn ball. I looked at the ribbon. And I had an idea.
Paragraph 2: I went to my room and opened my box of beautiful beads. I chose the prettiest beads that I had. I used the ribbon from the bag on the popcorn ball and my beads to make a bracelet. It was attractive! I went next door to Lizzy Jo’s house. She smiled her biggest, happiest smile when she saw it. “Oh! The ribbon, so creative! You didn’t have to do that, you know, Thank you, Maeli!” she said. She gave me a hug. “Take it. I want you to have it,” I said with a smile.
