I'll never forget the day when Mary came into my office and said, I am too old to learn how to use a computer. I shook my head. Here was a woman who had raised 6 children and who had made great progress in her career telling me that she was too old to learn something new. I told her that I always believed people were never too old to learn.
Mary followed my advice and did learn how to use the computer. Now, she is retired and leading a very active life volunteering in her community( 社区 ),using her computer skills and helping anyone that needs help.
When she was in her sixties(六十岁), one day she called me and said she had played the piano for others all her life, and now she was going to make a CD of her own. My mind flashed back to the day when she told me she was too old to learn. You can imagine my surprise and delight.
To produce the CD, she had a lot of things to learn. It was not just sitting at the piano and playing. She had to research the songs, learn about copyright(版权), and learn about marketing. It was pretty amazing for someone who once said she was too old to learn. And finally she made it. Now she has her own CD-Mixed Blessings.
Most of you probably have heard about some people who have gone back to university in their seventies and have also graduated. They are on their way again to charging themselves with a new skill and a new attitude towards life. The point is you are unable to learn anything at any age if you believe you are too old. On the contrary(正相反), you can achieve anything at any age if you believe you can.

C. became disappointed with her D. thought what she had said was true

In 1975, George Carlin appeared on a popular TV show, Saturday Night Live, with his famous words about blue food. "Why is there no blue food? I can’t find blue food — I can’t find the flavor of blue! I mean yellow is lemon; orange is orange and red is cherry. Where is the blue food?"[来源:学科网ZXXK]
Well, Carlin pretty much has it right — there is not no blue food, but there’s certainly not a lot of it. Fresh-picked blueberries are blue, though they become purple when they are turned into jam. The blue in blueberries — like the purple in grapes and red in tomatoes — is found in nature. But it isn’t a hot color for food. People don’t seem to prefer blue food. Some diet programs even suggest that those determined to lose weight should make their food blue.
Eating, in part, begins with our eyes. Chares Spence — an experimental psychologist from Oxford University — points out that color can change our taste experience. Commonly, we consider red-colored foods up to 20% sweeter than they actually are; and green foods as being more sour. Spence suggests: human expectations may be influenced by our long history of watching — green fruits can become sweet as they grow up and turn red..
But what about blue? Except blueberries, much of the blue food we see these days is dyed blue artificially(人工地). Food producers argue that artificial color doesn’t do much damage to health. A lot of research shows that some physical problems of kids are related to food dyes — while other studies show no effects at all. Blue birthday cake or even blue-dyed chicken can be served on the dinner table. So what?
28. George Carlin’s words are placed (放置)at the beginning of the passage to ___________.
A. show the author’s opinion B. tell a famous person
C. lead in the topic D. introduce a TV show
29. Which of the following statements of blue is true?

B. Blueberries are always blue, whether fresh or not.
C. Blue is not a very popular color for foods.
D. People often feel cold when they eat blueberries.
30. Eating sometimes begins with our eyes because ______________.
A. our taste experience can be influenced by color
B. red-colored foods are 20% sweeter than green foods
C. people prefer red-colored foods to green foods
D. before eating, people watch food for a long time
31.The underlined words "is dyed" in Para. 4 are closest in meaning to "_____".
A. is eaten up B. has grown up C. is harmful to D. is changed in color

He explained that he wished to buy a pearl(珍珠) for his wife’s birthday and that the price didn’t matter because his business had been well run by him that year. After examining a number of beautiful and valuable pearls, he finally chose a nice black one that cost $5,000. He paid for the pearl, shook hands with the jeweler and left.
A few days later, the man returned and said his wife liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like it. It had to be exactly the same size and quality as she wanted a pair of earrings made. “Can you give me any advice on how to get such a pearl?” said the man. The jeweler replied, “I would say it’s nearly impossible to find an exact one like that pearl. I’m afraid I can’t make you satisfied.”
The rich man asked the jeweler to advertise(登广告) in the newspapers. “I will offer $25,000 for the matching pearl if you can find one.” Many people answered the ad, but nobody had a pearl that was just right. Just when the jeweler had given up hope, a little old lady came into his shop. 【答案】21.D 22.D 23.A
Bored? Lonely? Out of condition? Why not try the SPORTS CENTER?
Women: Tuesday and Thursday. Men: Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
根据文章小标题 TENNIS SKIING SWIMMING GOLF GYMNASTICS 和 AND MANY MORE下第一段中 Table Tennis, Snooker (台球), Darts (标枪) 可知,文章一共提到的运动项目有:网球、滑雪、游泳、高尔夫、体操、兵乓球、台球和标枪,即一共8种。故选A。
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.D 27.B
I told her that I always believed people were never too old to learn. 故选A。
When she was in her sixties, one day she called me and said she had played the piano for others all her life, and now she was going to make a CD of her own.
You can imagine my surprise and delight. To produce the CD, she had a lot of things to learn. It was not just sitting at the piano and playing. She had to research the songs, learn about copyright(版权),and learn about marketing.
On the contrary, you can achieve anything at any age if you believe you can.
此时,要注意一些转折词,如but, yet, however, although, in spite of, by contrast, on the contrary等。
On the contrary, you can achieve anything at any age if you believe you can.
【答案】28.C 29.C 30.A 31.D
文章首段George Carlin所说“Why is there no blue food?...”
根据第二段中“Fresh-picked blueberries are blue, though they become purple when they are turned into jam.”可知选项B错误;根据第二段中“The blue in blueberries—like the purple in grapes and the red in tomatoes—is found in nature.” Why is there no blue food?
根据第三段中“we consider red-colored foods up to 20% sweeter than they actually are; and green foods as being more sour.” 根据“human expectations may be influenced by our long history of watching”是指人类的饮食经历受长时间观察食物生长经验的影响,而不是说吃东西之前要观察很久,因此选项D错误。根据“that color can change our taste experience”,可知该题正确选项是A。
根据第三段结尾处“green fruits can become sweet as they grow up and turn red.”和后面“But what about blue? Except blueberries, much of the blue food we encounter these days is dyed blue artificially.”
如第四小题,根据第三段结尾处“green fruits can become sweet as they grow up and turn red.”和后面“But what about blue? Except blueberries, much of the blue food we encounter these days is dyed blue artificially.”
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.D 35.C
从文中的第一段第一句话“There are many festivals in Argentina(阿根廷) during the year.
从文中的第一段最后一句话“Even if you cannot dance perfectly, you should join the people and try to perform this dance.”

Hi Worried,
I'm sorry to know that you're having such a bad time at the moment. The truth is that everyone will have one of those periods when things seem to be going wrong,so you don't have to worry much. The most important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you'll regret. Here are three useful tips:
First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of letting your anger out without hurting others or yourself. Second,go outdoors and play team games with your friends as physical exercise is an effective way to get rid of anger. And third, remain optimistic about your future. Such a positive attitude towards life can be helpful in lifting your spirits.
I hope you'll soon feel calmer and carry on as normal.
Yours ,
Jamie

Para 1:
When the jeweler heard it, he got excited. After a careful examination, he was sure it was almost the same as the one he sold to the rich man. The jeweler could hardly hide his excitement, trying not to show it. The jeweler made several offers before the old lady would change her mind, but couldn’t satisfy her. At last the jeweler said, “For the last time I’ll offer $10,000 for the pearl.” The lady still hesitated but finally agreed because she really needed the money.
Para 2:
The jeweler finally bought the pearl and then called the hotel where the rich man stayed. Eager to tell the rich man the good news, he waited for the hotel to get him through to the rich man. He also imagined earning more money from the rich man. However, he was told the rich man had already checked out the day before, nowhere to be found. The jeweler immediately understood the whole thing. The rich man and the old lady had cheated him of his money together and had run away.
