Lauren Price has come a long way from a taxi driver to an Olympic champion. She pursued her Olympic dream all the way to winning the middleweight gold medal at the Tokyo Games.
“When I look back now, I have to pinch (掐) myself at times, because I still think it’s mad that I won the Olympics,” Price told the media.
Raised by her grandparents, she was always encouraged to play sports. “They’ve always backed me. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have achieved anything,” Price said. Her grandma used to say to her, “Reach for the moon and if you fall short, you’ll land on the stars.”
She began with football. But Price was also a high standard kickboxer and was then talent-scouted by a taekwondo coach before she switched to boxing.
“For me the big turning point was as a child being inspired by Kelly Holmes. I remember watching her on TV and I was like, “Oh My God, I want to go to the Olympics,” Price recalled. “I had that dream over the years. I just worked hard. I believe if you put the effort in, you’ll get to where you want to be.”
When Price was breaking into the Welsh boxing team, funding was extremely limited. So she worked as a driver fora taxi company when she was still a teenager. “I was training Monday to Thursday and then I was taxi driving Friday and Saturday nights. I’d start work at five pm and I’d finish at four in the morning, picking up all the drunken passengers,” she remembered. That was a different kind of education. “It’s quite funny now when I look back,” Price smiled.
Ultimately, she excelled as a boxer. Price won every major gold medal going, despite the difficulties of competing against bigger opponents outside of her weight class.

Maria Jones had just finished teaching a yoga class when she happened to notice an elderly man walking around by himself in the city centre of Aberdeen, Scotland.
As they shared a packet of chocolate bars over a coffee, Maria learned that Tom Smith, who was 83, had left his home that day for the first time in three years. Driven by extreme loneliness, he decided to take a ride on the bus. He’d taken two different buses that day.
According to Age UK, 1.1 million older people rely on using public transport for company. While health and mobility issues can lead to social isolation, the COVID-19 lockdown, coupled with the upsetting effect of the cost of living crisis, has contributed to a loneliness epidemic among the UK’s older population.
Senior expert Sally Baker sees the necessity of establishing a programme to reconnect the older people with their local communities. And helping them access local transport links is the first step. She says that she understands why travelling on public transport can help to reduce loneliness. It offers a setting for conversations to spark up. “Sitting side by side is often less inhibiting than direct eye contact,” she said.
However, Age UK is aware that many older people feel worried about getting out and about, with 38 percent saying they don’t feel confident using public transport.
That’s why the charity has initiated the Travelling Companions’ pilot programme, designed to help older people who might be feeling lonely to get out and about confidently. Each older person is matched with a volunteer who will help them achieve their travel goals.
One man at 80, who has been helped by Age UK’s new project, says, “The programme is making my world a lot bigger and brighter.”
5.Why is Tom Smith’s experience mentioned in the text?
A.To give an example of someone getting lost.
B.To introduce the major topic to be discussed.
C.To illustrate the boring daily life of 80-year-olds.
D.To stress the value of chatting with older people.
6.What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A.Older people need help to rebuild social connections.
B.Travelling alone on buses can be unsafe for older people.
C.Many older people take buses to ease anxiety.
D.It’s necessary to offer older people free bus rides.
7.What is Age UK according to the text?
A.A research institute. B.A senior citizen care centre.

8.What is the text mainly about?
A.The widespread old age problem in the UK.
B.Loneliness among the UK’s older population.
C.A programme to help older people use public transport.
D.Volunteers who accompany the elderly people on their trips.

    Europe’s Best Upcoming Food Festivals
    Matstreif (Oslo, Norway), July 11-12
With a wide variety of dishes available at wallet-sparing prices, this event sees more than 200 food stalls open for business in Oslo’s City Hall Square.
Bold foodies should try “rakfisk”-rotten fish. If that sounds a bit much, there’s always “svele”, a kind of pancake that originates from western Norway.
Loch Lomond Food and Drink Festival (Loch Lomond, Scotland), August 4-6
The 10th annual edition of this festival offers one of the best showcases for Scottish produce. On the menu are local specialties and venison (鹿肉) from the surrounding national park.
For those who like a competitive edge with their lunch, there’s even a “haggis” eating contest that pits eight hungry visitors against each other to see who can eat a pound of the local food quickest.
Stutt garter Weindorf (Stuttgart, Germany), August 21-25
This food festival celebrates wine on the land of beer.
German wine is obviously underrated. Stuttgart’s annual Weindorf sees 28 open air restaurants serving more than 500 wines from Baden and Wurttemberg, with reds, whites, roses and sparkling versions all available. Fresh pretzels and chocolates will also be available to help mop up the alcohol.
    Cheese 2015 (Bra, Italy), August 27-September 2
The name is a bit of a giveaway here. This bi-annual event sees Italy’s best cheese makers gather on the small town of Bra.
It’s free to visit, although plenty of euros are needed to pay for samples and try out some of the courses on offer. Whatever they are hunting for, cheese lovers will be well taken care of. They just need to make sure there’’s time for post-cheese snooze before the next round of cheese tasting.
9.What can visitors do at the Norwegian food festival?
A.Try some pancakes. B.Eat a pound of haggis.
C.Drink red and white wines. D.Buy samples of cheese.
10.Where can people join in an eating competition?

In about 23 years,it may finally be time to look up. A recently discovered asteroid (小行星) has a chance of hitting the earth on Valentine’s Day in 2046. It was discovered on Feb.26 at an observatory in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
While the thought of an asteroid hitting the earth may sound concerning, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) says people shouldn’t be worried.
The asteroid has an estimated diameter of 160 feet, which is about the same size as an Olympic swimming pool or the width of a football field.
“We’ve been tracking a new asteroid named 2023 DW that has a very small chance of impacting the earth. Often when new objects are discovered, it takes several weeks’ data to reduce the uncertainties and adequately predict their orbits years into the future, “NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) said.
The asteroid is ranked on the Torino Scale as level 1 threat. The scale is a tool to categorize potential earth impacts, with zero being no threat and 10 being something that can cause a global disaster. One on the Torino Scale means 2023 DW is in the normal, or green zone.
“Current calculations show the chance of collision (碰撞) is extremely unlikely with no need for public concern,” NASA says of the green zone. “New telescopic observations will very likely lead to re-assignment to Level 0.”
Although 2023 DW doesn’t pose a great risk to the earth, NASA has been continuing to work to defend our planet from any asteroid that could cause disaster.
In September, 2022, NASA crashed its Double Asteroid Redirection Test spacecraft, or DART, into an asteroid to see if it could change the trajectory of the space rock. NASA later confirmed the mission was a success, and is continuing to research how effective the method is, should a massive asteroid be headed our way.
12.What does NASA’s PDCO say about 2023 DW?
A.It is too close to the earth. B.It must be destroyed in space.
C.Its orbit is still uncertain now. D.Its orbit should be changed.
13.How is 2023 DW ranked on the Torino Scale?
A.As Level zero threat. B.As Level ten threat.
C.In the normal zone. D.In the threatening zone.
14.What does the underlined word “trajectory” mean in the last paragraph?
    A.Size. B.Weight. C.Angle. D.Path.
15.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.An Asteroid Was Discovered at an Observatory in Chile
B.An Asteroid Is Coming Our Way, Unlikely to Hit Us
C.A Space Rock Has Just Passed the Earth
D.A Spacecraft Has Been Crashed Recently

A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms (习语), though my teacher stressed the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience.
One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished.
Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said, “You don’t say!” I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not an appropriate topic. “Well, I’d better change the topic.” So I said to him. “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was magnificent.” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was interrupted again by his words: “You don’t say!”. I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?”
“Well, I didn’t request you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised. I said, “Didn’t you say ‘you don’t say’?” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “‘You don’t say!’ actually means ‘Really!’. It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms.”

It was a wonderful and sunny day. I, along with my family, stayed in a beautiful, huge beach house, staring out at the ocean. But rather than enjoying myself, I felt like I had hit a button.
I moved my eyes to the ground directly below where I stood, where there was a short blacktop driveway and a few garbage cans. Mike walked here, and I asked him, “What do you think would happen if I jumped right now?” He looked down. “I think you’d be okay, ” he said. “You’d probably just break your legs. If you aimed for the trash cans, they might break your fall. ” Broken legs sounded pretty good to me, right then. It would mean I wouldn’t be able to do much - including work -for a few days.
Clearly, I had made a mistake in switching jobs within my company a few months earlier, and now I had to get myself out of the mess I’d created. I made it known that I wasn’t happy, that it wasn’t working out, and that I needed to get back to my old group doing what I know and love and do best, which is editing and writing.
But all routes were blocked, and my health was suffering, so my only choice was to leave. After I decide that, the stone in my heart was getting lighter.
The next day, June 6, something unexpected happened. Seemingly out of the blue, I got an email that said I had a green light to move back to my old group. Just like that.
I didn’t have to quit. I didn’t have to do anything but hug my good fortune and feel grateful that things had basically worked out in my favor. Now that my mind is free of the stress and anxiety I’d been dealing with for the last few months, I think I’ll be writing here more.

For centuries, people in the sunny Mediterranean (地中海) would get up after long, relaxing meals and take a walk, often to the town square to see neighbors and socialize. Walking is so much a part of the lifestyle that it is seen as the most important part of the super-healthy Mediterranean diet.
Studies have found why that it may be one of the reasons the Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk for some diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and some cancers — all the while strengthening bones, improving brain health, preventing dementia (痴呆) and helping with healthy weight loss.
Now you can add another reason to take a post-meal walk-it may lower your blood sugar. That trip doesn’t need to take up a huge amount of your time either: Walking as little as two to five minutes after a meal can do, according to a 2022 study in the journal Sports Medicine.
Standing after a meal can help, too, but not as much as putting one foot in front of the other, said study coauthor Aidan Buffey, a doctoral student in sport sciences department at the University of Limerick in Ireland.
“Standing on and off throughout the day and after meals reduced blood sugar on average by 9.51% compared to long hours of sitting. However, light-walking throughout the day saw a greater reduction of blood sugar by an average of 17.01% compared to long hours of sitting,” Buffey said.
“This suggests that breaking long hours of sitting with standing and light-walking throughout the day is good for blood sugar levels. Standing is good, but walking is better,” he added.

Don’t wish your life away, or you may end up getting what you wished for a little sooner than expected. By looking at genetic markers associated with cellular aging, researchers found that people who are impatient face a greater risk of biological decline than those who are a little more easy-going.
Telomeres (端粒) are sequences of DNA found at the ends of chromosomes (染色体) that act as a kind of protective cap for the genetic information they contain. Each time a cell divides, these telomeres become slightly eroded (削弱), eventually becoming so short that the cell itself is no longer able to continue dividing. As such, telomere length provides a measure of cellular aging and is a reliable predictor of a person’s risk of disease and early mortality. Knowing that the erosion of telomeres can be increased by a number of factors that can be brought on by stress, such as inflammation (炎症), the study authors sought to determine if impatience could contribute to this acceleration. To measure this, the study authors designed a range of behavioral economic tasks, such as asking participants to choose between receiving $100 immediately or a larger sum in 30 days. By raising and lowering this amount, the researchers were able to determine each participant‘s minimum acceptable amount (MAA), meaning the lowest sum of money they would be willing to wait 30 days to receive.
Analyzing their data, the study authors found that those with a higher MAA tended to have shorter telomeres, indicating a negative correlation between delay discounting and cellular aging. Interestingly, this effect was far more pronounced in women than in men, leading the researchers to conclude that, on a cellular level, females may be more likely to age fast as a result of psychological stress and impatience than males.
Though the researchers admit that they cannot say at this stage whether shorter telomere length causes impatience or impatience accelerates telomere erosion, they predict that the latter is more likely. This is because they found no evidence that shortened telomere length affected participants’ ability to make rational decisions regarding longer-term financial investments.
38.Why does the author mention telomeres in Paragraph 2?
A.To give an example of aging.
B.To draw attention to potential human disease.
C.To analyze the cause of a scientific phenomenon.
D.To introduce the background knowledge of an experiment.
39.What does it mean if a participant’s MAA is high?
A.He is less likely to age. B.He is willing to wait longer.
C.He can be described as impatient. D.He will get less money than others.
40.How did scientists draw the conclusion?
    A.By predicting the possible reasons.
B.By asking participants' minimum acceptable amount.
C.By comparing the patience level between males and females.
D.By analyzing the relation between MAA and the length of telomeres.
41.Which section of a magazine is this passage most probably taken from?
    A.Finance. B.Science. C.Education. D.Culture.

Some are attracted to museums by the art and the culture — but if that isn’t enough, there is always the novelty!
    Cupnoodles Museum
The Cupnoodles Museum in Yokohama, Japan, offers a treat: exhibits can be not only admired, but eaten. Visitors can work in the museum’s noodle workshop, refining creations with their favourite ingredients. While doing so, one can also learn the history of the noodle, one of Japan’s most popular foods.
    Tenement Museum
At New York’s Tenement Museum, visitors can gain an insight into what life was like for immigrants and the working class in the city from the 1860s through to the 1980s. The museum opened in 1992 and offers guided tours of two tenement buildings with recreated rooms, where costumed “residents” enact the daily lives of the city’s newcomers and workers over the period —leaps and bounds from the money makers of Wall Street.
    Cancún Underwater Museum
As the name suggests, it is underwater. More than 500 sculptures anchored in the ocean off Mexico are meant to illustrate the interaction effect of art and nature. Visitors can either admire the works through a glass-bottom boat or take a scuba diving tour.
    Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre
With great attention to detail, New Zealand built the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, which exhibits original aircraft from the First and Second World Wars. A recent study in Japan has showed that a wearable soft robot, named Reliebo, can improve the experience of patients in medical treatments, such as injections (注射) and other unpleasant treatments. The goal of the robot is to help ease pain and defend people against anxiety. The study, led by researchers at the University of Tsukuba, was inspired in part by the numerous needles (针) people had to put up with while being vaccinated against COVID-19. Some people felt an intense dislike for these needles, which led to fewer people getting vaccinated.
The robot is soft and covered in fur. It contains small airbags internally that inflate (膨胀) in response to hand movement. Participants in the study who wore the robot while subjected to a medium heat stimulation, experienced less pain in the test than those who did not wear the robot.
The research team checked the effectiveness of the wearable robot while being handled by participants under certain conditions, based on the clenching (紧握) of the hand. The team placed painful heat stimulation on the other arm that was not holding the robot. They then measured cortisol (皮质醇) levels from the participants’ saliva (唾液) samples, suggesting levels of stress hormones. The pain felt by the patients was given specific ratings and was also recorded using an assessment table. The people in the study were given a survey test to assess their fear of injections before and after the experiment with the wearable robot was completed.
The study proved that a wearable-informed robot may serve as a promising tool to ease the experience of patients who were receiving injections. The research team hopes to use this study to advance the robot for use during painful situations, such as getting medical shots or similar conditions.

In the 2010s, 34-year old Brianne Miller travelled around the world as a marine (海洋的) biologist. No matter how remote the location, she made the same alarming discovery: large amounts of plastic polluting the water and threatening marine life. Miller knew she needed to do something.
Canadians throw out three million tons of plastic waste each year, 33 per cent of which comes from food packaging. Miller, determined to solve the problem at the source, envisioned a shop that not just banned the use of plastic bags—a place that avoided both wasteful packaging and the bad habit of wasting food itself.
To put her thought into practice, in June 2018, Miller opened one of the first zero-waste grocery stores in Canada. She named it Nada. You can bring your own containers (容器), though it’s not necessary: right by the front door are recycled glass or plastic containers, free for the taking.
The early days of the pandemic (疫情) were hard on the business. Because food sales were restricted (限制), Nada closed its doors to the public for 18 months. But then Miller turned to online ordering and delivery. The zero-waste deliveries are made by e-bike and electric vehicles. Everything from olive oil to fresh eggs comes delivered in recycled containers, which are collected and reused for the next round of deliveries.
Those containers do so much more than just reduce waste. They get people thinking big, just as Miller had hoped they would. “You can see how many times the container has been used,” she says.
61.What made Miller take action to deal with plastic waste?
A.The terrible situation of the ocean life.
B.The strong desire to travel all over the world.
C.The great responsibility of researching plastic.
D.The respect and admiration from other biologists.
62.What does the underlined word “envisioned” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A.Doubt. B.Demand. C.Advise. D.Imagine.
63.What can we know about Miller’s zero-waste grocery store?
A.It asked consumers to pay for plastic containers.
B.It went out of business because of the pandemic.
C.It provided environmental friendly delivery service.
D.It suggested people to buy less food to reduce waste.
64.Which of the following words can best describe Miller?
A.Kind and ambitious. B.Creative and determined.
C.Brave and humorous D.Optimistic and confident.

Even if you are not a football fan you are sure to be impressed by the Lusail Stadium, the main stadium for Qatar (卡塔尔) World Cup 2022. The stadium catches peoples’ attention with its bold design and creative technique, which was inspired by the hand-crafted bowls found all across the Arab world, and the Fanar lanterns found in the region.
The symbolic stadium was constructed by the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC). “The stadium is the most international World Cup stadium with the largest and most complex systems, the highest design standards (标准) and the most advanced technology,” said Li Bai, the Chinese engineer from CRCC who was in charge of the project.
The key to the Lusail Stadium’s design is its steel (钢) structure and roof which has the same amount of steel as three Eiffel Towers. Made of the best Polvtetrafluoroethvene (聚四氟Z烯) material, the stadium’s roof protects the stadium from hot winds, keeps out dust and allows in enough light for the grass on the football field to grow, while providing shade to reduce the pressure on the stadium’s cooling systems.
The main structure mainly consists of V-shape trusses (桁架). This design solution reduced the amount of steel needed by 12000 tons. Designed using the team’s innovatively developed BIM — an architecture information modeling database — the Lusail Stadium uses 40 percent less water than traditional buildings thanks to measures such as systems that use collected rainwater and an improved water-saving sprinkler irrigation (喷灌) system, according to the construction team from CRCC.
Making full use of China’s advantages in the infrastructure (基础设施) industry, Chinese companies have provided a full set of production chain solutions for the design and construction of the stadium. The stadium reflects China’s rich experience in designing creative, sustainable and reliable landmark buildings such as the “Bird’s Nest” and the “Ice Ribbon”.

D.To show the development of Chinese construction technology.

Zheng Haiqiang and Ni Decong rose early on Jan. 24, before the break of dawn, to monitor Hainan gibbons (长臂猿). After a one-hour hike, they heard the animals howling, located their positions, and excitedly found one holding a baby cub.
There are 20 gibbon species recognized worldwide, of which six are known to come from China. The Hainan gibbon is the most endangered of them all and one of the world’s rarest primates. They can mainly be found in Bawangling National Nature Reserve in Changjiang county, western Hainan, which is part of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.
Forty years ago, Bawangling formed a monitoring team, which consists of forest rangers and experienced villagers. The members of the monitoring team, like Zheng and Ni, will get up at 4 am every day. Science and technology help to scope out and predict locations where they may be able to observe the gibbons, and then they’ll wait for them to start howling at around 6 am, before taking photos and recording the lives of the gibbons.
The Hainan gibbons are a critically endangered and important flagship species. They serve as an indicator of the health and stability of the tropical island’s entire ecosystem, according to Qi Xunming, director of the Education and Publicity Division of Bawangling Branch of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Administration. “If the number of Hainan gibbons increases, it indicates that the local environment is healthy, complete and functioning well”, Qi says.
To educate people on the island’s exclusive residents, exhibitions have been held in schools and communities across the province. From Oct. 24 to 31, a science exhibition, Into the Mysterious “Gibbon Universe” of the Bawangling National Nature Reserve-the Familiar and Unfamiliar Facts of Hainan Gibbons was held at Hainan Library. With interesting, vivid and informative pictures and illustrations, the exhibition presented the living habits and population changes of Hainan gibbons, as well as the effects of conservation on the animal and its habitat.
“Hopefully, with more education and publicity, the national park administration will recruit more talents, and young people with a relatively high educational background will join the monitoring team”, Qi adds.
