Every year on my birthday, ever since I turned twelve, a white gardenia (栀子花) would be sent to my house. I had tried to find out the sender’s name, but no card ever came with the flower. The phone calls to the flower shop didn’t help, either. After a while, I gave up and was just pleased with the yearly beautiful white flower wrapped (包裹) in soft pink paper.
However, I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about this sender. My mother encouraged these daydreams. She would ask me if I had been especially kind to someone. Maybe it was one of my classmates. Maybe it was the old man who lived across the street. I had sent letters for him during the winter. But, as a girl, I had more fun imagining from the sender to be some boy I had met.
A month before I was set to graduate (毕业) from high school, my father passed away. I was so sad that I became completely uninterested in my upcoming (即将来临的) graduation dance. Would I have a new dress to wear to it? I didn’t care at all. My mother was caught up in her own sadness. However, she wouldn’t let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved. In fact, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like how I came to view the gardenia: lovely and strong, with perhaps a bit of mystery (神秘感).

Have you ever wished that the driverless cars we see in movies and TV shows were real? If so, you’ll be happy to learn that driverless cars are on their way.
The first driverless car to hit the screen was Herbie, a cute talking car from the 1968 comedy The Love Bug. Herbie could drive by himself and even talk to his human friends.
KITT was another driverless car that appeared on the 1980s’ TV show knight Rider. KITT used advanced technology (先进技术) to drive itself and help its rider Michael Knight catch criminals (罪犯).
While the driverless cars of today can’t talk to us, they are much like the ones we’ve seen on screen Nearly every major car company is working on their own driverless cars. Tesla, for example, has made a driver-assistance system (驾驶员辅助系统) for its cars called Tesla Autopilot.
Tesla Autopilot can do many of the tasks (任务) that human drivers do. It can make sure that your car is driving in the correct lane (车道), as well as park itself and stop if it sees that an accident might happen. However, it is not fully self-driving. A human still needs to drive it.
Google’s sister company Waymo seems to be leading the way in this area. Its self-driving cars are already being used for taxi services in the US city of Phoenix. A Heavy Tire(轮胎) Necklace
It’s common for kind strangers to go out of their way to save missing dogs or cats. The 35-year-old bird catcher managed to help a saltwater crocodile to once again be able to enjoy its freedom.
The crocodile caught people’s eye in 2016. It was seen swimming around with a motorbike tire around its neck. People had no idea how the tire had originally(最初) gotten stuck on the animal. However, they decided to find a way to take away its rubbery(橡胶的) “necklace” from around its neck. Otherwise the crocodile would likely end up choking to death once it grew to its full size. Sadly, many people tried and failed.
In early January, Tili moved to the city of Palu. He heard about the famous crocodile from his neighbors. He decided to try his luck. Tili set up a trap, using live chickens as bait(诱饵). After three weeks of waiting, the crocodile finally fell into the trap on the night of February 9.
Government data recorded 279 crocodile attacks in Indonesia. As many as 268 cases had been carried out by saltwater crocodiles. About half of them were deadly(致命的). “I didn’t learn how to do this from anywhere,” Tili said. “I just couldn’t stand seeing an animal suffer.”
